If I could save me in a bole.
The first thing that I'd like to do.
Is to save every day ' l eternity
passes away.
Just to spend them with you. Singer/songwriter, Jim Croce
Join us on August 29 from 11 a.m.-
4 p.m. for The Cleaning Up Cancer
Carnival. The carnival is a fundraiser
for Time in a Bole, a non-profit
organiza.on that cleans homes for
families who have children with
cancer or other serious illnesses.
Families receive housekeeping
service for up to 5 visits at no cost.
Stephanie Nesseth, the owner of
Absolutely Clean since 2001, started
the not-for-profit program when her
oldest son (Chris) was baling
childhood cancer. This year’s goal is
to raise $15,000 in dona.ons.
Salem United Methodist Church will
again be the site of this year’s
carnival. Ac.vi.es will include rides,
a climbing wall, inflatables, games, a
cake auc.on, silent auc.on, and live
music. Salem members may
volunteer for this event by baking a
cake for the cake auc.on,
volunteering to work in a game or
food both, serving water to booth
workers, or gree.ng visitors on
behalf of Salem. Addi.onal help is
needed for .ckets, prizes,
wristbands, trash service, and parking
assistance.
Individuals may also help by
purchasing a flock of flamingos to
place in the yard of a child when
they come home from chemo. Shown
below is Nora, the 2014 Time in a
Bole Poster child. The cost of a
flamingo is $10 for a flock of five baby
flamingos, $20 for a flock of 10 mixed
size flamingos, $25 for a flock of 15
mixed size flamingos, or $50 for a
flock of 20 large flamingos. The
purchase of an.-flocking insurance is
$10.
Please fill out a volunteer form and place it in the Outreach box in the
Fellowship Hall if you would like to par.cipate.
Members of the Outreach Team will be available between services during
the month of August to answer any ques.ons you might have regarding
this event. Stop by the Cleaning Up Cancer Carnival display Fellowship
Hall from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. each Sunday to see how you might be able to
help.

So God
blessed
the seventh
day and
hallowed it,
because
on it
God rested
from all
the work
that
he had
done in
crea.on.
Genesis 2:3
Rev. John Louk Pastor of the Salem UMC
Catching Up
Terry Hershey tells this story: “There
was once an American traveler who
planned a safari to Africa. He was that
typical Type-A American tourist, who
many of us may be and who I
admiedly am when I travel. We do
our research about this travel
des.na.on and we have a .metable,
maps, and a clear agenda of the things
we need to see and do. Some local
people had even been hired to carry
some of the traveler’s supplies as they
trekked throughout the land—it was
that level of planning.
“On the first morning, they all woke
up early and traveled fast and covered
a great distance. The second morning
was the same—woke up early,
traveled fast, and traveled far. Third
morning, same thing. But on the
fourth morning, the local hired help
refused to move. Instead, they sat by
a tree in the shade well into the
morning. The American traveler
became incensed and irate and said to
his translator, ‘This is a waste of
valuable .me. Can someone tell me
what’s going on here?’ The translator
looked at him and calmly answered,
‘They’re wai.ng for their souls to
catch up with their bodies.’ (Sacred
Necessi es: Gi's for Living with
Passion, Purpose, and Grace, 68-69)
Various versions of the same story are
told, but they all include people who
realize they need .mes of rest from all
the rushing about so that their souls
can catch up with them. This, of
course, isn’t a new idea. God did the
work of crea.on in six days and then
rested on the seventh from all the
work that had been done, blessing
that sabbath day and making it a holy
day of rest (Genesis 2:2, 3 and Exodus
20:11).
The month of June was such a .me for
me. It was a .me to stop and let my
soul catch up with my body aIer this
last year of the building project. Our
project has gone very well. We have
fantas.c leaders and an excited, hard-
working congrega.on. S.ll, the
building project required constant
aen.on, so I was behind in other
areas and physically unhealthy.
In my .me of rest, I took care of
several projects on my house and cars.
I waded through 2,500 emails and
other work leI on my desk. I spent
.me with my parents and helped
them accomplish a few tasks. I drove
the kids places they needed to be. I
slept in. Read. Watched movies.
Relaxed. De-stressed.
I hope that you too will take the .me
to rest regularly and catch up. God set
an example for us in this. We need to
periodically cease the busyness of
work so we can be healthy and whole.
AIer res.ng, though, it’s .me to
engage in work again. With the
building project winding down, we can
turn our aen.on to new endeavors.
