When it comes to intergenerational Jewish activities, nothing compares to Passover. One of the repeated themes throughout the instructions for Passover in the Talmud is to teach each person according to their ability. This is clear in the story of the four children, each of whom gets their own answer to their unique question about the Seder. The wise child gets great detail, while the simple child gets the basics. The rebellious child gets a harsh answer (not a pedagogy I subscribe to today, but that's another story for another time), and the un-asking one is brought close in hopes that questions will arise. There are also customs based on the age of the participant. While the adults are enjoying four cups of wine, the Talmud encourages us to place nuts and roasted grains on the table so the children will be engaged and not fall asleep (B. Pesachim 109a). The story is told in a way that appeals to adults, and yet often we find illuminated Haggadot where the coloring looks inconsistent and even sloppy. This is because the illustrators drew outlines, so that when children at the Seder were given crayons, they could color in the lines, so that they could be active while the grown-ups discussed the story. And of course, Passover is all about memory. We remember the Exodus from Egypt as told in our Torah, and we remember the things that are holding us captive today. We look to our elders as a source of sacred memory who can help us continue the customs and rituals that we hold dear. At the same time, we look to the youth who can help us reimagine the rituals to make them relevant for today. In addition to enacting our sacred memory on Passover, we are also supposed to have a good time. As it says, "A person is obligated to gladden the children and the members of a household on a Festival" (ibid). This is not restricted to the children with their trail mix and coloring. We should all be engaged and having fun during a Passover Seder. And what better way to be engaged than to be here at CBT on Passover? Once again we are hosting a Second Night Passover Seder on Tuesday, April 11, beginning at 6:00 PM. Jenna and I will lead the service itself, and Larry Serota will be our head chef. It will be a night of memory, and a night to remember, as we go through the Passover Haggadah and engage CBTers of all ages and abilities. Our annual Second Night Seder is one of my favorite evenings of the year, and it will surely help demonstrate why Passover is one of our 40 Favorite Things About Judaism.

What do April and water have in common this year? Sure, there are April showers that bring May flowers. That happens every year in some climates. The key here is the “this year” part of the question. The answer must also have a Jewish perspective. One that ties together April, water, and 2017. Need some help? First, this month we celebrate Passover. The Passover story has many aqueous references. Moses floated on the Nile. We are reminded of the tears of the Israelites as they labored for the Egyptians. Water turned to

blood during the first plague. The exodus from Egypt took the Israelites into the wilderness by way of a parted sea. For a story that took place in the desert, it sure involved a lot of water! Speaking of water, we will have plenty of it at the Second Seder at CBT. Remember to send in your reservation and join us! A week after Passover ends, our thoughts turn to another sad time in our history as we observe Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. So many tears were shed as families were torn apart and destroyed. You should have received a yellow Yom HaShoah candle from the CBT Brotherhood last month. Be sure to light it on Sunday evening, April 23, and say a prayer of remembrance for the child whose name is on the sticker on the outside of the candle. Support this important annual Brotherhood project by sending in a donation and helping to keep alive the memory of the six million who perished. So many Holocaust survivors and refugees now live in Israel. On April 9, come attend the informational meeting about the 2018 trip to Israel. Rabbi Young and ARZA have put together a fantastic itinerary and secured Muki, the same tour guide from the 2015 Israel trip. He is a vast encyclopedia of knowledge about Israel’s history, her people, and current events. At the meeting, you will hear about scheduled experiences that include locations along the Mediterranean Sea and even some time at and, if you choose, floating in the Dead Sea. Finally, our annual fundraiser will be held on Saturday, April 29. The theme is Musical Voyage on the High Cs. This isn’t an actual cruise, but if last year was any indication, there will be waves of laughter and maybe tears of joy as the dueling pianos battle it out in contests such as UCLA vs. USC and Stop the Music. The level of excitement will be kept afloat as the winners of the silent auction prizes, the gift card tree, the wine cooler and its bottles of wine, and the big raffle are announced. The evening promises to be a boat load of fun. From Passover to memories of the Shoah, and from Israel to our musical voyage. Water is there in some form or another and plays a more significant role than simply bringing May flowers. (Okay, for you sticklers out there, yes, water did bring a certain Mayflower. But as Rabbi Young says, that’s another story for another time.) L’shalom, Sam

By now you know that Al Davidson was named this year’s Brotherhood Man of the Year. He was chosen for his work for both the Brotherhood and the congregation. He's currently serving as Religious Practices Chair.

