summary of chanGes to the Green marine environmental proGram for 2013In 2012, all Green Marine committees and working groups were actively involved in revising the environmental program to increase its value and relevance to all participants. As of 2013, the program will include updates and additions for shipowners, ports, terminals and shipyards. Details will be posted on the Green Marine website in January 2013.

chanGes for shipoWners • New SOX emissions criteria reflecting new North American ECA regulatory requirements. Changes will affect

especially domestic shipowners.

• New oily water indicator for tugboats and ferries, based on the current indicator but adapted to tugboats’ and ferries’ technical and operational features.

chanGes for ports, terminals and shipyards

• Additions to the prevention of spills and leakages indicator. Although this indicator was optional in 2011, many participants tested the new criteria and reported back to Green Marine.

• Minor changes to the dry bulk handling and storage indicator.

• Complete revision of the conflicts of use (community issues) indicator. In recent years, participants identified various shortcomings. Edits have occurred at all levels. The result is now a strong, complete, inclusive indi-cator.

• New environmental leadership indicator for terminals and shipyards. Previously, this indicator applied only to port authorities and the St. Lawrence Seaway. However several private companies called for developing a similar indicator for terminals and shipyards to allow them to put forward examples of environmental ini-tiatives that are not covered elsewhere in the program. The new indicator will be optional for 2012. Minor changes have also been made to the port authorities indicator.

an electric car for the port of sept-ÎlesThe Sept-Îles Port Authority has just acquired an electric car and installed two charging stations: one at its admi-nistrative offices (Mgr Blanche terminal) and the other in Pointe-Noire near the main gate of the La Relance termi-nal. environmental excellence aWards for three pioneer Green marine participants! The International Bulk Journal (IBJ) recognized the environmental efforts made in 2012 by two shipowners, CSL and Fednav, while the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) rewarded the environmental enhancement work done by the Port of Cleveland.

Canada Steamship Lines’ (CSL) first of the four new Trillium Class self-unloading Lakers, the Baie St. Paul, was awarded the 2012 Bulk Ship of the Year Award for the year’s most outstanding individual bulk ship or newly-built vessel. The award recognizes the operational efficiency, design innovation, and superior safety and environmental features that set the Baie St. Paul apart from other ves-sels. The Baie St. Paul completed her maiden voyage from China, docking at the Port of Montreal on December 1.

Fednav Group won the IBJ award in the category of Bulk Ship Operator of the Year. The award highlights Fednav’s contribution to maritime trade, as well as its leadership in the implementation of higher industry operating standards including efficiency, environmental pro-tection and safety. Fednav took delivery of 11 new vessels this year and currently has 11 ice-class ships on order to be delivered between 2013 and 2016, including six Lakers designed to consume less fuel, reduce carbon emissions by 20% and maximize cargo intake.

The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority won an interna-tional industry award for opening and managing the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve. The AAPA awarded the Port its 2012 Environmental Enhancement Award for the Preserve, a unique man-made 88-acre site on Lake Erie, opened in February. Since then, the Preserve has had nearly 14,000 visits by people from 39 states and 13 countries. The wildlife refuge was originally created as the Dike 14 repository for sediment dredged to keep the Cuyahoga River clear for maritime traffic.
