Welcome to Wade Financial’s year in review, where we look back at the progress made by our supported charities, clubs and causes throughout 2015.

We have strengthened our relationships with some of the nation’s largest charities, most notably the NGS, Marie Curie and Macmillan. That said, we have also joined forces with a number of new causes, not least the football-based Lionsraw SA.

Likewise, we supported no fewer than four different sports clubs in the area, including West Allotment Celtic, Percy Park RFC and Whitley Bay & Tynemouth Hockey Club.

The arts also feature prominently in our sponsorship programme, with community amateur groups such as Linskill Theatre Group and the DMTC receiving our support.

We would like to wish all of our partners the very best for 2016, and implore our clients to get behind some of these worthwhile causes in the community.

THE NATIONALGARDENS SCHEMEServing as primary sponsors of the NGS North Eastfor the second consecutive year

THE NGS

In 2014, Wade Financial became the inaugural primary sponsors of the National Gardens Scheme in the North East.

The Scheme, or the NGS for short, sees gardening enthusiasts open their grounds to the general public in return for a charitable donation. Thus far, it has raised over £45 million for a number of excellent causes, not least Marie Curie Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support, but a number of local charities also stand to benefit from the garden openings.

The North East branch and their committed volunteers played a significant part in the NGS’s fundraising successes last year. Buoyed by the Scheme’s continuing growth in our region, we increased our sponsorship by 50%, and have been even more delighted with the results this time around.

In 2014, NGS North East surpassed their previous donation figures in County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, doing so by over 26% in the case of the latter two regions.

As 2015 draws to a close, they look set to repeat the feat for a second consecutive year,

More garden owners are taking part, too, with another twelve gardens added to the calendar in 2015. Beautiful gardens at Wall and Netherwitton, Belsay’s Bichfield Tower and Alnwick’s Ingram House were all new and welcome additions to the Northumberland calendar.

Towards Teesside, Moorsholm’s four cottage gardens and Congburn’s picturesque woodland are just two of the eight venues to be opened to the public this year.

We were in attendance at the tropical garden of Woodlands in Sunderland. 85 keen visitors helped to raise £820 on the day, with Debra Phillips winning £50 garden centre vouchers in Wade Financial’s free prize draw, presented by our very own Ian Little.

Greater participation equates to higher visitor numbers and, ultimately, more cash going towards worthwhile causes on a local and national scale.

In 2015, the National Gardens Scheme raised a staggering £500,000 for Macmillan, Marie Curie and Hospice UK, with £400,000 going to Carers Trust and a further £250,000 to the Queen’s Nursing Institute, amongst others.

The Scheme continues to grow year on year, and we hope to further cultivate our blossoming relationship in 2016.

Newcastle United W.F.C. were founded in 1989, and play every Sunday, with their home games staged on Coach Lane Campus at Sport Northumbria. They most recently won the Northern Combination WFL and the NFA Senior Cup in 2011/12.

“We are excited by this fantastic organisation that has given more than £26m to nursing, caring and gardening charities over the last 15 years. It has been a privilege to support such a successful and well respected charity for the second consecutive year.”

Stephen Conway, Managing Director

The National Gardens Scheme opens beautiful gardens to the general public, in return for a donation to one of its many charitable causes.

The Scheme has, since its inception in 1927, raised over £42.5 million for the likes of Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Hospice UK, Carers Trust and The Queen’s Nursing Institute, to name but a few.

MARIE CURIECANCER CARERaising thousands of pounds for the terminal illness support charity

MARIE CURIE

Over the past twelve months, Wade Financial’s Ian Little has raised a four-figure sum for Marie Curie Cancer Care, a charity that is particularly close to the financial planner’s heart.

The terminal illness support charity was there for a number of Ian’s clients, friends and family members, including his own mum. “She benefited hugely from the amazing and wonderful support of Marie Curie. The whole experience was extremely humbling,” says Ian.

Determined to raise funds to provide the best palliative care for others in their final days, Ian sought to raise money through a sponsored head shaving, as a show of support for those going through the chemotherapy process.

