What Is the Human Microbiome? Each of us has an internal complex ecosystem of bacteria located within our bodies that we call the microbiome. The microbiome is defined as a“community of microbes.” The vast majority of the bacterial species that make up our microbiome live in our digestive systems. According to the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Colorado, “the human microbiota consists of the 10–100 trillion symbiotic microbial cells harboured by each person, primarily bacteria in the gut. The human ‘microbiome’ consists of the genes these cells harbor.” (1) Our individual microbiomes are sometimes called our “genetic footprints” since they help determine our unique DNA, hereditary factors, predisposition to diseases, body type or body “set point weight,” and much more. The bacteria that make up our microbiomes can be found everywhere, even outside our own bodies, on nearly every surface we touch and every part of the environment we come into contact with. (2) The microbiome can be confusing because it’s different than other organs in that it’s not just located in one location and is not very large in size, plus it has very far-reaching roles that are tied to so many different bodily functions. Even the word “microbiome” tells you a lot about how it works and the importance of its roles, since “micro” means small and “biome” means a habitat of living things. It’s been said by some researchers that up to 90 percent of all diseases can be traced in some way back to the gut and health of the microbiome. Believe it or not, your microbiome is home to trillions of microbes, diverse organisms that help govern nearly every function of the human body in some way. The importance of our gut microbiome cannot be overstated: Poor gut health can contribute to leaky gut syndrome and autoimmune diseases and disorders like arthritis, dementia, heart disease, and cancer, while our health, fertility and longevity are also highly reliant on the balance of critters living within our guts. Throughout our lives, we help shape our own microbiomes — plus they adapt to changes in our environment. For example, the foods you eat, how you sleep, the amount of bacteria you’re exposed to on a daily basis and the level of stress you live with all help establish the state of your microbiota. Foods that promote inflammation includes:

• Refined vegetable oils (like canola, corn and soybean oils, which are high in pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids)

• Pasteurized dairy products (common allergens) Refined carbohydrates and processed grain products

• Conventional meat, poultry and eggs (high in omega-6s due to feeding the animals corn and cheap ingredients that negatively affect their microbiomes)

• Added sugars (found in the majority of packaged snacks, breads, condiments, canned items, cereals, etc.) Trans fats/hydrogenated fats (used in packaged/processed products and often to fry foods)

On the other hand, many natural foods can lower inflammation and help increase good bacteria in the gut. High-antioxidant foods help reduce gut damage caused by oxidative stress and turn down an overactive immune system while safeguarding healthy cells. Anti-inflammatory foods that should be the base of your diet include: Fresh vegetables (all kinds): loaded with phytonutrients that are

shown to lower cholesterol, triglycerides and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Aim for variety and a minimum of four to five servings per day. Some of the best include beets; carrots; cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and kale); dark, leafy greens (collard greens, kale, spinach); onions; peas; salad greens; sea vegetables; and squashes.

Whole pieces of fruit (not juice): Fruit contains various antioxidants like resveratrol and flavonoids, which are tied to cancer prevention and brain health. Three to four servings per day is a good amount for most people, especially apples, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, nectarines, oranges, pears, pink grapefruit, plums, pomegranates, red grapefruit or strawberries.

• Herbs, spices and teas: turmeric, ginger, basil, oregano, thyme, etc., plus green tea and organic coffee in moderation. Probiotics: Probiotic foods contain “good bacteria” that populate your gut and fight off bad bacterial strains. Try to include probiotic foods like yogurt, kombucha, kvass, kefir or cultured veggies in your diet daily.

Wild-caught fish, cage-free eggs and grass-fed/pasture-raised meat: higher in omega-3 fatty acids than farm-raised foods and great sources of protein, healthy fats, and essential nutrients like zinc, selenium and B vitamins.

Healthy fats: grass-fed butter, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, nuts/seeds.

• Ancient grains and legumes/beans: best when sprouted and 100 percent unrefined/whole. Two to three servings per day or less is best, especially Ansazi beans, adzuki beans, black beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, lentils, black rice, amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa. Red wine and dark chocolate/cocoa in moderation: several times per week or a small amount daily.