We will con.nue work on the
prescrip.ons from our Healthy Church
Ini.a.ve consulta.on. The next
priority is puLng into place a Ministry
Empowerment Team to help the
people of Salem discover giIs and
passions and engage in ministry and
mission, serving both within the
congrega.on and in the community.
This is enormously important for us.
We named this need, internally, back
in the fall of 2011. It was given to us as
a prescrip.on in the fall of 2013. I am
excited for us to now implement this
next step in our congrega.on.
Grace and peace to you,
John Louk
In August we con.nue in ordinary .me, concluding the series, A Heart for God, on the first
Sunday. On August 23 we will have a special celebra.on for those returning to school
(students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff). We’re invi.ng students to bring their
backpacks for a special blessing and to receive a giI. And on August 30 we will offer a
special .me for married couples to renew their vows to one another. We want to share
wedding photos during a wedding recep.on during the fellowship .me. Come and
worship!

United Methodist Women Sharon Busch, President
Sarah Circle will meet August 13 at
9:30 a.m. at the Mahew 25 Center,
201 3rd Ave. SW. Our hostess will be
Carolyn Jarvis.
Our plan is for those living near
Salem to meet at the church about 9
a.m. to ride together.
Eden Youngberg will share with the
group about the ministry of Mahew
25 and give a tour of the center.
This is a chance to learn more about
a mission that Salem supports. We
may also find some ways we can
volunteer such as the "Book Buddy"
program or the new "Change the Life
of a Child" project.
Rachel Circle will not have a regular
mee.ng in August, but will work
together at the UMW Garage Sale
set-up, sale and clean-up on August
5, 6 and 7. (See page 8 for more
garage sale details.)
The UMW Mission Study will meet
Friday, 21 from 9-3 at New
Horizons UMC in Coralville. Food
will be provided with a $7.00 per
meal fee. Anyone interested in
aending please contact Dorothy

Salem Mission Fair
August 23 10 a.m.—11 a.m.
What is your mission?
Come join us in the fellowship room
on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.,
August 23, for the Salem Mission
Fair! During this .me, you will have
the opportunity to visit with
representa.ves from some of the
various mission groups we support.
You will have the chance to learn of
opportuni.es where you can become
personally involved in what God is
doing in the area of Salem mission.
We hope your spirit will be
encouraged and your mission heart
will be enlarged as you discover how
many ministries we support!
Make plans to come early during the
fellowship .me at 10 a.m. The
Missions Fair only lasts an hour, so
plan on coming early to make the
most of it!
School Bags
We will con.nue to collect school
bags throughout the summer, so
keep buying those schools supplies.
The school supplies have started
going on sale. This is perfect .me to
fill up the school kits for UMCOR. The
average cost for all supplies is $11
but it can cost less if you are a careful
shopper. UMCOR School Kits help to
care for the most vulnerable people
during .mes of crisis. Please pick up
a school bag in the mission's room
and fill it up with these supplies:
14” x 16” cloth bag, 24-count
crayons, eraser, ruler, pencil
sharpener, 3 pads of wide Paper,
blunt scissors, and 6 pencils.
Volunteer OpportuniHes
Helping Hands has contacted us again
to see if a Salem member would be
interested in serving on the steering
commiee. The mee.ngs are held
on the 3rd
Tuesday of every month,
noon-1 p.m. at the Ecumenical
Center. This commiee, which has
volunteers from other churches also,
helps raise money and plans
upcoming events. The next mee.ng
is Tuesday, August 18. If you are

Report of the Leadership Board
MeeHng 7-21-2015
Notes recorded by Nancy Rawson
Following the subcommiee mee.ngs at 5:15 p.m., the
full board met at 5:50 p.m. LB Chair Anna Dunnwald
opened with prayer and led the mee.ng.
Finance Report – Linda Curson reported on the income
and expenses for this year (January – June 15). We are
in good shape and con.nue to make up the deficit from
earlier in the year when expenses were higher than
income. The amount given toward the Building Fund is
encouraging and exceeds pledges. The Church plans to
sign our mortgage loan with NXT Bank in the next few
weeks at an interest rate lower than originally
an.cipated.
Building Commiee Update – Linda Curson reported
that work on the building project is wrapping up. The
parking lot lines have been painted and work on the
garage will begin shortly. We have received the
construc.on rebates (from such sources as Alliant
Energy and MidAmerican Energy) and the total was
higher than expected. This funding will be given to the
Kitchen Commiee for use on the remodeling of the
kitchen.