““Hair is such an important part of identity,” he says. “One client told

me that she was more apprehensive of losing her hair than undergoing a double mastectomy. That says it all for me.”

A rather apprehensive Ian underwent the most severe of trims at Terrys Hairdressers in Whitley Bay, raising £1,743 in the process - over three times the initial target.

It certainly left Ian a little chilly up top ahead of his sponsored trek of the Canadian Rockies in September, once again raising funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The nine-day expedition across the Atlantic involved five full days of trekking through some of Canada’s most scenic locations, including Banff National Park and Parker Ridge.

Marie Curie requested that participants raise a minimum of

£4,050 for the trip, but Ian insisted on paying for part of the expedition out of his own pocket.

“It was the opportunity to go and walk across the Rockies, which is a place I really love. Because it’s something that I really wanted to do, I didn’t think it was fair that anybody who contributed to this paid for my trip.

“The total cost was £4,250 with my registration fee, but I picked up the tab for the fee, as well as the £2,095 for the cost of my trip. As a result, every penny of the other donations went directly to the Marie Curie charity.”

Ian’s Canadian expedition ultimately brought in a further £1,588 for the charity, taking the total amount raised to £3,331 for the year - money that will go towards supporting patients and families in the Newcastle area.

“The support they offer is absolutely fantastic, and vital to so many people. They have been there for clients, friends and family members of mine, and continue to provide hands-on care and emotional support for tens of thousands of people.”

Ian Little, Financial Planner

Marie Curie Cancer Care was established in 1948, and continues to provide specialist care and support for the terminally ill and their families, completely free of charge.

The Newcastle hospice is one of nine nationwide, with the charity providing the largest number of hospice beds outside of the NHS. Donations allow the thousands of healthcare professionals to offer palliative care to those entering their final days, as well as guidance and emotional support.

MACMILLANCOFFEE MORNINGRaising additional funds for the cancer supportcharity via the medium of coffee and cake

MACMILLAN

This year, Wade Financial participated in the world’s biggest coffee morning, raising hundreds of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Our advisers and administrative team brought in all manner of baked sweets and treats to share amongst colleagues, friends and new faces alike, along with a brew of their choice.

Over 2.5 million people in the UK are living with the disease. This figure is projected to almost double by 2030. The help required is not strictly medical. Sufferers often need practical, emotional and financial support as they embark upon the daunting process of prognosis and treatment.

Macmillan Cancer Support are there for people affected by cancer. In addition to funding specialist healthcare professionals and establishing cancer care centres across the country, Macmillan offer comprehensive support and guidance to those in need, ranging from providing a friendly ear to arranging transport and specialist care from professional nurses and therapists.

“Macmillan are another charity that we are proud and eager to support in any way,” says Ian Little. “So many people have to go through harrowing experiences with this disease, and the incredibly compassionate nurses and staff at Macmillan make sure that they are not alone.”

“Donations allow this excellent charity to reach millions, so we were pleased to see plenty of clients enjoying some of our lovingly prepared cakes for a small donation. It was a great way to end the week, and it’s all for a fantastic cause.”

Ian Little, Financial Planner

Macmillan Cancer Support provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer.

They also looks at the social, emotional and practical impact cancer can have, aiming to improve the lives of those living with cancer in the UK.

LINSKILL THEATREGROUPSponsoring the North Shields community troupe’s productions of Rent and Sleeping Beauty

LINSKILL THEATRE

Having sponsored two productions in 2014, Wade Financial were thrilled to serve as main local sponsors of Linskill Theatre Group once again in 2015.

A rip-roaring production of Our House: The Musical, and a well-received, offbeat version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs last December set the bar high for Linskill’s dedicated troupe of volunteers, and we’re delighted to report that they went one better this year.

First up was their summer musical - arguably their greatest challenge yet. Rent: The Musical follows a group of struggling New York artists as they look to find love and inspiration amidst poverty and illness.

Featuring an ensemble cast of characters and a host of unforgettable musical numbers, including ‘Seasons of Love’, ‘La Vie Boheme’ and ‘Out

Tonight’, Rent is a heartfelt tale of romance, redemption and hope above all things under the looming shadow of HIV/AIDS.

