Calling local residents...The Wanstead Village Directory is proud to support local businesses and we encourage you to do the same. Our High Street is proof enough of the individuality that independent retailers can bring to a town. Help us help these businesses by mentioning the Wanstead Village Directory when responding to adverts.

The Wanstead Village Directory is published monthly by Marquis IT LTD and distributed to homes in Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook Additional copies are available from local public service locations and shops on and around Wanstead High Street

Marquis IT LTD cannot be held responsible for any errors or omissions, or endorse companies, products or services that appear in this magazine

A note to businesses...If you are a business that is based in Wanstead, or has a presence in the local community, then we can help you get your message across to our readers. The deadline for inclusion in the February 2013 edition is 24 January 2013. Please call to request a media pack.

Lee Marquis, Editor

Welcome...Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? A line many of us will have rattled out, or hummed, to the tune of Roud #6294 to welcome the start of 2013 Those who stop to ponder the opening question posed in the Robert Burns poem will no doubt appreciate that it is intended to be rhetorical; friendships of the past should indeed be remembered A lot can be learned from the past, and so instead of just expanding our online social networks with colleagues of yesteryear, the sentiment of the Scots poem should perhaps be extended to encourage an appreciation of our ancestors – the old acquaintances we were never able to meet directly, if you will

If knowledge of your own family history extends back little more than two or three generations, leaving your family tree looking little more than a sapling, then there is plenty of help available to assist you in progressing the search Not least is the guidance available from the East of London Family History Society, who meet monthly at Wanstead Library (see page 46)

Another local community group have been producing their own family tree of sorts, one which establishes a chronological documentation of the owners of Wanstead Park from 1086 to 1882 I am pleased to be able to present this unique insight into Wanstead's history – prepared by The Friends of Wanstead Parklands – through a series of articles in this and future issues of the Wanstead Village Directory (see page 34-35)

The natural history in Wanstead park is also worthy of study in its own right However, we need not look back over the centuries to appreciate the life and times of our local flora and fauna; the diversity and beauty is plain to see over the course of just one year (see pages 14-15) From winter survival, new life in spring, summertime growth and autumnal changes, how much will you witness during 2013 in what English Heritage have described as 'one of the most significant parks in England'?

A public consultation will be launched this month as the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) set out their Police and Crime Plan for London, with a view to closing front counter services at some local police stations "A key part of the Mayor's role is to produce a Police and Crime Plan, which sets out the crime reduction strategy for London for the next four years," explained a spokesperson for MOPAC "This includes plans for the MOPAC estate and Wanstead

Police Station, and how this fits into a wider strategy for how the Metropolitan Police Service will be held to

account" Consultation will run from 7 January until 4 March, with a visit from the Deputy Mayor of London on

11 February at Ilford Town Hall To complete a questionnaire, visit www.london.gov.uk, or call 020 7207 0114

Public consultation on the future of local police services

Evergreen supportRedbridge Council's Conservation Advisory Panel last month gave their support to the Wanstead Society's planning application to turn Evergreen Field on Wanstead High Street into an open space for community use The application will now go before the Regional Planning Committee West this month To date, the owner of the field, Dalco Developments, have not submitted their own application, but had hoped to build a mixture of residential and commercial units on the site, with a smaller portion of the land left for public use

Local primary schools fared well in league tables published by the Department for Education last month In Redbridge, 82% of Key Stage 2 pupils achieved a Level 4 result in both English and Mathematics – an increase of seven percentage points on the results in 2011 and three points above the national average Councillor Alan Weinberg, cabinet member for children's services, said: "Our primary school pupils have raised the bar for Redbridge They and our hard-working teachers should feel proud"

Church invites residents to be immortalised on artwork

To commemorate the restoration of the church roof, Christ Church are inviting residents to have their name, or that of a loved one, inscribed on a piece of artwork The three-dimensional work – which echoes the shapes and colours of the roof, but also forms the shape of a

cross – was created by artist Janet McKay and will be on permanent display in the church There is room for 500 lines to be inscribed on the slate faces of the design, with inscriptions charged at £20 per line (see page 21) Funds raised will go towards the £260,000 repair costs incurred

Capturing the art of shopping and the beauty of winter

Members of Art Group Wanstead are currently exhibiting a selection of wintry- and New Year-themed artwork at The George pub in Wanstead They include Naomi Fenton Rayman's Shop 'Til You Drop acrylic painting, which depicts the spirit of holiday shopping and the January sales

