Their artwork is called “Living Together” and consists of two canvases. The top canvas is of a sugar glider (WCS logo) in a tree with the night sky behind and has eleven stars to symbolise our Indigenous students in K-6. The bottom canvas is of three long neck turtles in a swamp, as the land our school is built on was swamp land and the long neck turtle were found in the area. The artwork depicts how land and water animals lived together on this earth in harmony together. This event has provided an opportunity for our Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal students to showcase their work about reconciliation to the Central Coast community and to visitors to

the Central Coast. It provides a practical and positive way to promote reconciliation within the whole community. A big congratulations and thank you to our students and staff members who made this possible. Attendance Friendly reminder regarding attendance. If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, it is your responsibility to either tell your child's teacher or the administration assistant at our school, or explain the reason by phone, email, or written note as soon as possible, or within seven days. If you would like to discuss any issues associated with student attendance please contact your child's class room teacher for the Primary and Year Advisor or the Head Teacher Welfare for secondary students. Uniform reminder: With the cold weather sneaking in the staff at WCS are noticing a few out of uniform jumpers coming to school. Year 10, 11 and 12 students only are able to wear plain black jumpers and pants to school with the junior years wearing blue jumpers and pants. Please be aware that although we do not expect all students to wear the WCS jumper it must be a plain blue jumper with no text or images. Tights and jeans are not acceptable. We have a great online ordering

system called FlexiSchools to make purchasing of uniforms easier for the school community. You can order from home or work. Primary School orders will be delivered to Primary student and High School orders can be picked up by the students from the High School Canteen. VET Sport Coaching excursion to the SCG and Football Stadium.

As part of their investigation of the Sport and Recreation industry, Year 11 and 12 students travelled by train to take the 90 minute guided SCG Tour Experience. It is a behind the scenes tour of the Sydney Cricket Ground and Football Stadium complex including such highlights as visiting the Australian Cricket Team's dressing rooms, the SCG Museum, the Member’s bar area (not in operation), the indoor cricket training facility and walking out onto the field at the SCG.

Another highlight included a tour of the Rugby League Museum at Rugby League Central where students saw all the major rugby league trophies and engaged with the memorabilia on display.

A number of celebrity sightings occurred and really made the students' day. All parties involved were very gracious and happy to pose for photographs with our students.

Premier’s Debating Challenge -

Primary

On Thursday 30 May, Claudia

Doeland (Y5), Chloe Wilson (Y5),

Leilani Handforth (Y6) and Tiarna

Jones (Y6) debated against the Year

6 Kanwal Public School Debaters in

their first debate this year.

The debate was ‘That Primary

school kids should be allowed to

use social networking sites.’

The Wadalba team debated the

NEGATIVE side of the debate and

gave some excellent reasons why

primary school students should not

being using social media such as

Facebook, Kik and Instagram.

Unfortunately, they did not win the

debate on the day but received

helpful feedback from the

adjudicator, Ms Donna Kendall.

Another group of students from

Stage 3 will be debating Jilliby

Public School in the next round of

the competition later this term.

Taronga Zoo Excursion

Last Wednesday many students from Kindergarten, Year One, and Year Two visited Taronga Zoo. We were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather and enjoyed investigating, exploring and learning even more about the animals and their environments. The teachers would like to say a big THANK YOU to the parents that

Central Coast Dance Festival

This year Wadalba Community School had five dance groups from K-12 that auditioned for the Central Coast Dance Festival. Due to the hard work of both the students and teachers all five groups were successful! Last Tuesday all our groups went to Laycock Street Theatre for our full dress rehearsals. Tickets are available for

our final performances through Laycock Street Theatre Box Office.

Roxanne Sanday Assistant Principal

Student Support Officer Term 2 has been a busy one. There have been several programs running in the school this term. Year 9 and 10 girls are currently participating in 'Girls with Purpose. This program aims to address relevant issues that girls are faced with by providing young women with an opportunity to develop their knowledge, resilience and self worth.

