WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS MELBOURNE V ICTORY

KICKOFF: SATURDAY 7.45PM @ PIRTEK STADIUM | TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 7.45PM | RADIO: ABC LIVE 7.45PM

A HARD-FOUGHT WIN AWAY to Melbourne Heart lifted Western Sydney Wanderers clear into second

place on the A-League table with an important match against Melbourne Victory looming this week.

After fi ve rounds completed the Wanderers row on the league table reads 3-2-0 for 11 points. Crucially, the Wanderers are the only side with a zero in that third column. Every other side has suff ered a loss in the fi rst fi ve games.

Looking back on the fi xtures already played it will be the draw at home to a young, inexperienced Wellington Phoenix that stands out as the chance gone begging for Wanderers to take more points.

An example of the importance of securing wins at home against lower quality sides in the A-League.

Wanderers stood atop the table for almost 48 hours last weekend after their second straight win on live free-to-air television on

Friday night. It took an 89th minute winner by Kwame Yeboah for Brisbane Roar to take the points against the Mariners and vault them back to the top of the standings.

A little bit of context will help solidify the good start in the minds of Wanderers fans: last season the fi rst fi ve games earned them just seven points and they went on to fi nish with 57 at the end of the season.

The 11 points recorded after fi ve games this year is actually slightly ahead of the expected result of 10 if last year’s total is

to be replicated. This season’s early going suggests a similar resilience when behind on the scoreboard as well as a solid defensive structure.

One of the best aspects of the 1-nil victory against Heart was the goal coming from Shannon Cole.

Firstly it was a welcome contribution from a player getting his fi rst start of the season, indicating a desire and competitive spirit in the wider playing squad.

Perhaps more notably, this was a goal not scored by Tomi Juric, who has become the obvious focal point of the Wanderers attack this year. In a long season it’s not safe to rely on individuals to score all the goals and last week against Adelaide United Juric seemed the only one likely to trouble the scorer.

Other team members on the score sheet is a good development continuing on from where they left off against Sydney FC instead of last week’s one dimensional attacking performance.

Although Wanderers had at least three clear scoring chances against Heart – capitalising on one – they were far from in control for most of the match.

Heart played like a team eager to turn a string of poor results around and out-worked, out-passed and continued to spend time in Wanderers’ half.

Melbourne Victory will pose more of an all-round threat this week and a clearer plan than “get in front and stop them scoring” will

need to emerge if defeat is to be staved off for another week.

Victory have polish in front of goal, especially in James Troisi, who was unlucky not to be rewarded for his hot early season form with a Socceroos call-up.

Archie Thompson and Matt Nichols are also very attacking players and know how to create and score goals.

Put simply, the performance last week won’t be good enough for Wanderers this week against a team looking to rebound

after losing to a 10-man Sydney FC and a side considered one of the real threats to the Premier’s Plate this year.

An area to watch that might decide the match is the defensive midfi eld-pivot positions. Mark Milligan has been wonderful there for Victory this season. His screening and distribution will need to be matched by Aaron Mooy.

This will be a tough one and a draw could be on the cards.

WANDERERS COACH TONY POPOVIC has opened up about dropping inspirational captain

Michael Beauchamp for last week’s game against the Melbourne Heart.

Speaking with the media at Wanderers training on Tuesday morning, Popovic said the decision to drop the 32-year-old wasn’t a performance-based one.

“Michael’s done nothing wrong, he’s

played well, it was just a decision that was made for that game, it wasn’t due to form and he understands that,” Popovic revealed.

“He’s an ultimate professional, he’s a leader at this club. He trained that way yesterday and I’m sure he’ll train the same way today.

“My thoughts on Michael don’t change due to him not being in the team last week. We’ll see what happens this week, we’ll all prepare well and we’ll fi nalise the squad

closer to the game.”In Beauchamp’s place during last week’s

1-0 victory over a desperate Heart outfi t was former Socceroo defender Matthew Spiranovic, who made his long-awaited debut for the red and black.

Popovic said he was impressed with the 25-year-old’s performance considering he hadn’t played a full game of football in more than six months.