The artwork will be on show upstairs in the Wetherspoon pub throughout January The art group – which is open to both professional and amateur artists with strong links to Wanstead – will also organise the area's fourth annual art trail later this year

Since November 2011, sustainable transport charity Sustrans has been working to encourage young children in Wanstead to cycle, with hour-long weekly sessions for two- to five-year-olds from Wanstead's Zeeba Day Care The charity is now keen to expand the scheme to other

day care providers in the local area over the next 12 months "Cycling from an early age builds habits that last a lifetime, and it is exciting to be working with the future generation of healthy, active cyclists," said Sustrans cycling officer Emilie Charlesworth Call 07584 078 744

School's 'West End-quality' production of Guys and Dolls

Allied Irish Bank vacates Wanstead High Street offices

The early 18th-century Manor House at 129 High Street, Wanstead has been vacated by its most recent tenants, Allied Irish Bank, who have had an office there since 2006 "We have taken the decision to close this office as an increasing number of our business customers are using our online

facilities rather than their branches, or their relationship manager visits with them at their premises," explained a spokeswoman The red-brick building was formerly a Conservative Club and features a bust at the front of Sir Winston Churchill, MP for the area from 1924 to 1964

Students from Wanstead High School staged an uplifting performance of Guys and Dolls last month, following intensive rehearsals four nights a week since last September "All I can say is amazing! I take my hat off to everyone for getting it all together and producing

such a wonderful performance I was overwhelmed to see some of our students with speech and language difficulties being able to overcome these and achieve a sense of belonging in this wonderful cast," said Ms Efthymiou, head of learning support at the school

Wanstead's long-haul travel agent Escape Worldwide rounded of their most successful year to date by scooping two travel industry awards last month Long-haul tour operators Kuoni and Travel 2 announced the Cambridge Park-based team as Specialist Longhaul Agent of

the Year 2012 and Top Asia Agent 2012 respectively "The Far East has always been an important destination to us and we've had a great year for holidays to the region," said Escape Worldwide's Darren Vurnum "It's a fantastic part of the world and we can't get enough of it!"

I moved to Wanstead a year ago having never set foot in the park. I was born in Epping and have lived in Woodford and

Loughton, so the forest has always been a part of my life. I picked up a camera two years ago and started a photoblog of my experiences in Epping Forest, but I hadn't explored Wanstead Park until I moved here – I wasn't disappointed.

I assumed the park would be like most London parks, with a scattering of benches, a few trees and far too many pigeons – I couldn't have been more wrong. Within 10 minutes of my first visit I had witnessed a heron, a cormorant drying its wings and parakeets. From the bluebells of Chalet Wood in spring; the sunbathing red-eared terrapins in summer; autumn's dead leaves and bizarre fungi; and the mink scampering over the ice during winter – Wanstead Park is truly magnificent in every season.

Every visit is a unique experience, so I always make sure I bring my camera to try and capture the wonders of the park. I am a self-taught photographer and you don't need an expensive camera to take shots of the scenery and wildlife. I was using a digital compact when I first started my blog, but have since moved on to an SLR camera. Although the quality of my photographs are better now, I was amazed at some of the great shots you can get with a reasonably priced compact. You just need a lot of patience – and a bit of luck – when it comes to shooting wildlife.

In the space of one year I have witnessed kestrels, kingfishers, bats, toads, grass snakes, dragonflies, wood mice, green and great spotted woodpeckers, great crested and little grebes and little egrets, as well as the more common wildlife that you would expect to find. So the next time you take a walk through the park, stop and take a good look around, as you never know what you might find.

my wanstead parkWanstead Park offers something new to see every season Local amateur photographer Christian Moss presents a selection of his images to illustrate the visual delights in store for the year ahead

Unsurprisingly the 150-year-old building of Christ Church had been showing its age recently – the roof valley gutters

have let water into the church from time to time; stonework in the walls had deteriorated; and damp patches could be seen in parts of the building. The west window looking over the green towards Spratt Hall Road was in poor condition, where repairs to wartime bomb damage were beginning to fail. The chancel roof had been left partially re-slated, a job that needed finishing when funds became available.