A somewhat darker and more nuanced tale, the world-renowned musical drew large audiences to the Linskill Centre, and the Theatre Group’s diligent performers rose to the task, staging a powerful and thoroughly entertaining show across three successful evenings.

The Linskill Christmas pantomime is always well attended, and this year was no exception.

Last month, the Linskill Theatre Group staged their own production of Sleeping Beauty, the time-honoured tale of a beautiful princess who falls foul of her wicked fairy godmother, who, snubbed at the young girl’s christening, bestows upon her an evil

curse. Her coming of age, combined with the prick of her finger on a spinning wheel, will send the princess into eternal slumber.

This panto, a bombastic take on the classic Grimm Brothers tale, was performed by the enthusiastic volunteers at the North Shields-based troupe to sell-out audiences around the festive period. Led by director Dan Reed, Linskill Theatre entertained children and adults alike over four well-received evenings.

The Theatre Group are currently celebrating their sixth year in business, and we are proud to be part of their progress in 2015.

Linskill has a fledgling reputation as one of the region’s most committed amateur theatre groups, and we hope to be standing alongside them when the curtain is raised on 2016.

“Sleeping Beauty marked our fourth show as main sponsors, and we have never failed to be impressed by the hard work put in by all of the actors and stage hands. Every show offers something different, but is always entertaining and great value. Roll on 2016!”

Ian Little, Financial Planner

Based at the Linskill Centre in North Shields, Linskill Theatre Group comprises of eager amateur actors and volunteers from within the local community.

They stage two productions a year, often performing a musical in the summer and a traditional pantomime in the winter, both well-received by paying audiences.

DURHAM MUSICALTHEATRE COMPANYSponsoring the DMTC’s amateur production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard

DURHAM MTC

“Yes, this is Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California.”

So the famous opening monologue goes. Except it isn’t LA. It’s Millennium Place, County Durham, where the cast and crew at the Gala Theatre performed the musical version of Billy Wilder’s classic picture.

Amateur theatre was once more popular than its professional equivalent, but times have changed, according to Gala director Fred Wharton. “The amateurs were the ones that used to sell, but it’s getting harder and harder,” Fred laments.

There are several reasons why, but the main source of consternation is the rising cost of staging a show. Exorbitant licensing royalties for popular productions, coupled with the need to hire orchestras and costumes, sees the bills mount to worrying

levels. Without the government or local businesses to turn to for financial support, many amateur societies have fallen by the wayside. The DMTC is still going strong, at least in part down to those familial ties.

Shows at the Gala now require a 95% turnout just to break even - a figure which undoubtedly threatens the long-term existence of amateur theatre in the region, and the Gala in particular.

Wade Financial MD Steve Conway has long been an enthusiastic visitor at the Gala, and was keen to step in and help the theatre group ahead of their June performances of Sunset Boulevard.

“The shows they put on really are excellent, right up there at the higher end of the spectrum,” he says. “I took eight of my clients down to see A Funny Thing Happened On The Way

To The Forum, and they absolutely loved it. You can see how hard the cast and crew work to bring these productions to life, and they are doing it all within very fine margins. A number of my personal clients are involved with the group, either on the stage or in the wings, so I know just how hard the group works to put on their productions.”

Sunset Boulevard is based on the 1950 Billy Wilder film of the same name, and is narrated by Joe Gillis, a down on his luck screenwriter who chances upon Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent movie era. The deluded actress soon draws Joe into her world of fantasy, with profound consequences on both.

The award-winning musical, scored by Andrew Lloyd-Webber, earned rave reviews from theatregoers over its five-day run, proving that there’s plenty of life in amateur theatre yet.

“It is important that the arts remain accessible at a local level, especially at fantastic venues with talented performers like the Gala Theatre. In that respect, we are eager to assist the Durham Musical Theatre Company in any way possible.”

Stephen Conway, Managing Director

The centrepiece of Durham’s arts programme, the Gala is situated on the banks of the river Wear in central Durham.

It plays host to a number of theatre companies (including the DMTC), musicians and dance performers, as well as showing the latest blockbusters and independent films in its dedicated cinemas.

LIONSRAWSOUTH AFRICASupporting the football fan charity in one ofSouth Africa’s most impoverished communities

LIONSRAW SA

How much does it cost to provide a future for a child?

It’s a pertinent question, particularly in developing countries like South Africa. For the children of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, the 2010 World Cup offered optimism, as Durban-born footballers like Siboniso Gaxa stood toe to toe with Luis Suarez and Thierry Henry. For one month, their country became the world’s greatest stage.

Bafana Bafana were not the only ones bringing hope to the people of the valley. It was the football fans, hailing from far-flung corners of the world, who brought more than just a love of the beautiful game to the African continent. They weren’t just there to cheer from the sidelines; like the national side, they wanted to do the country proud.

The team’s name is Lionsraw.

Since 2004, the charity has been working hard to mobilise the vast numbers of supporters that travel to major football tournaments, combining matchday experiences with life-changing ones for the surrounding communities.

In the aforementioned valley, HIV remains rife, unemployment consistently high. The outlook for youngsters was undeniably bleak. But Lionsraw have worked with the community to build an orphanage, a constantly growing school and dedicated toilet and changing room facilities. The students, previously attending classes on empty stomachs, now receive two meals a day, including a nutrient-rich breakfast.

Which brings us back to our original question. How much does it cost to provide a future for a child? As little as 10p a day.

The latest Lionsraw project caught the attention of Wade Financial’s Ian Little, and both the financial director and the company have pledged their support to the cause.

In the summer of 2010, Lionsraw started work on the Steven Davison Primary School. By 2015, over 400 children between the ages of 4 and 13 eat breakfast there every morning, brush their teeth before class, and receive an education.

The school’s popularity continues to outstrip the size of its premises, and the charity head back to the valley in October 2015 to build three more classrooms.

Wade Financial have donated the construction funds for one of them, raising a four-figure sum and further awareness at the Wade Financial Sportsman’s Dinner.

“It’s a cracking charity full of passionate volunteers, and the work they undertake makes such a significant difference to so many young lives. In the sport’s current climate, groups like Lionsraw show there is so much good that can come from the beautiful game.”

Ian Little, Financial Planner

Lionsraw is a movement that mobilises passionate football fans who believe they can make a difference in the lives of others locally and globally.

As well as bringing football programmes to juniors across the world, they also seek to improve impoverished communities through construction work and education.

WEST ALLOTMENTCELTIC F.C.Our continued relationship with the Northern LeagueDivision One outfit

WEST ALLOTMENT

Wade Financial have long been associated with Whitley Park outfit West Allotment Celtic Football Club, one of North Tyneside’s aspiring and progressive sides.

West Allotment have a distinguished history stretching back almost a century, enjoying success in the Northern Amateur League in the fifties, and again in the Alliance throughout the eighties. Towards the end of the decade, successive championship wins ushered in an age of dominance that brought further silverware and promotion to the Northern League in 2005.

We were with West Allotment when they suffered the pain of relegation in 2011, but also experienced the joy of the ensuing resurgence under player-manager Paul Stoneman. Consolidation in 2012 was followed up with Ernest Armstrong Memorial

Cup victory in 2013, and a return to the Northern League’s top flight one year later as runners-up to North Shields. The 2014/15 season was one of consolidation, the club battling against the odds to secure their Division One status for another year, despite having one of the smallest playing budgets at their disposal.

2015/16 looked to be another hard season for the modest village club, with the majority of the playing squad and managerial staff moving on at the end of the previous campaign.

Fortunately, Jon McDonald and his backroom staff have brought in a host of talented young players like Sam Walton and Daniel Taggart to bolster the side, while some old Allotment favourites - including captain Ian Dunn, midfield maestro David Henderson and resolute centre-half Michael Hall - are all plying their

trade at Whitley Park once more. The new-look side has surpassed early expectations as dead certs for relegation, occupying 18th place at the turn of the year. With half of the season remaining, Allotment will hope that their promising, talented squad can stave off relegation for the second successive year.