Al was honored locally at the Brotherhood service, (which he and Rabbi Young organized), and by regional Brotherhood at a Northridge synagogue. Thank you to those who made the trip to honor Al.

Brotherhood recently gathered to package and mail some 300 Yom HaShoah candles to congregants. We are to light the candles on the evening of April 23, Jewish Holocaust Remembrance Day. Thank you to the stuffers: Harris Stutman, Mike Kibel, Arnold Adler, Dwight Borses, Bill Cable, Lari Davis, Stan Fink, Mort Fried, Bill Geltman, Greg Halprin, Martin Heimlich, Ian Leveton, Steve Maybaum, Maury Shulman, and David Zutz.

Brotherhood members gave their burger-flipping wrists a rest for the Religious School Purim Carnival, but were back at the barbecue grills for Mitzvah Day, chaired by Amy Kaskel, and have offered to do the same at the Congregational Picnic on June 4.

A minor change to the Brotherhood Constitution was discussed at the March meeting. The formal vote will take place in April.

Passover Melodies, Passover Memories

This month marks the holiday of Passover, in which we tell the story of our exodus from Egypt with the reading of the Haggadah and, of course, a festive meal. From the order of the Seder to the conclusion of the evening, there are so many opportunities to celebrate in song. It’s truly one of my favorite holidays of the year!

Passover songs enhance the telling of our story, while guiding us in a clear structure from one part of the Seder to the next. Songs draw upon our memories from years past, times spent with family and friends in our own homes, family’s homes, as guests, and as a community. From “The Frog Song” to “Dayenu,” no matter your age, there’s a Passover melody for you. My favorite Passover traditions include a rousing “Rock and Roll” Passover Seder with my family’s chavurah, complete with a chavurah band and songs like “Pesach, Matzah and Maror” sung to the tune of “Hotel California!” I look forward to joining you in song at our CBT community Seder on April 11!

Mitzvah Day 2017

Mitzvah Day 2017 was a huge success! Over 140 volunteers gathered at CBT to repair 30 Torah commentaries, package 216 hygiene kits, decorate 147 Chinese takeout boxes, assemble 133 brown bag lunches, paint one gorgeous mural in our outdoor space, donate 23 pints of blood, make 19 fleece blankets, design 180 flower pens for 48 beautiful vases, embellish and fill 65 doggy bags, author 59 MaxLove Project notes, bake 50 brownies, and fix numerous things in our synagogue. Our projects supported Beach Cities Interfaith Service, Heritage Pointe, Illumination Foundation, the Red Cross, the Fountain Valley Police and Fire Departments, and other organizations.

Thank you to the Mitzvah Day committee, those who planned and executed the projects, the generous donors who helped support Mitzvah Day financially, the Sisterhood for serving lunch, and the Brotherhood for doing the barbequing. Save your denim (in all colors) and large safety pins for a project supporting Sole Hope coming soon! There is a box in the lobby for the donations. JOIN TEAM CHAI ’S F IGHT AGAINST CANCER

Congregation B’nai Tzedek’s Team Chai invites participation in and support for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, a 22-hour event designed to raise money and awareness to fight cancer. This year’s Relay will be held at Davis Magnet High School, 1050 Arlington Drive in Costa Mesa. The 2017 Relay is scheduled to start at 11:00 AM on April 29, 2017, and will conclude at 9:00 AM on April 30, 2017. Choose to camp out on the track overnight with your family – or just sign up to walk laps for an hour or two.
