New and

Upcoming Events

2019 Tractor Safety Program Walworth, Racine, and Kenosha County Extension will be holding a

youth tractor safety program during the week of June 17-21 at Burlington High School. A detailed schedule and registration can be found at https://walworth.extension.wisc.edu/agriculture/youth-safety/ This 24 hour program meets the requirements of Wisconsin Act 455, which requires youth under the age of 16 to hold a certificate of training in order to operate a tractor or self-propelled implement of husbandry on a public road. The course provides both classroom and hands-on tractor driving experiences designed for youth from the ages 12 to 16. For more information, go to https://walworth.extension.wisc.edu/agriculture/youth-safety/ or contact Jim Versweyveld, Agriculture Extension Educator at 262-741-4962 or [email protected] Wanted

Project Committee Members—Many hands make light work! If you have a talent to share with our 4-Hers, please consider getting involved! Project leaders can serve at the club level, county level, or both, by offering hands-on workshops for members in areas of interest. Contact the Extension office to express interest and get started. Youth Project Leaders—If you are in 6th grade or older, you might consider taking the Youth Leadership Project! Challenge yourself and step into a leadership role on the club or county level. You can choose many different types of roles, from helping one-on-one to leading a large group. If you’d like to specialize your leadership efforts in a project area, you can do that, too, by signing up as a Youth Project Leader when you enroll on 4HOnline. Add the Youth Leadership Project or sign up as a Youth Project Leader by 2019 in order to show off your accomplishments at the fair!

Track Your 4-H Participation If you don’t have a calendar where you’re marking down your 4-H activities on a regular basis, this is a great time to start one! Mandatory project meetings are about to be in full swing, along with a host of other county events that have either just happened, or are happening soon. Make a note of each thing you do in 4-H as you do it, and filling out your 4-H record forms—particularly the Permanent Participation Record (PPR)—will be a whole lot easier in September when record books are due! Attend a club meeting? Mark it down? Club had a guest presenter who talked about wildlife? Mark it down! Attended a mandatory swine project meeting? Mark it down! Playing a trombone solo at your next 4-H meeting? Mark it down. Attended the last three Junior Leaders’ Association meetings? Mark them down! In an effort to make 4-H membership more welcoming and inclusive for all prospective members, 4-H Record Books will no longer be required for Wisconsin 4-Hers to end the year “in good standing.” That said, they will continue to be very important for anyone interested in competing for pins, plaques, scholarships, and state/national/international 4-H trip funding. Details about 4-H Record Book content and layout for 4-Hers wishing to compete will be released in early spring. Be ready when they are by having all of your information in one place.

Welcome to 4-H Softball 2019 Online sign-up opens March 18 on wi.4honline.com and will close April 26. Sign-up early and sign-up

often(or get your friends to sign-up). This year promises to be another fun filled season with the Junior and Senior Leagues. Junior League games will begin June 22 and end on July 14. Junior games are Sunday evening at 6 pm. Senoir League games will begin June 4 and end on July 16. Senior games are Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm. Then we will end the season with a potluck game July 21. A full schedule will be available at/or after the coaches meeting on April 30(6:30 pm at the Elkhorn Public Library). Junior League players need to currently be in 3-7th grade. Senior League players need to currently be in 7-13th grade. Seventh graders may choose to pay in either the Junior or Senior League. For families new to 4-H softball, the leagues are fast pitch with strikes and balls called by a volunteer umpire. The Junior League has gone to coach pitch in the last few years which seems to keep the game moving along quite nicely. The senior League teams have their own pitchers. This is a low-key league where everyone is welcome to play and encouraged to do their best. We teach the fundamentals of the game which includes not only throwing and catching but sportsmanship and encouragmenet to fellow players. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call Darrel Markham

Beef News

On March 16, we had a very successful Showmanship, Fitting, and Clipping Clinic at the fairgrounds. I want to thank Chico and Anna Ganhs, Jared Breber, and Randy Frie for helping with the clinic. A special thank you to everyone who brought cattle, and to the Jeff Reed Family and Cody Miller Family for donating desserts. A big thank you also to Kegley Show Supplies for giving us door prizes. I really appreciate the junior beef committee for helping with set up and working at the clinic. Lastly, I really appreciate how so many of you stayed to help clean up after the clinic. Good Job! Steak Cook-Out Reminders The 9th Annual Steak Cook Out will take place Wednesday, July 17, at the fairgrounds. Every exhibitor is required to help out at this event. We will also need help on Tuesday for set up. It is an awesome time, and the money raised benefits the beef project, like the bedding for the beef barn, DNA testing of cattle, the clinic in March, and so much more. We are looking forward to working with you at this special event. Start getting the word out to all your friends and relatives to mark their calendars! Again this year, we are planning to have a drive through, so we will need even more HELP! Carcass Show Reminder The Carcass Show this year will once again feature a live show. If you are participating in the Carcass Show, your steer must be broke to lead, so start working with your animals.

Merit Award Apps This will be the seventh year that "The Friends of the Walworth County Junior Beef Project" plan to present a Merit Award to a qualifying member. If you are at least 16 years old as of January 1, 2019, and have been in the project for three years or more, please contact Doc Sterken in order to receive an application. Preview Shows If you are interested in getting your animals out to some preview shows, there will be one at the Rock County Fairgrounds, another in Lancaster, WI (put on by UW-Platteville), and the Spring Preview Show at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in June. These are all good shows to help you and your animals prepare for the fair. 4th of July Parade We will once again participate in the East Troy 4th of July Parade. We pass out candy and advertisements for the Steak Cookout. Consider joining the fun! Check your June Newsclip and Junior Beef Facebook page for more information. Best to all of you this project year, Doc Sterken 262-949-5890

Robotics

First Lego League is continuing to work on building a new team for this fall’s competition. First Tech Challenge is looking to form its first team. If you are in 9th to 12th grade and are interested, please come to one of our Thursday night meetings or contact Damian Daniels at [email protected] Robotics meetings are at the Walworth County Fairgrounds Activity Center on Thursdays starting at 6:30 pm on 4/11, 5/9, 6/13, 7/25, and 8/8. Parent Craft time As an added bonus, the robotics meeting will host adult craft time at the same time. Some adults expressed an interest in leather work so we will be borrowing the County’s leather tools and have them available for use at the meeting.

Model Railroad We have had our fist orientation meeting and discussed building a platform. For those of you needing help to build, tools will be available to use for assembly at the next meeting. We also will discuss attaching a foam base to start your building process and shaping your terrain to lay your tracks. Model Railroading meetings are at the Walworth County Fairgrounds Activity Center on Thursdays starting at 7 pm on 4/11, 5/9, 6/13, 7/25, and 8/8.
