Walking on Water Bringing the aquifer to life. A place-based environmental education program for 5th graders in Florida. Immerse in the springs during a field trip to Blue Springs Park. Students will experience the underwater world of the springs and try underwater photography. Lifeguards will supervise our group and masks, snorkels, and cameras are provided, along with guides to identifying springs creatures. This is all free, thanks to grants from National Geographic and Florida Sea Grant. Share with the community. Art exhibits that showcase the students’ photographs and water-inspired artwork will be on display at a public venue. The goal of these exhibits is to highlight the connection between people and the aquifer and allow the students to share what they learned with their families and the community. Create water inspired art. At the end of the classroom visit, students will create a drawing or painting that expresses what they learned during the presentation and field trip. Explore the winding passageways of the aquifer via a 360 virtual tour that places the aquifer at students’ fingertips. During an interactive classroom visit, students will explore the aquifer and touch and try on cave diving equipment. I will also bring a flash drive of the students’ photos from the field trip. All field trips and school visits will take place throughout Fall 2016. We are seeking partner schools for this terrific new (& free!) program — please contact Jennifer Adler ([email protected]). The Floridan Aquifer provides drinking water to 92% of Floridians, yet it is invisible to most people. Beneath our feet, the state’s most significant water supply is often forgotten, yet it is threatened. The goal of this place-based environmental education program is to better connect the next generation to Florida’s unique freshwater resources and help these future caretakers understand where their water comes from and why that matters. The program includes a field trip and follow-up classroom visit, is 100% free (transportation costs are covered!), and is correlated with Florida’s 5th grade academic standards. This program is made possible thanks to support from the following organizations:
