walk just as he walked
DESCRIPTION
Synopsis: John teaches us that an important part of being in fellowship with God is that we walk as He walked. To do this we must consider how he walked in the world and then be ready to imitate Him. Perhaps more importantly, this reminds us that truth is for doing. Thoughts from this lesson from Martyn Lloyd-Jones in Studies in 1 John: Walking with God and Jim McGuiggan ( http://www.jimmcguiggan.com/weekly2.asp?id_message=58 )TRANSCRIPT
WalkJust As
HE Walked1 John 2.6, CB NT p. 420
“Not to know that any Christian spirit working kindly in its little sphere, whatever it may be, will find its mortal life too short for its vast means of usefulness. Not to know that no space of regret can make amends for one life’s opportunity misused!”
—A Christmas CarolCharles Dickens
“Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were, all, my business.”
—A Christmas CarolCharles Dickens
“The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!”
—A Christmas CarolCharles Dickens
Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
1 John 2:4-6; CB NT p. 429
How did Jesus walk?
Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
John 4:34; CB NT p. 168
“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.
John 5:30; CB NT p. 170
For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
John 6:38; CB NT p. 173
So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”
John 8:28-29; CB NT p. 178
but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
John 14:31; CB NT p. 193
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.
John 15:10; CB NT p. 193
I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
John 17:4; CB NT p. 196
How did Jesus walk?
“He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”
Acts 10:38, CB NT p. 227
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
1 Peter 2:21; CB NT p. 410
He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.
1 Peter 2:22; CB NT p. 410
Purity
Rightousness
When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
1 Peter 2:23; CB NT p. 410
Love
Serving
Humility
Compassion
Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
1 John 2:4-6; CB NT p. 429
How did Jesus walk?
Truth is for
DOING!
Truth is for
DOING!
If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
1 John 1:6; CB NT p. 419
whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
1 John 2:6; CB NT p. 420
Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.
1 John 3:7; CB NT p. 422
Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
1 John 3:18; CB NT p. 422
Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Matthew 7:24; CB NT p. 13
You are the saltof the earth
Matthew 5:13; CB NT p. 7
let your light shine
Matthew 5:16; CB NT p. 7
I want to be a worker
for the Lordgg
Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
Ephesians 5:14-16; CB NT p. 341
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:14-16; CB NT p. 341
Truth is for
DOING!
Will today be the day you decide
to go toheaven?
