STATEMENTOFPHILOSOPHY
Walnut Hills High School, a classical six-year college preparatory high school, is dedicated to the pursuit of academicexcellenceinaculturallydiversecommunity. Academicability,arespectforlearning,andawilltoachievearetoolsforthestudentbodyandfacultyalike.Analyticalandcreativethinkingskillsequipstudentstodrawupontheknowledgeofthepast,toweighthequestionsofthepresent,andtoenvisionthepossibilitiesofthefuture.Involvementinextra-curricularandco-curricular activities provides additional opportunities for pursuing intellectual, social and athletic goals. OBJECTIVES
1. To offer rigorous college preparatory courses, aswell as college level courses, enabling students to graduatewithadvancedstanding.
2. Tosetandmaintainhighacademicstandardswhileprovidingeachstudentwiththeopportunityforastructured,yetindividualized,six-yearsequenceofcourses,therebyenhancingtheintellectualmaturationprocess.
3. TomaintainanatmosphereofmutualrespectinourculturallydiversecommunityandtherebypromotearesponsibleexchangeofideasamongstudentsandothermembersoftheWalnutHillsHighSchoolcommunity.

I. INTRODUCTION
Thecounseling staff iscommittedtoworkingdirectlywithstudentsandparents. Thegoal istoprovideasmoothtransitionfromjuniorhightoseniorhighschoolandultimately,tocollege.
According to the National Association of College Admission Counselors, the most important thing the prospective collegestudentcandoinhighschoolistomakedecisionswhichmaximizefuturepossibilities.Withthatgoalinmind,studentsmustchallengethemselvesacademicallyandpersonally. Thesechallengesmustnotbeequatedsolelywithachievinghighgrades.Students should experience subjects in-depthby selecting awell-rounded curriculum that includes advanced courses in allacademicareasofstudy. Whenpossible,studentsshouldelecttostudyasubjectforfouryearsandoption for“AA”or“AP”selections.
Inadditiontoacademicpursuits,webelieveindevelopingthewholepersonbyencouragingparticipationinextra-curricularactivities. WalnutHillsprovidesopportunitiesinart, music,drama,athletics,andalargenumberofclubsandorganizations.We also believe that volunteering in the community and/or having a part time job provide valuable experiences whileenhancingoptionsforthefuture.
Thisguideforstudentsandparentspresentsrequirementsforgraduation,coursedescriptions,andotherinformationusefulfor planning a program of study atWalnut Hills High School. Each student is advised to use this information to create aschedulewell suitedtopersonal interestsandplans forcollege. Aboveall, studentsmustprepare fora future that involveschange. A program balanced with a variety of academic pursuits should assist students in preparing for the unknowndemandsofthefuture.Optioningandschedulingrequirethoughtfuldecisions. Theallocationofclasstimeisdeterminedbystudentdemandas indicatedbytheoptions. Requests forchanges inprogramsmustbeconsideredas theyaffect the totalschoolorganization.Ifproblemsarise,studentsandparentsshouldconferwithcounselors.
II. ADMISSIONREQUIREMENTSFORCOLLEGEACCEPTANCE
Whenstudents areplanning their freshmancoursesandhigh school program, theyshouldbeawareof theadmissions andscholarship criteria employed by colleges. Thoughtful planning will enable students to present colleges with a positiveportrayalofthemselves.
The most challenging job for college admissions committees is selecting a well-balanced class for each school year.Admissionsofficersviewthehighschooltranscriptascrucial,becauseitdocumentsastudent’sacademicprogressthroughouthigh school. Colleges prefer consistently high academic achievement or an improvement in grades throughout one’s highschoolcareer.Admissionsofficersnotonlyexamineastudent’sgradepointaverage,but alsopayparticularattentiontothespecific courses selected by the candidate. Another related indicator of student success is class rank. Some colleges anduniversitiesmandatethatcandidatesrankinthetoptenorfifteenpercentoftheirclass.ManycollegesareflexibleinjudgingtheclassrankofastudentfromacompetitiveschoollikeWalnutHills,since97%ofthestudentsattendcollegeimmediatelyupongraduationfromhighschool.
Scores obtained on college-entrance examinations are additional indicators of potential success inhigher education. Sincemanycollegesrequirecertainminimumscoresforadmission,studentsshouldtaketheseexamsandtakethemseriously. Inthegrades 9&10 WalnutHillsstudentstakethePSAT.Ingrade 11 WalnutHillsstudentstakethe PSATexam andtheACT. Inthe10th gradestudentswhohavetakenAPclassesshouldconsidertakingtheSATSubjectTests inthatcontentarea.BytheendofthejunioryearstudentsshouldhavetakentheSAT,ACT,andselectedSAT SubjectTestsifrequiredbyschoolstowhichthestudentisapplying.
In addition to the academic profile of a student, colleges express interest in a student’s activities, volunteer communityinvolvement and/orworkexperience. Participation in anactivity for several consecutiveyears often indicates an in-depthcommitment toaprogramandmaybeviewedmorepositively thanengaging inmanyactivitiesovershortperiodsof time.Admissionofficershighlyregardcontinuityofactivities.
