WADESTOWN SCHOOL
Community Newsletter No 8
Principal: Amanda Frater Website: www.wadestown.school.nz Thursday 20 May 2021
Kia ora koutou Wadestown School whānau,
Yesterday our Year 3-8 students participated in our annual Wadestown School Cross Country. This was my first
experience of this school event but once again, I came away deeply impressed with our students, staff and
parent community. This occasion was another demonstration of how well our school and community come
together to support our students.
Every student completed the cross-country race and in doing so, achieved a self-selected goal. I am certain that
each child pushed themselves to reach their ‘personal best’. And regardless of whether this meant coming first,
last or somewhere in between, everyone gave it their all.
Our Year 8 Leaders were outstanding in their leadership; many of whom were given their first school-wide
responsibility for the year. Their professionalism, respect and support of others demonstrated the strength of
our Year 8 students this year.
I observed not only the large smiles on the faces of our place winners as they stood on the podium, but also the
encouragement and sportsmanship that these students extended to one another.
Key to yesterday’s success was the Leadership and organisation of Cathrine Wilkinson. It was Cathrine’s
organisation and oversight of the event that ensured the day was the success that it was.
In the upcoming fortnight, there will be further opportunities for us to come together as a school and celebrate
what it means to be part of the Wadestown School whānau. Tomorrow the school will be awash in pink and the
following week, brings our beloved Wadestown School Book Week, which concludes with the PTA Fundraising
Event.
Ngā mihi,

Draft Strategic Plan Community Consultation - Phase 2 On Monday you were emailed a link to a google doc that provides you with an opportunity to feedback on the
Draft Strategic Plan. This is our final phase of Community Consultation. This Draft Strategic Plan was developed
from the feedback that was received in the first phase of Community and Staff Consultation.
The Draft Plan contains a new school vision and 4 associated values. It also contains 6 strategic goals that give
the school our strategic direction. Within the link, you will find a copy of the Draft Plan (included as a pdf). You
will need to open this document to be able to answer the survey. I encourage you to take some time to read
through the draft plan and to provide your thoughts and perspectives.
Thank you to those of you who have already answered this survey.
Whānau Meeting – Tonight 5.30 pm in the Rose St Staff Room Please join us this evening for tonight’s hui. As part of the hui, there will be an opportunity for whānau to
discuss in person the Draft Strategic Plan for 2021 - 2023; with a particular emphasis on our Māori students.
Kai will be provided, and we extend a warm welcome to all whānau.
PINK SHIRT DAY - FRIDAY 21 MAY 2021 (TOMORROW)
Tomorrow, staff and students are invited to come to school dressed in as much pink as they can source. This is
to acknowledge and support the work of the Mental Health foundation as they work to promote bully-free
schools and workplaces.
A sincere thank you to Cathrine Wilkinson, Robyn Grover and the 2021 Fundraising Team for making this event
possible. Spot prizes will be awarded to those students who are wearing the most pink! Please bring a gold coin
to support this worthwhile cause.
Karakia The following karakia is used by the Board, teachers and students. I have included it for families to practice at
home. Ask your child to teach you how to pronounce this if it is unknown to you:
Nature Garden The Nature Garden has now been completed and is open to students. It is a beautiful, quiet area of the school.
On duty the other day, I enjoyed watching the students climbing and exploring this latest play area.
A big thank you to Aspen Gardening for their work on this space.
Mother’s Day Competition I received some wonderful entries into our Mother’s Day Competition.
The Weld Street students took the lead on this competition and I am looking forward to celebrating with them
at their next Assembly in Week 5. At this assembly I will present the winning entry with a prize for them to enjoy
with their mother.
Here is what some of our students did for their Mothers on Mother’s Day.
Callum’s mother was treated to a special breakfast in bed that he based on a handwritten menu.
Breakfast was delivered on a wooden tray complete with a cup of tea, mango yoghurt, fresh fruit,
and a lovely piece of art.
Jude’s mother was given an attractive handmade fimo ring holder.
Sophia took her mother’s breakfast order and then presented her with homemade waffles and a
hot drink on a tray.
Harry presented his mother with a lovely, homemade bracelet.
Hudson sent me a photo that showed him doing the vacuuming on Mother’s Day.
Greta’s mother was treated to a throne because she is the Queen of their house.
Alexia and Sylvie created a beauty salon at their house and treated their mum to a lovely day of
pampering that included a foot massage and the girls doing her make-up.
Annabelle treated her mother to an ice cream sundae as part of their Mother’s Day family dinner.

Blue Dragon Book Fair at Ngaio Town Hall
Saturday 29 May 9am to 4pm AND Sunday 30 May 9am to 1pm.
You are invited to come and buy books, puzzles/games, DVDs and CDs. Children’s books are $1 each. Other books are $3 (and
$2 each, after the first five books purchased).
If you feel it's not long since we had our last book fair, in November, you'd be right. However, this is the time of year that
works well for a number of reasons, and last year was - please - just an aberration in that we had to postpone twice.
If you have books to donate, please be in touch. We are particularly happy to have more children’s books. All proceeds -
over $16,000 last year - will go to the Blue Dragon Children's Foundation, which helps to break the poverty cycle for Vietnam's
poorest children. This includes street kids, children with disabilities, children from rural families living in extreme poverty, and
victims of human trafficking and slavery.
