Are you on Insulin? Start Rotating, Keep Rotating! Many medications are used to manage diabetes, but the one that people hear most about is
insulin. Insulin helps manage type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Starting insulin does not mean that
you have failed to manage your diabetes properly! As diabetes is a progressive condition,
insulin may be needed over time.
Lipohypertrophy – KEEP IN MIND WHEN INJECTING!!
What is it? Hard, fatty lumps under the skin
How? Repeated injections of insulin into the same spot
Result? Increased use of insulin and crazy, erratic blood sugar control!
Prevention: You can prevent by rotating your site of injection and monitoring injection sites
for skin abnormalities such as puffiness, raised areas, redness, hard or lumpy areas – you can look with a mirror if it’s hard to see an area. Re-using needles can also cause lipohypertrophy so only use needles once, and dispose used in approved sharps container.
5 Injection STEPS to follow when using insulin/byetta/victoza:
1. Choose an area – abdomen, thighs, buttocks, or back of arm
2. Select Zone – about the size of a postcard, each zone can be used for up to 1 week
3. Select Site – remember that each new injection must be at least 1 finger width away from your last injection within the site selected
4. Move through zone in an order – you can remember to avoid injecting into the same spot
5. Move to the next zone and keep rotating!
These are 2 examples of injection zone
patterns, to help you move through safely!
Injection sites should be finger width
distance apart and never close to navel.

A reminder to our Diabetes Clan members:
It is important to know the numbers when it
comes to diabetes!
This month we want to emphasize on 4 important
numbers that pertain to diabetes management:
These are:
1. Fasting Blood Sugar (when you first
wake up): 4-7mmol/L
2. Post Meal Blood Sugar (2 hours
from eating food/beverage): 5-10mmol/L
3. Hemoglobin A1C tests (this test is
performed every 3 months for those not under control and every 6 months
for those under control): <7% or <8% for some individuals.
4. Cholesterol – less than 2.0 for LDL cholesterol
To find out more about how you can achieve targets for all 4 of the above, book an appointment with
Laura or Jessika. We would be happy to work with you and get your diabetes under control!
