VLSC

High Level:

The Microsoft® Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) is used by agencies to review volume licensing agreements and transactions, download software they have licensed, and access the product keys required to activate the software. On August 15, 2011, Microsoft released an update to VLSC. This new release of the VLSC reflects the input Microsoft have received from partners and over 1,000 users worldwide through interviews and online feedback.

Please contact [email protected] to ensure you have access to VLSC.

SA BENEFITS - Training Vouchers (SATV)

High Level:

All courses are taught at CPLSs by Microsoft certified trainers using Microsoft official courses.

Process:

1. Trainee to email Filipa Preston [email protected] requesting a voucher to be created.

2. Please confirm whether trainee has received the email from Microsoft confirming voucher has been created.

3. Next action to validate the voucher and sit the course.

4. The trainee must provide the training voucher number and the email address that he or she used when creating the voucher. If one of these items is incorrect, the Learning partner will not be able to validate the voucher.

What courses are available?

A = Available courses are those that have been created for IT Professional or Developer participants. Courses that are NOT eligible include those created for end users – for example Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Microsoft Hands-on labs, First Look Clinics and beta courses also are not eligible for Software Assurance Training Vouchers. You may accommodate end user education through your SA E-Learning Benefits. SA TechNet offers advanced education for IT Pros.

Will the employee receive a hard copy training voucher from Microsoft?

No, Software Assurance training vouchers exist in electronic format only. A designated employee could print out the reservation confirmation page and submit it to the Learning partner for verification if requested. The reservation confirmation page is sent to the employee automatically when the voucher is created.

Licensing Review

Definition of a Qualified Desktop

For reference, the Qualified Desktop, Qualified User, and Industry Device definition for the Microsoft Enterprise Agreement. Also how to handle Portable devices below and the caveat when looking at the apparent conflict with the Qualified Device definition.

Page 11: WA WHOLE OF GOVERNMENT (WA WOG) MICROSOFT · PDF fileKMS & MAK Keys ... The Microsoft® Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) is used by agencies to review volume licensing agreements

Office Portable Use Rights

a) Licensed Device. Before you use the software under a license, you must assign that license to one device (physical hardware system). That device is the “licensed device.” A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device.

You may install and use any number of copies of the software and of any prior version of the software on the licensed device.

Except as described in the Remote Access section below, only one user may use the copies on the licensed device at a time.

You may reassign a license, but not on a short-term basis (i.e., not within 90 days of the last assignment). If you reassign a license, the device to which you reassign the license becomes the new licensed device for that license.

b) Portable Device. You may install a copy on a portable device for use by the single primary user of the licensed device.

c) Network Device. You may also install additional copies on a network device. You may only use those copies as described in the Remote Access section below.

Page 12: WA WHOLE OF GOVERNMENT (WA WOG) MICROSOFT · PDF fileKMS & MAK Keys ... The Microsoft® Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) is used by agencies to review volume licensing agreements

Laptops in an EA

PUR grants “Portable Use Rights” not secondary, just a bit of nomenclature that keeps it focused on the type of device. Portable Use rights are granted in all the VL programs that do not have the concept of “qualified desktop” in the agreement. So for all but OV-CW, OVS and EA & EAS this is a applicable clause of the PUR. In the programs where we count “qualified desktops” the agreement language dictates that ALL qualified desktops (portable or not) must be included in the desktop count.

KMS & MAK keys

Product activation homepage: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/existing-customers/product-activation.aspx (it is really useful)

High Level:

Agencies can use one of two main activation modes:

Multiple Activation Key (MAK)

Key Management Service (KMS)

MAK Activation

For relatively small numbers of activations, agencies may activate software through a Multiple Activation Key (MAK), which can be sent directly from each computer to Microsoft. Alternatively, data can be collected from multiple computers onto a single MAK proxy computer (MAK Proxy) and sent from that proxy computer to Microsoft. For larger activations, volume customers can use Key Management Services (KMS), in which keys are distributed exclusively from a server owned and hosted by the agency.

