Mentoring Sessions

Date: 13th July 2016, 14th July 2016, 20th July 2016, 27th July 2016

Time: 12:50 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Students were called personally one by one; there area of interest, their wishes and aspirations

etc. were asked. Along with this I added the importance of character in once life. “If character is

lost everything is lost”. I explained the way in which we have to behave towards others. World

as such will be with us if we go for attaining a task and if the task is made in a true way.

Whatever hurdles comes in the midst would be overcome and we would reach our desired goals

if we work hard for the same with an innocent heart without hurting others. I discussed about the

societies interest in general especially in certain groups which are found every were who makes

bad comments, indulging in dirty talks, thinking negatively saying negative of others, hurting

others directly and indirectly which is a passion in the minds of certain people without which

they can’t stay happily. By hurting at least even a single person in a day, these people will not

feel normal and the group for them would be very strong and the innocent victim being idle and

lonelier by others who feel what they had done is good. I said to my students that even if you

become lonely for such things, never go to such dirty pits or groups whatever happens. There are

certain people who are good but due to pressure from the big folk fall into their groups and does

mischiefs and crimes. I just added a quote in Malayalam i.e,

“UpakaaramChathillekilumUpadravikkaruthu”. Because only those who have gone through such

firewalls can only understand the pressure and tension which one faces while dealing with such

people. I gave a lot of examples of successful personalities like film stars, politicians, musicians,

sports men etc. who passed through these firewalls and successfully enlighten into the world as a

famous figure. I quoted a famous versus from the Holy Bible to my students which is general to

all people i.e.,“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as

serpents and innocent as doves”.

Page 16: WALK WITH A SCHOLAR PROGRAMMEMs. Harsha Paul, Assistant Professor in Chemistry. A Review meeting of the internal mentors of IDC and IIDC was done. A discussion on the internal mentoring

Date: 4th August2016,5th August 2016

Time: 12:50 p.m. to 1:50 p.m.

As my mentees haven’t attended moral instruction classes conducted by myself to the students

(which is provided to those students whom I am the class teacher), I gave a talk on value

education, the importance of value in life.“If you have everything in life, but are not at all happy

what is the use of it”. This thought was discussed in detail which is very necessary in one’s life.

Because the previous topic and this one is very important for a person without which whatever

he or she attains is worthlessin front of a valuable society. If he or she is a very high official and

doesn’t have a goodpersonality and character at all, what is the use????????

Date: 9th August 2016

Time: 12:50 p.m. to 1:50 p.m.

I quoted those people who make public speeches so beautifully in a very simple language. The

way they put their speech attracts others. This is gained by them mainly through reading books,

magazines, stories, newspapers, articles etc., which is gained not instantly, but with a span of

time. So the importance reading habits were pointed out in the session. In order to be active in a

pubic speech, instant debate in an interview or a competition, to give a talk on a topic, we need

instant reading everyday which increases our vocabulary, effective thinking, thinking out of the

box, i.e., not thinking just four walls of our house, college, friends etc. but as a society in a

whole, as our state, country and the world as a whole. What I can do the society? What footprints

can be made by me before I pass away from this world? Will the society/ state/country/world

remember me as an outstanding personality after my death???

Date: 28th September 2016, 29th September 2016, 6th October and 7th October 2016

The new academic year has started and we resumed our walk with a scholar programme at the

end of June. Saranya, Nihala, Safa, Shilpa and Roopika attended this meeting. They all looked to

be fresh after reopening. We discussed the experience of the vacations. Everyone expected their

second semester exams in June but didn’t happen.

01/07/2016 Time : 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p. m.

Nandhita pauly of D2 physics came to meet me in the evening. She also looked good in the new

academic year. She told about her father’s health who was having some serious physical

ailments. She also told me that her younger sister Jasmine is also seeking admission in our

college for Physics.

08/07/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 01:50 p.m.

Nihala, Safa, Saranya and Roopika met me and told that they got the first internal exam time

table. English is the only subject that they score low marks always. So I asked them to prepare

for it well in advance.