The programme of repair work has taken about six months to complete During this time the church has been completely shrouded in scaffolding so that a massive temporary roof could be built to keep the building wind- and water-tight Once the temporary roof was in place, the valley gutters between the nave and the two side aisles were re-formed and re-lined along the length of the building Stonework that had deteriorated was removed and replaced The west window was also restored and the northern slope of the chancel was re-slated

The finishing touch was to add two crosses to the gable ends of the nave It is known from photographs that these were in place during the early years of the 20th century, but it is believed they were removed when stonework deteriorated and they became unsafe

The cost of all the repairs amounted to approximately £185,000, and when surveyors' fees, VAT and other costs were added, an overall total of £260,000 had to be found

The Parish was delighted to secure a substantial grant of about £155,000 from English Heritage for the work, and equally delighted to receive grants from other organisations amounting to £15,000 VAT payable on the work (but not on surveyors' fees) is expected to be refundable under the government's Listed Places of Worship VAT relief scheme Nevertheless, the Parish has itself raised in excess of £40,000 so that the work can be completed This has been achieved through a

mixture of direct donations and fundraising events People have worked very hard and have been extremely generous

When the scaffolding and temporary roof have been removed (within the first few months of the year), the contractors will have to do some further work to the drainage system, but it is expected that this will be completed quite quickly It will then be exciting to finally see the church with the two crosses in place as a very visible reminder of all the work done

Roof overheadsAs work to restore the roof of Wanstead's iconic 150-year-old Christ Church nears completion, David Ranger takes a look at the repairs – and costs – that have been made thus far

one in four allegations of rape are first reported at a police station, so it is vital to maintain easy public access to the

police. Yet our police stations in both Wanstead and Woodford are now threatened with closure.

The Metropolitan Police has a new Police and Crime Plan for London As directed by the Mayor, this must save more than half a billion from a £34bn budget by 2015 It's not all bad news: there's a strong focus on maintaining the number of front-line policemen and women; more resources will be devolved to Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs), including, for the first time, the ability for them to investigate some crimes; and given Redbridge's growing population, the borough has a case for a larger share of London police resources

The working partnership between the police and the council is now healthy and strong, led by my colleague Councillor Shoaib Patel Redbridge actively supports additional police resources by funding the Redbridge Community Police Team When the suggestion that our neighbourhood police teams be relocated to Barkingside was made, we won an important promise from our Borough Commander that the SNTs will continue to be based in the west of the borough

Nevertheless, the outlook for the front counters appears grim, because savings will fall on support services and overheads, including £91m earmarked from property In draft proposals based on 2010 usage data, 65 of London's 136 counters are recommended for closure, including Wanstead and Woodford Furthermore, Barkingside is proposed for closure at night, with only Ilford remaining open 24 hours a day

All of this will be mitigated by creating six or seven 'local access points' across Redbridge, in public buildings such as libraries, or other places that people visit, such as supermarkets The police will be available at advertised regular times each week, presumably staffed by SNTs within their existing resources Last month, my colleague on the GLA, Caroline Pidgeon, won a promise that these access points will open before any counters are closed

Public consultation on these plans will run from 7 January to 4 March, including a visit by the Deputy Mayor of London Stephen Greenhalgh for a public meeting in Redbridge on 11 February

The Council is working hard to contest these plans, both publicly and through lobbying In particular, we are alarmed at the prospect of the west of Redbridge having no police stations at all I do welcome the greater accessibility through the proposed new access points, but these would not make up for losing our local permanent front counters I'd also prefer to see access points in trusted public buildings – where there is some privacy – since people clearly may not be happy to report crimes at a supermarket or coffee shop

Finally, although the budget set by the London Mayor forces hard choices on the police, the Mayor is of course able to move funds between all of his budgets He hasn't had difficulty identifying funds for various high profile schemes when he has wanted Therefore, the cross-party campaign must focus both on influencing the decisions the police make within their proposed budget and also press for police stations to have higher priority within the GLA A high level of support from local residents and businesses will be both helpful and essential

Police plansAs a public consultation on the future of Wanstead Police Station is launched, Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council and Wanstead resident Councillor Ian Bond shares his thoughts on the issues at hand

Councillor Ian Bond sits for Roding ward, leads the LibDem Group and is Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council For the consultation, visit www.london.gov.uk or call 020 7202 0114

East London Humanists was formed in 2012. We are a partner of the British Humanist Association, which is supported

by well known figures such as Stephen Fry and Richard Dawkins. Many of our members live in the Redbridge area and we meet regularly at Wanstead Library. The aim of our group is to promote Humanism in east London and to become a focus for the many ethical, but non-religious, people who live in the area. Our motto is 'good without God.'

