Diary Dates Dear Parents
Thank you to everybody who is parking at
Hoopers field and walking up the path to
school. After a relatively quiet period I have
received another couple of concerns from
local residents about parking inappropriately
near the chicanes on The Beanlands (blocking
the road to emergency vehicles). I have been
in contact with the local councillor to see if
Wanborough can be made a priority for
reviewing parking, however there are other
priority areas in Swindon, so there is no quick
fix. Therefore, may I ask everybody to
continue to park safely, be considerate to
others and respect the concerns of local
residents - and of course walk to school
whenever possible.
With our “Let’s All Grow Together” project
into our second year, our focus has turned to
eating more healthily. The children will soon
be completing a wide range of curriculum
activities linked to this topic (see pg. 2). We
are also currently reviewing our related
policies and procedures in school with the aim
of promoting more effectively a healthy
lifestyle / wellbeing for all stakeholders. This
week a number of Wanborough staff
attended a workshop led by Nicola Cook and
Rose White at the school (see attached
letter) which we all found extremely useful
and informative as individuals, educators and
parents. We still have spaces for the parents’
workshop on Tuesday 4th February at 6.30pm
– so please fill in the slip and return to the
school office if you would like to attend.
Before our next newsletter Mrs Marshall will
have started her maternity leave, with her
last day being on the final day of this term. I
know many of you have appreciated the work
she has done in Reception and would like to
wish her well before she starts her new class
of one!

ISSUE
4 Feb ’20
Value of the Month for February is:
F O R G I V E N E S S
Everyone makes mistakes, it’s part of being
human. Sometimes our mistakes hurt
others and then we need to say sorry.
Sometimes mistakes made by other people
hurt us. When this happens we need to be
able to forgive. Forgiveness can be
difficult and costly but without it a new
start is impossible. Talk together about:
A time when you needed to say sorry.
A time you didn’t say sorry but wish you
had.
A time when you had to forgive someone
who had hurt or upset you.
How it feels when you are given a new
start because someone has forgiven you.
Class Assemblies
We would like to invite parents to attend a
class assembly which will be a celebration of
the topic they have been covering and the
work they have been doing. Each assembly
will start at 2.15pm and will last approx. 30
mins. Dates as follows:
Year 1 Thurs 12th March
Year 5 Tues 24th March
Year 3 Thurs 30th April
Year 4 Thurs 21st May
Rec Thurs 18th June
Year 2 Thurs 25th June
SEND Drop-In Session - 31st March
Mrs Wride will be holding a SEND ‘drop in’
session for any parents wishing to meet
with her during the Parents’ Evening on
Tuesday 31st March. You can either call in
advance to make an appointment, or just pop
in on the night. She will be there between
3.15pm – approx. 6pm.
NSPCC eSafety Workshop for Parents
The NSPCC will be hosting a workshop for
parents here in school on eSafety on Fri
28th Feb at 9am. The online world brings
many positives and possibilities, but it’s also
full of risks – and it’s constantly changing.
This workshop will help you to understand
what children and young people do online,
why they take risks and how to respond to
these risks so you can feel confident in
protecting your children. In the meantime
here is a useful link

Thank you to all parents who have set up a
standing order for monthly donations to the
school. The donations have been used to
support all areas of the curriculum,
including books, stationery and materials
and class budgets. Please find attached a
copy of the original letter from Governors
giving some background information. If any
parents are interested in setting up a
regular donation to the school or would like
more information about this please contact

