Abimelech. Today we learn how it happened.

12. Who had judged Abimelech and the men of Shechem? (v56+57)

Abimelech had killed his brothers on a stone (9v5). Now

he was killed when a stone was dropped on his head!

The people in Shechem ran to their tower

for safety. But it couldn’t protect them. The LORD is a

strong tower where we can truly be safe. Do you run to

Him?

God. If you love something more than God, it is a god to you.

Abimelech left the country in a mess. Tola

and Jair kept peace in the land. We don’t know much

about them. But you don’t have to be famous to make a

difference for God.

Tola was from the

work.

You can cry to the LORD with words BUT

not from the heart. God sees the heart. He sees if you

We win against the devil by the Word of God and the Blood of Christ

There’s a spiritual battle going on. The

devil is God’s great enemy. He comes with all his demons

and forces of darkness against the LORD. The LORD’s

side is the winning side. Whose side are you on?

We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6v12)

Jephthah’s vow

Bible Reading: Judges 11v29-40

Jephthah is in the list of great men of faith (Hebrews

11v32).

1. Who came upon Jephthah? (v29)

2. Who did Jephthah go to fight? (v29+32)

3. What did Jephthah promise the LORD? (v30+31)

to thank the LORD for victory. So, he promised to offer

an animal sacrifice. He had animals within his gates.

9. Why did his daughter tell him to do it? (v36)

When should we keep our vows to God?

c) Always

d) When it’s easy

e) Never

f) When we want to

We should ALWAYS keep our vows to the LORD

“When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow

and not pay.” (Ecclesiastes 5v4+5)

Is child sacrifice OK with God?

No it isn’t!

Jephthah knew God didn’t allow child sacrifice

(Deuteronomy 12v31; 18v10). Anyone who sacrificed his

children to Molech was to be put to death

(Leviticus 20v2).

He didn’t mean child sacrifice when he made his vow. He

would offer up whatever came out to meet him as a

burnt offering. He was thinking about an animal. The

Israelites offered animal sacrifices.

Did Jephthah really kill his daughter?

Jephthah was very upset when his daughter came out to meet him. He tore his clothes. She was his only child. He loved her. She wasn’t married. He’d

never have any grandchildren.

Some Bible scholars believe that Jephthah didn’t sacrifice his daughter. God didn’t allow child

sacrifice. But he kept his vow by giving her to serve the LORD. She’d serve the LORD at the Tabernacle

all the days of her life.

wouldn’t come when he called them. The Ephraimites

started name-calling. Jephthah said ‘I’ve had it with

7. What word could Ephraimites NOT say right? (v6)

fight each other!
