Lisa Lewis took a few minutes out of her morning Tuesday to chat with a colleague as he sat in his golf cart just outside her barn watching train-ing near the midpoint of the far turn at Saratoga Race Course.

“I’m not going to be able to give you too much,” Lewis said. “She’s in the next day main-track only, too. I’m not really sure [if Isabelle will run in the Coronation Cup]. I’ve really got to talk to Mr. Schettine. We’re leaving our options open.”

ful Appeal endured a nightmarish trip in that 6 1/2-furlong race, breaking inside, getting shuffled back and dealing with kickback.

Lewis does think she’ll handle the grass. Wheth-er that’s today in the 5 1/2-furlong Coronation Cup or later in the meet remains to be seen.

Isabelle is one of 10 entered – Sweetmarys Suc-cess is entered main-track only – and drew a favor-able outside post.

“I do think she would like the grass, that’s why we put her in there,” Lewis said. “But at the same time it’s also a long meet. I’ll talk to [Schettine]. We wanted to see how it all comes up, between the weather, the race, the post. It looks like there are some others doing the same things, trying the grass or thinking about running if it comes off.”

Three others entered in the body of the race would be making their grass debuts if they start – 4-1 second choice Elena Strikes, Burn Control and Fat Kat. Ruslana made her last start on Polytrack and Stars Above Me last raced in late June in En-gland, so there are certainly plenty of questions in the Coronation Cup.

Andrew Rosen’s Recoupe is the 7-2 favorite for the feature off a fast victory going 5 furlongs on the turf at Penn National for trainer Mike Trombetta.

The Indiana Charlie filly is unbeaten in three starts on the grass, victories that also coincided with an equipment change.

“Since we’ve added the blinkers and turf she’s been 3-for-3 on the grass,” Trombetta said a few moments after ducking under a webbing in his barn that houses his string of 12. “I guess it’s a little bit back on quick rest, but there’s not a lot of options for 3-year-old fillies short on the turf. In fact this is one of the only ones and we’re here. So we brought her up. She hasn’t been here long, only a couple days but she’s settled in and doing OK.”

Recoupe finished third in two dirt races at Laurel before switching to the grass and winning a 5-fur-

long maiden during the Pimlico spring meet. She added another win going the same distance about two months later at Delaware Park.

The only blemish on her record this season was a seventh-place finish in a 6-furlong allowance race on the Tapeta Footings synthetic surface at Presque Isle Downs. She bounced out of that race to win at Penn National 17 days later, going 5 furlongs gate-to-wire in :56.60.

“It’s a huge step up, sure, but if we can hit the board in a race like this it’s well worth the effort,” Trombetta said. “I don’t know if she has to be on the front, but she’s pretty quick. She just kind of puts herself right there. It seems to be the way she likes to run.”

Stars Above Me, an English-bred daughter of Ex-ceed and Excel, makes her U.S. debut for Graham Motion. She arrived at his Saratoga barn about two weeks ago with the intention of getting some black type.

Owned by Elite Racing Club UK and previously trained by Roger Charlton, Stars Above Me is 1-for-5 lifetime and was third last time going 5 furlongs in a small handicap June 21 at Newmarket. Irad Ortiz Jr. gets the call on the 5-1 co-third choice.

Others entered are Hot Squeeze, a winner here last Wednesday going 5 ½ furlongs on the turf for George Weaver, and Scatcapade, fourth in a 7-fur-long allowance/optional June 18 at Belmont for Christophe Clement.

Tweaks to the South Florida summer stakes cal-endar due to ongoing squabbles between racetrack operators provided a unique opportunity for Rich-ard Averill and his homebred filly R Free Roll.

Averill hoped to run the 4-year-old daughter of Rockport Harbor at Calder Race Course’s Summit of Speed program, but that event was scrapped for 2014 due to an agreement between Calder and Gulfstream Park to avoid running head-to-head racing programs. The Grade 2 Princess Rooney go-ing 6 furlongs was an ideal spot, but when efforts to even run a truncated version of the Summit of Speed at Gulfstream fell short Averill sent R Free Roll to Saratoga.