01/08/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 01:50 p.m.

Nandhitha came to me with some excitement as she got her internal marks. She scored really

well in Physics (36/40), Chemistry (29/32) and Hindi (33/40). But she made some mistakes in

maths and she could score only 26 out of 40. She was disappointed about it and knew well where

she made errors. I advised her to concentrate on her weak points. Also asked her to practice

problems in Maths repeatedly so that she can master the subject. In English she got 27 out of 40

and this is the case with almost all the students.

05/08/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 01:50 p.m. Roopika S. Nath came to me with her first internal marks that she recently got. Except in English

(20/40) she scored well in oyher subjects. She got Economics (28/40), History (34/40), sociology

(34/40), Malayalam (32/40) and Statistics (30/40). Statistics was bit tough for her and she

couldn’t get enough time to complete the exam properly. I asked her to manage time for writing

exams. 08/08/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 01:50 p.m.

Shilpa S of D2 Zoology also brought her internal marks on Monday. She also had low mark in

English (20/40). Other subjects she did really well. Zoology (35/40), Hindi (37/40), Chemistry

(31.5/32) and Botany (31/32).

12/08/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 01:50 p.m.

In this meeting both Sushmakumari and Saranya met me in the afternoon. We had a friendly

chat. Saranya showed her Internal marks and Sushma was bit hesitant to reveal her marks. I told

her that it is not compulsory to share your marks with me. If she feels like doing so she can do or

else leave it. Then she was happy.

But Saranya had her results and she had nice marks in all subjects. Sanskrit (39.5/40), English

(26/40), History (26/40), Informatics and History (26/40), Economics (38/40) and ICP (26/40).

She improved a lot in English and she started reading English news papers.

16/08/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 01:50 p.m.

Saranya came to me for a personal meeting. I was shocked initially by hearing that she came to

invite me for her own wedding which is scheduled on 4th Sept 2016.

Her fiancée is doing business and he is ready to allow her to pursue her studies. I was happy by

hearing that. But I strictly told her to do well in her studies because she will be having her second

semester exams on 7th Sept 2016.

19/08/2016 Time: 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.

Shilpa came to me in the evening and we had some friendly chat. She mentioned me that her

parents are looking for a bridegroom for her. I suggested her whatever happens stick to her goals.

She became happy.

22/08/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 01:50 p.m.

Safa came after a long gap as she had a severe fever since last couple of weeks. She has to go to

hospital everyday for her injections. She lost her weight drastically and became so weak. I was

literally shocked by seeing her weak. She missed many classes and she was sad. I told her first

she has to improve her health then she can do other things including studies. I called up her

mother and talked to her about Safa’s health.

29/08/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 01:50 p.m.

Roopika, Nihala and Shilpa met me in BSc. Lab. They told me that their second semester

university exams has been postponed. They already started preparing for it, and was unhappy

with the dates of the exams. I told them to stick on their studies n o matter what are the dates.

Nihala will be having her exams right in the beginning of September.

01/09/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 01:50 p.m.

Nandhitha, Saranya, Roopika and Sushma came to me in the lunch break to inform me about

their time table for the 2nd semester university exams. They were preparing for it since last April.

They told me that they have already started their preparation. But Saranya had some worries as

her marriage was scheduled on 4th September 2016 (Sunday). She had to really prepare her mind

for the marriage as well as her university exams. We planned to go for the wedding if wxam get

post-poned to give her moral support.

09/09/2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 01:50 p.m.

Safa came to me and told me that the exams got postponed and there is no tension for Saranya as

she will get a couple of days to prepare after her wedding. We were really happy by hearing this

and I immediately called Saranya and talked to her. She also felt relaxed. Safa was excited about

the onam celebrations which was going in our college. My daughter was with me and Safa

became friend with my daughter. She seemed to be quiet energetic after her illness and started

preparation for the exams.

