Park in Wainuiomata is set to commence within two weeks, says Hutt City Council councillor Campbell Barry.

The local rugby ground will have a new drainage system installed that will improve the playing surface and bring it to a standard to that of a premier club’s home ground.

Originally the upgrade had been sched-uled to begin before Christmas but work was put on hold so the Wainuiomata Rugby Club could host the Piri Weepu Seven’s in December.

“It’s all go,” Mr Millar says.“We’re currently organising contractors

with work set to begin over the next couple of weeks.

“People want to watch entertaining, running rugby and this upgrade is going to improve the ground immensely which will be good,” he says.

will be completed by March in time for the start of the rugby season.

Mr Barry says sport plays a huge part in our community.

“I have no doubt that our sporting clubs are one of the biggest assets we have here in Wainuiomata.

“The running down of many of our public sporting grounds and facilities has not helped this in recent times,” he says.

“This is the least we as a council can do for these clubs that give back so much to our com-munity in return,” he says.

Members of the Wainuiomata club hope the upgrade will take the ground back to its glory days.

Mr Millar says the aim is to have a fi eld that can support more than eight hours of rugby a weekend and allow teams to use it more during the week for training.

A second stage of drainage is also planned, however, will require additional funding which Mr Millar says is likely to be applied over the coming year.

An estimated extra funding of $40,000-$50,000 will see the club ground rated in a similar category to premiership clubs.

The drainage system will see pipes installed under the fi eld. Pipes will connect to a main outlet which will deposit excess water from the surface of William Jones Park to Black Creek.

students were some of the first to jump online and check their National Certifi cate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) results after they were released last Wednesday.

Across the New Zealand, more than 100,000 students sat exams over four weeks in November and early Decem-ber.

Wainuiomata High School student, and 2014 head boy, Callum Mackaness completed his level two exams last year and will soon begin studying towards level three.

“I’m happy with my results... I passed,” Callum says. “I took it a bit easier the previous year, but buckled down and did my best last year.”

Callum tells the Wainuiomata News his best mark was an English essay he wrote and is looking forward to this year’s school year.

The young student’s goal for 2014 is to achieve his level three NCEA qualifi ca-tion with as many merit and excellence credits as possible.

“My parents were very happy for me

that I passed,” he says.Last year Callum took biology, phys-

ics, statistics, English, physical educa-tion and sports studies, however is unsure on his subjects this year as he needs to alter a few of his choices.

Callum believes his hard work is paying off and feels a great sense of personal satisfaction and achievement from his results.

Throughout the year students must achieve a certain number of credits to gain an NCEA certifi cate and principal Martin Isberg believes students that sat NCEA last year put a lot of effort in to achieving the best results.

The NCEA certificate comprises of three levels – level one, two and three – and only students in year 11-13 sit exams.

Wainuiomata High School is a co-educational state secondary school with a roll of 860.

In previous years students have faced problems accessing marks due to overloads, however this year, New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) deputy chief executive Richard Thornton says the release of results has

been successful with no issues reported.Students can log in and view their results

via the NZQA website and records of achievement can be ordered. Students have until February 21 to apply for reviews and reconsiderations of their NCEA results.

Unilever Australasia chairman Clive Sti� announced late last year that the company’s Petone detergent factory would close by the end of 2015, with the loss of 58 jobs. side of Wainuiomata Hill have lobbied for an over bridge to be built, decreasing the danger associated with crossing at the summit.

A proposed bridge would see Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata paths, that currently fi nish on either side of the road, connect at the top and cross the 80km/h stretch of road.

Hutt City Council mayor Ray Wallace says while a bridge is a priority it will not happen without New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) support.

The project is set to cost an estimated $800,000 to complete, with the aim of NZTA paying 58 per cent of the build and council paying the remainder.

“Hutt City Council’s money is already there and waiting for NZTA funding,” Mr Wallace says.

Wainuiomata resident Natasha Baker says the bridge idea has been in the air for quite some time but nothing seems to eventuate.

“I am defi nitely all for a bridge to be built up the summit of Wainuiomata Hill. Maybe if there was a bridge, I might actually walk up there just to be able to cross the road safely,” Ms Baker says.

“So many people do walk up the hill and many cross over. I am always worried that people walking or biking, that are trying to cross over, will be hit by a speeding car that is coming up too fast and won’t have time to slow down,” she says.

