PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Jennifer Lopez, President
2010-2011 Wake Forest Woman’s Club
It is a great honor to serve as the Wake Forest Woman‟s Club President for the 2010-2011
Administration. We are a club that is changing, growing and adapting as our community continues to
grow in leaps and bounds experiencing all the benefits and perils that come with expansion.
For the 2010-2011 Administration, we have set our course with the theme of “Rooted In Service” to
guide us in our endeavors. We will Tend Our Roots which have identified and grounded the Wake Forest
Woman‟s Club within the community through the programs and projects offered by the Community
Service Programs. We will Strengthening our Roots through our relationships and our commitment to
serve along with others where and when there is need. Completing our Theme, we will Cultivate Our
Roots by cultivating the relationships and resources offered to us from our younger sister‟s of the Wake
Forest Junior‟s; from the direction and leadership offered to us by GFWC Federation, GFWC-NC and
District VI.
Finally, we have an exciting year ahead of us with many new adventures, not the least of which is the
launching of the Inaugural Wake Forest Woman‟s Club Antiques and Collectibles Show and Sale in
April 2011. With all consideration of this project, I have challenged the membership of the WFWC to
commit to a club total of 1000 Service Hours performed during the 2010-2011 year. That breaks down to
25 service hours from each member or 3.125 hours per member each month. With so many wonderful
opportunities to service our community and our world, this will be light work!
Together, Rooted In Service, we can not only accomplish our goals, but we can exceed them!
Yours in service,
Jennifer Brighton Lopez, email: [email protected]

THE CLUBWOMAN’S HYMN
Words by Sallie Southall Cotten
Music by Ethel Abbott
Each joy we meet, each friend we greet,
From mountain and from sea;
Hand clasped in hand, as one we stand,
In Faith and Loyalty.
We love our work, no task we shirk,
We serve where needs are found;
A good deed done, is for each one,
To make more joy abound.
A fire with zeal we seek the wealth,
Of nation, state and home.
That all may share, in our welfare,
And none be forced to roam.
Always we seek, to lift the weak,
To help the strong grow wise;
To fill our hearts with love and peace,
That we with them may rise.
Let Carolina womanhood
Arise in all its might;
With purpose strong, to right the wrong,
And make the earth‟s pathway bright.
God guide us in our work and play,
God keep us brave and true;
Our efforts bless, and bring success,
To all we strive to do.
29
A COLLECT FOR CLUBWOMEN
Keep us, oh God, from pettiness;
Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.
Let us be done with fault-finding
And leave off self-seeking.
May we put away all pretense
And meet each other face to face;
Without self-pity and without prejudice.
May we never be hasty in judgment,
And always generous.
Let us take time for all things:
Make us to grow calm, serene, gentle.
Teach us to put into action our better impulses,
Straightforward and unafraid.
Grant that we may realize it is
The little things that create differences,
That in the big things in life we are at one.
And may we strive to touch and to know
The great, common human heart of us all.
And, oh Lord God, let us forget not to be kind!

CLUB LITANY by Alice Ames Winters
Leader: God, our Creator, our Father and our Friend,
from many homes and with many minds we come together this
day, bound each to each as children of Thy Wisdom, Thy Love,
Thy Will.
Response: May day unto day utter speech and night unto night show
knowledge.
Leader: May the Spirit of the Lord rest upon us, the Spirit of Wisdom and
Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel and Right, the Spirit of
Knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
Response: Of us may it be said: In her tongue is the law of kindness,
she looketh to the ways of her household and eateth not
the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her
blessed, saying, “Many daughters have done virtuously,
but thou excelleth them all.”
Leader: Here may mercy and truth meet together, righteousness and peace
kiss each other.
Response: So teach us to number our days that we may apply our
hearts unto wisdom.
Leader: Here shall we stand in the ways and ask where is the good way,
that we may walk therein.
Response: Behind Thy Wisdom and Thy Counsel lieth Thy Love.
Leader: Though we have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries
and all knowledge and though we have all faith so that we could
remove mountains and have not Love, we are nothing.
Response: Will Thou light a candle of understanding in our hearts that
shall not be put out.
Leader: Teach us that we cannot truly pray Thy prayer without a pledge
that we will fulfill the humble part or bring to pass Thy Will and Thy
Kingdom here on earth.
All: Our Father, who art in Heaven….

HISTORY
The main objective of the Wake Forest Woman‟s Club is the betterment of the community in the fields of
social, cultural, civic and educational life of the individual. The Club took as its first major project the sponsorship and establishment of the Wake Forest Library.
The Olivia Raney Foundation gave $3,000 toward a library in Wake Forest. The Town Commissioners
gave their assistance and the library opened in 1962 in the Holding Cotton Building. In 1973, the Club accepted the challenge of the Central Carolina Bank to raise matching funds in the community and use
them for a library building. As a result, $5,056.26 was raised and the library moved into the current
building previously occupied by the Central Carolina Bank. The second major project was to give support and assistance to the restoration of the Calvin Jones House,
Birthplace of Wake Forest College. One club member was elected to the Board of Trustees and another
served as chairman of membership for many years. Both the library and the Calvin Jones House have
continued to receive support from the Club under each succeeding administration. In 1966, the Club approached the town officials with the idea of fluoridating the municipal water supply.
The machinery was set in place and fluoridation was accomplished.
When the polio vaccine drive was held in the community, members of the Woman‟s Club assisted. Over the years, Club members have given help to the schools. Early in the Club‟s existence, support for
Break Through provided many teaching hours for the schools. A Safety Patrol was sponsored at the
elementary schools and uniforms were purchased. Members worked with the Society for Autistic Children and Adults; and with the Wake County Literacy Council, teaching reading to functionally
illiterate adults.
In recent years, other projects have been undertaken to help the Wake Forest Schools. When students at
the middle school took standardized tests, Club members served as proctors. Magazines and “Mini Pages” are donated to the elementary school and cookbooks were donated to the Home Economics
Department of the high school. Also, a high school student is sponsored in the Hugh O‟Brian Youth
Foundation Leadership Conference every year. Each year, the Club supported an academic scholarship for a high school senior‟s freshman year at
college. It was initiated in 1971 for $100 and increased to $500 in 1994 and $600 in 1997.
English was taught to Spanish speaking migrant works. Assistance was given to CROP Walk, Run for
Ileitis and Colitis Foundation, Senior Citizens, Keep America Beautiful, Tour of Historical Homes in Wake Forest, Get Out The Vote and Support the Troops who fought in the Persian Gulf War. Members