22/09/2016 Time: 12.00 p.m to 01:00 p.m. Nandhitha Pauly came to meet me and asked me some doubts in chemistry. I clarified it. I

enquired about her 2nd semester exams so far done. She seemed to be happy with her

performance.

30/09/2016 Time: 8.30 a.m to 09:30 a.m.

I visited Safa’s home as she was on her study leave, preparing at home. I was worried about her

health. So I wanted to meet her as well as her mother. I met her grandmother, father and aunt

there. We had some nice time by chatting. Her mother discussed with me about her future and

told her about the opportunities that she has after the graduation.

Date: 07-09-2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 1.50 p.m

Topic: Getting acquainted and acquiring Bio Data

Goal: To meet all the mentees, observe their general interests, collect their details.

All of the mentees were asked to fill their profile and submit it. It was a general meet where

everyone was acquainted with each other informally. Mentor was formally introduced and shared

her common areas of interests with them.

Date: 30-09-2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 1.50 p.m

Topic: Self Introduction

Goal: Identify body language, point out positives and give suggestions for improvement

They were asked to introduce themselves informally. Mentees were timid at first. Lack of

gestures, fidgeting, slight swinging when standing, lack of eye contact were some of the traits

shown by them. Was able to identify their shortcomings, suggest ways to overcome them and

highlight their positives, like their use of language and some of their body language.

Date: 26-10-2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 1.50 p.m

Topic: Food Habits and Table Manners

Goal: To give them a general awareness about the importance of having food on time and being

aware of what they are putting inside their bodies. Also educate them about forgotten table

manners.

Being a generation where dieting is considered a fashion, educating them about the importance

of eating the right food at the right time, rather than skipping meals, was necessary. They

contributed in the discussion with their point of views. All of them claimed to not have skipped

meals in the name of dieting. Many children have forgotten the etiquettes of being at the dining

table. Was able to educate them about the general rules of table manners.

Date: 03-11-2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 1.50 p.m

Topic: Formal Self Introduction

Goal: Introduce oneself in English as if at a formal interview.

Page 44: WALK WITH A SCHOLAR PROGRAMMEMs. Harsha Paul, Assistant Professor in Chemistry. A Review meeting of the internal mentors of IDC and IIDC was done. A discussion on the internal mentoring

The students were given time to prepare themselves to present. A few of them preferred to write

down some keywords to remember what to say. While most of the managed to complete the task

within the given time, and were ready to present. Observed reluctance in starting first! But,

eventually they overcame their starting trouble. They were given 7 minutes to present. Most of

them had good language and were confident. After all presentations were done, I asked all of

them to point out the positives and negatives of each other’s presentations. This created room for

improvement and also highlighted their positives which gave them confidence.

Date: 24-11-2016 Time: 12.50 p.m to 1.50 p.m

Topic: Open Interview Tips

Goal: Make students prepare a detailed presentation on topics of hobbies, family, aims &

challenges in life. Make them interview each other and give a small idea as to how formal

interviews will be.

Mentees were given time to prepare for their presentations. An interview starts even before the

candidate is seated. The correct body language and apt dressing styles for a formal interview was

imparted to them. Told them that over the top gestures would always distract the panel from

what you are trying to say. At the end of the session, I asked them to be prepared for the

interview in the next session.

Date: 05-01-2017 Time: 12.50 p.m to 1.50 p.m

Topic: Mock Interview

Goal: Conduct a mock interview. The panel consisted of the mentees themselves, each of them

taking turns to become the interviewee.

Mentees were given time to prepare questions to ask their interviewee. All of them presented by

taking turn. The interview panel was strong, they asked good questions about the presentations of

each mentee to which most of them they were able to reply with confidence. I could observe the

mentees feeling more confident about them by the end of the session.

Date: 08-02-2017 Time: 1.00 p.m to 2.00 p.m

Topic: Group Discussion

Goal: Identify how the mentees worked in groups.

The students were divided into two groups. The topic given to them was to discuss about the

advantages and disadvantages of demonetization. They seemed to be working well in groups.