Mr Wallace tells the Wainuiomata News that he is hopeful funds will be fi nalised within the

next 18 months.“Why should the ratepayers have to fund

the entire project when many projects in Auckland are taxpayer funded...The bridge project meets the criteria in every way and has a high benefi t cost ratio,” Mr Wallace says.

“We must keep this as an important project which means come ‘annual plan time,’ Wainuiomata residents must put in a submission supporting the bridge,” he says.

ward representative, Campbell Barry says there have been a number of accidents on the road in recent years, making it one of the most dangerous in the city.

“There is a huge need for the bridge given the amount of walkers and bike riders who use the hill and cross at the top. It really is an accident waiting to happen,” Mr Barry says.

“It is not a waste of time. It is a crucial project for the future growth of Wainuio-mata,” Mr Wallace says.

garden is a muddy mess following Monday’s 6.2 earthquake that hit the Wairarapa Coast and Manawatu area.

The Wellington Anniversary Day quake, which struck around 4pm, was centred about 15 kilometres east of Eketahuna at a depth of about 33km.

Glenn and Michelle Smith, Totara St residents, were unsure if there was any other reported damage in Wai-nuiomata but tells the Wainuiomata News the earthquake caused a water pipe to burst on their property.

Mrs Smith says water was switched off at the family’s home between the

time of 6pm and 11pm, with contrac-tors leaving the site shortly before midnight.

“[We] now have a lovely mud pile, but were super impressed with [contractors] as they were out fairly quickly and worked the entire time,” she says.

Hutt City Council Mayor Ray Wal-lace urges residents around the Hutt Valley and Wainuiomata areas to make sure they are prepared follow-ing the recent earthquake.

GeoNet received about 8000 reports from the public that felt the quake on Monday, with a number of reports of damage.

Hutt Valley Police are urging residents to be mindful about valuables inside their homes after a series of thefts.A thief has been reportedly taking advantage of the elderly people enjoying the summertime in their gardens and stealing from their unlocked homes.A number of reports relating to wallets, handbags and jewellery being snatched have been received by Hutt Valley Police.Police are seeking information from victims of thefts and who may have seen a man driving a Subaru station wagon in the Hutt area.Contact your local station or leave an anonymous tip with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you have any information.

Residents to be mindful after thefts

palled by recent criminal activity that saw tyres on eight vehicles slashed.

The unlawful damage alleg-edly took place over the transition period between 2013 and 2014. Vehicles vandalised were located on a number of streets and roads surrounding the rugby club and Homedale areas.

Sergeant Bradley Allen, of the Wainuiomata Police Station, says because the incidents were isolated there was no evidence linking the crime to offenders.

Police believe it may have been youths who had been at a party in the area.

“Reports have been fi led and police investigations will con-tinue,” Mr Allen says.

There are no suspects and no charges have been made, he says.

Peter Cox, a resident on Hyde St, was one of the unfortunate victims who woke to find his

tyres on his vehicle slashed.“It’s just not on,” Mr Cox says. “It was ok for me, it was the

work vehicle. I feel for the poor people that only have one car and had no way of getting anywhere,” he says.

Wainuiomata Police have been working with local neighbour-hood support groups over the past few weeks to improve public awareness about the crime.

Anyone with information about the tyre slashing offence should contact Sergeant Allen at the Wainuiomata Police Station on 439 0500.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Other reports of damage came from vehicle owners in Hyde St, Hine Rd and Best St.

in Wainuiomata it seems they go and struggle to be replaced.

Currently there are about fi ve empty lo-cations in and around the Wainuiomata Shopping Centre area awaiting tenants, and mall spokesman David Tompkins says the need to support and encourage locals to open businesses in Wainuio-mata is important.

The shopping centre has more than 20 stores including The Warehouse, Countdown, Amcal Pharmacy and McDonalds.

Wainuiomata Community Board deputy chairman Terry Stallworth says it is not just a problem in the Wainuiomata, there are shops vacant across the whole region, including Lower Hutt.

“Our long term goal is to get people to shop on this side of the hill,” Mr Stallworth says.

business people. “It’s just a matter of getting the right type of

shops that residents want,” he says.In 2012, the Wainuiomata New World closed

its doors and saw a number of businesses follow shortly after. Shops have also closed in the past few days.

According to surveys conducted by various groups in the community, residents would like to see more clothing retail open in the mall as well as a movie theatre.

Management are always working on getting new businesses to open up in the mall and are confi dent business opportunities are there, Mr Tompkins tells the Wainuiomata News.

