Description and status The Fen raft spider (Dolomedes plantarius) is one of Wales’ largest and rarest spiders, reaching up to 23mm in length. They are largely aquatic animals, dependent on the presence of standing or slow-moving water. They inhabit the margins of pools or ditches and are able to hunt above and below the water surface. Plant stems which emerge from the water are used as perches for hunting or basking, and to support the large ‘nursery’ webs in which the spiders rear their young. The female Fen raft spider is a wonderfully attentive parent – she carries her developing eggs in an egg sac for up to four weeks, when the young are ready to hatch she weaves a tent-like nursery web which she guards as the spiderlings grow. Fen raft spider is listed on the Section 42 list of Species of Principle Importance in Wales, and is known from only a tiny cluster of sites in South Wales including the Tennant Canal, Pant-Y-Sais fen NNR and Crymlyn Bog NNR. Threats The main threat facing the Fen raft spider in South Wales is loss of suitable habitat, and in particular the encroachment of scrub and reeds which reduces areas of deep open water and results in the loss of diverse fen vegetation. This species is also sensitive to varying water levels, particularly low water levels causing sites to dry out, and water quality. Actions required 1. Appropriate habitat management, including grazing, to retain areas of open water and create structurally diverse vegetation. 2. Ensure good water quality of the Tennant Canal, Pant-Y-Sais fen NNR and Crymlyn Bog NNR. 3. Monitoring of known populations to assess the spiders responses to management regimes and changes in water levels and water quality. Disgrifiad a statwsCorryn Rafftio’r Gors Galch (Dolomedes plantarius) yw un o gorynod prinnaf Cymru a’r mwyaf o ran maint, gall dyfu i 23mm o hyd. Maent yn anifeiliaid dyfrol yn bennaf, ac yn dibynnu ar bresenoldeb dŵr sy’n sefyll neu’n symud yn araf. Maent yn byw ar hyd glannau pyllau neu ffosydd ac yn gallu hela uwchlaw ac o dan y dŵr. Defnyddir coesynnau planhigion sy’n tyfu o’r dŵr fel clwydi ar gyfer hela neu dorheulo, ac i gynnal y ‘gwe-feithrinfeydd’ mawr ble bydd y corynod yn magu eu rhai bach. Mae’r Corryn Rafftio’r Gors Galch fenywaidd yn rhiant hynod o ofalus – bydd yn cario ei hwyau mewn sach am hyd at bedair wythnos; pan fo’r rhain yn barod i ddeor bydd yn gwehyddu gwe-feithrinfa ar ffurf pabell a bydd yn ei gwarchod yn ofalus tra bo’r corynnod bychain yn tyfu. Mae Corryn Rafftio’r Gors Galch wedi ei gynnwys ar restr Adran 42 o Rywogaethau Pwysig Iawn yng Nghymru, ac mae i’w ganfod ar ddim ond clwstwr bychan iawn o safleoedd yn Ne Cymru, yn cynnwys Camlas Tennant, GNG Cors Pant-Y-Sais a GNG Cors Crymlyn.

BygythiadauY prif fygythiad sy’n wynebu Corryn Rafftio’r Gors Galch yn Ne Cymru yw colli cynefin addas, ac yn enwedig ymlediad prysgwydd a chyrs sy’n lleihau ardaloedd o ddŵr agored dwfn ac sy’n arwain at golli amrywiaeth mewn llystyfiant ar y corsydd. Mae’r rhywogaeth yma hefyd yn sensitif i amrywiadau mewn lefelau dŵr, yn enwedig lefelau dŵr isel sy’n peri i safleoedd sychu, ac ansawdd dŵr gwael.

Gweithredu angenrheidiol1. Rheolaeth briodol o gynefinoedd, gan gynnwys pori, er mwyn cadw ardaloedd o ddŵr agored a chreu llystyfiant sy’n amrywiol o ran strwythur.2. Sicrhau ansawdd dŵr da ar Gamlas Tennant, GNG Cors Pant-Y-Sais a GNG Cors Crymlyn.3. Monitro poblogaethau y gwyddom amdanynt er mwyn asesu ymatebion corynod i gynlluniau rheoli a newidiadau i lefelau dŵr ac ansawdd dŵr.
