ELL Program
• Our English Language Learning classes are designed to ensure our students have the support they need to become more proficient in reading, writing and communicating in English; and become more successful in each provincial exam courses.
• The ELL program is a placement program, students cannot choose their ELL Classes. We understand each student requires personalized learning and each student is carefully placed according to his or her educational needs.
ELL Program
• At Walnut Grove Secondary, students are not required to take all levels of ELL –they may complete ELL support after they have proved their ability in their English classes and/or depending on their test results at the beginning of the next school year.
• All ISP and ELL students are tested each year to assess ELL level. Our testing dates this year are August 31 and September 5. Student course loads will be adjusted according to their tested level.
• Students are tested for Grammar, Writing, Reading and Speaking Skills.

Developing a Plan
• We know that most of our International Students wish to attend “Big Name” Schools right away, but there are many options available for ELL and ISP Students. In September we have University Fairs showcasing many schools and programs. Please have your child attend as many as possible.
• We encourage students to keep their options open!

1. Language Equivalency – from study in home country to grade 7, 8 and 9
2. Language Challenge Exam
3. Language Program at WGSS up to Grade 12 (depending on area of study)
Language Challenge Exams
• If you have a Middle School report card from your home country showing Language completion for Grades 7, 8, and 9 - that will provide you with Language Credit and a mark for grade 10, 11 and 12.
• If not, Language Challenge Exams are offered in Delta. Sign up with our Counsellor before October 30. The test will be written in January.
• Students can write a Language Challenge Exam through the Delta School District which satisfies the language entrance requirement. However, some institutions, like UBC, will not use this mark in the calculation of your admission average as an approved Grade 12 course.

Summer School?PLEASE CONSIDER:
• Summer School courses are only a portion of the content taught in a full year course therefore if the course is foundational to your future studies, summer school may not be the best option
• Registration for Summer School starts after Spring Break through L.E.C. (Langley Education Centre).
• By mid-May we will have a record of what students have registered for at summer school and students need to come to the Counselling Centre and tell a counsellor what course they wish us to change on their schedule for September.
• Some courses, like Math and Social Studies 11, fill-up quickly
• We will change your schedule before you get your timetable on August 30.
• Please note: All WGSS students must have English on their schedule.
Universities Looking for Well-Rounded StudentsIn addition to meeting academic requirements, applicants are evaluated on a broad range of criteria
• In essay format, students share their experiences:
