As seen with CENTAINE, O’REILLY and PINS, it is a policy that has served us extremely well, so when we learnt of the international triple G1 winner PACO BOY’s availability in 2011, we jumped at the chance. The GREEN DESERT line sire fits ideally into our selection criteria. Following on from early two-year-old success, PACO BOY achieved a remarkable three-year-old season, only ever starting in quality black-print races. His seven outings at 3 resulted in five black-type wins and culminated with G1 glory in the G1 PRIx DE LA FORET. Renowned for his blistering turn of foot, he finished his racing career with three international G1 wins and the distinction of 8 group level victories.

Beyond his vital ability to quicken and compete at the highest level, he confirms our commitment to the future. We believe we have no future without the assurance of ownership. You, our customers, are entitled to feel confident of continuity.

Continuity it would seem is something we are pretty good at. In the WS brochure a decade ago, Garry wrote:

Waikato’s senior stallion Centaine has done it all, right through to passing the half century mark in stakes winners. His two-year-olds show their class from day one with maturity they carry their form through to the highest level, and lately his broodmare daughters have been continuing the G1 tradition.

Heading into the 2011/12 season, O’REILLY is certainly continuing CENTAINE’s great work. As things stand, O’REILLY counts 49 stakes winners and is set to become the 11th New Zealand based sire in history to hit the half century. His exceptional Vern and Margaret Trillo-bred daughter SHAMROCKER rewrote history this season as the first ever filly to win the G1 Australian Guineas and G1 Australian Derby double. What’s more, his broodmare daughters are playing their part too with G1 offspring already counted.

O’REILLY’s younger barnmate PINS is hot on his heels. PINS’ stakes winners tally is now 41 and where O’REILLY boasts 11 individual G1 winners, he’s right on his case with 9. PINS is the leading NZ-based producer of individual stakes winners across the globe in 2010/2011. During this time, he has been best championed by the freakish Pat and Jane Lowry-bred gelding AMBITIOUS DRAGON, who beat the best the world had to offer in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, after previous start HK-1 wins in the Hong Kong Derby and Classic Cup.

Our latest G1 sire SAvABEEL has truly excelled this season. In Australia, his classic crop is strongly distinguished by an 8.82% stakes winners-to-runners ratio; thanks to the deeds of G1 Queensland Oaks winner SCARLETT LADY, DO RA MI and KUDAKULARI.

Such international accomplishments are in keeping with a record breaking 2010/2011 season for New Zealanders and our breed. New Zealand thoroughbreds make up just 5.1% of the Australian racehorse population, but we have won over 30% of Australia’s G1 races. SO YOU THINK reached legendary status there and is now doing the same in Europe. NZ-raiders JIMMY CHOUx and SCARLETT LADY confirmed the quality of our local racing with G1 dominance in the Rosehill Guineas & Queensland Oaks, and SHAMROCKER would surely be unlucky if not crowned Australia’s Champion 3YO.

In Hong Kong, New Zealand has for the third consecutive year been their number 1 source for black-type winners. What’s more, international limelight shone brightly onto the calibre Hong Kong’s racing contingent, when the NZ-bred AMBITIOUS DRAGON shot away with the 2011 G1 QEII Cup.

This type of international dominance is a national achievement that is probably only second to the All Blacks in branding New Zealand.

At time of writing, New Zealand’s leading stallions had international seasonal earnings of close to $10 million each. PINS, followed by HIGH CHAPARRAL, ZABEEL and O’REILLY were locked in a fight to the line for The Centaine Award. With these results, it makes sense that there is a very real demand for our New Zealand bred horses.

Sprouting wings in the Flemington straight, the WS filly flew home from last, sweeping past G1 filly BRAZILIAN PULSE to take the prize by over 2 lengths.

Vern and Margaret Trillo have bred plenty of top horses, but with glamour O’REILLY filly SHAMROCKER they now have a history maker on their hands.

The Danny O’Brien-prepared 3YO created miles of smiles for owners Raffles Farm, Jeff Dimery & crew at Flemington, upstaging the boys in the G1 AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS.

They grew even bigger at Randwick, when their equine heroine raced into Australia’s history books as the first ever filly to land the G1 AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS – G1 AUSTRALIAN DERBY double.

THE HISTORY MAKER

Pat & Jane Lowry’s homebred PINS gelding AMBITIOUS DRAGON realised a lifelong dream for HK-based owner Johnson Lam with a slashing win in the HK-1 MERCEDES-BENZ HONG KONG DERBY.

If that wasn’t enough, the stellar 4YO rounded out a dream come true season in the HK-1 MERCEDES-BENZ HONG KONG CLASSIC CUP and against the best the world could offer in the G1 HKJC AUDEMARS PIGUET QUEEN ELIZABETH II CUP.

What’s more with seven wins this term, the Bruce Perry selected and Tony Millard trained superstar equalled Hong Kong’s record for most wins during a season.

The Trelawney Stud & Robert Anderson-bred colt ANTONIO LOMBARDO looks another star in the making for Peter & Kim McKay and Trevor Luke. The G1 performed PINS juvenile outclassed all in this term’s G3 Taranaki 2YO Classic & Listed Wellesley Stakes.

Three BLACK-TYPE winners you say… all in a weekend’s work for our PINS. The Feb extravaganza was kicked off by ICEPIN and ANTONIO LOMBARDO in NZ and was supremely rounded out the next day by AMBITIOUS DRAGON in the HK-1 Mercedes Benz Hong Kong Classic Cup.

It may seem impossible but Waikato’s late-great stallion CENTAINE is continuing to champion Waikato from above. This season he will be awarded the Champion NZ Broodmare Sire for the 5th time, thanks in no small part to Champion 3YO grandson, JIMMY CHOUx.

Celebrations go further still. THE CENTAINE AWARD is trumpeting the case of PINS and O’REILLY as NZ-based sires with sensational progeny earnings worldwide.

WHEN TRAVELLING FROM THE SOUTH ON SH1 at end of Tirau township turn right onto SH27 marked Coromandel Penninsula, 8kms from Matamata. Follow signs to Matamata, crossing SH29 at GAS service station. Follow through the township of Matamata, turn right into Broadway at the roundabout by Shell service station. Proceed through one roundabout, turning left at second roundabout into Tower Road. Waikato Stud is located 5kms on the left.

WHEN TRAVELLING FROM AUCKLAND head south on the motorway, SH1. After the Bombay Hills turn left off the motorway, following SH2, marked Tauranga. After 60kms SH2 turns left to Tauranga, instead continue straight ahead on SH27, marked Tirau. Travel 65kms to the village of Waharoa, 6kms before Matamata. There turn left at the Mobil service station into Mowbray Road. Travel to the end of this road, turn right into Tower Road, Centaine Farm entrance is 500m on right, Waikato Stud is located a further 2kms on the right.

WHEN TRAVELLING FROM HAMILTON OR CAMBRIDGE head south on SH1 through Cambridge. After 20kms turn left onto SH29 marked Tauranga. Travel 14kms and veer left at Mobil service station into Hopkins Road. Note, opposite the Mobil is the main entrance to WS Valleyfields. Follow through the township of Matamata, turn right into Broadway at the roundabout by Shell service station. Proceed through one roundabout, turning left at second roundabout into Tower Road. Waikato Stud is located 5kms on the left.
