A Message from Pastor Steve During April we will continue our Lenten journey to Jerusalem with Jesus and the disciples. Much will be revealed about the world and God’s love for it. We hear the fickleness of the crowds, the courage of Jesus to speak truth to power, the last supper with his friends, betrayal, humiliation, suffering and death. Jesus fully experienced the darkness of this world. If ever you wonder if God knows the depth of pain that humans experience we need look no further than the events of Holy Week. Yet we know that from the depths of darkness, that God reveals his love. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13 Martin Luther summarizes what the life death and resurrection means for believers in his second article explanation in the Apostles Creed… I believe that Jesus Christ—true God, Son of the Father from eternity, and true man, born of the Virgin Mary—is my Lord. At great cost he has saved and redeemed me, a lost and condemned person. He has freed me from sin, death and the power of the devil—not with silver or gold, but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and death. All this he has done that I may be his own, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteous-ness, innocence, and blessedness, just as he is risen from the dead and lives and rules eternally. Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus we have forgiveness, freedom and power to love and serve God and our neighbor. We have both an unending and an undying life. May you experience more fully the depth of God’s love for you this April. May you also continue to experience God’s resurrection power to guide you in his light and truth and love now and forever. Pastor Steve

Message from Pastor Jack Friedli

I wish to commend Christ Lutheran for faithfulness in taking Holy Communion to homebound members and others. Pastor Steve has been a faithful Pastor in this ministry with his wonderful and helpful support. I have appreciated the opportunity to serve in this way these past seven years. Holy Communion brings such wonderful assurance to all of us that what we believe is absolutely true, salvation is real, and we have freedom to live our lives in freedom and peace. It also gives us the courage to live our lives with compassion, love, and justice as Christ taught us to live. What a blessing to be able to share these gifts of God’s Grace. Thanks for the opportunity. Pastor Nirmala will now be the Pastor to serve you in this ministry as well as many other ways. I wish her well, and I know that people will love her as they have shown love to me.

“Till we meet again” Pastor Jack Friedli

Thank-You Thank-You Thank-You

Hope Lodge wanted to thank you for the wonderful gifts for Kendra and her daughters from the CLC Sharing Tree. Kendra is a working, single mom, and Christmas is an exciting but also stressful time for her. She often doesn’t have money left over after paying rent and other bills to purchase holiday gifts for her girls. She was very thankful for not having to worry about that this year. She also doesn’t receive or purchase any gifts for herself, so this was a special treat for her. She was able to decorate her bathroom in her apartment. She was very excited about that, and it made her feel at home. Thanks again for your thoughtful gifts and generosity.

First Sunday Prayer Time

On the first Sunday of each month, Pastor Steve will be available for individual prayer and anointing (optional) at the altar railing. Prayers could include physical or emotional healing for yourself or loved ones. Requests at the railing will be kept confidential.

Lutheran Disaster Response

With the Floreks ending their work with SIM, CLC will now be sponsoring the Lutheran Disaster Response for Africa Drought through a monthly donation.

Drought is impacting millions of people globally, with southern and eastern Africa the most heavily affected. Many people are facing low crop production, rising food prices and household food insecurity, and an overwhelming number of those at risk are children. In southern Africa, through the Evangelical Luther-an Development Service, Lutheran Disaster Response is provid-ing emergency aid to Malawi. Through the Malagasy Lutheran Church, we are providing immediate life-saving nutrition as well as livelihood support and psychosocial care, with an emphasis on reaching pregnant women, vulnerable children, people who are differently abled, and the elderly. In eastern Africa, areas most affected have been targeted with emergency response and cash-for-work programs. Together, these will help save lives and improve livelihoods, mitigating the effects of the drought. Gifts designated for “Africa Drought” will be used to assist those directly affected. The greatest impact is being seen in places where Lutheran churches have been at work for generations.

Pastor Steve and Jill were good friends of the McGregors who report the following from Madagascar. CLC recently changed the support it was giving to the Floreks to ELCA Lutheran Disaster response which is responding to drought in Africa including Madagascar.