III. HISTORYOFWALNUTHILLSHIGHSCHOOL
WalnutHillsHighSchoolfirstopenedin1895asthethirdpublichighschoolinCincinnati.Today,WalnutHillsisanationallyrecognizedcollegepreparatoryschool forgrades 7-12withan enrollmentofapproximately3,000 pupilsand aprofessionalstaffofover140.
Fromthebeginning,thecurriculumofWalnutHillsHighSchoolhasreflectedawell-balancedcourseselectionwithemphasison the influence of the classical past. A curriculum guide from1896 included courses in astronomy,German,Greek, logic,philosophy,politicalscience,andgeology.Today,thecurricularofferingscontinuetoreflectourclassicalheritagenotonlybyspecificcoursesbutalsobypresentingbalancedopportunitiesinacademics,artsandathletics.
Bytheseconddecadeoftheschool’shistory,atrendappearedwhichdeterminedthefuturedirectionoftheschool. Mostofthe graduates were continuing their education by entering colleges and universities. In 1915, for example, 60% of thegraduates opted for higher education. In consideration of this development, Randall Condon, Superintendent of Schools,proposedthatWalnutHillsbecomeaclassical,collegepreparatoryhighschool.By1918theadministrationwascommittedtomakingWalnutHillscomparable,ineveryrespect,tothebestcollegepreparatoryschoolsinthenation.Theprogrambecamesopopularthattheoldbuildingbecameinadequate,andonSeptember8,1931,thepresentbuildingonVictoryParkwaywasofficiallydedicated.TheinspirationforthedesignwastheJeffersonianstyleofarchitectureatMonticelloandtheUniversityofVirginia. Itwasquiteappropriatethat,giventhepurposeofWalnutHillsHighSchool,thearchitectureshouldhavereflectedtheclassicalethos.
ThroughoutitshistoryWalnutHillshasdeterminedtomaintainitsacademicintegrity.In1935,1972andagainin1996,theBoardofEducationreaffirmedthestatusoftheschoolasasix-yearprogramspecializedforcollegepreparation.Asearlyas1926 a systematicmethod of pupil selection was adopted. Today, an entrance test remains as the criteria for admission.Throughthisadmissionspolicy,WalnutHillshasattractedadiversestudentbodywithrepresentationfromavarietyofethnicandsocio-economicbackgrounds.
Throughout its history the popularity ofWalnutHills has necessitated additions to thebuilding. In1960 the annexaddedseventeen classrooms, and in 1976 a fine arts complexwas dedicated. In 1999 a thirty classroomarts and science centerreplacedtheannex. This facilityhasworld-class laboratories, spaciousartstudios,andanexpanded levelof technology. Ahighlightofthefacilityisanoutdoorlearningcenterwithfivebio-bedswithplantingsrepresentingdifferentgeographicareasand a two level aquatic pool. The outside of the center also features a sculpture garden to display artwork. Our AlumniFoundationwiththe16,000alumnifinancedthistwelvemilliondollarproject.
Today,Walnut Hills remains proud of its past and present accomplishments. Currently, the National Merit semi-finalistsnumber20 students.Thesestudentsreceivedlettersofcommendationforplacingamongthetop.5%.ThepassingrateontheOhioGraduation Testis100%.WalnutHillsoffersmoreCollegeBoardAdvancedPlacementcoursesthananyotherschoolinthenation.Classesaverage$27 millioninscholarshipoffersandparticipate inthemostextensiveextracurricularprograminCincinnati.WalnutHillscontinuestopresenteducationalchallengesthatpreparestudentsforcollegeentrance.
Inadditiontointellectualachievement,WalnutHillsbringstogethercapablestudentsandfacultydedicatedtotheprinciplesofmutualandcollectiverespectandtothedevelopmentofgoodcitizenship.Intoday’ssocietyweanticipatethatstudentsmaychange careers six or seven times throughout their lives. Walnut Hills, must, therefore, prepare students for change. Bydevotion to a strong academic college preparatory program that maintains roots in the classical tradition while exposingstudents to the most advanced technology and challenging courses, Walnut Hills will continue to prepare students to belifelonglearnerswhoadapttotheconditionsofa rapidlychangingworld.Asweentertheyear2018-2019,WalnutHillstrulyepitomizesitsmotto,SursumadSummum – “RisetotheHighest.”

ThepurposeofStagecraft is tofamiliarizethosestudents interested intheatrewithsomeoftheaspectsofthe“backstage” operation of a production. Studentswill learn how to operate,manage and facilitate the use of aperformingartsfacility. Thefirstsemesterisdevotedtotheknowledgeandskillsuseful toanyoneworkingonthe technical aspect of a production. Studentswill put their newly learned skills to use in the producing andconstructionoftheannualfallplayandstudentdirectedoneactfestival.Thesecondsemesterwillbedevotedtopracticum.Using the skills learnedduring the first semester, studentswill begiven themore advanceddutiesrequired of a stage manager or the head of a lighting, sound, carpentry, or scene design and painting crew.During the second semester, the construction work loadwill increase tomeet thedemandsof producing andconstructing four main stage theatrical presentations as well as facilitating other school day assemblies.
