From the Pastor's DeskDown, Out, and Loved with Compassion

The lawn is depressed. Said no one ever. When it is a drought and the lawn turns brown, the lawn is not depressed. The lawn has simply had its wiring kick in that told it to go into survival mode and put everything into the roots. The lawn is not dying; it is simply surviving. But no one says it is depressed.

The apple trees dropped their fruit. Are they depressed? No one would say so. Again it is a hard-wiredresponse to drought. The trees will devote all of their energy to keeping the branches alive rather than fillingin some fruit at the end of the branches. The apple tree has gone into survival mode, doing just enough to stayalive until the moisture level reaches what it requires to make fruit again.

In both cases here, the plants have pulled themselves in a little, the situation dictates that they be a little lesslively so that they may survive the moment for the sake of the future. But we would never label themdepressed even though that is exactly what they are.

Depression is not in and of itself an illness. Depression is a natural, healthy, response to a depressing situation. In nature, if a situation is not normal, the living creature draws back into itself a little bit so that it may survivethe moment. If you are of Northern European stock you may know this already. Are you one of those oneswho gets a little less lively, loses energy, when the days get short? Doctors call it SADD (you know it must bereal; they made an acronym!). It means Seasonal Affective Depressive Disorder. It is not a disorder! It meansthat we are operating just the way we were designed to operate. Precisely when being outside would be themost hazardous, and precisely when nutrition is the most scarce (because you live in a four-month tundra!),precisely when you feel like hunkering down inside your hovel and doing the least. If you lived as you lived inthe summer, you would eat all your squirreled away food and be dead before Lent. But notice that we label aperfectly healthy and natural response to being from a northern climate a depressive disorder. Isn’t it hardenough to be human without inventing even more ways to hate ourselves?

I think this is why ski jumping, hockey, and curling were invented. Only someone hankering for a littleexcitement would strap slick pieces of wood to their feet and go sliding off a cliff. No one contentedly sippingdaiquiris on a sun-drenched beach would dream of putting knives on their feet, taking sticks, and slidingaround ice in an enclosed space, and firing a hard disk at a hundred miles an hour at a man guarding arectangle. When MacTavish and MacDoofus polished up some granite to slide at a target on the ice, they weredesperate for a reason to get out of the house. Cabin fever!

What we call depression is actually a natural response to a depressing situation. We fight it a little bit becauseof that particular human quality of trying to make life richer – art, games, sports all come from this innate ideathat life is more than survival and may have been born out of depression.

But we, unfortunately, have labeled normal things an illness. Athletes that lose an important game are going tobe depressed and should be for a little while. And someone who loses a beloved spouse or friend is going to bedepressed, too. They should be because they need to learn a new way to live, slowly. Even being depressedwhile you are ill is normal and right, because it means that you take yourself out of circulation and infect fewerpeople.

What I am saying is to give each other and ourselves a break. Be compassionate. When people are depressedlet’s not see them as failures but let’s just realize that it is their turn. And love them. And when the depressiontakes root and is really unhealthy, when it goes too far, let our compassion and love match it.

We are just the way God made us to be. With our passions and whims and wills and sweets and sours and allthat makes us human and all that God called ‘very good’.

In Christ, Pastor Joel

Let all that we do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14

Stewardship Message“Don’t Give ‘til it hurts’, rather ‘give til it feels good”

We have been discussing the waningperformance of our projector in the sanctuaryand received a quote to replace the currentequipment. A new projector and some requiredchanges to other support electronics required forthe new digital system would cost about $9200.Council approved that these funds be requestedfrom the Memorial Committee. If this funding isapproved, the equipment would be orderedASAP.

Liz Robbins presented a report from the PewCushion Replacement Taskforce. Their fabricchoice was approved, and they will be setting upa display in the Narthex to publicize the projectand begin to solicit funds. The cost would beapproximately $15,000.This would be a non-budgeted item, and the council indicatedthat we felt that most funds should be raisedbefore signing a contract.

An information presentation was presented bythe Columbarium Taskforce regarding what acolumbarium is, where it might be sited on ourgrounds, and potential costs. They will beavailable at the July congregational meeting toanswer questions and will proceed to get a moredetailed design proposal if that item is approvedas part of our long-range plan.

Receiving vs. Giving – The Perception

We have all heard the admonition, “It is better togive than to receive.” Is that really the case, or arethey equal in God’s eye?

A rather shabbily attired Hispanic man sat in aclinic waiting room. A few minutes later, a well-dressed couple entered with their youngdaughter and proceeded to find a seat as farremoved from the young Hispanic man aspossible.

An unexpected surprise followed as a nursecalled all four of them into the surgeon’s office. The surgeon commented on how well the younggirl looked and how promising her follow-up testsseemed. Imagine, if you will, the expressions ofthe family when the surgeon introduced theyoung Hispanic man as their daughter’s bonemarrow donor!Giving and receiving….pretty much the same.“Don’t give ‘til it hurts, rather give ‘til it feels good.”