Mr Stallworth says a lot of people have no transport, which means getting to places like Lower Hutt for shopping can create more costs even before they have started shopping.

“I know people want to stay and shop locally. We just need to work on getting the right mix of shops,” he says.

The shopping centre was built in 1970.

“Our long term goal is to get people to shop on this side of the hill.”

havoc across the capital the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade was run off its feet with call outs, prompting many locals to call them the heroes of the storm.

The fi re fi ghters responded to 36 callouts over the storm period, the worst being a house fi re.

has got the go ahead after fi nding out they would receive funding last week.

The competition which aims to keep graffi ti off the streets will be funded by the Creative Community Scheme.

Organiser and Tubby’s Tyres manager Lee Harper says they are “over the moon” to have received funding.

Graffi ti artists from around Wainuiomata will have the chance to show off their skills at the fi rst Wainui Graff Off later this month. The message behind the competi-tion is- think before you ink.

The Wellesley Boutique Hotel head chef won with his twice- baked roast pumpkin and cheddar souffl é with winter vegetable salad and walnut soil.

Judges noted that there were “lots of good techni-cal skills with the souffl é, and that the beetroot gel and walnut soil made for a very seasonal vegetable salad”.

A Wainuiomata man says illegal dumping on his road is killing his animals.

Electronics engineer Steven Tetlow says some-one is illegally dumping grass, plastic and other items outside his property on Upper Fizherbert Road which his animals can then eat through the fence.

A boot camp designed for start-up businesses will be run over four weeks at the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce next month.

Supporting entrepreneurs in Wainuiomata and Hutt Valley is set to help develop company ideas and explore whether there is the potential to succeed.

The programme, which begins on February 11, was developed and supported by the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce, Hutt City Council and ANZ.

Chamber of Commerce chief executive Mark Futter says: “[Companies] will face tough questions and receive

guidance on developing busi-ness plans to provide a sound base for building a business.”

There is space for 30 busi-nesses to register and up to six businesses will qualify for support packages as part of the programme.

Hutt CBD development manager Cyndi Christensen says participants are provided with the tools to be success-ful.

“We are keen to support people who have a strong desire to develop their own business.

“They will contribute to our future prosperity as a city, create employment, and support growth,” she says.

Boot camp for start-up businesses

Children have been putting their little fi ngers to work these holidays building 3D robots out of recycled materials.

Library manager Annie Reilly says the library has been a hive of activity with children of all ages creating their own robots.

Ms Reilly told the Wainuiomata News the robot factory - Wainuiomata Library – has been a resounding success as a holiday activity, with lots of mums and dads also getting involved.

A number of robots have stayed at the library, while others have had their photo taken and are displayed inside.

Children, as well as mum and dad, are also invited to attend today’s ‘robot talk’ afternoon where real robots running amuck.

“There will be an opportunity to con-struct your own lego robot and watch it move,” Ms Reilly says.

The afternoon is recommended for children over eight and begins at 2pm.

Younger children can still make their own robot constructions in the robot factory.

Hutt Safe City and Neighbour-hood Support New Zealand will launch the neighbour award campaign for 2014 this Friday and Wainuiomata Neighbour-hood Support spokeswoman Dawn McKinley wants resi-dents will get involved.

Ms McKinley told the Wai-nuiomata News the award gives residents an opportunity to nominate their neighbours for good deeds.

“There are so many un-sung heroes, people who go unrec-ognised for all the wonderful things they do in their com-munity,” Ms McKinley says.

“This is a way of publicly

recognising these good sorts. Also by raising the profi le of Neighbourhood Support it helps to foster a sense of community and assists our more vulnerable members of the community,” she says.

The Wainuiomata Neighbour-hood Support group will be setting up voting boxes in the Library, Community Centre and the Mall for residents to vote.

“Our aim is to reduce crime and/or injury and by promot-ing community spirit; it makes our neighbourhood a safer and more caring place to live,” Ms McKinley says.

The closing date for voting is March 14.

A suspicious fi re broke out at the neglected Hutt Valley Memorial Tech College on Monday evening.

The school in Petone has been plagued by arsonists in recent years, repeatedly targeting the building trying to burn it down.

Smoke from the fi re was seen from around the Wellington region.

Fifteen fire engines were called out. The fi re is reported to have started at about 7:40pm.

Dear Ed,Quite frankly I am

shocked. It seems that the world we are living in is turning the last remnants of traditional family val-ues into activities for the benefi t of the commercial world.

