The Mudtools Shredder is an indispensable tool for shaping and carving leather hard

clay. For years you could find a tool like this at the hardware store. This rasp was

designed to be used on wood. Clay people, sculptors and auto-body repairmen

discovered how well the blade worked on other materials (like clay and auto body

filler). The problem was the handle design. The handle would trap clay and get

clogged up. Michael designed a new open blade shape as well as a comfortable

ergonomic grip. It functions well, doesn’t trap the waste clay in the tool and doesn’t

frustrate the user. An added benefit is the tool mark, it leaves a handsome textured

surface in the clay.

In the beginning was the rib…

The rib was one of the first tools that Michael started making for himself and then shared with others.

A rib is one of the most basic and frequently used tools in clay. Because it acts as an extension of the potter’s own hand, it should function well and be a joy to use.

Our Mudtool ribs are made from a flexible material that is considered the “stainless

steel” of plastics. Unlike rubber, this material will not develop burrs or cracks. In

fact, these ribs will burnish themselves as you use them, so, the more you use them the nicer they become.

Available in six shapes, these ribs cover a lot of what hand builders and throwers

need from a rib. Each rib shape is available in four degrees of hardness; from very

soft to very firm. You choose the shape and hardness that suits your clay and your

working style.

The Green Mudwire is ergonomically designed to be a pleasure to use. The handle is

made with a durable polymer and is shaped to give you a good grip without having to wrap

the wire around your fingers. The high grade stainless steel braided cable is more resistant

to kinking than traditional cut-off wires. This cut-off wire is suited for a standard 33cm

wheel-head and makes a clean cut- you’ll use it every day.

The Heavy Duty Black Mudwire is the big brother of the Standard Green general-

use wire. The handle is made with a durable polymer and is shaped to give you a good grip

without having to wrap the wire around your fingers. The high grade surgical stainless

steel braided cable is more resistant to kinking than traditional cut-off wires. The black

Mudwire is made with a heavier cable appropriate to use under heavier/larger pots and

platters. Good for cutting big slabs off a block of clay.

Mudsponges - W5040-41-42

The Mudsponge White Finishing is pop up sponge made with a tight-cell material and is less absorbent

than the Mudsponge Blue Workhorse. It is excellent for finishing work, final detail and clean-up of

surfaces and won’t pull out grog or other materials in the clay body. Think of it like a chamois sponge.

Natural sponges have been used for years. However, the quality of natural sponges can be unpredictable and

there are some issues of environmental pressure on the little guys. Our sponges are made of an

environmentally friendly material that is incredibly durable and compressed for economy of space and for

the fun of watching them expand when introduced to water.

Mudsponge Blue Workhorse is a great all-purpose pop-up sponge made of an open cell material that is

very absorbent. We’ve shaped it like a potters rib to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. Dyed with a

natural pigment, the color will fade with use.

In my studio, my Mudcutter (wire tool) is the tool that I pick up the most. I made one

many years ago and used it on production pots cutting spouts and lugs, and also like a

needle tool. The Mudcutter has been designed to go around a 4 inch pug, or an

extrusion. The design lends itself to the slicing and cutting of hand building, or at the

wheel it fits well in the hand. This is the best all around wire tool for six inch pugged

clay, cutting spouts, and cutting off extusions. It also works great as a faceting tool.

This is one tool that once you use it, you will ask yourself 'how did I work without it?'

Mudcutter is made of stainless steel with a surgical stainless steel wire under tension.

It is easy to change the wires, if needed. The handle has an insert made from the

same material as the ribs. The tool is made so you can lay it in a bucket of water and

it won't rust or degrade. This is a lifetime tool.

The Mudcutter wire tool is essential to the potter.

Replacement wires are available in either straight or curly designs. The Mudcutter is

slightly larger than the Carving Bow, thus the wires are specific for each tool.

Mudshark - W5044

The Mudshark is a needle tool and fettling knife in one! The needle folds and locks

out of the way so you won't impale your hand when you reach into your tool box.

When Michael visited potters in Japan he observed that it was common for them to pull, rather than push,

their carving tools through the clay. The dragging motion allowed for less friction and a fluid cut. For years

Michael has made a variety of Japanese-style carving tools for his own use and he’s spent A LOT of time

carving on clay. Made of high carbon steel and tempered to be very hard, the Dragtool is designed to grace

the hand and make a fluted mark in the clay. One end cuts a wider flute than the other. Whether you draw a

long fluted line or chip away at the clay, the texture looks beautiful under a celadon or any glaze that breaks

on the surface.

The Bump is made with a solid aluminum shaft that is bendable but not flexible. The

sponge end is a very dense material that becomes chamois like when wet and it has

a hard ball inside that. The whole thing is designed to allow for great leverage to

move clay in those tricky places that you cannot get your hand.

Hax Tool - W5039

With its serrated edge, the HAX is Michael's version of a hacksaw blade for scoring

and manicuring. It is designed specifically for clay, especially for fine particle clay like

porcelain. The HAX tool is made of flexible, bendable stainless steel and it can be bent

for rounded surfaces and hard to reach areas.

Available with either a plain smooth edge (SSL) or with an extra fine 24-tooth

serrated (SSL24) or fine 18-tooth (SSL18) serrated edge. Made from the highest

quality stainless steel, these scrapers are flexible and bendable. These scrapers are

15.4 cm long by 3,5cm high.

We make our Paddle out of reclaimed local hardwood. We rescue this beautiful hardwood from dead

trees to make a paddle that will give you a lifetime of use. This little guy works hard, whether you are

using it to close two seams together, to put a pleat in a tea bowl or to deform a small pot.

Why do we include a sleeve for the Paddle? The Paddle will do the job with or without a cover, but if

you work in wet sticky clay then you know how a paddle wants to cling to the surface. A sleeve will let the paddle release quickly when you slap the clay. Get one and start slapping your clay today!