THE HILLS AND VALLEYS OF COMMS Burrowye Fire Brigade is 76 years old and Bernadette Cheshire has been the communications officer for 40 years. “In the early days we had two old marine radios which were like CBs,” said Bernadette. “During the 1985 Thologolong fire which changed direction five minutes before it got to us, Noel and I were given CFA radios. “After that, CFA put a base station in the house and gave Noel a portable. Everyone in the valley bought CB radios for their farms but they also get used when the phones go down to talk to neigh-bours up and down the valley. We have a UHF in each of our vehicles as well as four portables and I still have the CFA base station and pager as well as the UHF base station.” With a population of about 10 families in an undulating-to-hilly valley on a back road between Walwa and Albury, communica-tion black spots present a challenge. “Mobile coverage – zip! You might get service six kilometres up the road,” continued Bernadette, “but what you don’t have you don’t miss. Before VicFire, when Noel was captain, we mapped where he could go to get radio contact. “I know by the voice on the other end which radio to answer. I know most of the members’ telephone numbers off the top of my head. “Most farms have paddock names. We have at least 15 with names like Ram Hill, Bull Paddock, Sunnyside, the Old Post Of-fice and Irrigation Paddock. “When an incident is called in, I do a location estimate based on the information and description given.” The couple, with son Wayne, have 95 years of combined service to CFA. Based in Wangaratta, Communications Technical Services Of-ficer Warren Brown recently installed a new CFA radio and aerial at Burrowye which has coverage off a linked repeater from Jin-gellic via Mt Mittamatite and into Corryong, the group headquar-ters. He’s one of 13 field techs who also operate as comms subject matter experts in ICCs. Warren’s patch is usually districts 22, 23 and 24 but, if a comms emergency arises anywhere in the state when he’s the duty officer one week in every eight, “I go for a drive. “It’s all about a brigade’s ability to respond to an incident, so first thing we do is work with them over the phone for a solution. This may be as simple as using a portable radio to talk to VicFire but other times we’ll have to attend to rectify the problem immediate-ly. We do our best to treat all brigades equally no matter where they are in the state.” Warren’s regular workload over an annual 40,000 kilometres travelled includes dealing with electronic fails from fair wear and tear and installation of comms equipment in new and renovated fire stations. Regular preventive maintenance includes visiting CFA’s 120 inci-dent management repeaters on windswept hills. A site like Mt Big Ben near Yackandandah has comms co-located for CFA, DELWP, SES and St John and NSW ambulance services, each with their own rack holding a radio and a duplexer which com-bines a receiver and transmitter into the antenna. For the sites with no mains power, the normal battery system is replaced with solar panels which can operate without sunshine for three weeks.

“We use telemetry to remotely monitor the battery, temperature and other issues in the racks,” said Warren. Members won’t be surprised by his communication tips: “listen before speaking; think before speaking. When you’re on a radio channel, pause, wait for the beeps and then go ahead.” by Leith Hilliard

A THANK YOU FROM THE PONGERS On behalf of the PingPongAThon Team please accept our sincere thanks for the generous support of Walwa World. Your willingness to provide coverage generated substantial interest and built credibility in this event. The Pong @ The Yong was a tremendous bonding event for men of all ages, with plenty of great mentoring conversations happening as table tennis bats were swinging. During the Corryong event $4,712 was raised, smashing our previous totals by over $1500 - a great result for a country community. This money will further the work of organisations in Thailand and Cambodia which are committed to ending human trafficking and sexual exploitation that is so prevalent in these countries. Every cent raised goes to these frontline groups. The support of organisations such as Walwa World enables these events to happen throughout Australia. In the month of October $330,462 was raised, through the participation of 1,765 pongers. As of 15 November, the tally stands at $482,330 with the 2017 goal of $500,000 looking achievable. The enthusiasm was as infectious as in the past two years and we look forward to this event being a regular on Corryong’s calendar. We value your continued support. Again - thank you so much. YOU NEVER KNOW HOW FAR THE WALWA