Also a group of Year 8 boys have been engaged in a group on a Friday to build a stronger connection at school. This offers a creative, practical and engaging way of teaching young people

attitude change, knowledge , practice and skill development that are essential for young people's cognitive and social skills. This term we have started a bootcamp after school on an Monday. This also has a component of nutrition. It encourages students to become more active and make healthier food choices.

In Term 3 there are two new programs starting. Drum Beats, which is an intervention program focusing on experiential learning through drumming. RYSS Regional Youth Services will run 'Full Circle' which will better equip young people with the skills to prevent/minimise bullying. If you would like further information on program for Term 3 and feel that your child would benefit from one, please contact Nicole Miller, Student Support Officer . Year 8 Academic Science class story writing competition

This term, the Year 8 academic science class has been learning about the systems of the body. The students had the opportunity to write a story about the digestive system using the heading "My Life as a Hamburger" Claire and Tallulah’s stories were perfect examples of the quality students we have in our academic class. Here is one of the winning stories. My Life As A Hamburger (Human Language is not translated by Tallulah Year 8) I am sorry to start this story off badly, but the title is completely misleading. Well...yes, I am a hamburger. And yes, I had a life but it isn’t about it! It is quite the opposite.

My name is Hammy and this is the story of how I died.

In the greasy kitchen of McDonalds, I was born (or as humans call it, made) inside a warm, cosy little oven. The heat from the walls bounced onto me. It made me feel toasty, my meat crackled, my cheese fizzed, my bun face getting browner and softer. I would have gladly stayed forever in the comfort of my oven when one of the walls opened. The cold air from the outside rushed in. I was petrified, frozen still. Who dared enter my oven without permission? But before I could fight back, a large thing snatched me up and took me away.

The creature I was faced with was terrifyingly ugly. Sweat dripping down its face, large crackly lips and pimples that looked like the pus from inside them would explode at any moment.

“Who are you?!” I commanded. “How dare you kidnap me?!”

“Jjewuejn. Rfufg eheruiccwiq.” The creature spat in my face. I could feel its revolting saliva on my face.

“Are you mocking me?” My tomato sauce boiled in rage. But before I could give it some butt-whooping, another foreign voice shouted:

“Herby! Igugttrtrjm! Uuddhnh da Hamburger feiwbueru!”

The creature who still had me in its sweaty palms rolled its eyes and threw me in a red paper box.

I tried to stop hyperventilating. The box was moving and making me feel sick. Whoa, Hammy. Calm down. You’ll get yourself out of this. My lettuce leaves told me. I began to relax until the box was tossed down onto a flat surface. The strange voices started up again.

A soft, adult voice was muffled because of the box as it spoke. “Snip de Hamburger, ejddee.” The roof of the box opened. Large green eyes as bright as the sun stared at me ravenously. The lips were licked, the nose sniffed in my scent. Was she going to...no, there couldn’t be any cannibals here. Suddenly, the creature’s hands attacked me, pulling and tearing me into halves. I screamed at the top of my lungs. The excruciating pain was so

unbearable. Tomato sauce oozed out of my torn sides. The mouth opened and the creature pulled me closer and closer to it. IT WAS GOING TO EAT ME! The mouth closed and I was left in darkness. Chomp. Chomp. Chomp. (to be cont.)

The Central Coast meets ERTH Imprints 2013 gives Central Coast artists the opportunity to work with one of the country’s leaders in contemporary arts. Art Central has revealed that internationally acclaimed theatrical innovators ERTH Visual and Physical Incorporated are partnering with Imprints 2013. Famous for their large scale unique theatrical experiences - including giant puppets, huge inflatables, aerial and flying creatures; ERTH will conduct a series of Master classes with selected Central Coast artists. The works created in the master classes will exhibit as a part of the Imprints 2013 live events which will be held at both Gosford and The Entrance in August 2013.

Most recently, ERTH’s ‘Murder’ reached critical acclaim at the 2013 Sydney Festival for its envisioning of a Nick Cave ballad using dancers and puppets.

