As I prepare the last issue of the WAC on Track for 2012, I’m struck by just how quickly time flies! We are now on the countdown to Christmas and the “rutsch” into the New Year! In this issue we have the announcement of the wonderful WAC Christmas Party, where Santa will be on hand to receive the children’s wishes, as well as news of kids’ cooking classes, ladies’ night out, NOM-COM announcements, Christmas markets, and much more! It’s a big issue and I hope you will enjoy reading it!

President’s Note Carol Conzelmann

2012 is already drawing to a close, and it's great to be able to look back on a busy, rewarding and exciting year. Personally, we've been fighting our way through a kitchen renovation, enjoying some great family holidays, and observing with surprise how quickly our kids are growing up. I've once again had the pleasure and privilege of serving as President at the WAC. After nearly two years, I have become quite settled in my 'job' and when I step down at the end of March next year it will leave quite a gap in my life. However, I have plenty of ideas to fill up the spare time, and plan of course to still be around at the WAC, which remains very important to me and my family. It's time to move on - both for me and some of our other Board and Chairpersons. One of my last official jobs will be to head up the 2013 Nominations Committee (or Nom Com). Please have a look at the article later in this edition of the WOT and be prepared to be approached over the coming weeks, as we need talented, dedicated volunteers who are up for a challenge and you may just fit the bill! At this time of year it's a good moment to say a few thank yous. If you have chance, take a look at the WAC website www.wac.ch. Our very talented Office Manager Jen has been working hard to launch our new website, which not only looks fantastic, but is also much more exciting and interesting. Over time, it will become even better. Stephanie, our wonderful VP, worked very closely with Jen, providing her expertise and encouragement. Thank you both, it's great to see the online image of the WAC looking much more modern and user-friendly. Our Activities Board Member Heike has done an amazing job this year. Her role is huge and yet she has made it look effortless. The Halloween party was a great success, very well organised and lots of fun. Our Christmas party will be on December 9th at the WAC, and will feature many of the ever popular events such as a chance to meet Santa, as well as a few surprises. Please come along and get into the Christmas mood, the WAC way. Thank you Heike for making these two major events happen, and in such a short space of time. It's a huge achievement. All of the ladies (and one gentleman!) who fill our Board and Chairperson roles have done a wonderful job over the past year, and I am personally very grateful for the time, effort and energy you give to the WAC to make our little community function as well as it does. Thanks to each of you, and to your families for putting up with those 'WAC emergency' moments. I'm also very indebted to the support of my own family, as I'm writing this note my kids are entertaining themselves with an alarm clock in a dark room - they know Mom is busy with WAC stuff (again....). My husband Stefan also has to hear lots about my 'job' on a regular basis, as he frequently tells me it's more interesting than his - I do hope he's not just being polite! Finally, thank you to all of the many WAC members who have helped out in a myriad of small (and sometimes big) ways at the WAC over the past year. I'm a great believer that you get out of life what you put into it, so hopefully you've enjoyed helping out too, and getting to know some new people. It makes our Club the warm, welcoming place that it undoubtedly is. Merry Christmas to each and every member, and I hope you have a wonderful holiday and a 'good slide' (as the Swiss say) into the New Year. Carol

CHRISTMAS MARKETS 2012

There are so many beautiful aspects of Christmas in Switzerland, and for me one of the highlights is sipping a Glühwein and strolling through the lovely Weihnachtsmärkte! Several cities and towns host a Christmas Market, from Zürich’s main event in the HB featuring the stunning tree by Swarovski, or the very traditional market at Einsiedeln (seen below), to the very tiny and local village celebrations. Celebrating Hanukkah

On the 8th of December, Jewish people around the world will set out their menorahs and their Hanukkah candles and celebrate the “Festival of Lights.” If you don’t know Hanukkah, it is a celebration of a miracle that occurred in 165 BCE, where after a great battle in which the Macabees were victorious against the

Syrians, it was discovered there was only enough oil to light the lamps of the menorah in the Great Temple for one night. While men were sent to find more oil, the flames managed to stay lit for 8 nights. To celebrate, candles are lit for 8 nights and oily foods like donuts and potato pancakes are consumed, and dreidels are spun in a traditional game.

Recipe for Potato Latkes4 medium potatoes1 medium onion2 eggs1/2 cup matzoh meal (flour or bread crumbs can be substituted)1 tsp. baking powder1 tsp. each salt and black pepper (more or less to taste)vegetable oil

Shred the potatoes and onion into a large bowl. Press out all excess liquid. Add eggs and mix well. Add matzoh meal gradually while mixing until the batter is doughy, not too dry. (you may not need the whole amount, depending on how well you drained the veggies). Add the baking powder, salt and pepper and mix well. Don't worry if the batter turns a little orange; that will go away when it fries.