R Free Roll, who races for Averill Racing and Silver Oak Stable, made her co-owner and breeder look pretty smart when she led the field gate-to-wire in a mild upset of the $200,000 HRTV Hon-orable Miss Handicap Monday.

“We were going to shoot for the Summit of Speed,” Averill said. “I called [Gulfstream Presi-dent] Tim Ritvo and he said it didn’t look like they were going to do anything and Calder said even if they did work out a deal they weren’t going to run [the Summit of Speed], so we shipped her up here.

“Honestly she’s done enough down there to prove she should be here. Running in another over-night stakes or small stakes doesn’t do anything for

her, breeding wise. This probably put a half-million on her resume, when she’s done and retired. And she deserved a shot in a race like this.”

R Free Roll didn’t give the Honorable Miss field much of a shot in the Saratoga slop.

She didn’t break on top – maybe a half step slow-er than 7-5 favorite La Verdad – but was quickly in front of that rival and Grade 3 Vagrancy Handicap winner Merry Meadow in the first 50 yards. Paco Lopez opened up a bit on La Verdad and Jose Ortiz, who took back off the speed and raced in tandem with Merry Meadow into the far turn.

“She didn’t break as good as she could have,” said trainer Danny Gargan, who took over train-ing of the filly from Kirk Ziadie earlier this month. “Paco said [Merry Meadow] acted up in the gate a little bit, then she took a step back and they sprung the latch. That’s why she wasn’t completely clear. But we had told him in the paddock, ‘go,’ which ended up being the right thing to do.”

Merry Meadow and My Wandy’s Girl tried to make a race of it into the stretch, but R Free Roll spurted clear to thwart those challenges.

A hole opened for La Verdad to come through on the inside, but she didn’t accelerate anything like she did in front-running victories in four consecu-tive stakes races heading into the Honorable Miss.

The field’s other two starters, second choice Speedinthruthecity and third choice Calistoga, tried to mount bids from the outside but never seriously threatened.

R Free Roll spurted clear again inside the eighth pole and it was only My Wandy’s Girl, winner of the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie two back and a close third in the Grade 2 Ruffian last time, that made a serious run. She didn’t get there, even as Lopez geared down R Free Roll in the final strides, and was 1 1/4 lengths back at the finish. Merry Mead-ow was third and La Verdad fifth in the worst per-formance of her 12-race career.

“I hit her a couple of times, waiting for the other horses, but nobody came,” Lopez said. “I had a lot of horse and she ran really well.”

Linda Rice, who trains La Verdad for Sheila Rosenblum’s Lady Sheila Stable, said she gave Jose Ortiz the choice to send the New York-bred daugh-ter of Yes It’s True or to take back off the expected speed of R Free Roll.

Ortiz obviously chose the latter, and when the kickback pelted her face it was clear that La Verdad wasn’t comfortable.

“I told him to figure it out on his own,” Rice said. “[Depending on] how she broke, if he wanted to sit off it, fine. If he wanted to go after it, either way. Jose said she didn’t like the mud in her face

and she would have rather run on the lead. Next time, we’ll go to the Bal-lerina, hopefully, and we’ll be on the lead.”

The Honorable Miss was the third straight victory for R Free Roll, who won the Hollywood Beach in April at Gulfstream and the U Can Do It in late May at Calder. It was also her first graded stakes win, after a close second in the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl last Decem-ber at Gulfstream and a fifth against males in the Grade 3 Carry Back on the 2013 Summit of Speed card.

Gargan didn’t have R Free Roll in his Saratoga barn long before the Honorable Miss. He knew plenty about the filly though, having been stabled in the same barn as Ziadie this winter at Gulfstream. Gargan was the first to admit there wasn’t much he could do with the filly, aside from breezing her a sharp half-mile six days before the race.