[Anglican Communion News Service (ACNS] People have been reduced to eating toxic locusts as a result of the food shortages affecting Madagascar, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The Anglican mission agency USPG, which is supporting local Anglican church-es respond to the crisis, say that the extensive hunger has been caused by a combination of drought and erratic rains across the region.

The Bishop of Toliara in Madagascar, Todd A McGregor, said that people in rural communities are so desperate for food that they are eating locusts even though they know they are toxic.

He also spoke about an incident at a confirmation service when a young man who was being confirmed collapsed into his arms as a result of hunger and exhaustion. “It was apparent the famine was

Page 17: Walks With ChristApr 07, 2012  · I believe that Jesus Christ—true God, Son of the Father from eternity, and true man, born of the Virgin Mary—is my Lord. At great cost he has

17

taking root,” he said. “I was informed a number of people had died, and a number were not able to be confirmed because they were in the hospital.

“I saw the devastation a lack of food brings to the innocent. During the confirmation, while I was laying hands on a young adult, he collapsed on me. I wasn’t able to move, and called my priest, evangelists and others to assist the man by pulling him off me. They lifted him off and began to rehydrate him. He was so weak and exhausted from the impact of the famine he had collapsed on me. During the rest of the service I kept looking at him to see if he was OK.”

The World Food Programme, UN, government, and other agencies are providing food aid in Madagascar, with a focus on school meals and supporting farmers.

While the erratic weather is affecting the whole region, Madagascar, Malawi and Zimbabwe are thought to be especially affected because these countries are less robust in terms of the economy, infrastructure and emergency relief processes.

“Reports of communities starving are a reality,” the Rev. Maxwell Kapachawo in Zimbabwe said. “The nation had failed once again to yield enough to feed the nation. Unlike the previous year’s drought, when famine mostly hit the rural population, this time even those in urban settings are struggling to make ends meet.

“There is nothing worse than having a human being go to sleep on an empty stomach,” he said. “It is worse for those who need to take medication every day – which means many people living with HIV may easily default on their antiretroviral medicines.”

George Willow, of the Anglican Council in Malawi, reported that the church had provided 300 of the families hardest-hit by the famine with flour or maize seeds. Alongside immediate support, he said that the church is focused on helping communities to be prepared for future emergencies.

“We are encouraging people to plant more trees, especially along the river banks and in the uplands, to reduce the rate of floods and dry spells in the future,” he said. “And, funds permitting, we want to empower smallholder farmers this growing season with [seeds], mainly those which are drought resistant.”

Equipping all ages to love and serve God and people is a priority at Christ Lutheran Church. In order to encourage families to invest in Bible Camp, we offer camp sponsorships for youth currently in 1st through 12th grade. Most young people remember the great times and the learning experiences of camp for their entire life. Parents have told us that they were amazed at the change in their young person during the bible camp week. The camp sponsorship program works as follows:

(1) CLC will pay 60%, up to $225, of the registration fee at Good Earth Village, our congregational supported camp. Special rates apply.

(2) For other Christian Bible camps we will pay 50% up to $225 or ½ of the camp cost, whichever is less.

(3) All applications made by Tuesday, May 9th will receive financial support. If the total amount requested exceeds the funds available, the amount of support will be reduced on a percentage basis. If funds are still available after May 11th or later, additional applications will be approved on a first-come basis.

(4) All Christian bible camps are eligible for support. Camps such as YMCA & sport camps are not eligible because they are not intentionally designed for Christian faith development.

(5) Verification of registration is required before any monies are paid to the bible camp. You may e-mail your camp registration verification to [email protected]. The church will send a check to the camp for the church’s portion. Reimbursements, if applicable, will be sent directly to you from the camp.

(6) For those with a financial need, assistance is available. Please contact Pastor Steve.

(7) Sponsorships are available only for Christ Lutheran Church members.

The Bible Camp Sponsorship Application forms can be found on the church website at clcbyron.org or on the kiosk in the narthex. Please use one form per child.
