The Edison Apartments is a five-story, Georgian Revival style mixed-use structure constructed in the early twentieth century. The structure features retail space on the ground floor and twelve residential apartments on the upper floors. The building is scheduled for demolition in January of 2018.

Although the ground floor storefronts were removed, the building retains many original features including original six-over-one wooden sash windows throughout, tin ceilings in the ground floor commercial space, and a common central staircase from the ground floor to the fifth floor as well as an internal lightwell to illuminate the northeast apartment units. Each apartment unit had three multi-purpose rooms and a bathroom featuring wood floors, French doors, and built-in kitchen cabinetry.

Edison Apartments is an early twentieth century

(probably the 1920s), Georgian Revival style, commercial

structure which has storerooms on the first floor and

apartments on the upper levels. The structure is built of

brick and is five stories high including a mansard roof.

The principal facade (east side) is symmetrically arranged

and has recessed center balconies on the middle floors,

quoining along the edges and balconies, and a modillioned

cornice. The upper levels of the facade appear to be

original in condition.

Edison Apartments stands at 13-19 South Potomac Street in Hagerstown, Washington County, and is located on the west side Qf the street in the northern third of the block formed by Public Square and Antietam Street.

The building is an early twentieth century, center-city, Georgian Revival style apartment building which is constructed of brick with stone decorative detailing on the facade and a tile covered mansard roof. The structure is five stories high, including the floor nestled under the mansard roof, and sits tight to the sidewalk and the neighboring building on the north. A classical cornice with modillions runs along the east and south elevations. The first or ground floor of the building has store­rooms flanking the center entranceway leading to the upper stories.

The principal facade (east side) is symmetrically arranged into three portions and has center recessed balconies on the second, third, and fourth floors, and sets of double-windows in the outer sections. The windows are of the double-hung, wood sash type with six-over-one lights and stone lintels with keystones. The balconies have metal railings and project outward slightly. The corners of.the building and the balconies are outlined with quoins.

The eastern or front section of the structure is built of a better grade of brick than that of the remaining portion which was not originally visible from the street. The mansard roof is pierced with gable roof dormers, three along the facade and six along the south side. The dormers have rectangular double-hung windows like those in the lower stories.

The building is structurally sound. The upper levels appear to be fairly original in condition.

Edison Apartments is an early twentieth century apartment building which is located in the central business district of Hagerstown. It is representative of the Georg~a.n Revival style and has the characteristic symmetrical facade (east side), quoining, and classical cornice •

The building probably dates from the 1920s when the neo-colonial style was one of the various eclectic forms popular across the United States. The structure is referred to as the Lakin Apartments in a 1930s city directory. J. Brooks Lakin and Lester T • Ridenour purchased the property in 1923 and may have had the building erected (Deed Book 167, p. 149). The present name, Edison Apartments, is derived from that of the present owner.

An architecturally similar structure which was probably erected about the same time stands at the intersection of Potomac Street and Potomac Avenue at Oak Hill Avenue, about six blocks north of Public Square.
