Dear Parents and Carers,

The first week back after the holidays has been a busy week, the children have all come

back to school keen to learn and ready for the challenges ahead. We had some exciting

news on returning to school that Miss Quinn got married over the half term holiday, she

managed to keep this very quiet from everyone in school. She is now called Mrs Wright,

this is going to take some getting used to for everyone and I know that Mrs Wright will

respond to Miss Quinn for a while to come. We would like to extend huge

congratulations to her and her husband and wish them all the best for the future.

There has obviously been a lot of discussion in the media regarding the COVID-19

Coronavirus and I am sure many of you are aware that All Hallows’ School in Farnham

is closed as a precaution this week. I would like to assure all parents that the situation is

being very closely monitored by Surrey County Council and I am receiving almost daily

updates regarding the latest information from Public Health England. The advice still

remains that good hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of the disease and we

are encouraging the children in school to wash their hands regularly and to use tissues

when sneezing and blowing their noses and disposing of these in the bin. We did have

several children who went abroad over the half term holiday but none of these children

visited high-risk areas.

This week also saw the start of Lent; children discussed the importance of this time in

the Christian calendar and spent time thinking about the significance of Shrove Tuesday

and Ash Wednesday. Below you will read about the 40 Acts of Lent that we are taking

part in.

On Monday we have a new teacher starting with us, his name is Mr Andrew McLaren,

he will be working across the school with several days a week in Pankhurst Class. This

will release Mrs Wright, who is part of the Senior Leadership Team, to give additional

support and capacity as we continue on our rapid journey of development. Mr McLaren

has a lot of experience in schools, he is looking forward to joining the team and bringing

his ideas around developing the curriculum and supporting the pastoral team in school.

40 Acts of Lent

This Lent we are taking part in the ‘The 40 acts of Lent’. For ten years, 40 acts has

asked a question: What if Lent could be about more than just giving stuff up? What if

it could be a time of radical generosity as well as spiritual discipline?

So far the children have thought about what they have to be grateful for, sat with

different people at lunchtime and today discussed about having a book swap in

class.

Year 5 Code Breaking Day at Ash Manor School

On Tuesday this week, Year 5 visited Ash Manor School for their Code Breaking Workshop, children took part in Maths, English and Computing activities all based

around codes.

Mobile Phones and ‘Smart’ Watches

As per our policy, only Year 6 children with a written contract can bring phones into school, phones must be handed in and will be stored in the office until the end of the day. Children should only be bringing a phone into school if it is absolutely essential.

We have also seen a rise in various types of ‘smart’ watches. With ever changing technology, we are required to review what is and isn’t acceptable in school. We are aware that these watches have the capability to send and receive messages via Bluetooth and some can even make phone calls. These watches have to be

removed for PE and we are concerned about such expensive items in school.

Our current jewellery policy states that children can wear a small analogue or digital watch which has no capacity for connecting to other devices through Wi-Fi,

Bluetooth or any other kind of data.

If children wear this kind of watch into school, it will be treated a mobile phone and

stored in the office for collection at the end of the day by a parent.

Unauthorised Leave of Absence during term time (Holidays)

We want every child in school to aim for 100% attendance, any leave authorised or

not can have a detrimental effect on a child’s learning and progress.

Taking leave during term time will not be authorised. In line with The Education

Regulation and Surrey County Council’s Code of Conduct we will be reporting

absences of 5 days or more from school and you may be fined. The fine is currently

£60 per child, per parent. So if you have one child with two parents you would be

fined £120 for a week’s absence.

Missing sessions from school can have a huge impact on children’s achievement,

there are 175 days a year for holidays and visits and 190 school days in a year

World Book Day, Thursday 5th March - Dress up as your favourite book character!

We are inviting the children to dress up as their favourite book character on Thursday

5th March. We also have an author visiting that day and I know that many of you have

bought her book which the children will receive on World Book Day – the books actual

launch day!

PTFA Movie Nights

The PTFA have arranged 2 movie nights in the before Easter, they are set for Thursday 19th March for Year 3 and 4 and Thursday 26th March for Year 5 and 6. Both these evenings will be from 6pm to 8.20pm. More details will be sent home next week. Year 4 and Year 6 Swimming Lessons

A letter regarding Year 4 and Year 6 swimming lessons was sent home at the end of

last term. Swimming lessons have been booked for the summer term and will start from

week beginning 4th May.

It is important that you return the swimming ability form to us by 27th March, as children

will be put into groups by the swimming school depending on their ability. Please

provide your consent on ParentPay as soon as possible and payment needs to be

made by 30th April 2020.

If you are able to help at all with walking to and from Ash Grange, even as a one off,

please could you indicate this on the return slip.

Year 5 Surrey Get Vocal Visit Please be reminded that Year 5 will be visiting Guildford Cathedral for Surrey Get Vocal next week, on Thursday 5th March. We are still awaiting for a number of parents to provide their consent for their children to attend. Please ensure this is done by Monday, if they do not have permission they will remain in school on Thursday. On the day, please:

- send your child to school with an extra drink and snack.

- send them with their school uniform and shoes in a bag (children can come in dressed up for World Book Day in the morning and change at lunchtime).

- arrive at the cathedral for the performance to parents at 4.00pm

- pick up your child from the cathedral to take them home at 4.30pm Please remember that your child will not be able to attend if they cannot change into school uniform before we leave school and if you cannot collect your child at 4:30 pm or make an alternative arrangement (e.g. with another parent). If another parent or adult is collecting your child we must be informed. We hope you will be able to join us for the parents performance at 4.00pm and look forward to seeing you on Thursday. ParentPay and Dinner Money

Please ensure you check your child’s dinner money account to make sure it is in credit. Children will not be able to order meals and you will be asked to bring a packed lunch into school if dinner money is not in credit. If you have any problems with signing up ParentPay, please contact the school office who will be happy to help you.