“Matthew’s getting stronger, he’s still got a way to go but it was nice to see him get a game under his belt which he enjoyed. The last time he played 90 minutes was back in April,” he said.

“Matty’s still feeling the eff ects of the game and he’s a bit sore today but in time he’ll get that match fi tness and I’m sure we’ll see him perform at his best.”

The only dampener to come out of last Friday night’s win was the injury suff ered to boom striker Tomi Juric, who went down with what appeared to be a serious knee injury late in the game.

“Tomi’s not as good as we thought he would be,” Popovic admitted.

“His knee’s pulled up sore and he’s seeing the specialist. We’re hoping it’s nothing serious but we’re still waiting to fi nd out the extent of his injury.”

ADAM PEACOCK PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY YOUR LOCAL MCDONALD ’S STORES

ADAM Peacock is a respected sports journalist who is currently partof the Fox Sports team covering the 2013/14 A-League season

SIX ROUNDS IN AND things are taking shape nicely. Pressure building in some quarters, questions arising elsewhere,

satisfaction diffi cult to fi nd because there is no such thing as a happy coach before trophy presentations.

Each team has settled into a certain type of rhythm, and it appears Wanderers have gone straight back into the groove of getting results.

By that I mean some teams are playing OK, but getting nothing, but like last season, it seems Tony Popovic (pictured) and his staff are able to get his players to get everything out of whatever performance they come up with. Last Friday night, the woodwork helped against a desperate Melbourne Heart, but

watching the game, you got the impression Wanderers would not be defeated. They wouldn’t allow it, and again the team grows.

Confi dence in those around you and trust in people you didn’t know not all that long ago are like diamonds – so hard to build up, easy to lose and more valuable than most things. That being the case, Wanderers are laced in bling at the moment.

Sydney FC, on the other hand, took the lid off the pressure cooker which had Frank Farina inside. Word was it wasn’t going to be a comfortable week for the Sky Blues hierarchy if Melbourne Victory beat them in the Big Blue.

A superb eff ort with 10 men took the steam out of that argument, for now at least.

But you get the feeling that type of vibe could return before too long should Sydney lapse into their unimpressive ways again.

Brisbane are doing things diff erent, playing a high level of football while coping with injuries to senior players.

Central Coast have got off to a sluggish start, just six points from fi ve games, but the template is there. Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle and Wellington, for diff ering reasons, appear to be clubs in development.

As for Victory, you get the feeling the transition from Ange Postecoglou to Kevin Muscat has a few more bumps to get over, but the quality is there for all and sundry to see. Some of which, you might see on Saturday night at Pirtek Stadium.

KEEP ING UP W ITH COV IC

GOAL keeper ANTE Covic gives us a player’s perspective on the Western Sydney Wanderers

AS A UNIT I think we defended quite well against a valiant Melbourne Heart last Friday night. We were under the

pump for the fi rst 20 minutes but Melbourne never really got to a point where they were getting clear-cut chances because we limited them to shots outside the box. I think we had small patches where we played decent football and, like I say every week, we always create chances and we put one away. We probably had a couple of clear-cut chances to fi nish the game off as well but it was one of those games where we worked hard, battled through and got the win.

There were a number of standouts last week but I was really impressed with Jerome Polenz, who had one of his best games for us. He was up and down, he was solid in defence and he was always positioned in the right spot. I also think Shannon Cole played well in his fi rst start of the season too. He really put his hand up to show the coaches

that whenever he’s needed he’ll be ready, and he even got the goal for us.

We’re back at Wanderland this Saturday night against Melbourne Victory and I’m sure they’ll be hurting a little after their loss to Sydney FC, but having said that, they’ll come out here going for the win. Kevin Muscat (Victory coach) is a very demanding person and he won’t back down.

I always look forward to coming up against my old club, Victory, not out of hatred but it’s just nice to come up against a team you have a connection with.

I was asked a question this week by reader Janette Charles who wanted to know how often we train. Well Janette, we often train six days a week and only get one day off . One of our sessions is actually a double session where we have a fi eld session in the morning and a gym session in the afternoon. The rest of the week is one training session each morning from 10.30am until 12.30pm.