Every year commercial Christmas propaganda is thrown at us earlier and earlier, and with such quantity that it detracts from the true meaning of Christmas.

Having just recovered from this propaganda overload, I walked into

my local supermarket to fi nd that Hot Cross Buns and Easter Eggs are on sale, already, three months early! Heck, why not start selling Christmas mince pies now too.

What is important to remember through all of this commercialisation of traditional holidays is that of the true values, mean-ings and reasons of these holidays; ones of joy, hope, family and community.

Members of the commu-nity have the chance to walk around the old Wainuiomata and Orongorongo catch-ment areas this weekend as part of a Greater Wellington Regional Council guided tour.

Residents will be taken around the lush native for-ests and clear rivers of the catchment areas that were recognised early on in their existence as a water supply potential.

History of the area dates back to 1880 when an earth dam was constructed and a pipeline laid to Wellington.

Since then a number of developments have taken place, including the con-struction of the Morton Dam in 1912 and a new state-of-the-art treatment plant was built 1993.

If interested, residents are urged to bring a backpack, rain jacket and warm cloth-ing. Tramping boots are recommended and each person is to bring their own food and drink.

Dear Ed, I fi rst chuckled to my-

self when I read that the Wainuiomata Community Board will be posting vid-eo blogs of their meetings on YouTube, but then I realised what a great idea it actaully is.

It’s about t ime the residents of Wainui actu-ally became involved in the wider issues of our community, and this is a perfect opportunity to be aware of things that need change.

By watching the meet-

ings online we can take an active role in making Wainuiomata better.

It’s not fair of us to com-plain about where we live and what needs changing, then not lift a fi nger to help the councillors out with the change.

Now, I know there are some wonderful families, people, and businesses in Wainui who already do so much for this community, and I’m not taking a stab at them.

I just think this is a good opportunity for the rest of

the community (includ-ing myself) to step up and make something of Wainui.

It’s about time we all got on to YouTube and spent time loking at how to make our region better, instead of wasting time watching stupid videos.

Council ‘vlogs’ a great step forward

A purpose-built gallery is set to open in the Petone community this week and the artist behind it hopes it will support the local art community.

The Alfred Memelink Artspace, located on the Petone Esplanade, will be open to the public this Saturday.

Petone artist Alfred Memelink says the Esplanade has huge potential and Petone is just calling out for galleries.

“I want to bring original local art and prints, as well as craft items, to our commu-nity in a friendly, seaside setting. Everyone should be able to identify with and enjoy the art of the Wellington region,” he says.

Mr Memelink will also work from and exhibit at the new gallery.

The new purpose built gallery and studio was built where the old Esplanade dairy was located. It will have regularly changing exhibitions featuring the different areas of Wellington.

A number of Wellington-based artists will be joining the Petone artist for the opening exhibition, Petone by the Sea.

Wainuiomata Police were relatively quiet over De-cember receiving a limited number of 111 calls.

Crime in the area has been going down over the last few years and Sergeant Bradley Allen told the Wainuiomata News so far this year the trend has continued.

“A reduction in crime is always good and we are pleased with how 2014 is going,” Mr Allen says.

Callouts for Wainuiomata Police are more commonly associated with burglaries, traffi c offences and domes-

tic violence issues, and in December police received about 30 calls in relation to these crimes.

“Christmas and New Years is genuinely quiet for us as most people go away. Our most common calls are domestic violence related,” Mr Allen says.

Wainuiomata Police also received two calls in re-gards to burglaries over the December-January period.

WAINUIOMATA POLICE: Sergeant Bradley Allen pleased the reduction of crime in the area.

Wainuiomata has lost a valuable mem-ber of its community with Robert (Bob) William Patterson passing away on December 20, 2013, at age 77.

Born in the Wellington suburb of Rongotai, Mr Patterson was the young-est child of six - two brothers and three sisters.

He was a local through and through, and volunteering at Wainuiomata Rugby Club and the local fi re station for many years, Mr Patterson’s services to the community will be greatly missed.

Mr Patterson’s family say he loved a good party and was usually the last to leave social gatherings. They also say he loved to laugh and had a wicked sense of humour.

Daughter, Vicky Payne says if there were many more men in the world like her Dad it would be a far better place.

“Although he had no time for church, he had more Christian values than any religious person I have ever met. His qualities are not learned, he was born with them,” Ms Payne says.

“[He was] down to earth and he treated everybody in the same way no matter who they were,” she says.