“I’ve seen this filly her whole life and I knew the mother,” Gargan said. “I was excited that he was going to send her to me. Like I’ve told every-body, it’s nice having a horse come right in and all you need to do is work them once, lead them over and win a Grade 2. If it was all that easy I’d have fun every weekend.”

The wet conditions that signifi-cantly changed Sunday’s card did the same thing Monday at Saratoga Race Course.

Four grass races were moved to the main track, including three of the first four on the program that ended the second week of racing at the Spa.

The sloppy and muddy condi-tions didn’t slow down Todd Pletch-er’s two starters and he added to his meet-leading victory total with wins in the fifth and sixth. Pletcher heads into the third week of racing with 10 wins, six more than Tony Dutrow, Bill Mott, Mike Maker and George Weaver.

“I felt like both horses would han-dle an off track OK,” Pletcher said after Bobby Flay’s Pecorino won the sixth, a 7-furlong maiden claiming race for a $50,000 tag. The 3-year-old Afleet Alex gelding won by 2 1/4 lengths and was claimed by trainer

on an off track after four in-the-mon-ey efforts on fast tracks.

“He had the pedigree for it, the right-sized foot,” Pletcher said, add-ing that he hadn’t even breezed the gelding on a wet track. “With the lit-tle bit of galloping we had done [on a wet track], we thought he did pretty well.”

Pletcher’s first win came with Re-pole Stable’s Village Warrior in the fifth, a 1 1/8-mile claiming race. The 3-year-old Majestic Warrior colt won by 6 lengths over Best Play and two others.

• Whether it was a drop in class, a switch to the sloppy main track, a shorter distance or natural improve-ment, it equaled a maiden victory for Frame in the fourth.

“It feels great,” trainer Tom Alber-trani after the 4-year-old Street Sense gelding ended his streak of futility in his eighth career start. “We knew the horse had some talent, but just kind of a notch below from being in a maiden special weight, so we thought we’d just give him a little class relief here. It was a good spot for him.”

Frame met a familiar foe in A Touch of Poetry in the race and both raced for a tag for the first time. A Touch of Poetry finished third for Nick Zito and Frame finished fifth in a June 8 maiden special weight at Bel-mont Park.

“He had to run with Nick’s horse that beat him last time, so they were both dropping in from the same race,” Albertrani said. “I think mine might have been training just a little more forwardly from the last race.”

Frame won by 2 lengths in the 5 ½-furlong off-the-turf race over

first-time starter War of Honor with A Touch of Poetry a length back in third.

“Five and a half helps him a lot because he’s got a lot of speed,” Al-bertrani said. “That was the winning touch that made the difference. It was a team effort, a team decision.”

• The crowd had dispersed and the box seats mostly emptied for the fina-le when Bedouin Now provided train-er Eugene Reiff with his first win since 2011 in a 1 1/8-mile claiming race.

Reiff walked victoriously into the winner’s circle after his 10th career victory, got his picture taken and went straight back to work to hose the mud of the 4-year-old son of Harlington. Bedouin Now, sent off at nearly 29-1, closed from the back of the back to win by 3 1/4 lengths over favored Zoebear.

“He’s run well on the grass, run well on the dry track and he’s run well on the sloppy track,” Reiff said. “It was just a question if the speed was tough to catch, because he is a one-run horse. If they get away with early, easy fractions he’s not going to get there.”

Race 1: Continuing our usual support of the steeplechase program (and anyone who knows me, KNOWS I back them at the windows as well), we’ll dive right into today’s opener. The #2/2B entry form a tough pair for Jack Fisher. As both are owned by Sheila Williams, I don’t see them knocking heads early (you don’t see piranhas eating other pi-ranhas, do you?) and envision EASY REACH setting it up for a rating VIRSITO, who won here back in ’12. #1A CHARMINISTER hasn’t seen the scene since Hector was a pup, but has a win and a second in only two attempts off an elongated layoff, and Murphy/Sloan crushing it to the tune of 6-for-8 since 2013. #3 EL SEASON bounced in last after two big wins to start out the year. Trained by the master, so include in exotics.

flying celebrations in front of the big screen in the clubhouse, maybe they had forgotten?

