University 36 - Fraser Tech 15

After a slow start University came away with a convincing six

tries to three win over Fraser Tech at Mill Street.

The win pushes University back to the top of the table and

revenges their disappointing first round lost to Tech.

Tech made a strong start to the match, playing into a stiff

breeze in the first half, and deservedly opened the scoring when

halfback Troy Lobendahn dotted down in the seventh minute.

The next 20 minutes was evenly fought with University slowly

gaining better field position, using the wind to their advantage.

University finally crossed for their first try in the 31st minute

with hooker Steele Williams barging his way over.

The visitors then ran in two more well-worked tries before

halftime to wing Navi Sikivou and first five Chauncy Edwardson.

Fullback Te Raina Richards-Coxhead impressively converted

all three tries in the windy conditions to give University a 21-5

lead at halftime.

10 minutes into the second half University had their bonus

point when centre Glen Robertson crossed the line, before

replacement prop Tau Koloamatangi scored University’s fifth

with quarter of an hour left to play.

The match was drifting towards fulltime before a frantic final

few minutes saw three more tries between the two teams.

Tech, in a rare second half foray into the University 22, scored

a well-worked try to wing Jesse Rihari, but University responded

instantly with wing Brogan Connor snatching an intercept and

running 50 metres to score.

With time up on the clock a snipe from the base of the ruck saw

Lobendahn cross for his second and Tech’s third to complete

the scoring in the match.

Hamilton Marist 34 – Otorohanga 15

Hamilton Marist produced one of their best efforts of the

season to down Otorohanga at Marist Park and all but confirm a

top four spot.

Fullback Brad Hills had a strong game for the home side,

scoring two tries, while the competition’s leading point scorer,

first five Wharenui Hawera, added 19 points with a try, four

conversions and two penalties.

Otorohanga were in the match at the break, down 17-10,

before Marist pulled away. The visitor’s managed just one try in

each half to fullback James Hemara and prop Josh Ostern.

Hamilton Old Boys 22 – Melville 21

A last minute try to wing Declan O’Donnell saw Hamilton Old

Boys sneak a win over Melville at Fred Jones Park.

With a try in each half to flanker Dan Bowater and halfback

Seth Rose, Melville stormed into the lead with the wind behind

them in the second half but just couldn’t quite hang on.

Old Boys started well with first half tries from front rowers

Tyrone Te Ruruku and Jason Church, but looked to have let

their lead slip until the late O’Donnell try bailed them out.

Hautapu 62 - Te Rapa 3

Hautapu recorded an easy 10 try win over Te Rapa at

Memorial Park.

Halfback Ruan du Plooy and lock Sam Kilgour scored two tries

each as Hautapu jumped out to a 48-3 lead at halftime before

taking the foot off in the second half.

One of the highlights for the home fans was a rare club

appearance from Hautapu All Black Tawera Kerr-Barlow –

coming on at fullback for the second half.

Morrinsville Sports 25 - Te Awamutu Sports 20

Morrinsville Sports took out a closely fought contest between

the two country sides at Campbell Park.

The home side scored first half tries to prop Steve Lowe and

first five Sam McLeod before a late try from flanker Shaun Peek

sealed the win.

Te Awamutu’s two tries came from halfback Richard Judd and

wing Esera Esera, with the boot of first five Teti Tela keeping

them in touch, and it was only the late five-pointer from

Morrinsville that separated the sides.

University have jumped back into top spot after their win over Fraser Tech with Otorohanga going down to Hamilton Marist. Other teams with Round 16 wins were Hamilton Old Boys, Hautapu and Morrinsville Sports.