But why start a group for non-religious people? We do not, contrary what some people may think, sit around knocking the religious We are happy for people to practise their own beliefs as long as this does not intrude unduly on our own lives

A principal purpose is to provide an opportunity to talk freely and exchange ideas with like-minded and free-thinking people Those who attend our discussions often talk of their inhibitions, or even anxieties, about expressing their non-religious beliefs at work or with neighbours and friends Our meetings also serve to educate and to stimulate discussion on a variety of ethical and philosophical issues of concern to the religious and non-religious alike For example, one recent meeting concerned faith schools and whether they are divisive for our communities Our January meeting on religious freedom should also be of great topical interest for people of all beliefs

Corinna Fergusson, our next speaker, is a lawyer with Liberty, the civil rights group Corinna has acted and advised in a number of high-profile cases involving religious freedom in the workplace These are not easy issues Most will agree that people should be able to express their belief by wearing symbols, but what if others find those symbols offensive? What if a person's beliefs, say on gay marriage or abortion, clashes with their job as a registrar or a nurse?

There has been a lot of controversy over the wearing of the burka This country has not gone down the same route as France, where wearing the full-face burka in public places is banned, but what

would be the view here if a judge, head teacher or newsreader chose to wear one?

This month's meeting is entitled 'Religious Freedom versus the Secular State' We are, in fact, a long way from being a secular state For example, there is still an automatic right for bishops (all male) to sit in the House of Lords However, these issues are key to the nature of a modern, multicultural society

In trying to find answers to these and other questions, humanists look to human values These are the values that have evolved over thousands of years and form the basis of a decent civilised society An example is the so-called 'golden rule', common to most religions and beliefs, of not doing to someone else that which would be harmful to yourself In fact, the Human Rights Act is itself man-made rather than a gift from a God The holy books, largely very old, have significant gaps in setting out a clear guide for modern ethics and issues, such as tolerance for other beliefs This is not to mention problems such as over-population and global warming

Good without GodThe East London Humanists will lead a debate on religious freedom versus the secular state at Wanstead Library this month Chair of the group Paul Kaufman outlines the issues up for discussion

The free-to-attend discussion will take place at Wanstead Library on 28 January at 730pm Visit www.eastlondon.humanist.org.uk

Wanstead Village Directory34

The origins of the park as we know it go back to 1509,

when about 300 acres of the old manor of Wanstead were first enclosed. Best known as the remnant of the great landscaped garden surrounding Wanstead House, the park has a much longer history. Through archaeological finds it has produced evidence of occupation dating from the Late Bronze Age, and extending through the roman and Mediaeval periods.

Wanstead is a Saxon name, though its meaning is uncertain. There is general agreement that "stead" comes from the Old English "stede", meaning "place", "house of" or "small settlement". However, "wan" could be derived from "wan" meaning white; "wen" meaning a hill; "waen" meaning a wagon; "Woden", the Norse god; or even some personal name.

Robin Fleming's Britain After Rome has some interesting discussion of Saxon place names. She cautions that a high proportion of them are relatively late, as the establishment of the manorial system involved the creation of many new settlements and the disappearance of older ones, along with their names. In Essex and East Anglia, the Viking invasions created further dislocation.

In the case of Wanstead, there is no documentary record of its ownership – or even

existence – during the Saxon period. The manor first emerges into the light of history in the Domesday Survey, compiled in 1086 on the orders of William the Conqueror to assess his new realm for taxation.

According to Domesday: "St. Paul [i.e. the See of London] held

Wanesteda, now Ralph son of Brien [holds it] of the Bishop for one manor and one hide. Then [i.e. in the time of Edward the Confessor] one plough in demesne; now one and a half. Always [i.e. then and now] two ploughs of the men, and three villeins. Then seven bordars ; now eight. Then two serfs; now none. Wood for 300 pigs. Now one mill. Always one salt-pan. And it is worth 40s." (Domesday Book, volume 2, fo. 9b.)

Perhaps at this point it would be appropriate to explain what a manor is. Since land tenure reforms of the 1920s, the manorial system in England survives only in the form of certain vestigial property rights. However, the manor was for centuries the basic unit of land ownership and local government in rural areas. It was characterised by the vesting of legal power and economic rights in a lord, who was supported from his own direct landholding plus the obligatory contributions of the various categories of tenant under his jurisdiction. These might variously be payable in labour, produce or money. If the lord owned a number of properties he might only visit them rarely, with the day to day administration being in the hands of a steward.