“We needed that. We needed that,” Kiaran McLaughlin said on his way to the winner’s circle. “We’ll get loud-er later when we have a little more confidence. We almost needed a GPS to find the winner’s circle.”

Consistently prolific at Saratoga, McLaughlin went winless with his first seven starters over the first nine cards. Well, almost nine cards. Godol-phin’s Antipathy slayed the duck with a professional score in Sunday’s fea-ture. Ridden by Irad Ortiz, she led early, backed off, and closed late to win by 2 lengths over Stanwyck and Hot Stones. Sent off a mild favorite in the field of seven, Antipathy secured her third career victory.

Antipathy broke sharply, clearing Swinger’s Party and Flashy American in three strides and led into the first turn. Ortiz braced against her, and in announcer Tom Durkin’s words, “deferred” as longshot Swinger’s Par-ty bounded past. Ortiz tapped the brakes enough to clear Swinger’s Par-ty’s heels and find a perfect stalking spot outside.

Like mooring a boat to a dock. Swinger’s Party led through a quar-

ter-mile in :23.65 and a half in :47.63 while Antipathy stalked. Leaving the backside, Unlimited Budget tried to force the issue but only forced one thing – Antipathy’s winning move. She collared Swinger’s Party with ease, rolling to the quarter pole with the race in control. Hot Stones made a run, Stanwyck made a run but both were in vain. Antipathy, under 12 right-handed smacks from Ortiz, drifted out but maintained her impul-sion to win comfortably, finishing 9 furlongs in 1:52.80.

“She broke very good, I don’t want to go crazy, Kiaran said if someone wants to go, let them go,” Ortiz said. “I took a hold of her and she sat back, she can get a little keen sometimes, she’s not easy to get to relax but she did today.”

Fresh off a huge effort in the Grade I Ogden Phipps at Belmont, Antip-athy is learning. Sent off 30-1, the 4-year-old A.P. Indy filly rattled on a hot pace early, then eased back and

re-rallied to miss by a neck behind two queens of the division, Close Hatches and Princess Of Sylmar.

It was a loss, but a breakthrough. “That day, I tried to take her

back a little but I couldn’t,” Ortiz said. “She broke good and tried to run off, then I just tried to hold my position and wait and wait and wait and she came back fighting. She just got beat, it was a very good race. To-day, she was much better. I was very confident the whole way. She broke on the lead, then I sit, wait, get clear, wait, wait.”

The Shuvee provided class relief. Antipathy and Stanwyck had placed in Grade 1 stakes while the rest of the field had achieved various lines of black type. The $200,000 stakes of-fered quality, but no queens. Yet.

Antipathy will try again, aiming at Close Hatches and Princess Of Syl-mar in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Aug. 22.

“We’ve always thought a lot of her, we were a little disappointed she got beat in allowance races, but they were a little better than allowance races when you look back at them,” McLaughlin said. “We’re very happy that she’s Grade 1 placed and a Grade 3 winner in the last six weeks.”

Antipathy broke her maiden in her third career start, winning at Gulfst-ream Park in March, 2013. She ran once more as a 3-year-old and then didn’t return January. Off a 10-month layoff, she won an optional claimer at Gulfstream Park. Two months later, she finished second to Natalie Vic-toria at Aqueduct. Five weeks later, she finished second to Belle Gallantey at Belmont Park in May. Better than they looked? Natalie Victoria won the Monmouth Beach Stakes in her next start and Belle Gallantey secured the Grade 1 Delaware Handicap two starts later.