Pew Cushion and Communion Kneeler Cushion ReplacementA new Task Force has been formed to address the replacement of our pew cushions andcommunion kneeling cushions. The pew cushions and communion kneeling cushions do not fit intothe present color scheme of our updated carpeting and window shades in our sanctuary. We havebeen in contact with Waggoner’s Inc. in Hutchinson KS to obtain an estimate for replacement of$15,055.00 which includes new fabric, foam cushions and labor. The price we have been quoted isvalid until August 31, 2021 with a price increase on September 1, 2021.

We have our choice of fabric which has been approved by the Church Council and have gotten theirapproval for raising funds for this project. You will find a sample of the fabric on a display in ournarthex, the same fabric will be used for both the pew cushions and communion kneeler cushions. This fabric has a Dupont Teflon fabric protecter against stains, we also have a 15 year warranty onthe pew upholstery and reupholstery. The replacement of the pew cushions will be done betweenSundays so as not to interrupt our worship service schedule. Our communion kneeler cushions willbe manufactured in Kansas and sent by truck freight to First Lutheran.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8: "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoeversows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in yourheart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

We are truly blessed with the ability to provide financial support to so many worthy projects, andindividuals, through both the Endowment and Memorial Funds.

As a reminder, the FLC Endowment Fund was established to receive memorial or honorary giftsthat are invested in perpetuity. That means we can use the annual earnings to provide funds whilethe fund continues to grow. The Fund has provided for over $10,000 in just this last year solelyfrom earnings. Please consider a gift to the endowment fund. It will be a gift that will keep giving tomany for years to come. Flyers can be found in any of the pews or in the church office. There arevery informational.

The Memorial Fund continues to receive gifts that can be spent currently to meet the special needsof the congregation not being met by the church’s annual budget.

2021-2022 funding requests and forms can be directed to the committee through the churchoffice. Requests should be turned in 10 days before the quarterly meeting so the committee canreview and understand. The next meeting is Wednesday, August 11th. Please have all requestssubmitted by Sunday, August 1st.

We are God's children. As found in the words of Romans 8:16, "The Spirit himself testifies withour spirit that we are heirs---heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in hissufferings so that we may also share in his glory."

It would appear that, unfortunately, many forget our association with Our Creator when itcomes to "associating" with certain others. Hence, the sins of racism abound and flourish overtime. Just recently, the horrid example of Tulsa was before us. How do we feel when looking atsomeone different from ourselves? Do we remember that we are all God's children? Do weremember that God doesn't differentiate? That we should love others as we have been loved?Let us remember, lest we forget!

Dear Father, Help me when I am tempted in this life, for I wish to remain faithful. Your lovemeans the world to me---let me share it whenever and wherever I may.

In Christ,Amen

SCAM ALERTS from Sawyer County Sherriff's Department

In today's world, we have to be mindful of many types of scams. Some of the larger ones in our area are:

Grandparent Scams: people pretending to be grandkids call to say that they are in trouble, need money, and not to tell their parents. Phone Scams: warranty issues or upgrades, social security surveys, insurance, investments. Door-To-Door Scams: construction workers, roofers, etc.

Please use caution with anything that seems "off". Get their phone number to call them back after youdo research. Ask questions that only the "true" family member would know the answer to. And do notlet people in your homes or access your computers. Do not share your personal information. For more information go to the Sawyer County Sherriff's Department website to stay alert on currentscams and be sure to report any scam that comes to you at: Sawyer County Adult Protective Servicesat 715-634-4806 or Report Elder Abuse Wisconsin at 1-833-586-0107 (www.ReportElderAbuseWI.org).Click Here for More Information.

This year the Outreach Committee’s Back to School project will involve providing clothing for theelementary school children. In talking with the school officials, the need for backpacks and suppliesisn’t urgent. What they really need is to have spare clothing on hand for the kids. There will be a boardput up in the narthex with the clothing needs as requested from the schools. Watch the bulletin formore information.

It’s the beginning of August, and here we are in “crunch time.” Between finishing up our summerbucket lists and preparing for the school year, time is not in our favor. We run here and run there, crossing all the things we want to do off our lists. Making new lists, as let’s face it, we never canremember everything to put on these lists until we do something else and spark it. The lists grow justas fast as you cross them off. It’s August…the month of summer-ending/school-starting chaos.

This is the first summer that I didn’t put together a bucket list of summer items in many years. Ididn’t put goals or activities down on paper of what I wanted to do this summer. The obvious reasonis school, of course. I dedicated this summer to two seminary classes (Travel Mission in Context andBiblical Hebrew). Both classes take time, especially Hebrew. However, the main reason for throwingout the list was to take the pressure off completing it.

I love to-do lists. They give me a drive for what I need to do. Typically, I don’t stop working until Icross every item off my list. It’s a great way to stay focused on the tasks. So, when it comes to abucket list of fun, I am the same way. I don’t want to stop until it is all done. However, do I reallywant to look at the list, do the activity and cross it off? Or, do I want to do an activity where I canengage the moment, embrace what is happening, take stock in the memories? When we have a list of‘things-to-do,’ and we only do them to cross it off the list, what really is the point? Did anything getlearned? Was there really an experience?