Off the field, Allotment have taken significant steps towards establishing a junior development system, setting up an ‘A’ team in 2013, and under-13 and under-21 sides this year.

To assist with the day-to-day running of the club, Wade Financial held a Sportsmans Dinner, featuring incredible magician/comedian Chris Cross, as well as a unique talk-in with Newcastle United’s Steven Taylor. The two events raised well over four figures for Celtic, who will hope to kick on further in 2016.

“In our time associated with West Allotment Celtic, the club has gone from strength to strength, winning cups and earning promotion on one of the smallest budgets in the division. As one of the club’s main sponsors, we couldn’t be more proud of its progress.”

David Dodds, Financial Planner

Established in 1928, village club West Allotment Celtic has enjoyed its fair share of success in almost a century of existence, dominating the Alliance at the turn of the noughties.

The club is based at Whitley Park, Benton, and plys its trade in Division One of the Northern League.

NUWFC’SMICHAELA RAINESponsoring Newcastle United WFC goalkeeper Michaela Raine for the 2015/16 season

NUWFC

Wade Financial are delighted to sponsor Newcastle United WFC goalkeeper Michaela Raine for the 2015/16 season.

26-year-old Michaela has tended net for the Mags’ development team for four years, helping the side win the County Cup in 2012/13. The former Blyth Town stopper has made her first appearance for the first team this season, stepping off the bench in rather dramatic fashion against Blackburn Rovers.

“Basically, the ‘keeper got sent off, and I was on the bench,” the ‘keeper explains. “I came on, and got kicked in the head straight away! Laura Wareham had gone down injured a couple of minutes before that, and they told me to go and warm up.”

However, the number one received her marching orders as the game

headed towards stoppage time. “I sat back down, but when she got sent off, they said, ‘get ready, you’re going on’. I hadn’t even thought about the free kick. All I’d thought about was getting on the pitch. It was a really close game; it’s hard to go into that.” Nevertheless, Michaela made the all-important save moments after coming on, securing a 2-1 victory for NUWFC.

She may have made a memorable breakthrough in August, but Michaela is just keen to get more playing time under her belt. “I just want to play as many games as I can, really, whether it’s for the first team or the development. Maybe we can win the league with the development, and stay in the Women’s Premier League with the first team.”

Wade Financial are hoping to help Michaela achieve her goals, sponsoring the stopper for the

2015/16 campaign. “It benefits me greatly. Otherwise, I’d have to pay myself. With Wade Financial helping me out, I can train each week and it’s paid for, some costs go to transport, and it helps with the kit as well. It is nicer having a sponsor, too. It doesn’t look as good when it’s you paying for it yourself!”

Michaela’s talents became known to Wade Financial through financial planner David Dodds. David, a keen football coach who recently passed the first module of the FA Youth Award, runs Whitley Coast Soccer’s under-14s girl’s team, and was eager to get the goalkeeper involved.

“It’s great to have Michaela on board,” he says. “It’s a real bonus for the girls to have her coming along to training sessions, having chats with them and sharing her experiences. We hope she has a successful season with NUWFC.”

“With Wade Financial helping me out, I can train each week and it’s paid for, some costs go to transport, and it helps with the kit as well. It is nicer having a sponsor, too. It benefits me greatly, otherwise I’d have to pay myself.”

PERCY PARKRUGBY F.C.Backing Percy Park RFC, one of North Tyneside’s premier amateur rugby sides

PERCY PARK RFC

With five teams, a comprehensive junior setup and almost 150 years of experience and tradition, Percy Park is one of North Tyneside’s premier amateur rugby clubs. Wade Financial are delighted to have joined the scrum, lending its weight to another progressive club in the local community.

Founded in 1872, Percy Park has the distinction of being one of the oldest rugby clubs in the North East. The side has spent the majority of its 142 years playing on the pitches at Preston Avenue, home of Percy Park since 1896, and just a short walk from our offices on Howard Street.

