Firefighters had their hands full with a wind driven fire in a 116 year old restored farmhouse. Fire started from heat lamp on rear porch and blustery North winds quickly spread the fire to the rest of the home.

New Waverly Firefighters responded just before 1 PM Monday to a house fire on Mar-ion Ln., just South of the City. Within 5 minutes of the initial 911 call, the first crews were on scene and reported heavy fire and smoke from a 1 story home. Three En-gines and a Tanker responded from New Waverly assisted by crews from Huntsville and North Montgomery County.

Firefighters laid large diameter hose down the driveway and established a rural wa-ter supply operation, but the wind quickly drove the fire into the rear of the home and the attic, destroying the 116 year old restored farmhouse. The fire started on the rear porch near where a heat lamp was in use to provide warmth for the owner’s pets. A brisk north wind and freezing temperatures hampered firefighting efforts.

There were no injuries, but several family pets were lost to the fire.

Washington, DC – Chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX), voted in favor of the Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act, legislation that focuses on warning consumers when the private information they submit to the federal and state health exchange websites has been compromised.

“As I’ve said before, this data hub is a hacker’s dream,” stated Brady. “You have the right to know if your private information is safe. If the federal government is going to require millions of Americans to input their sen-sitive data on a website, then guaranteeing its safety should be a given. But since we can’t do that, at the very least we should let people know when Washington messes up.”

The bill is a response to witness testimony at congressional hearings that uncovered that the data base associated with the exchanges have high security risks. Expert witnesses testified that there has been insuf-ficient testing of the system and that it could be easily compromised. This legislation requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to notify all individuals within two business days if there is a breach in which personally identifiable data is unlawfully accessed. We require this of private companies, so why should the government operate under a different set of rules?” asked Brady. “It’s wrong to force Americans to put their private information on a website and then fail to warn them if there has been a breach in security.”

HUNTSVILLE FAMILY YMCA TOHOST CHAMBER OF COMMERCEBUSINESS AFTER HOURS

The Huntsville Public Library and the Walker County Genealogy Society will host the annual Winter “Genealogy Lock-In” on Sunday, February 9, from 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. According to City Librarian Linda Dodson, the event will be a fun, stimulating chance for genealogists of all experi-ence levels to learn and conduct their own research.

“The Lock-in is a special program for everyone interested in tracing their family history,” Dodson said. “Beginners to experienced genealogists are welcome as our total focus is on genealogy. Genealogy Society mem-bers will be available to give guidance on how to get started, and they’ll share their experiences and help you crawl over any brick walls you’ve encountered in your research.”

Denise Tilson, Adult Programming Coordinator, said all library comput-ers will be made available to genealogy participants. “We hope every-one will come and join us for our annual Winter Genealogy Event – even if this is your first time attempting this type of research,” Tilson said. “The members of the Society are so knowledgeable and such fun to work with - they’re even providing a light lunch and snacks.”

Attendees should bring all their genealogical research paperwork and their questions. “If you’re not sure whether or not to bring the certain information, bring it anyway,” Tilson said. “First-time researchers might be surprised to see just how many sources of genealogical information can be utilized, not to mention the vast collection of resources already available at the library.”

Registration is preferred, but not required, for this free event. To register or for more information, call Tilson at (936) 291-5471.
