Recently, two of our long-serving Westcreek Neighborhood Association Executive Committee Members decided to retire. It’s time to honor these wonderful volunteers.

I asked them both several questions about the length of their terms, the circumstances, accomplishments and any message they’d like to convey to the residents of Westcreek. Their answers are below.

Bob Shrader began his 15 years plus of service on the Westcreek Neighborhood Association Executive Committee only a year after he and his wife, Sue, moved to the neighborhood. His first position was Vice President. Over the years, he has served as President three times, Immediate Past President three times, once as OHAN representative, and once as the ANC Representative, each with a term of two years.

Ben Coughran started out his nine years plus of service on the WNA Executive Committee as the Treasurer, when Bob Shrader was in the position of President. Ben says, “The WNA at that time was really in bad shape, as the previous President had moved to Dallas and did not tell anyone he was leaving until the last minute. Bob Shrader breathed life back into the Association and we were lucky to have a young and energetic Karen Gregory come along to be our Secretary about the same time. Over time, I replaced Bob as President, served my time as immediate Past President, and then three years as Member-at-Large.”

What do you consider your biggest accomplishment while on the WNA Executive Committee?BOB: The biggest accomplishment for our Association and all of Southwest Austin was getting the attention we deserve from the “powers

that be”: the City of Austin. We’ve become an area to be reckoned with: we’ve made lots of noise and gotten noticed on a number of issues. One big one comes to mind — the threaded entrance to 290/MoPac going downtown. Originally TXDOT did not have any ramp planned. We were shocked, as the closest neighborhood it would impact us the most. Our membership banded together with local businesses, had demonstrations, got lots of press, and lo and behold, TXDOT magically came up with the “threaded” entrance ramp. I’m very proud of our residents for coming together when it was truly needed. BEN: I consider my most rewarding accomplishment to be the successful implementation of the City Of Austin, Vehicle Lawn Parking Ban Ordinance in residential neighborhoods. Councilperson Betty Dunkerly was key in this effort. Also, I think that the WNA was successful in increasing City Code Enforcement in our neighborhood during my and Bob’s time on the Committee. I lead the initiative to have the Westcreek entry sign erected on Brush Country Drive. The Yard of the Month program was initiated during the mid 90s under the leadership of Bob Shrader, and the Westcreek “Please Drive Carefully” signs were erected. Any message you would like to get out to the WNA membership? BOB: I think this is the best neighborhood in Austin, for a lot of reasons: the schools, the central location, the shopping and services close by, and because of our active residents and Association itself. I would encourage residents who haven’t been active to become so…stick out your neck once in a while, and get involved. Join the WNA because the future of this neighborhood depends on new ideas and new involvement. Yes, it takes time, but it is worth it. BEN: I love living in Westcreek. The beautiful old live oaks and wonderful neighbors make me so happy to come home to my lovely Carol from work every day. Aren’t we lucky to live in such a beautiful part of this great USA? The WNA is essential in keeping our neighborhood the wonderful place it is. Amen, Ben and Bob! From all of us in Westcreek, THANKS to both of you for putting in such long hours with caring hearts. We owe you our nice high home values, and our gratitude for a job well done!

Meet Your City Council Candidates A City Council Candidate Forum will be held on Wednesday, March 5th at 7 p.m. at Covington Middle School, sponsored by OHAN. All of the candidates for the three available City Council seats have been invited. A Panel Forum will be held from 7 p.m. -8 p.m., followed by a Meet and Greet from 8 p.m. - 9 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet the candidates personally and hear their views on issues that affect us here in Southwest Austin before we go vote!

Welcome Committee Forming in Westcreek Do you love our neighborhood and your neighbors? Want to help welcome our newest neighbors? The Westcreek Neighborhood Association is forming a Welcome Committee to help greet neighbors as they move in. There are several things that still need to happen to get the committee

up and running, including approaching local merchants for coupons or freebies. Over time, this committee will require very little time commitment, and it will be a great way to enhance the community feel of our neighborhood. Also, we welcome Westcreek neighbors who have a business or product to include in this effort to email Gary Bunevick ([email protected]) or Judy Jefferson ([email protected]). We look forward to your participation!

Barkitecture — a doggone neat ideaare examples of passive cooling techniques. So, not only would the dog be comfortable, but the dog could be cooled naturally as well. Similarly, the roof was designed and built such that rainwater could be collected without gutters. As the creator said of the doghouse, “It is a small example of a much larger principle”. In an interesting twist, the winning bidder of this doghouse has a veterinary practice off Deep Eddy, so the wood won’t be too far from its original home. Do you have something interesting to share about one of your neighbors? Please email Karen Gregory ([email protected]).

Many Westcreek neighbors have remodeled their homes, but for several weeks last Fall, most people driving or walking around the turn in Morning Dew Drive stopped to wonder what was being built in the driveway. It started off a square base, and over time ended up withametalbutterflyroof.And,onthenightbeforethecompetition,itwasfinallyfinishedat11p.m.Butwhatwasit? We all know that Austin is certainly a dog-friendly city. We collectively take our dogs everywhere. The now annual event, Barkitecture, hosted in the 2nd Street District showcased 30 of Austin’s best architects, designers and builders. Each entrant designed and created doghouses to be auctioned off to benefit avariety of animal rescue and advocacy groups; this year’s proceeds went directly to Animal Trustees of Austin, Lucky Mutts, Austin Dog Rescue and Blue Dog rescue. One of our architect neighbors participated in Barkitecture with a green (environmentally friendly) doghouse, which was constructed with green materials and methods, i.e., the materials were all either reclaimed or recycled or recyclable. The framing was made from lumber from a tear down of a house on Deep Eddy, the siding was from pallets left by a dumpster, the paint was low VOC, and the rubberflooringinsidewasmadefromrecycledtires. The structure itselfwas created to be functional and efficient. For example, the roof was designed with ventilation overhangs and the structure itself has multiple openings for breezes, which