If there is one thing I have learned, it is to slow down and truly enjoy what is happening around me.Life is busy, and that isn’t going to change anytime soon. Instead of adding more chaos to an alreadychaotic schedule, throw out the list of plans and experience what God is giving to you. Yes, there arethings that we “must” do in August:

·Go school shopping (clothes, shoes, supplies)·Get back into a routine (bedtimes, breakfast times, dinner times, planned lunches)·Arrange schedules to fit the new season (make a calendar, have a plan)·Come back to regular church worship, events, and activities

I challenge you to throw out the list and embrace whatever God is calling you to do each day.Whatever it is that you do, give it all of your attention. Put your phone down, throw out the list, closethe door. Are you having a beach party? Well, grab your beach attire and embrace the lake, the beach, and the people around you. Are you attending worship? Well, shut off your phone, sit down and openyour eyes, call on God to sit with you, and let God’s words lead your thoughts. Are you going schoolshopping with your kids? Turn down the music and have conversations, take time for a meal and talkduring it. Are you taking one last camping trip? Sit around the fire and learn what your family isthinking and feeling. Whatever it is that you are doing, ignite the relationships around you. Take inthe beauty of the moment.

The month of August is exhausting. We run and try to do everything we thought we would have“time” for all summer long. And now that we only have a month left to accomplish “the list,” we arepressured. Stop! God is calling you into something different. God is asking you to take a breath andlive the moments, not the checklists.

Many blessings~ Tiffany Chipman

This summer is just going too fast. Truthfully I forgot the deadline for the First Word, so I am scrambling, and then there was the Annual Report to get in also. But summers push us to reach out and travel as theweather is conducive for it. And we can reunite with one another. This year was an exception becausethe COVID inoculations freed us to meet and travel. We can sure see it here in Hayward as the traffic andthe stores are filled with vacationers and families. We are blessed to live in this beautiful area with theforests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife in abundance and the four seasons. A great vacationland. We are blessedwith visitors.

One of the things I enjoy each summer is my mother's family reunion held every summer over the Fourthof July. I would expect all the visitors that you get living up here in the north, where lakes are inabundance, with family and friends. My reunion is in Chetek, Wisconsin, held just a few miles from wheremy earliest relatives arrived from Norway in the late 1800s at the fork of two rivers, the Chetek and theRed Cedar. We have been gathering over the Fourth for as long as I can remember. We always have aprogram, and this year it was a guest from the Chetek Historical Society talking of our Norwegian roots inthis area and the place the Native Americans played. I was privileged to get to see a NorwegianHardanger Fiddle and hear it played. The sound of this beautiful instrument was as beautiful as the ivoryin-lade and beautiful carvings on it. It is different from a violin as it has eight or nine strings, and one ortwo are under the main ones. The speaker brought and played the fiddle; she was of Native Americandescent and was adopted by a Caucasian family but spent time in Norway as an adult. Just one of thehighlights of our time together. There is something about family and how God gives us this agape loveand the need to gather. There were seven siblings in this family, so each family takes their turn to facilitatethe Red Cedar event. About 50 aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandchildren gather for three days of catchingup. Many stay at Luther Park. They come from Seattle to New York and all parts in between. I feel soblessed to come from this loving family. I guess this is a little personal, but I hope it brings you fondmemories of summers with your families. May God Bless your summer and fill it with Happy Times.

New updates and reminders:

In the absence of our Circles meetings in July and August, we had a potluck with our church women andguests. Pastor Joel led an interesting study. Thank you, everyone, that joined us. I am hopeful for ourmeeting times to return in September.

These are three sessions, and inDecember, we will have a New Advent study.

Where else do you have everyone doing the same thing at the same time without theuse of special equipment and for a greater purpose, and no one is sitting on the bench?"~Submitted by Patty VanLandschoot

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

God's work. Our hands. We are a Church that is deeply rooted—and always being made new.

If anyone is in Christ...We are deeply rooted.  The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is still comparatively new as aChurch body, and yet our roots are much deeper than our 25 years together.  The taproot of ourlife extends through the histories of predecessor Churches in the United States, through theformative witness of the 16th century evangelical reformers and their confessional writings, to theScriptures and the word of Christ.  Our life is in Jesus Christ.  We are deeply rooted in his word offorgiveness and the promises of God’s steadfast love and mercy.  The word of Christ dwells in usrichly.  God nourishes us as one body in Jesus Christ with companions from around the globe whomeet us at Christ’s table of grace.…there is a new creationWe are being made new every day.  In Jesus Christ we are not unchanged.  What God does in Christis as radical as the death and resurrection of baptism, where new creatures in Christ rise to live “nolonger for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them.”  God is bringing that newcreation to life among us in the ministry of reconciliation.  In that service we no longer see eachother as we did before.  We are no longer strangers, competitors or enemies to each other.  We arebeloved companions in one body, restored to a communion where the rich diversity of ourexperiences, wisdom and abilities serve the common good in Christ.  The new creation in Christrises to life among us every day.