Heat about 1/2 inch of oil to medium-high heat. Form the batter into thin patties about the size of your palm. Fry batter in oil. Be patient: this takes time, and too much flipping will burn the outside without cooking the inside. Flip when the bottom is golden brown.

Place finished latkes on paper towels to drain. Eat hot with sour cream or applesauce.

If you'd like to try something a little different, add some bell peppers, parsley, carrots, celery, or other vegetables to the batter to make veggie latkes! You may need to add a third egg and some more matzah meal for this. For a zesty twist, add some diced jalepeño peppers to the batter! This should definitely be served with sour cream!

‘As a cooperative club, the WAC runs on the efforts of our members’

Do you remember reading this line when you filled out your WAC membership form? Although we do have paid employees at the WAC, their jobs focus on the school and on office administration. The rest of the WAC’s activities – playgroups, parties, social groups, courses, the library, the upkeep of common areas, our website and newsletter, to name but a few – are all the result of work done by unpaid WAC members. Without these volunteers, the WAC and our beloved Learning Tree Cooperative School could not function.

In March 2013, the current WAC Board and Chairpersons will change. Some of those serving are willing to continue for another year, but many volunteer jobs will become vacant. The new WAC Board will be voted in at our AGM on Thursday, March 21st, with voting taking place throughout March.

Have you volunteered at the WAC at all? Have you helped out in small ways, but are now willing to try out something new?

Volunteer work can be tremendously rewarding. Many of us are unable to take a paid job in Switzerland due to family commitments or because of a lack of suitable opportunities. By taking on a volunteer job, you have the chance to learn some new skills, and possibly brush up on some old ones. Working with a team, you learn how to work with others and step away from being a mom for a while. It can be a juggling act, but at the WAC we all have

busy lives. As a member of a volunteer team, you can expect help from other WAC members to help you find those few spare minutes (or hours!) to get things done.

The 2013 Nominations Committee has now been established and will be working hard to ensure that the WAC has a capable and talented team of volunteers to run our club in the year ahead. If one of us approaches you about a role, please don’t run away! Taking on a new challenge can be daunting, but we encourage you to think about how you can help out and what you might get out of it. There is always help and support on hand.

Equally, you might be interested, but we don’t yet know you personally. If you’d like to find out more, please don’t wait to be approached! We would be delighted to hear from you and tell you more about what roles are up for grabs – without obligation of course J

December already?!?!? Time flies by so fast!

As I write this, I am thinking of all the fun we had this year in school and all that we have to look forward to this month and in 2013.

Although we have a lot to look forward to, unfortunately, we have to say goodbye to those families who leave us at the end of the year. We will miss all the children leaving us and their families. We wish you all the best and are always happy to see you when you come back.

Fortunately, we have a lot of new families joining us. We are looking forward to meeting all the new families and their children coming in the new year. We hope you will enjoy being with us as we will enjoy having you.

I would like to take this special time to thank all the people who have been invaluable in their support. Thank you to my wonderful teaching team! Your hard work, dedication and loyalty is greatly appreciated.

I would like to thank all the others who have also supported us (the teachers and me) – Jen, Kristina, Carol and the board, the parents and of course, those delightful children that make it all worthwhile!!

I wish all of you and yours the best this Holiday Season and a great 2013!!

In November the Readers Gone WACky discussed Maggie Shipstead’s Seating Arrangements. The group generally

enjoyed this fresh novel about Winn Van Meter and his family as they spend a long wedding weekend at their New England Island vacation house. Winn’s insistence on proper behavior and focus on social status are continually thwarted as his house fills up with an assortment of guests. The action of the novel is within a three-day span, but in addition to many funny incidences there are flashbacks as well a number of interesting subplots.

Members found many of the characters unlikable, perhaps because most were immature, self-absorbed, social climbers. Although Winn was not emotionally connected to his wife and daughters, he constantly reflected on his feelings, which some members thought a bit unrealistic for a man.

We felt that the author’s narrative techniques such as many points of view and the father as main character, were risky. However, it was agreed that her style was refreshing and effective. The groups’ discussion also touched on the wedding traditions of different cultures, and members enjoyed sharing their own experiences.

All in all, the Readers Gone WACKy thought reading Seating Arrangements was an enjoyable read - like a fun romp through an upper crust wedding party.