Ms Payne told the Wainuiomata News she adored dad and he adored her but, the love of his life was mum. Mr Patterson was married to Jan for more than 50 years.

As a dad, Mr Patterson was always on the side line at athletics or whatever other sport his children did, shouting words of encouragement, Ms Payne says.

“A man with a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye.”

“There was not a mean bone in his body. He was kind, fair and did not judge and had a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye,” his daughter says.

Mr Patterson was also an avid DIYer and nothing he built or engineered ever fell apart, Ms Payne says.

A memorial service was held at the Wai-nuiomata Rugby Club to honour the long serving club member earlier this month. An estimated 300 people gathered to pay their last respects.

OBITUARY

A young gardener’s effort in a recent zucchini growing competition has paid off.

Wainuiomata’s Isabelle Dobbs, 7, won the competition with a zucchini which weighed a whopping 3.3kg.

Isabelle put a lot of effort into the care and growth of her entry, making sure it was watered regularly.

The local girl comes from a dynasty of winning gardeners with grand-mother, dad and herself all winning places at a fl ower show last year.

Isabelle goes to Arakura School in Wainuiomata.

For winning she received a $50 voucher from the Village Four Square and the admiration of fellow adult

gardeners, says organiser Miriam Exley.

“In the true nature of gardeners, the big zucchini was given away to Isabelle’s great grandmother’s neighbour,” she says.

Second and third place were also won by other local gardeners.

The Giant Zucchini competition last year was held in association with the Homedale Village Market in October and the 2014 crop of choice will be the potato.

Seed potatoes and competion rules will be given out at the October mar-ket, and Ms Exley says: “I’m really delight that the locals came out and supported this gardening initiative.”

Planning is well underway for Shapeshifter, now in its sixth year.

The scultpure exhibition will take over Hutt City’s Civic Gardens during The New Zealand Festival.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Hutt City, the exhibition shows imaginative work from 58 artists across New Zealand selected by The Dowse Art Museum’s director, Courtney Johnston.

This year Shapeshifter has extended opening hours (11am-7pm each day) to make the most of the warm summer evenings.

People are encouraged to take the op-portunity for after work viewings or to pack a picnic and join friends for a special and enjoyable garden dinner amongst the art. While there is an admission charge, Shapeshifter is a fundraising exhibition with all money going to local charities Te Omanga Hospice, the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute, The Dowse Art Museum and youth programmes in the Hutt Valley.

All work is for sale – both in the outdoor exhibition and inside in the daily display.

An exercise programme designed specifi cally for breast cancer sur-vivors is gaining momentum with Hutt Valley residents.

Encore is an eight week, free ex-ercise programme for women who have had breast cancer. It includes water and land based exercises as well as healthy lifestyle informa-tion, relaxation and peer support.

Hutt Valley facilitator Claire Laurenson says the programme has a lot of emotional benefits on breast cancer survivors who attend.

“It gets women together who have had a common experience, one that can be really isolating and provides them with a forum to be themselves,” Ms Laurenson says.

For women who have experi-enced breast cancer, the associated physical effects can be extremely

challenging.“It helps women get back into

life,” she says.Encore is a Young Women’s

Christian Association (YWCA) run programme around New Zealand. Encore receives funding from The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Encore was set up in the Wel-lington region in 2009.

“It’s all about supporting women, doing something actively and be-ing a part of their recovery,” says Ms Laurenson.

The next YWCA Encore pro-gramme for the Hutt Valley starts on February 21 at Hutt Hospital from 1pm, and while the pro-gramme is free registrations are essential.

Shane Richardson has only been racing professionally for a year, but that has not stopped him from impressive results.

The 18-year-old Wainuiomata rider raced in the 600 Sports Production Cemetery Circuit races on Boxing Day, placing sixth and eighth.

Along with the Boxing Day races, Shane has also raced in the Victoria Motorcycle Club Winter Series, Suzuki Series, and the fi rst two rounds of a Superbike Championship.

“I race for the thrill of it,” Shane says.“[I’ve] probably raced to speeds

around 260 kilometres per hour,” the young rider says.

The Wainuiomata High School gradu-ate switched to road racing in 2013 after riding motor cross for 14 years.

Still in his prime, Shane’s goals this year include learning more, getting faster, and refi ning his riding technique

to improve his racing. He also aims to fi nish the tour in the top three.

In order to reach these goals, Shane rides and works on his Honda CBR600 every day – learning the ins and outs of the bike.

“I wake up early, set up the pit, change the tyres, and then work on my bike,” Shane says.