In the first of a series of monthly articles looking at the owners of Wanstead Park through history, Friends of Wanstead Parklands member Richard Arnopp picks up the story from the first documented record of Wanstead's ownership in the Domesday Book

During the mediaeval period, Wanstead passed through various hands. A full account of its complex ownership history may be seen at British History Online, but many of its owners are shadowy figures, hardly more than names. Also, little is documented about occupation or land use in Wanstead during this time, and even the location of the house and other manorial buildings is not certainly known.

By the late 12th century, Wanstead was in the hands of Hugh de Hesdin (or Hosdeng or Hoding), a member of a family which held extensive estates in Essex during the reigns of Henry II and Henry III. The heiress of this family, Alice, became the second wife of Sir William de Huntercombe, of Huntercombe End, Oxfordshire. The son of this marriage, Thomas, was born in 1258, and eventually succeeded to his mother's inheritance. His descendent John de Huntercombe was described as the last of the family (presumably, in the direct male line) to hold these estates. He died in 1383.

By the 15th century, some of the people who owned Wanstead are beginning to come to life as recognisable individuals. In 1427, Robert Tattershall, draper and alderman of London, dishonestly secured a conveyance of the manor from one William Rous who was a descendent of William de Huntercombe. As Tattershall was well aware, Rous had no capacity to enter into such a transaction as the manor was entailed on Rous and his heirs and not on him alone. However, on his deathbed and overcome by remorse, Tattershall required his son John to set matters to rights. It appears that by 1437, John had reached some form of agreement with all the people concerned, which secured the manor to himself in fee. He died in 1447 and was succeeded by his son, also John, who died without issue.

Sir Ralph Hastings (c.1440-1495) of Harrowden, Northamptonshire acquired the Wanstead property in right of his second wife, Anne, daughter of John Tattershall the elder. A significant figure, he held a variety of offices, of which the most colourful was custodian of the lions and leopards in the Tower of London. A Yorkist, he was created knight banneret after the Battle of Tewkesbury. Under the Lancastrian Henry VII, Hastings was deprived of some of his positions and reportedly only narrowly escaped the fatal charge of treachery with Perkin Warbeck in 1489. Hastings died in 1495, and his

widow sold the estate to Henry in 1499 for the sum of £360.

In Winter King: the Dawn of Tudor England, Thomas Penn states that Henry's rapacious officials used the example of that monarch's acquisition of Wanstead as a threat to secure compliance from one of their victims, a haberdasher named Sunnyff. It seems that this man, from whom they were attempting to extort a fine of £500, was told that: "…when Henry had coveted Wanstead manor, he had victimised its owner, Sir Ralph Hastings, until Hastings sold it to him. Hastings had died of the stress – the implication was that Sunnyff would too."

Although this cannot be correct as presented – Hastings had been dead four years when Henry obtained the property – it may still contain a grain of truth. Henry was notoriously ruthless and acquisitive, and it is not implausible that strong-arm tactics were used against Lady Hastings, the widow of a man whose loyalty to the new Tudor regime had been suspect.

The friendly Flamingo Fairs in Wanstead Library's building have been growing in popularity, and I am now considering

gradually introducing a wider range of fairs and events to add greater variety for local residents. People go far and wide to visit a massive range of specialist and themed fairs, so I'd love to know if there is a particularly strong demand for any kind of events not already catered for.

I want to keep the fairs as easy-to-visit events that help foster a community spirit, and add a changing feast of ideas to the regular businesses in the High Street, creating an extra reason to shop in Wanstead Currently they are held about once a month

The fairs started up in Wanstead Library's Churchill hall, Spratt Hall Road, a year ago, with art, design, craft and vintage goods and the occasional artists' attic-clearance events They followed on from fairs in The George pub, which I organised to get Art Group Wanstead off the ground

However, the flamingo name was only introduced a few months ago, to make our fairs more instantly recognisable So why a flamingo in Wanstead? Apart from it being a colourful, feel-good motif, the flamingo is a distant cousin of Wanstead's heron, which Art Group Wanstead use for its logo (as do Wanstead High School and Wanstead Rugby Club) The fairs are a way for artists and designer-makers to introduce their work to the public, so the heron and flamingo can happily wade in together