The annual Holiday and White Elephant celebration, as well as discussion of David Balducci’s The Christmas Train, will be held on December 12. The tentative schedule of books and meetings for the New Year are:

Dear WAC Members,

After buying the 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy & finding out what it really is all about, I thought I should balance it out & get some good fun literature --- along the lines of Tolkien. So in December you’ll be seeing A Song of Ice & Fire Books 1-5. These award winning books were so good that HBO made them into a great period/fantasy drama called “Game of Thrones” (also available in the WAC Library). And for the children we have Goblin Secrets (recent winner of the 2012 US National Book Prize for Best Young Adult Fiction) which should be in the Library by mid-January.

New DVD’s for December:

1. Magic Mike --- Mike is a successful male stripper who falls in love. Can he quit his job for love? Based on the life experiences of actor, Channing Tatum (in 21 Jump St.), before he made it in Hollywood.

2. Rock of Ages ---Broadway Rock Musical brought to the silver screen. Enjoy hits from the 80’s as the story of 2 people who are trying to break into the rock business unfolds.

3. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen --- To improve Middle East – British relations & PR, the British government orders a fish expert (Ewan McGregor) to establish salmon fishing in Yemen.

4. New Year’s Eve --- The lives of some New Yorkers become intertwined on New Year’s Eve.

5. A Cat in Paris --- A cat lives a double life: cuddly kitty to a girl by day & cat burglar by night. When the little girl follows her cat one night, she ends up accidentally overhearing some Mafia’s plan. The criminals try to kidnap her & it is up to the cat & his night friend to save her.

6. Ice Age #4 --- newest Ice Age movie.

7. Brave --- Scottish Princess is tired of being protected, so she wanders off to seek adventure.

8. A Christmas Story --- Finnish version of how an orphan boy named “Nicholas” eventually became Santa Claus. Great film. (Note: Mature themes of loss at the beginning. Best for 8+)

9. Sharkwater --- Documentary about Sharks. Won lots of film awards.

10. Wonders of the Solar System --- another award winning documentary from BBC. Learn the latest about the sun & our solar system.

New Members’ BreakfastSue Mailley-Smith

“Making friends and meeting other Mums” is a reason to join the WAC that I read often on registration forms for new WAC members, so a good place to start this is with one of our regular New Members’ Breakfasts!

On 7th November, I hosted a Breakfast for a great group of new WAC members. We spent the morning getting to know one another (in other words, chatting about our children and how we’ve all found ourselves here in Switzerland!) and talking about what everyone is using the WAC for. It’s a different place for everyone; some using the Reading and Writing classes at the Learning Tree School, others enrolling little ones in the Pre-School and SwissGerman Spielgruppe, coming along to Playgroups, or for Ballet classes, amongst other reasons. Some of the new members have already taken on some great voluntary roles at the WAC, including Annie Forster, Louise Gooding and Bettina Ditzen-Powers who have kindly taken over the co-running of our Thursday Playgroup.

We took a tour around the building and caught the Pre-Schoolers having a great time in their Gross Motor Skills class (we all secretly wanted to join in when they were doing The Locomotion!), as well as checking out the Notice Board for other upcoming events. I made sure all our new members know how quickly they have to sign up for some of our most popular events, such as cooking classes for parents,

or movie nights for the kids!

Meeting new people is always good fun, and helping to make sure they can get the most out of our club is really important to me. It’s also a chance to ask for more volunteers at the WAC, no matter if the jobs are big or small. We’re very grateful to new member Monika Kopriwa who is going to help with the WAC on Track mailouts, and to Clare Taylor and Patricia Widmer who are doing a great job of the

important tasks of laundry and recycling – thank you!

There is always something that you can help with at the WAC; long term roles or perhaps at one of our special events. If you are looking for a way to get more involved, as a new or more ‘seasoned’ member, please get in touch!

I look forward to hosting another New Members’ Breakfast in the New Year.

I assume many of you love the snow. Many people ski, or are planning to ski, or are learning to ski, or will be sending someone (who perhaps has no choice) to lessons. A great Swiss website to have handy all year round is myswitzerland.com. But especially in winter, they have a page

dedicated to where you can compare ski pass prices for adults and kids at various resorts. Girls ClubJana Parkin

The girls were awarded with their new sashes to proudly display their badges that we have been hard at work on. I am excited about our new badge program. Each month the

girls will have a chance to work on a goal and earn a badge to proudly display. Don’t they look great!

Girls Club’s November activity was all about music. The girls got to share their favorite songs with each other. Among the top picks were Witch Doctor, A Whole New World, Gangnam Style, Have You Ever Seen The Rain, and Somebody That I Used to Know, just to name a few. Our girls have a wide range of taste when it comes to favorite music, but all were fun to sing along and dance to. Also all those girls who are learning a musical instrument graced us with a song. Instruments included the violin, guitar, and keyboard. We also began practising some Christmas carols for the WAC Christmas concert. Come see us perform on Sunday December 9th!