“ERTH is a company that has placed great emphasis on the value of story and by bridging the gap between the arts and museums it is possible to create a shift in perspectives of the culture and history of places and communities. We will bring our array of skills, tricks and experiences to work with locals to produce a unique vision of the Central Coast Region” Said ERTH Visual & Physical Incorporated Artistic Director Scott Wright. “We are absolutely ecstatic“, notes Art Central Regional Community Creative Producer Liz Carter, “this partnership with ERTH will allow Imprints 2013 artists to optimise their projects with a series of professional development workshops from this specialised company.” ‘Imprints’ is a contemporary art project designed to create and exhibit new, innovative, thought provoking, interdisciplinary works that are responsive to the Central Coast Community. Now in its second year of production, Imprints is a project that continues to explore place and identity, defining the individuality that sets the Central Coast apart from Sydney and Newcastle. Interested artists are asked to attend an expression of interest information session at: Regional Development Australia

Central Coast. Located in the B.I building, Newcastle Uni (Ourimbah Campus); June 17 at 6:00PM. We are looking for visual, music, dance, theatre, performance, sculptors, story tellers, puppetry and culinary artists to apply for the professional development master classes as well as being involved with the installation and performance of Imprints 2013. Ms Sarah Barron IS YOUR CHILD SAFE? UNDERSTANDING BULLYING Bullying in Australian schools is a huge concern for teachers, parents and students. While schools are promoted as a safe place for children and anti-bullying policies are in place, there is a gap in linking parents and school professionals to work together in understanding and providing early intervention. This workshop will assist parents in

identifying bullying, the different

forms of bullying and what

proactive strategies can be

implemented. With appropriate

support and intervention, the

impact of bullying can be lessened

and children can feel safe at school.

PRIMARY NEWS

TERM 2 WEEK 5

LMG Sport The competition for Term 2 commenced two Fridays ago. The selected sports for this term are football (soccer) and AFL. There are two divisions; a junior division (Year 3 /4 students) and a senior division (Year 5/6 students). The teams are mixed with both boys and girls in each team. All the games are being played at the Hamlyn Terrace Sports’ Fields and students from the Sports’ Coaching Classes in the high school refereed the soccer matches.

Week 1 results Junior Soccer: 4 – 1 (Win) Senior Soccer: 4 – 0 (Win)

Unfortunately the wet weather prevented play last Friday. Leadership Conference Last Wednesday Mrs MacDonald and Mrs Davis (parent) accompanied eight Stage 3 students to a Primary Leadership Conference held in Newcastle. The students were involved in activities that focused on ‘being a leader’, ‘developing ideas to impact their school, ‘being a role model’ and ‘working in a team’. The students had the opportunity to interact with other students from a wide variety of schools. It is hoped that they will put into practice some of the things that were learnt on the day.

Peer Support Peer Support commenced recently. All students K - 6 participate for 30 minutes each Tuesday. Year 6 Peer leaders facilitate a small group of about 6 students who work together through a number of structured activities. Each teacher supervises 3-4 groups in their classroom. The module on which we are focusing this year is called ‘Keeping Friends’. The first session focussed on students getting to know the others in their group, agreeing on how they will work together and interact cooperatively with others. The next session looked at the qualities their friends may have and the concept that we choose friends based on the qualities we admire in them. In the third session students explored the concept of forming friendships with different people and identified that their friends can fall into the categories of ‘best friends’, ‘friends’ and ‘people we know’. Children also discussed the fact that friendships can change over time for various reasons. Please discuss at home with your child the different friends they have in their lives and how friendships may change. Some friends may be more important at different times in their lives.

Public Speaking This term, as part of the Talking / Listening program in English, each student will be asked to prepare and deliver a speech in their classroom. Those students judged to have presented the best speeches will represent the school at the zone finals later in the year.

Chess Competition This year Miss Green has reintroduced the Chess Club at Wadalba Primary. The team has been entered into the Junior Chess League Competition which involves playing matches against teams from local schools. To date the team has participated in three matches.