Percy Park fostered a reputation as one of the region’s top amateur sides, playing the Barbarians on three occasions around the turn of the century and hosting the All Blacks for their game against Northumberland

in 1905. Over the years, players such as Tot Robinson, Carston Catcheside and Don Rutherford went on to win caps at international level, some representing the Red Rose and others taking part in British & Irish Lions tours.

The North Shields-based club have a rich history, but have been making great strides towards a prosperous future. The youth system, developed from 1986 onwards, introduces children as young as six to the sport, bringing them through the junior ranks via a structured and widely praised programme.

In addition to the three floodlit pitches and first-rate facilities, Percy Park also boasts a modern, stylish clubhouse on site, capable of accommodating up to 350 people, be it supporters on matchdays or guests at weddings, parties and corporate events.

Percy Park’s professionalism and forward thinking on and off the field that drew the attention of Wade Financial, who, as sponsors of West Allotment Celtic F.C. and Coast Soccer, were eager to get behind another thriving club in the area.

The financial planning firm is showing its support to the club via a pitchside hoarding at Preston Avenue and an advertisement in the matchday programme. Keith Atkinson, President of Percy Park RFC, is thrilled with the linkup.

“Percy Park RFC are delighted to team up with Wade Financial in giving young people of North Tyneside the opportunity and financial support to learn and play the game of rugby. Percy Park acknowledges that Wade Financial has a longstanding heritage in supporting local sport, and we are proud to have them as partners.”

“We’re thrilled to be serving as one of Percy Park RFC’s proud sponsors. We are always keen to support local clubs that have an impact on the community, and their focus on junior development from such a young age can only inspire more kids to get in the game.”

Ian Little, Financial Planner

Percy Park RFC’s first XV compete in North One East, and regularly compete on Saturday afternoons at 3pm (kick-off is pushed back to 2.15pm in the winter months).

After a good start to the season, the North Shields-based side will be confident putting together a string of positive results.

WB & T HOCKEY

WHITLEY BAY &TYNEMOUTH HOCKEY CLUBWade Financial renew their sponsorship of the North East’s premier field hockey club for 2015/16

Wade Financial are delighted to be once again be serving as main sponsors of Whitley Bay and Tynemouth Hockey Club for the 2015/16 season.

The club, which has roots dating back as far as 1902, was formed in its present state when the respective sides at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay were merged in 2007. “We had played mixed hockey together for many years and attended functions together, so the amalgamation seemed inevitable,” says Steve Troup, former Chairman and current Press Officer who, along with wife (and club President) Gillian, helped to bring the two teams under one banner.

There are currently four men’s sides and four women’s sides representing the club. Their Ladies 1s outfit compete in the Conference North of the Women’s Hockey League,

the second-highest division in the country, and also have two teams playing in the North League. Their male counterparts are also holding their own in the regional leagues, the Mens 1s in the Premier Division of the North Hockey Mens League, with another three teams fielded throughout the NHML’s divisions.

What appealed to Wade Financial in particular was the club’s unrelenting focus on junior development, with a burgeoning set of promising youngsters coming through the ranks.

One such graduate is tending net for the Mens 1s, and another two are playing for the Ladies 2s. All three are just sixteen years of age, and have recently trained at the Lilleshall National Sports & Conference Centre, one of the country’s leading centres for excellence. Their progress stands as a testament to their own potential,

as well as their development within the WB&T setup.

“The sponsorship that Wade Financial has given us will allow us to help the likes of these three juniors to achieve their ambitions within the sport,” says club Treasurer Lynne Dobison. “We intend to spend the sponsorship money on new junior equipment, such as balls and goalkeeping equipment.”

Former Chairman Steve was similarly delighted to be able to count on Wade’s backing, keen to continue developing a fruitful relationship between the local financial planners and the hockey club.

“Whitley Bay & Tynemouth Hockey Club see the youth of tomorrow being the strength for the future. In a similar way, Wade Financial is looking after the priorities of today in order to be able to have a secure future.”

