PROJECT GUIDELINES We will use the Library Computers T/Th to do
the project The magazine will be viewed on wikispace
when completed. You can also put pages on our wiki so you can easily access the work from home to do “homework”
Magazine pages will also be printed in color Mrs. Roberts will attempt to send in the
magazine to a place where it can be properly printed and bound to become a real magazine.
AND A CARROT TO DANGLE….
SHOULD THIS PROJECT BE EXCELLENT….
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! We will make a tv show (once again)
featuring all of you as scientists/writers being interviewed (perhaps game show style???) on your topic from the magazine.
Now won’t that be fun?
OOOPS! DON’T LET ME FORGET THAT OTHER THING….
SO WHAT ABOUT ASSESSMENT? We need to work together to see what you are
demonstrating by doing this assignment.
1. What school skills are you practising? Computer skills, Working cooperatively together, Writing
skills, non fiction reading skills, research skills, visual skills, creativity
2. What school subject areas are involved? Science, Language Arts, Art/Drama, Computers 3. Why is Mrs. Roberts’ even giving this assignment? That is,
what is she trying to get us to learn? Earth’s Crust Unit in Science 4. Are work habits essential to completing the project? If so,
which work habits should be assessed? Yes, All of the work habits on the report cards espeically
doing your work on time.
PEER ASSESSMENT We need some examples of how peers can help assess along the
way: So? We need to decide how to document peer assessment.
-teacher observation? Yes, class prefers this one.-students recording on a paper? No-reporting a the end of the project? No
We need to determine whether we are marking a) that a student seeks feedback from peers Or b) that a student offers effective feedback that helps the other
person move forward in their learning Or c) that a student regards such feedback seriously and attempts to
make improvements Yes, students see this as most relevant.
SELF ASSESSMENT Would self assessment need to be
documented throughout the project or only at the end? The end
I will likely edit the Ancient China project evaluation and use that again for a summary of how you did on the project. It has self, peer and teacher comments plus a criteria checklist.
OK
LET’S MAKE THE CRITERIA CHECKLIST TOGETHER. Each student is responsible for creating a
part of the magazine. Their article should include the following:
correct grammar Correct spelling Images Interesting Creative On time Science content emphasized