“She’s a beautiful filly and it’s just nice to win for Godolphin slash Dar-ley,” McLaughlin said.

As for breaking the slump, Mc-Laughlin quickly dismissed the title.

“I don’t feel like we were in a slump, we were running 20-1, 10-1 shots, off layoffs. We needed to en-ter some liver horses and she was live,” McLaughlin said. “We’re used to winning, we are all competitive so it’s not fun for the whole team. You always want to win, especially here.”

Thunder echoed across the Saratoga Race Course grounds, shaking the grandstand timbers and pro-viding an ominous start to Sunday’s card. With the infield turf sufficiently saturated after overnight rain, racing was moved off the turf for the first time at the 2014 meeting.

The list of daily scratches was lengthy, the first race no exception. After moving from 1 1/16 miles on the Mellon Turf Course to 7 furlongs on the muddy main track, only a quartet remained as two-thirds of the entered field scratched.

Aptly named Sunday Sonnet won over the sealed surface, but showed no reservations about getting her feet wet.

“We were confident before all of the scratches,” Phil Threewitt, assistant to winning trainer Kelly Breen, said of the 2-year-old Any Given Saturday filly. “To be honest with you, we were hoping for what happened, [the race] to come off the turf. That’s why we had another horse in the entry. [Sun-day Sonnet] was going to run main track only, and we just took our chances and we took the best bet.”

After coming up short to the Todd Pletch-er-trained Angela Renee in a sprint on a fast track in June at Belmont Park, Sunday Sonnet broke her maiden in her second start with Jose Ortiz enjoying a near perfect trip.

“Jose said he didn’t ask this horse for anything; it was just a stroll in the park,” Threewitt said. “He said he had a ton of horse under him.”

Sunday Sonnet’s win Sunday marked the first of four favorites to win on the day.

• Electro Peg did her version of the Electric Slide in the paddock with trainer Louis Linder and valet Rodney Payne before the second.

The 4-year-old daughter of Fusaichi Pegasus thought the saddle wasn’t really necessary and did what she could to make it difficult for Linder and Payne to get her tacked up. They eventually did and

Electro Peg won the rained-off starter allowance go-ing 1 1/8 miles by 1 3/4 lengths in her local debut.

“She’s the type of horse that tries on any sur-face,” said Linder, who shipped Electro Peg in from his Parx Racing base Sunday morning.

Linder said if he returns with the filly later in the meet he’d be inclined to “come back a couple of days early” so she’s a little more settled.

• “How about those Super Savers?” Tony Dutrow joked Sunday after a 2-year-old by the 2010 Kentucky Derby winner won for the second consecutive day.

High Dollar Woman, a filly by Super Saver out of Melissa Jo, by Fusaichi Pegasus, won the third race going 6 furlongs. The victory came a day after the Todd Pletcher-trained Super Saver colt Compet-itive Edge won a similar 6-furlong maiden by 10 1/4 lengths.

Dutrow was equally thrilled to add High Dollar Woman’s victory to his victory with Big Trouble in the Grade 3 Sanford during the first weekend of the meet.

“We were keeping our fingers crossed that it would turn out this well, but the horses came here and trained really well,” Dutrow said.

High Dollar Woman bounced back from a fifth as the favorite in her de-but June 27 at Belmont.

“I thought she was a good filly and I thought she would run the first time and when she performed so poorly I was baffled,” Dutrow said.

Onlookers patted Dutrow on the back after the race and joked to the trainer, “You’re getting pretty good at this, huh?”

Alex Lieblong, who owns High Dollar Woman with his wife JoAnn, agreed. “Tony’s done a marvelous job with her,” he said. “He was feeling good all day.”

• Lunar Rover drew into the fourth from the main-track only list

and kicked it into four-wheel-drive in the rainy conditions.

“He’s got Cure the Blues on the bottom and most Cure The Blueses love a little bit of a wet track,” win-ning trainer Jim Bond said. “I did some history on his parents and they liked the mud, too.”

