WHAT ARE THE INSTRUCTOR TO STUDENT RATIOS?Land based activities usually operate in group sizes not exceeding 1:10 and water activities of 1: 8, or 1:10 depending on venue and craft. We generally expect a teacher to be available during the session and to support the instructor with students who have specific needs.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE BRITISH WEATHER DOESN’T COOPERATE?Course directors will endeavour to alter your programme to take account of the weather. If an activity has to be cancelled, an alternative will be provided. Many of our centres have a range of activities which can be carried out in all weathers.
WHAT RISK ASSESSMENTS DO WE NEED?All activities are delivered based on a thorough risk assessment process in line with HSE and industry standards. Where appropriate, students are encouraged to identify the risks associated with the activity, so that they can be fully involved in the risk management process.
If your school or college uses the HCC EVOLVE system for trip approvals, all our centres have been pre-inspected and you can be assured that the necessary risk assessments and operational procedures are in place. Your EVC will be able to provide more information on this.
Visiting party leaders are responsible for risk assessing the journey to and from a centre, as well as students with individual needs and the arrangements for contacting your school in an out-of-hours emergency.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PASTORAL SUPERVISION AND BEHAVIOUR?Visiting party leaders are responsible for the pastoral supervision of students at all times. During activity sessions, our instructors provide all necessary safety supervision and will manage the group with your guidance and support. All centres provide at least an on-call manager overnight to assist with emergency situations.
WHAT INSURANCE ARRANGEMENTS ARE THERE?Hampshire County Council provides insurance arrangements for its local education authority schools. Most other education authorities and independent schools have similar arrangements, otherwise we recommend that you take out insurance to cover risk of accident, illness, loss of personal possessions and cancellation. Hampshire County Council only accepts liability for loss, damage or injury resulting from negligence by the County Council, its servants or agents.
WHAT QUALITY OF INSTRUCTION CAN I EXPECT?Instructors at Hampshire Outdoor Centres are highly experienced and undergo rigorous training to ensure the physical and emotional safety of participants. Continued Professional Development for all staff ensures that our programmes are delivered to a consistently high standard.
All our centres operate a ‘Challenge by Choice’ ethos. Instructors will encourage students to extend themselves and focus on working effectively with others.
HOW WILL YOU SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL?Our instructors and course directors will discuss group and individual student progress with you and your school staff to ensure you are fully informed each step of the way.
WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO SAFETY?Safety of your students and staff is paramount. Many of our staff hold high level National Governing Body qualifications (NGBs) across a range of activities. All staff complete a comprehensive induction programme to ensure consistency in delivery, so that our high standards are maintained. Other examples of our commitment to safety include:
• All instructors have a valid first aid qualification
• All our staff have an enhanced DBS certificate and are re-checked regularly
• All our equipment undergoes regular and rigorous safety checks and maintenance
• All minibus drivers are trained and assessed through the MIDAS scheme
WHAT MEMBERSHIPS AND AFFILIATIONS DO THE CENTRES HAVE?Our centres are proud to hold a variety of accreditations for success and quality. Please see www.hants.gov.uk/outdoors for individual centre accreditations.