Two of them seemed rather quiet and were intently listening to what the others in the group had

to say. I informed them that full participation of the whole the group was the main objective of

such a discussion and also that GD is one of main rounds after an interview. This motivated them

and were seen animatedly involved in the discussion.

Date: 09-02-2017 Time: 3.30 p.m to 4.30 p.m

Topic: Article Review

Goal: Review an article and present the review.

The mentees chose the article of their personal choice. All of them had their written reviews with

them, which they preferred to read. The topics ranged from emoji era to grave issues like

drought. Most of the mentees identified with the author, while one or two seemed to disagree

with the author of the article that they presented. All of the mentees seemed more confident and

comfortable than in previous sessions.

Date: 13-02-2017 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 1.50 p.m.

Topic: Debate

Goal: Identify how the mentees participated in a debate.

Page 45: WALK WITH A SCHOLAR PROGRAMMEMs. Harsha Paul, Assistant Professor in Chemistry. A Review meeting of the internal mentors of IDC and IIDC was done. A discussion on the internal mentoring

The students were divided into two groups previously to discuss about the positives and

negatives of demonetization. The same groups participated in the debate. One group was entitled

to speak about the positives and the other group about the negatives. It was an active debate

where both teams opposed each other. But, the team which presented the negatives clearly won

the debate. The debate brought out their aggressive side, not in a negative way, defending the

topic that they were assigned.

Date: 15-02-2017 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 1.50 p.m.

Topic: Preparing Bio-data

Goal: Help them get acquainted with bio-data format and prepare their own bio-data.

I gave them an idea about writing their bio-data. The new format was introduced to them and

explained what details need to be included and what details need to be excluded in a bio-data.

Mentees were given time to prepare their own bio-data. A discussion was conducted and the

necessary corrections were made.

Date: 16-02-2017 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 1.50 p.m.

Topic: Essay Writing

Goal: Identify writing skills.

The topic: Importance of family in life was given to the students. The mentees were given time

to prepare for the same. They were asked to write the essay not exceeding 300 words. After

writing essays, necessary corrections, spelling and grammatical errors were corrected.

Date: 20-02-2017 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 1.50 p.m.

Topic: Get acquainted with strangers in the campus.

Goal: To rid the children of their inhibitions.

The mentees were given the task to get acquainted with as many people as they can within the

campus within the given 20 minute time frame and report back to me who all they met. The

constraint was to meet new people and not people whom they already knew. It was an exciting

and exhilarating task for them. The shy ones seem to have overcome their shyness and managed

to get acquainted with many people.

Date: 21-02-2017 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 1.50 p.m.

Topic: Word Power

Goal: To introduce new words as much as possible.

The mentees were given different themes (like sports, politics), a different one for every mentee.

A home task was given to them to identify 30 English words related to the theme and also

construct sentences with those words. The mentees shared those words in the session with other

mentees and the unfamiliar words were noted. The sentences constructed with those words were

read out and also asked other mentees to construct sentences on their own with the new words.

Date: 27-02-2017 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 1.50 p.m.

Topic: Film Review

Goal: Movie review skills.

The mentees were given to watch an Oscar winning movie, “Forrest Gump”, as a home task.

They were asked to prepare a power point presentation of the review and present in the class. It

brought out the different views of every mentee, as every mentee comes from a different societal

background.

Date: 08-03-2017 Time: 12.50 p.m. to 1.50 p.m.

Topic: Feedback of WWS

Goal: To know about how WWS has helped the mentees.

Page 46: WALK WITH A SCHOLAR PROGRAMMEMs. Harsha Paul, Assistant Professor in Chemistry. A Review meeting of the internal mentors of IDC and IIDC was done. A discussion on the internal mentoring

It was a discussion or rather a feedback about the WWS scheme. I asked them, if the WWS

sessions have helped them, how it has helped them in anyway and what they thought about the

program. Many of them seemed to have gained more positive effects in their personalities. They

said they had gained more confidence in speaking to others in English language. The mentees

said that they enjoyed the sessions at the same time they were able to take away something from

that session.