Lunar Rover, a son of Malibu Moon out of the stakes-winning Cure the Blues mare Queen’s Triomphe, won the 1 1/8-mile off-the-turf maid-en by 9 3/4 lengths under Shaun Bridgmohan. Bond said he was pretty confident the colt owned by his main client, William Clifton Jr., would

make trainer and jockey look good.“The trainer, all he did was lead

him over,” Bond said. “The jock, let him leave out of the gate. The rest is up to him.”

• Steve Klesaris wasn’t overly con-cerned as he watched favored Darn-ley Boy give his Lotsa Noodles a stern challenge in the stretch of the fifth race, a 1 1/8-mile off-the-turf claim-ing race.

“I always feel confident with her on a wet track,” said Klesaris, who owns and trains the 6-year-old daughter of

Mass Media out of the Beau Genius mare Lotsa Pasta. She won by 2 3/4 lengths for her first win of the season in three starts.

“I don’t think either one of them had a tremendous ‘wet-track’ pedi-gree,” Klesaris said of Lotsa Noodles’ sire and dam. Despite what the breed-ing says, Lotsa Noodles is effective on the off going, now with four wins in five starts on a wet track.

“We don’t ask questions we just put her in the wet when we can,” Kle-saris said. “I try to enter her accord-ing to the forecast.”

Jog your memory, dig deep into the banks and remember seeing $141.50 on the television monitors after the last race on the third day of the 2013 Saratoga meet.

Galiana, a then 3-year-old daughter of Stonesider, provided that payoff to her backers, however few and she returned 18 days later to win again. She only paid $17 that day, but two wins at Saratoga are two wins at Saratoga.

Galiana goes for a third today when she takes on another New York-bred fe-male with a fondness for Saratoga in Wil-let. Four others are entered in the third race, a 6-furlong $85,000 allowance for state-breds, but this one might be all Wil-let and Galiana or Galiana and Willet.

Rodolfo Romero, a former assistant to Tim Ritchey who is based at Delaware Park, owns and trains Galiana.

“We learned [last year at Saratoga] that she doesn’t like to be rushed, nev-er pushed,” Romero said. “She [doesn’t] like pushing, rush, rush, rush.”

Abel Lezcano followed Romero’s in-structions and didn’t ask Galiana too much too soon in her two Saratoga wins last year, which came before a fifth-place finish behind Willet and others in the Union Avenue Stakes 11 days after her second win. She bounced out of that win with a victory in a small stakes at Dela-ware Park before ending the season with a sixth behind eventual New York-bred Horse of the Year Cluster of Stars, Willet and others in the Iroquois.

Galiana came to Saratoga last year with a victory in a maiden claiming race for a $7,500 tag and an eighth-place fin-ish in a $30,000 claimer. She’s won four times already this season, including the Dashing Beauty and Sweet and Sassy at Delaware Park.

Marscaponi won every time out this spring. He was champion Thoroughbred Hunter at the Lexington Spring Premiere, a winner in the Thoroughbred division at HITS Culpeper and the adult division in the Maryland Thoroughbred Charity Show.

Marscaponi won at Saratoga in 2009 and again at Aqueduct in 2010. Retired in 2011, the New York-bred son of Volponi became a champion in his second career.

Jay Hovdey walked into the Mt. Washington Tavern two days before the Preakness, ordered a Guinness and tossed me his book, Long Rein, Tales from the World of Horse Racing.

I’ve been reading it ever since. Never more than three pages at a time, drone strikes into the last 15 years of Thoroughbred racing.

To his count, Hovdey has written more than 2,500 columns and a “bushel basket” of long-form pieces for Daily Racing Form. He and editor Frank Scatoni picked 81 to include in the book.