Page 13: WA WHOLE OF GOVERNMENT (WA WOG) MICROSOFT · PDF fileKMS & MAK Keys ... The Microsoft® Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) is used by agencies to review volume licensing agreements

KMS Activation

KMS activation is designed for medium to large agencies with volume-licensed products that require activation. With KMS activation, Microsoft essentially trusts the agency to activate the Microsoft software products it uses under its Volume License Agreement against an in-house activation service instead of the Microsoft-hosted Activation Service. Microsoft is willing to trust agencies because with KMS, Microsoft and the agency can detect when an agencies KMS keys have been compromised and take appropriate action.

To use KMS, an agency must have a combination of at least five servers or 25 desktop, laptop, or virtual machines (VMs) running products that need activation. (A product that requires activation when running on physical hardware must also be activated when running on a VM.) The threshold limit is designed to restrict KMS activation to Microsoft's larger customers.

Do all products require a KMS or MAC Key

Not all products require a key. The below website has all the server products that require a key, if the server is not on here, it does not require a key. Some examples : - SCCM Server, SCOM Server, Lync Server and FTMG.

http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/existing-customers/product-activation-results.aspx?Category=Servers

My server is asking for a Server Setup key

Some products require a Server Setup key, so the key is not on the VLSC site where the keys are listed, BUT when you go to the download section in VLSC the 25 digit key will be given to: so from your list Exchange Server Standard and Enterprise 2010 have a Server Setup Key.

Volume Activation Management Tool

While MAK Independent and KMS activation rely on command-line activation management tools, Microsoft does offer a tool that provides a single, graphical user interface for managing activations and for performing other activation-related tasks, such as automating the volume activation process and diagnosing problems.

This tool is called the Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT), and it ships as part of the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) to facilitate the use of MAK Proxy and KMS when using Windows Imaging to deploy Windows. The VAMT can manage both KMS and MAK activation for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Office 2010, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2 using either MAK Proxy or KMS. It cannot manage activation for Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, but Microsoft doesn't require volume license customers to activate these products.

Adding and removing computers—VAMT can discover computers in the local environment and organize them in administrator-defined groups.

Monitoring Windows activation status—VAMT can collect activation information about each computer, including the last five characters of the product key being used,

Page 14: WA WHOLE OF GOVERNMENT (WA WOG) MICROSOFT · PDF fileKMS & MAK Keys ... The Microsoft® Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) is used by agencies to review volume licensing agreements

the current activation (license) state (such as activated, in grace period, or in notification state), and the Windows edition.

Managing MAKs—VAMT can store multiple MAK keys and determine the number of activations remaining for each MAK key.

Managing activation data—VAMT stores activation data in an XML-formatted Computer Information List (CIL), which could be used to generate additional reports.

VAMT is designed for agencies that are using Windows imaging to deploy standard file-based Windows disk images to multiple PCs. Its primary purpose is to simplify deployment of Windows and Office by helping agencies preactivate customized images before deploying them. However, there do not appear to be any restrictions on using it as an activation management tool, even if the agency is not creating any custom images.

Office Activation Details

Specific products have different product activation details. With Office 2010, all Office desktop products, regardless of edition must be activated.

A KMS activation service capable of activating Office 2010 can be deployed only on Windows 2003 SP1, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2. It cannot be deployed on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

By default, volume licensing editions of Office 2010 are preconfigured as KMS clients, and no additional configuration is needed, as they will find the KMS service and activate.

For Office 2010, the MAK activation is 30 days. During a grace period, Office will attempt to activate every two hours. After the first 25 days in a grace period, the user will be prompted to activate the product. If Office is not activated after 30 days agencies will merely be notified in a prominent manner to activate—no functionality will be reduced.

However, activating via a KMS server is not a one-time deal: on activation, a KMS-activated copy of Office enters a 180-day activated state. After entering this state, the product will attempt to renew the activation every seven days. Each successful activation resets the activated-state period at 180 days.

No Office servers, including Communications Server, Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, or Project Server, currently require activation.