Custodial Change – As Kevin Naholi is s.ll detained due
to immigra.on issues, the Church will proceed with the
hiring process for a custodian. A job descrip.on will be
updated. A help fund account for Kevin will con.nue to
be “open” for those in the congrega.on who would like
to contribute to his needs. This informa.on regarding
Kevin’s help account and the need for a custodian will
be communicated to the congrega.on.
Hospitality – Brian Schooley met with the recruits for
the hospitality team and plans to meet with them again
in August. The placement of sign-up sheets for events
and informa.onal pamphlets of ministry opportuni.es,
etc. will be discussed by the hospitality team.
Church Directory – Melissa
Zachman has agreed to
oversee the administra.ve
details for the church
directory. Ginnie Clark and
Sandy Minger will also help.
Lifetouch, the firm that will
create the directory, is
scheduled to be at the
church to take photos in
October.
Birthday/Anniversary Cards – Due to ill health, Jo Talbo
is no longer able to send out the birthday and
anniversary cards on behalf of the church. Someone will
be recruited to con.nue this prac.ce.
Website – Clover Sites is rolling out new websites for
church communi.es and we would like to take this
opportunity to update our website. Pastor Louk will
work on this but needs help. He will ask a couple other
congrega.onal members to contribute.
Ministry Empowerment Team – The church would like to
proceed with the establishment of a ministry
empowerment team that will help church members
iden.fy their ministry giIs and areas where they can
u.lize those giIs. The right people will need to be
iden.fied to serve on this important commiee.
Blood Pressure Checks - Judy Cowan has been doing
blood pressure checks between services for quite some
.me. She asked if the church wishes her to con.nue to
do so. The Leadership Board would like her to con.nue
this service, if she is agreeable. The .mes and loca.on of
the checks will need to be communicated to the
congrega.on.
Church Use – The church has been approached with a
request to use the church building on August 30 for a 90th
birthday party from a member of St. Marks United
Methodist Church. St. Marks is not available that
aIernoon for this event and Salem is more accessible for
Page 11
Leadership Board Report ConHnued from page 10
handicapped individuals. The Leadership Board agreed
to this request and will find a “building host” for the
aIernoon.
Worship Services in August – Pastor Louk discussed his
ideas for worship services on August 23 and August 30.
A big “back to school bonanza” is planned for August
23. The lec.onary for August 30 is from the Song of
Solomon and he asked for ideas regarding a service that
would include the renewal of wedding vows.
Trustees – A thank you note was circulated for a
neighbor of Kathy Wickham who helped move large
items to the church. * TruGreen Lawn Care submied a
proposal for weed control and fer.lizer treatments on
the property. The Trustees agree that it would be good
to have treatments next spring. Addi.onal bids will be
solicited. * Separate entry codes for the alarm system
will be given to each person who has a church key. This
will allow for beer tracking. * The Trustees will
develop a rota.on schedule for the opening and closing
of the church on Sundays. Each Trustee will have his/
her own key and will have a small checklist of items to
do before closing. * Quarterly work days for the church
will be scheduled. During this .me, workers can also
help with the roadside trash pickup. * A door in the
hallway by the kitchen will be moved to the other end
(of the hallway) to accommodate the kitchen
remodeling project. * The Building Commiee will be
asked to consider an area to store cleaning supplies.
Stewardship –Dave Jandik has graciously volunteered
to conduct the 2014 audit. The financial campaign this
fall will coincide with the third year commitment of the
building campaign.
SPRC – The Leadership Board endorsed a
recommenda.on from the SPRC and the Youth Team
for Rick Lindo to serve as youth leader for the church.
A worship commiee will be formed to consider the
content and format of our worship services. The SPRC
considered a sugges.on that Pastor Louk not greet
people aIer services in order to stay at the front of the
sanctuary to pray or talk with those individuals in need.
If you are at least 16 years of age and have the
qualifica.ons to offer and provide for the emo.onal,
physical and social needs of young children during
the .me they are in our church nursery, please
contact Deb Black at [email protected]
Nursery Aendants Needed Deb Black
However, the SPRC
recommends that he con.nue
gree.ng worshippers and that
others, giIed with
intercession, could offer
prayers.
Closing – The mee.ng
adjourned at 7 p.m. to
conduct the Another Set of
Eyes Ministry appraisal of
Pastor John Louk.