Dobbin Day Service – 13th Feb 1.30pm
'Dobbin Day' is a very special service,
unique to the village of Wanborough.
'Dobbin' is an old Wiltshire word for a small
loaf. The service celebrates the life of 18th
Century local rich land owner, William
Stanley, who left £50 in his will, a huge sum
when he died in 1745, requesting that this
be used to distribute bread to the poor of
the parish, at a service at Wanborough
Church near to the date of his death in
February each year. YR and Y6 will attend
the service. All Parishioners are welcome.
RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch
Last Thursday and Friday all the classes
took part in this event. This ‘citizen science’
project collects data for the RSPB to track
bird population data across the country.
The children had to be quite and still to
ensure that the birds came close enough to
identify. After a while you spot more and
more. We saw blackbirds, robins, dunnocks,
blue tits, thrushes and many more. See a
full report and pictures on the website. A
special thank you to families who loaned
pairs of binoculars for us to use.
Healthy Eating
During terms 3, 4 and 5 each class will be
looking at an element of healthy eating and
will be contributing the work they have
done to our ETwinning project called
'Healthy Food for a Healthy Mood'.
Reception - Discuss healthy meals and
create posters to promote healthy eating.
Year 1 - Design, make and evaluate fruit
kebabs and link this to healthy snacks.
Year 2 - Class assembly on healthy eating
and balanced diet.
Year 3 - Design, make and evaluate
healthy sandwiches and link this to packed
lunches.
Year 4 - Create a balanced diet meal plan.
Year 5 - Research and create traditional
meals with a modern spin.
Year 6 - Create bilingual posters to
promote healthy eating using technology.
In addition to this we have already had
workshops from Fit4Kids who discussed
the importance of a balanced diet and
showed the children how to check the
labels on their food and how to use the
Change4life, sugar swap app.
Support for PTA Events
The PTA are doing an amazing effort in
raising money for the school. We are
looking to further invest in computing
equipment. We are hoping to raise enough
money for 15 extra iPads and 15 extra
laptops to support the Computing
Curriculum and further the children's
experiences. Thank you for your
continued support.
You will all have received a text yesterday
regarding a child who suffered a severe
allergic reaction to nuts in school yesterday.
This is Rosie in Year 3 and with mum and
Rosie’s permission, we would like to share a
photo of what happened to Rosie. This
reaction happened very quickly and resulted
in a visit to the hospital. Had the swelling
have also affected Rosie’s lips/throat the
result could’ve been a lot more serious. We
would like to please remind all parents that
we are a NUT FREE school and for Rosie and
her sister to be in the same vicinity as nuts
or products containing nuts can result in a
reaction like this. Thank you for your
understanding. I am pleased to say Rosie
made a full recovery.

Year 4 Football Competition
Congratulations to the Year 4 football team
who proved to be invincible at a recent
competition at Kembrey Park winning all of
their seven games against other Swindon
schools. The team were full of goals and
solid at the back – Well done to Aiden, Alex,
Wilf, Dan, Ben P, Sonny, Ben S and Tom.
A group of our Year 6 students had a great
time on Thursday at a Swindon schools
hockey tournament. The group worked well
as a team, producing some great play
between them! Some of the goals scored
were fantastic pieces of teamwork, one in
particular starting with a great tackle at
the back, followed by a pass down the wing
and a precise pass completed by a great
finish! All the hard work in the four training
sessions really paid off and they should all
be very proud of themselves for their
performances. The team ended up
undefeated - winning their first two games
and drawing their final game. Well done to
Jake, Alex, Eden, Darcey, Jess, Jack, Toby,
Ollie, Henry and Oscar.
Luke, Max & Fin from Year 3 played with
their Wanborough Wasps U8’s team on
Sunday 26th January winning against
Highworth beating them 10-2 in the cup
final. Well done boys!
Alex from Year 6 recently competed
in a netball tournament for Lawn
Netball Club. Her team came away
with a Gold medal. Well done Alex
and team mates.
Young Carers Awareness Day
On Thursday, we were visited by Ann Giles
of Swindon Carers Centre to talk to us all
about the role of being a Young Carer.
On Friday, we rose awareness for Young
Carers with our 'Wear Something Bright'
non-school uniform day. At break-time we
sold hot chocolate with marshmallows and
lots of cakes and biscuits. Thank you very
much to Mrs Carter in the kitchen for
making biscuits and cupcakes; to Miss
Corbyn's after-school cooking club who
made yummy biscuits and to Wanborough's
Young Carers who decorated lots of
cupcakes, but especially to Molly and Niamh
who made some at home to bring in. Thank
you, also, to Bella and Millie in Year 4 who
both made posters about Young Carers and
these are now on display on the Young Carer
board.
It was really lovely to see everyone getting
so involved in the day which made the
fantastic amount of £327 for Young Carers.
Thank you very much for everybody who
took part and supported the day.
If you feel your child may be Young Carer
please talk to me at school.
Ms Hingley
We love to hear about children’s ‘out of school’
achievements so please email
[email protected] if your child has anything
they would like to share with us.