Various creative people can use Art Group Wanstead or the fair as a platform for their ideas

It can be a first step for a budding entrepreneur or useful for someone who wants judge the reaction of customers Most of our fairs seem to attract stall holders and customers who appreciate creativity and design

Stall holders don't have to be artists or members of Art Group Wanstead, but artistic stall holders have often enquired

about joining the group once they've realised we organise an annual trail, allowing them to link up with fellow artists, crafts people and artisans

The flamingo flockWhat kind of fairs would you love to see in Wanstead? Donna Mizzi, the organiser of Flamingo Fairs, is asking local people to reveal their preferences for future events

The next Flamingo Fairs will take place on: 12 January – the January sale fair; 9 February – Valentine's vintage and more fair; and 9 March – fair in time for Mother's Day (free entry from 11am to 4pm) Send suggestions for future fairs to [email protected]

In this talk I will set out to show how people tracing their family history can use secondary sources to progress their research when they

are unable to find details of a principal event – birth, baptism, marriage, death or burial – in the life of an ancestor. Using examples, I will initially be looking at the possible reasons why any event lies undiscovered, including the mishearing, misspelling or mistranscription of names, and finding suggestions for variants in books and on the internet. Sometimes nicknames and middle names were used for the record of a person, so these too must be considered, especially as forenames may have been interchanged.

One useful secondary source included in the discussion will be registers of electors, following the (Electoral) Reform Act of 1832, so I will examine which members of the population were entitled to vote over the years to assess the chances of finding an ancestor in these lists Land tax assessments – which are records of owners and occupiers of land and buildings, and which survive from 1780 to 1834 – are important too Together with other returns such as taxes on hearths, windows and hair powder, these lists – along with militia returns, muster rolls, borough burgess rolls, tithe apportionments and trade and street directories – enable you to establish where a person was living, year by year, over a period of time Also, if the ancestor you are researching has a brother or sister, a worthwhile strategy is to try to find events for one or more of these siblings, which may provide a clue to finding the missing event for your ancestor

I shall then examine, in detail, what sources can be used to assist in finding a baptism, including: bishops' transcripts of parish registers; school admission registers; registers for Jews, Catholics or non-conformists; workhouse registers; hospital and prisons records; and newspaper and magazine announcements Similarly for marriages, I will explore the use of marriage licence indexes, other marriage indexes and the possibility of a clandestine marriage at, for instance, the Fleet Prison or Gretna Green

To assist in finding a death or burial, in addition to the previous sources mentioned for births and marriages, I shall examine the use of the indexes of overseas, consular and army death returns; cemeteries, death and funeral notices; memorial cards; wills and administrations; death duty registers between 1796 to 1903; and memorial inscriptions from gravestones in burial grounds

If a person just disappears from the scene, I shall be suggesting possible reasons for this that provide pointers as to the records that may prove fruitful to the search These reasons may include: joining the armed services; emigrating; becoming a prisoner; marrying away from home; being removed from the parish; or simply dying

I hope to demonstrate that with inspiration, diligence and patience, not to mention a little luck, all will be revealed as you progress the research into your family tree

At the East of London Family History Society's first meeting of 2013, Eric Probert will be explaining how to overcome the obstacles of missing links when tracing your family tree

Eric Probert's presentation will take place on Wednesday 23 January at Wanstead Library from 7pm Visit www.eolfhs.org.uk

What is home? Is it a place or a feeling? For me it's more of a feeling, a sense of belonging – something that I've

found in Wanstead after a long period of moving from place to place.

I grew up in London and went to university in Exeter, where I studied music After that, I moved around a lot Michael, my partner, and I lived out in Colchester for a while, but we felt isolated from family and friends When we came back to London we rushed things, and we ended up in Leytonstone It was very multicultural, which I loved, but there was not much to do and its thriving rental market means that people quickly move on, or get moved on Too often you'd see the entire contents of houses dumped in the street I wanted to get to know people and to put down roots, but I couldn't see it happening there

We soon found ourselves coming to Wanstead most mornings for breakfast and to mooch around the shops The more time we spent here, the more we realised how good it is: there are restaurants and cafes, there's the tube, there's loads to do on your doorstep without having to travel and the area is thriving, even during a recession Many businesses seem to have been here since the Sixties, as you can see from the dry cleaners and the corner shop There's no need for them to modernise – they know their market, and people know what they do and where to find them

