23rd June 2016 - Week 8 Term 2 Friday Lunch Vegetable Soup with Bun $3 Sticky Lemon Slice $2 Thanks to Shaki & Hesta for making this weeks lunch! Wainui Bay / Taupo Pt. Trip I was sweating a bit when I postponed the Wainui trip last Tuesday and the day turned out perfect with flat seas and no wind. I was worried Thursday wouldn’t be as good. Luckily the weather gods were smiling on me and the day was great. Thanks to all of you who came to our rescue with cars so we didn’t have to ferry kids from the Wainui ford to the start of the track. I went out with Room 1 and was pleased to see the knowledge the children had picked up during the two previous trips has been retained. Each class visits a different area from the sandspit out to Taupo Pt, with each area having its own unique characteristics. The trip involves some pre trip teaching ,the trip, followed by post trip teaching. This ensures that learning is maximized and it’s not just a fun day in the sun. The role of our local DOC staff, Project Janszoon staff, teachers and parents in passing on knowledge is invaluable. If you haven’t been out that way for a while, go for a wander with your child and let them tell you what they know. School Reports /Interviews School reports will be sent home tomorrow. There will be a slip inside for booking an interview time between 2.00pm and 6.30pm next Tuesday 28 th June and Wednesday 29 th June. Alternatively you can ring Jane to book a time or call into the office.

Wainui Bay / Taupo Pt. Trip

I was sweating a bit when I postponed the Wainui trip last Tuesday and the day turned out perfect with flat seas and no wind. The Tornado By Louis

I was at school. I was playing in the playground. I was the only person at school. It was strange but I forgot to check the T.V. weather. It said there was going to be a tornado. I heard something strange. I didn’t know what it was. The wind got stronger and stronger and strooooooonnnnnnnggggeeeeerr. Before I knew it my feet were off the ground. I was fully off the ground. Two seconds later all I could feel was twisting wind. I nearly died. Mini tornadoes came out of the bigger tornado. There were millions of them but it wasn’t really real, it was a dream! I woke up, BUT the same thing happened to me in real life!!!

Room Four Writing from Wainui Bay Trip We enjoyed looking on our new class TV at all the photos of our trip to our special place in Wainui Bay. We chose a few to write about. We brainstormed ideas and put them together as class poems. We tried to think of ways to remember the names of several plants and put these ideas into our poems. Onga Onga (Native Nettle) Beware, take care, Shiny, triangular, like a taniwha’s tooth Very spiky, like burning scales Nasty nettle, nestling in the ditch. Hiding, to catch you unawares, Treacherous, dangerous, Like poison ivy, As hot as lava, Hot, red hot, on unsuspecting skin!! Tutu Beware, handle with care, Small leaf, but deadly, As deadly as a poisonous snake’s venom, Deadly enough to kill an elephant Tutu, too, too poisonous to touch!! Kawa kawa Dewy, shiny, emerald green, Heart shaped leaf, Caterpillar holes in some, Just pick the holey leaves, They give strongest protection, Tooth ache curing Kawa Kawa!! Whau Seedpod Brown, ball-like, Thorny, almost hairy, Pointy as a knife, As prickly as a kina!! Sandy Tracks Follow the mysterious tracks, Who walked here by the taniwha’s lair? Leaving a secret, sandy trail? Friend or foe? Predator or prey? Tiny, puffy, pawprints, Pitter patter, Making me shiver. Who walked here? Don’t you know the taniwha’s lair is here??

Taniwha’s Cave Creepy, mysterious, magical, Deep, dark, penguin shelter, Pitch black, narrow, musty, Never ending, carrying on forever, Darker and darker by the second, Cavern crouching under the cliff, Enter for a scare, Trespass if you dare! Don’t make a sound when the taniwha’s around! You might just wake him up!!

Kids for Kids Concert

We have entered a large choir from Room 1, 4 and 5 in the Kids for Kids Nelson concert, where we will perform with several other schools. The show will be on 15th August at the Hope Community Centre. We have been involved in these concerts for many years with most children attending two of them in their time at our school. The show host for this year is Nathan King, a New Zealand musician, singer and songwriter. Some may remember Nathan as lead singer in the bad Zed. We have 16 songs to learn before the concert so the classes involved are holding daily practices as well as regular whole group practices led by Bridget.

BOT News We held our second meeting with the new Board last night. Nick Farr, who will be taking over from me next term came along to meet the Board. Jude presented a curriculum report based on how those children who were below the National Standards at the end of 2015 were tracking. The Board aren’t given the names of children just numbers involved. Individuals will be able to track how their children are going with the reports due out tomorrow followed up by the parent teacher interview discussion. Clarissa, Anel and Nina will attend the School Trustees Conference in Wellington during the school holidays. It will be an opportunity to attend a number of workshops designed to help Board members understand their role and to see how things are done in other schools. We are looking forward to them bringing back lots good ideas. We are going to get a concrete path put in alongside the deck, which will save a lot of mud being tracked throughout the school. We plan to have a working bee at some stage to do the prep work then hire a contractor to lay the concrete. More info on this will come out later.

Breakfast Quiz Champions

Congratulations to our Breakfast Quiz team of Phoebe, Kate, Iris and Charlie, who won the Golden Bay Schools Breakfast Quiz held at the Town library today. It was a pretty excited team who arrived to share their news with us. To prepare for the quiz the team had read a number of selected books from which some of the questions were to be taken from.

“We were up against teams from Central, Takaka and Collingwood and we were pretty nervous . Doris had organised an awesome breakfast before we started which was really special. We started off the quiz poorly but slowly picked up. We managed to get all ten questions right in our double point round which got us right up there. At the end we were tied with Central so we went into a “Death Round”. We answered the first question correct and so did they. On the third question we got it correct but they missed their one, which gave us the win and the Liz Batten trophy. We all contributed and worked really well as a team. It was nerve racking but exciting.” Phoebe, Kate, Iris & Charlie

Player of the Day

Congratulations to the children who got player of the day at Rugby on Saturday. Kaice plays for the Under 6 Br0die Plays for the Under 8 Luke plays for the Under 6 Team and Ryder plays for the Under 6’s and was POD last week.

Aliana and Maren got player of the day at Netball on Saturday and Caitlin got Player of the day the week before.

Last Saturday Jude and I went to watch the netball girls play each other and we were really impressed with the progress they have made so far this year. We also managed to catch up with the junior rugby teams at the Showgrounds as well. It was great to see so many of our children playing. This Saturday we hope to see our footballers and hockey players in action, weather permitting.

NETBALL NEWS Last Saturday we played at the high school court. The two Motupipi teams played against each other in a tough match, resulting in a draw 2 all. Player of the day for one team was Maren, who had a great game at goal defence. The Player of the Day for the other team was Aliana, who also had a fantastic game at Goal Keep. Well done girls!

MINIBALL Thanks to those who sent their miniball notices back. We will be entering two teams in the Year 3/4 grade and two in the Year 5/6 grade. The teams have been been sorted so that those in outlying areas are in the same teams to help with car pooling.

RIPPA RUGBY The Nelson Regional Rippa Rugby finals, which were to be held this Tuesday at Henley School in Richmond, were postponed until next Thursday 30 June, due to weather and ground conditions.