WORLD REACHES

A few months ago, I wrote an article about how Vyner and I had met Donald Greenhill's cousin volunteering in a church coffee shop in Heidelberg in Melbourne. Yesterday, I received a lovely letter from someone, who prefers to remain anonymous, who had come across the article in the Walwa World (as he/she was "googling old friends and places") and had also found our lovely little cafe in Heidelberg. She was amazed at the coincidence of us both being in that particular cafe as well as having a connection with Walwa. Generously, the author of the letter enclosed a donation for the Walwa World. How wonderful is that! So … whoever you are … we all thank you for your donation, and wish to express our appreciation. Bron Smithwick

Nicotinamide for prevention of BCC and SCC Nicotinamide (vitamin B3) has been shown to have protective effects against damage caused by UV radiation and to reduced the rate of certain skin cancers. Trials of Nicotinamide in patients with previous non-melanoma skin cancers, basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) showed: * Reduction in BCC and SCC by 25% * Reduction in Actinic Keratosis (pre-cancers) by 15% * Reduction in skin dryness These effects only last while people take the medication. When the Nicotinamide is stopped, the benefit may be lost. It is important to take Nicotinamide and not a different form of vitamin B3 called Nicotinic acid or Niacin, which has unpleasant side effects like headaches, flushing and low blood pressure. These side effects do not happen with Nicotinamide. The recommended dose is 500mg twice daily. We recommend Nature’s Own (uncoated), Herbs of Gold (coated) and Blackmores Insolar (coated). Sun protection is of course still essential for all of us, and regular skin checks are vital for people with many previous skin cancers. References Chen AC et al. Book Chooks NAVIGATING THE GREAT RIVER ROAD In 2016 the Upper Murray 2030 Vision Plan was finalised, with two of the five priority projects coming out of the planning process being the creation of the Upper Murray Brand and the delivery of the Great River Road Touring Route. Having heard the community’s ideas and visions for the project through the Upper Murray 2030 Planning process, Towong Shire Council applied for funding to deliver the Great River Road Project, encompassing both the creation of the Upper Murray Brand and the delivery of infrastructure along the route which will be known as the Great River Road. Since the announcement of the Federal Government’s $495,000 Building Better Regions contribution towards the project, Towong Shire Council’s Technical Services Department have evaluated a range of sites along the proposed route to determine a short list of suitable sites. With preliminary investigations now complete, Towong Shire Council along with key partners, the Upper Murray 2030 Interim Community Board and Snowy Valleys Council, is preparing to transition to the next phase of the project; the implementation of the Touring Route infrastructure. As part of this process, Council is forming a Great River Road Reference Group to inform the delivery of the project. The Reference Group will be representative of localities along the Great River Road and will guide the development of associated interpretive material, branding and promotion. Anyone interested in participating as a member of the Reference Group is encouraged to contact Kerissa Heritage, Towong Shire Council’s Economic Development Officer on 02 6071 5100. Delivery of the project will be completed by July 2019.

Our October book Cloud Atlas created quite a bit of discussion. Cloud Atlas begins in 1850 with Adam Ewing, an American notary voyaging from the Chatham Isles to his home in California. Along the way, Ewing is befriended by a physician, Dr. Goose, who begins to treat him for a rare species of brain parasite. Abruptly, the action jumps to Belgium in 1931, where Robert Frobisher, a disinherited bisexual composer, contrives his way into the household of an infirm maestro who has a beguiling wife and a nubile daughter. From there we jump to the West Coast in the 1970s and a troubled reporter named Luisa Rey, who stumbles upon a web of corporate greed and murder that threatens to claim her life. And onward, with dazzling virtuosity, to an inglorious present-day England; to a Korean superstate of the near future where neocapitalism has run amok; and, finally, to a postapocalyptic Iron Age Hawaii in the last days of history. But the story doesn’t end even there. The narrative then boomerangs back through centuries and space, returning by the same route, in reverse, to its starting point. Along the way, Mitchell reveals how his disparate characters connect, how their fates intertwine, and how their souls drift across time like clouds across the sky. Our November book is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doer about a blind girl. In this magnificent, deeply moving novel, the stories of Marie-Laure and Werner illuminate the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. It was winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2015