Defence was the key

LAST WEEK ’S ACT ION

WANDERERS 1 MELBOURNE HEART 0

ANOTHER ROUND, ANOTHER THREE points for the seemingly unbeatable Western Sydney Wanderers. Friday

night saw the side travel to play bottom of the table Melbourne Heart at AAMI Park, with the Wanderers looking for three wins in a row against a struggling Heart side rooted to the bottom of the ladder.

Heart started the brighter of the two teams, with Maltese striker Michael Mifsud getting involved right away, setting up Mebrahtu for a header that the striker put wide. The striker then shot over the bar after Massimo Murdocca won possession and played a great ball through, and immediately the Wanderers knew the Heart were out to cause an upset.

The Wanderers responded well to the early pressure from the Heart, and looked to impose themselves on the match in typical Wanderers fashion.

Coach Tony Popovic made a few changes to the side that overcame Adelaide last week, with Shannon Cole coming in for Mark Bridge and former Socceroo Matthew

Spiranovic replacing skipper Michael Beauchamp in the backline. Spiranovic slotted seamlessly into the heart of the defence and looks a quality replacement for Beauchamp or Topor-Stanley.

But it was Shannon Cole who made the biggest impact, capitalising on some very poor defence from the Heart to strike a brilliant fi nish into the bottom corner of the net. Adam D’Apuzzo was given far too much time on the left, and his cross wasn’t handled at all by at least three Heart defenders with the Wanderers gaining a relatively undeserved lead.

It has become a somewhat trademark for the Wanderers, having an ability to weather the pressure of their opponents, then slowly wear them down and delivering a sucker punch. The Wanderers should have doubled their lead just fi ve minutes later when Spiranovic’s header came back off the bar, falling for Brendon Santalab who somehow managed to miss from point-blank range.

Overall it was a typical Wanderers win, bullying opponents out of the game and capitalising on brief periods of dominance to secure the points.

LUKE PRIDDIS

THE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS National Youth League side have suff ered back-to-back losses as they

went down to the Brisbane Roar last Sunday 3-1. The only goal that came from a Western Sydney boot was courtesy of Shannon D’Cunha in injury time. The Wanderers will take on the undefeated Melbourne Victory this Sunday in Melbourne.

The Western Sydney Wanderers have earned themselves a lucky draw in the opening round of the W-League which took place at Marconi Stadium last Sunday.

After dominating possession and scoring opportunities for most of the game the Wanderers trailed Adelaide United 1-0 until a goal in injury time by Catherine Cannuli saw the home side equalise and share the points with the visitors.

Following their draw, the Wanderers sit in fourth position with a match-up against Canberra United this Sunday in the nation’s capital.

Still on the W-League, my sincere congratulations go to wonderful footballer Heather Garriock who is Western Sydney’s new captain for the 2013/14 season.

Garriock is western Sydney through and through having been born and raised over in Campbelltown in south west Sydney. She’s also been a huge star on the international circuit, playing in more than 100 games for the Matildas.

This is Garriock’s fi rst season as a Wanderer and she was taken a bit by surprise

last week when she was announced as club captain: “Being the captain of any side is a big honour and to do it with the Wanderers I’m very, very fl attered. Growing up around here we didn’t get given things on a platter, you need to work hard and fi ght for your position – I’m really glad to be playing for Western Sydney”.

Make sure you do yourself a favour and get out to a Wanderers W-League clash this year. They’ll be playing at Centrebet Stadium on December 22 against the Newcastle Jets.

This week’s Wanderers super fan is none other than four-year-old Chloe Luczak from Emu Plains. Chloe’s favourite player is Wanderers striker and local junior Mark Bridge, she loves dancing and singing along with the RBB, and most of all, loves dressing up in her Wanderers gear.

If you would like to be pictured in my column, simply send a pic of yourself in your Wanderers gear to [email protected].

Where should the A-League expand to next? That is the big question fans and football bosses are mulling over right now. With the enormous success of the Western Sydney Wanderers, the FFA now knows the right formula to make a new club work.

I overheard recently that a Tasmanian A-League franchise could very well be on the cards in the not too distant future.

But there’s also strong interest from other cities across Australia and even New Zealand including Geelong, Wollongong and Ipswich.