“We’ve been very impressed by how Whitley Bay and Tynemouth have been operating, particularly in these past few months. We’re proud to support another fantastic local club, one which continues to provide building blocks for young futures.”

David Dodds, Financial Planner

Whitley Bay & Tynemouth Hockey Club features an extensive number of mens, womens and junior sides competing in various leagues. Its foundations date as far back as 1902, and the club has since emerged as Newcastle and the North East’s premier field hockey team.

MAJI SALAMA

PROVIDING CLEAN WATER FOR KENYASupporting Maji Salama, a NE-based charity working with communities in West Africa

How much water do you think you use on a day-to-day basis? Five litres? Ten, perhaps?

The UN have suggested that each person requires between twenty and fifty litres of clean water to fulfil the most basic of needs – drinking, cooking, cleaning. It’s something we all take for granted, as much here as anywhere in the Western world. In less developed countries, a clean water source is so often the difference between life and death, particularly when it is integral to livelihood as well as sustenance.

That’s certainly the case in Kenya, where decades of water scarcity has taken its toll, and urbanisation has rapidly outstripped resources and facilities. Two in five Kenyans cannot get hold of safe water supplies, and only one for every three is able to access improved sanitation. The

statistics make for concerning reading, but the reality is that people are succumbing to illness and disease every day.

There is, however, a solution. North East-based charity Maji Salama has been present in eastern Africa for over two years, working with local communities and organisations to treat contaminated water, potentially saving the lives of thousands of men, women and children in the region.

How do they do it? With an innovative but simple water filter, designed and manufactured here in the North East. The Aquafilter is portable, efficient and easy to use, requiring no external power or disposables. These filters have been put to great use in the last five years by a host of charities, not least the Red Cross, and Maji Salama is working to get them into communities across Kenya.

Wade Financial has recently been involved with another project on the continent, providing the requisite funds and support to construct a classroom for underpriveleged children in one of South Africa’s most poverty-stricken catchment areas, and were similarly keen on making a difference with the water purification charity.

“One of my clients and good friends is a trustee at Maji Salama, and when she relayed the information to me about child death rates from water-related diseases, I was horrified,” says Wade Financial’s Ian Little. “We are keen to get involved and change their lives and lifestyles in a positive way.”

To that end, we are providing the funds for an Aquafilter to be used within the community, institutions such as schools and clinics making the most of a clean, safe water supply.

“We work with individuals who have their wealth and their health, the freedom to make their own lifestyle choices. People living in Kenya are deprived of those options. There are no alternatives in many cases.”

Ian Little, Financial Planner

Wade Financial were given the opportunity to sponsor a dog show by new canine charity Take Away the Tears.

The show brought together families and pet lovers for a fun-filled afternoon at the Church Farm in Earsdon, offering prizes in a variety of fields, as well as a host of other demonstrations and activities to enjoy.

Behind all the family-friendly fun lies a serious motive for organising the event. Every year, tens of thousands of dogs are subject to abuse and neglect, left vulnerable to the harsh reality of a life in captivity or on the streets. It is these defenceless animals that Take

Away The Tears is aiming to help, rehabilitating and rehoming those who have suffered and continue to suffer, both locally and abroad.

The cause is championed by Sue Nuttall, co-owner of the newly-established charity. “I wanted to give such dogs a chance to be cared for and loved, regardless of how many years they have left,” Sue says. “We hope to help by offering support to find that special forever home, or providing financial assistance to give them a loving foster home or private kennels.”

Wade Financial were keen to help Sue and Take Away The Tears, pledging a

donation in support of the not-for-profit charity. “We’ve known Sue for a long time, and if there’s a person out there with more passion for dogs, we’ve yet to meet them!” says Ian Little. “Many of us in the office love our dogs, and we couldn’t help but be impressed by the charity’s commitment to unfortunate canines.”

The day raised over £700, all in aid of vulnerable dogs both at home and abroad. With plenty more events scheduled for the upcoming year, Sue and her team of volunteers will be looking to raise more money in aid of stricken and abandoned canines, and we look forward to supporting their progress in 2016.
