    Dear Customer,

Each year, we take hundreds of thousands of water quality tests. I am pleased to share with you that for 2011, MWRA again met every federal and state drinking water standard. System-wide, we have been below the Lead Action Level for the past eight years. Please read the letter on page 4 for more information on your local water system.

We are fortunate to have inherited one of the country’s great water systems. And MWRA continues its work to make the water system even better, with construction of new water storage tanks and pipeline projects to improve redundancy - to ensure we can still deliver water if there is a major break. We are also adding ultra-violet light disinfection at our water treatment plant.

This report is essentially a nutrition label for your water. We hope that you take a moment to read it and to learn about your water system. We want you to share our confidence in your drinking water.

    Sincerely,

Frederick A. LaskeyExecutive DirectorFrederick A. LaskeyExecutive Direeeeecto

The Town of Arlington Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) are pleased to provide you with the 2011 Drinking Water Quality Report. The MWRA treats and delivers water to many cities and towns in the area. The Town distributes the water through our pipe network into your home or business.

Water Main Rehabilitation and ReplacementLast year, through the MWRA’s Local Pipeline Assistance Program, the Town was able to replace 2,400 linear feet of water main in Forest Street in anticipation of fully reconstructing the roadway. An additional estimated 4,000 linear feet of water main work is planned for the spring of 2012 on Kensington Road, Brantwood Road, and a portion of Kensington Park. The MWRA program, which provides interest free loans to the Town, assists Arlington’s efforts to upgrade an aging system. These upgrades serve to improve water quality and decrease the potential for main breaks and leaks.

Arlington also conducted a comprehensive leak survey in 2011 with assistance from the MWRA. The survey, typically conducted every other year, helps the Town identify hidden problems within the system in an effort to reduce lost water and proactively address issues before they possibly become a more serious problem.

Water QualityThe DPW collects water quality samples at various locations throughout the Town on a weekly basis. In addition, lead and copper samples are collected at fifteen homes twice a year. The results of these tests are included here:

September 2011 Lead and Copper Results (ppb=parts per billion)

Range 90% Value (Target) Action Level

    Lead (ppb) 1.2-10.7 3.31 15 Copper (ppb) 17-158 109 1300

The DPW and MWRA continue to work together to provide you the highest quality water available. We ask that you take the time to read this report. If you have any questions or comments please contact Kent Larson with the Arlington DPW at 781-316-3102 or the Arlington Board of Health at 781-316-3170. Please visit www.arlingtonma.gov for additional information regarding the Arlington DPW, Board of Health, or on public meetings.