This preparation process occurs all before he even begins to practice his racing.

Shane’s main infl uence is Marc Mar-quez, a 20 year-old Spanish motorcycle road racer who has achieved several championships at a young age.

After recent success and dedication to the sport, Wainuiomata may have its own version of Marquez in Shane.

The success will not come cheap and Shane wishes to thank those who have supported him over the years.

Shane is currently sitting in 18th place of the national racing standings.

ing Club’s premier team were bowl-ing spectacularly last Thursday as part of the women’s pennants competition.

Winning two games from two, president Marie Walsh says the tournament always turns out some entertaining games and it is always good to socialise with the other clubs.

Wainuiomata beat Tawa in the fi rst game 24-13, and Hutt Valley 22-14.

The competition was also hosted by a number of clubs around the Wellington region.

Players from the clubs partake in the weekly tournaments that are usually played throughout the day

on a Thursday unless postponed. “It’s very good to have two wins

out of three games so far this year,” Mrs Walsh says.

She says teams consist of four players and the other members of the Wainuiomata squad were Mar-garet Riches, Pat Dixon and Pops Grobbelaar.

The next round of the women’s pennants tournament will be rounds seven and eight held tomorrow.

Wainuiomata’s leading ladies will be hosted at the Tawa Bowling Club and will compete against Petone and Wilton counterparts.

Other clubs represented in the pen-nants tournament included Stokes Valley and Johnsonville.

Wainuiomata’s premier re-serve cricket team faced its Naenae counterparts over the weekend but unfortunately came up short.

Played at Bryan Heath Park in Wainuiomata, the local team was focused from the first bowl and maintained a level of sportsmanship throughout the day despite the loss.

Naenae won the match by

one run, finishing with 85 runs and fi ve wickets remain-ing. Wainuiomata was all out for 84 runs.

Wainuiomata’s Dwayne de Boer was the day’s top scorer with 20 runs not out. Dwayne ran out of partners and was made to retire.

Iain Matheson, Wainuio-mata’s star bowler, picked up several wickets against the Naenae side also.

his focus to an entirely different form of motorcycle competition - off-road enduro riding - and is already showing he is a fast learner.

The seven-time former and current na-tional moto trials champion’s consistency has given him the early lead in the popular KTM Extreme Enduro Series.

Riding his Husaberg FE250, Whitaker leads the competition after three of fi ve rounds.

The 22-year-old rider also broke through to record a win in the endurocross fi nal race, a separate competition incorporated into the recent Tokoroa-based.

Whitaker remains the KTM Extreme Enduro Series leader, edging ahead of series rival Sean Clarke.

Only four of the fi ve rounds count as riders can discard their worst result.

Round four of the KTM Extreme Enduro Series is the Te Puke Endurocross on February 8.

Wainuiomata Rugby Club has kicked off its preseason training early this and players – and coaches – hope 2014 will be their year on top.

Although the rugby season does not begin until March, the town’s sporting icons have been getting back in to their fi tness routines following the Decem-ber/January holiday break.

Training will be held at Moohan St ground until players are moved down the road due to

upgrades on the fi eld.Club chairman Jim Millar

believes players that make the effort now will see a benefi t once games begin.

weddings which took place in the Pioneer Church in the early part of the 20th Century, the Wainuiomata Historic Society is going to feature weddings which have taken place in the church in more recent times.

This wedding shows Moira Burdan, a descendant of the Pioneer Burdan family, get-ting married to Steve Cun-ningham. The Church was filled to capacity for this beautiful winter wedding.

Adopt-a-thon loved by localsThe Society for the Prevention of Cruelty

to Animals (SPCA) ran an adopt-a-thon at the Wainuiomata Community Hall over the weekend with a signifi cant turn out.

Wainuiomata-based adopt-a-thon was suc-cessful with fi ve cats being re-homed by local families.

A spokesperson from the Wellington SPCA says it was a good result with residents signing up to adopt.

Staff members at the Wellington SPCA face an ongoing battle with fi nding suitable owners for homeless pets. They continue to hold adoption days throughout the year for potential pet owners to come see the animals that need a home.

A full list of pets ready for adoption can be found on the SPCA website – www.welling-tonspca.org.nz. Pets includes kittens, puppies, cats, dogs and smaller animals such as rabbits.

The next community adoption events are this Saturday at the Churton Park Community Centre from 12pm to 3pm, and Miramar Com-munity Centre at the same time.