I’ve read most of them before, in the moment, when emotions were raw, memories still forming. Stealing 10 minutes between sets from Dad’s Form spread across the tack-room counter or from under a bowl of cereal in a rental on Lake Avenue or read aloud by a girlfriend as we drove to the races.

I’ll admit it, there were times when I wished I had written them. I don’t say that very often. Well I don’t admit that very often. Of course Hemingway, man, I wish I could write like Hemingway. Red Smith and Gary Smith. And Kerouac…oh hell, nobody could write like Kerouac. When it comes to racing, I’ve said it most often when reading Hovdey, when he provided a semblance of order to a disorderly game.

Still, for the most part, Zenyatta’s impact has been that of a steadily rising tide, with no ebb in sight. Her fans have come to terms with the fact that there is no splashy Triple Crown appearance deco-rating her record, no daring trip to Dubai, no signif-icant shifts in surface, distance, or, for that matter, weather. In some ways, Zenyatta’s career has been a controlled experiment, or at least as controlled an experiment as possible when dealing with the chaos inherent in the handling of a Thoroughbred race-horse.

For a writer, reading isn’t free. You can’t help but think about how a writer came up with that angle, how he mined that insight from an impenetrable subject, why the story went one direction instead of the other, how it was written so quickly but so accu-rately, how your best stuff measures up. Sometimes, indeed, you wish you wrote it.

In his own manner, insistent and steady, the Thoroughbred known as John Henry has been ev-ery bit as important to his own constituency as are the great leaders of human civilization. He was a performer of unflinching honesty, generous in vic-tory, gallant in defeat. Horse racing could count on John Henry, year after year, to put the game in head-lines and people in the seats.

The first time was when Hovdey wrote about jockey Mark Johnston, involved in a tragic spill, ev-ery hard-chosen word showed the pain and strain of being a jockey. I wished I had written those words, I called up Rich Rosenbush, editor of the Form at the time, and asked him for a job. The Johnston story is

not included in the collection and that’s as close to a brook critic as I’ll get. Hovdey did include the sto-ry on jockey J. C. Gonzalez, killed at Fairplex Park September 9, 1999, which sums up every fall, every injury, every death from horseback. Having hit the ground and wondered – in real time – if I was going to live or die, reading about 23-year-old jockey J. C. Gonzalez made me look at the sky.

On Friday at Fairplex Park, J. C. Gonzalez was named to ride Service Term in the first Thorough-

bred race of the day. Iggy Puglisi filled in and rode Service Term to a two-length victory, then wiped a tear from his eye as he entered the winner’s circle and joined in the ceremony of a remembrance. In the fifth race Friday, Gonzalez would have ridden a horse named Ayer Hoy Manana. It means “yester-day today tomorrow.”

When Eddie Gregson died in 2000, I was strug-gling with what I thought were demons. Knowing the publishing schedule of the Form, I waited, pre-paring for Hovdey’s words. Hovdey somehow put eloquence and insight into Gregson’s suicide, I was glad I didn’t have to write those words. It was the first one I read, just to get it over with.

The Mercedes was clearly parked in a hurry. The wheels are still raked hard to the left where the driv-er made his turn into the lot. The interior of the car is practically empty, save for a bottle of water in the backseat, racetrack dust on the floor mats, and a black-and-white 5x7 photograph, propped on the console behind the gearshift knob, depicting a show-jump rider being pitched head over heels from the top of a reluctant horse.

“Eddie loved that picture,” said Trudy McCaffery, one of Eddie Gregson’s best friends. “Whenever he was having a bad day, he would look at the photo and be reminded that it was never going as bad as it was for the guy in the picture.”

Last Sunday, it got that bad. Whether it’s the pain of Antley, Gonzalez and

Gregson or the joy of Frankel (horse and man), Af-firmed and Zenyatta, or the stories of Nerud, Jerk-ens and Shoemaker, Hovdey delivers with 81 jaunts through Thoroughbred racing. Most of them, I wish I wrote. I can’t give a higher compliment.