People tend to buy here and stay here I can see how you could grow into it as a person and how I might end up, which I appreciate – I like some idea of what tomorrow might bring There are good schools, it's child-friendly and the older

people seem happy, too For me, that's really stimulating in terms of songwriting and getting creative ideas

My piano room faces the street and I love to sit in there doing nothing, watching the world go by, observing people going about their daily business – just seeing the little things, the things you would miss if you were rushing past There's a minicab company further down the High Street and the drivers sometimes park in our road while they're waiting for fares They take such enormous pride in their vehicles, cleaning them out, polishing them, making them look their best That's the kind of thing I love to see – the minute details of other lives that it would be so easy not to notice

As much as I love being at home – and I really do; I often postpone going out and make myself late – I'd go mad if I stayed in all day, so I often take my laptop and go and work in the Larder It's a meeting place, a hub (and a hubbub) for people of all ages and, like my room, perfect for people-watching and for getting songwriting ideas The food is great, too I've often sat in there from 11 in the morning until seven in the evening, but never once have I been made to feel I'm hogging a table or getting in the way The staff reassured me that lots of people go and work there, so now, one day a week, I head to the Larder to deal with the practical side of music – the email writing, the organising, applications for festivals and gigs, website adjustments and so on There's a phenomenal amount to do in addition to the music itself and discipline and organisation are crucial

A lot of people find it hard to grasp the idea that creative people need routine, structure and order, but they probably need it more than anyone If you're going to have the quiet, meditative space you need, you have to make sure you create it You have to plan it, arrange life so that nothing gets in the way of it There must be nothing that interferes, so you need to make sure you deal with other aspects of your life at designated times, hence my weekly admin day

That said, I can't just decide to sit and a wait for a song to appear It doesn't work like that A song is something that comes up inside, something I can't understand or control – a feeling or an energy If it happens when I'm near a piano, I'm lucky, because then I can sit and let it all come out But I have to be organised to make sure I'm not disturbed

I wrote some of my best songs, including Home, at a time when I was very unhappy and nothing in my life was constant While it's true that misery and

uncertainty do breed creativity, I now realise that you don't need to seek them out in your own life – you don't need to live life on the edge, overthink or overanalyse Those feelings are there all the time, in the way your brain functions So you need stability, you need normality You need a daily structure

You also need routine and structure to bring you down gently after a live performance At one or two in the morning, after a gig, you can't sleep – it doesn't matter whether there was an audience of 10 or 1,000 people, you're on a high for a few days and you need stability to avoid a subsequent low Having a routine keeps your feet on the ground

You need other people, too This can be a lonely business, but since releasing my single I've been very conscious of the impact other people can have on a musician's success To raise the money to make my video I ran a pledging campaign, where I promised things – a private gig, a T-shirt, tickets and so on – to people who contributed to the cost It was amazing, I found I had pledgers I didn't know and I was no longer relying solely on family and friends, who have supported me for so long

People think you make success overnight, without realising how much you rely on them to spread the word So if you hear something you like, buy it and tell your friends about it That's the only way musicians will be able to carry on doing what they do

Borneo is on a lot of people's must-see list of places because of its beaches, wildlife – most famously the orangutan –

jungles and, for the more energetic, mountain climbing. It's a really special place, and while it's not the easiest to get to, it's well worth the effort. Consider spending a few days in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, on the way to Borneo, visiting the Petronas Twin Towers, Chinatown and the great markets, then fly over to Kota Kinabalu, the main town in Sabah.

Borneo's geography is quite complicated, with the one island split between three countries, but while the Malaysian side of the island is far smaller than the Indonesian side – the third country, Brunei, has a really tiny area – far more visitors head to Malaysia, and the province of Sabah receives most of these

The town of Kota Kinabalu, or KK as it's often known (they seem to like shortening town names in Malaysia), is a bustling place with plenty of interest, some great restaurants and a relaxed feel – it's certainly far less hectic than Kuala Lumpur (KL) There are some beautiful beaches along the coastline either side of the town, so you can stay close to the centre if you want to try the local restaurants and do a bit of shopping, or base yourself out of town on one of the glorious beaches a bit further away if you're looking for a more relaxed stay

Over on the east coast of Borneo is the town of Sandakan, where the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is located, and this is definitely worth visiting either for a day trip or overnight The centre has been helping to release rescued orangutans back into the wild since the 1960s, with many of their residents coming from areas of Borneo that have been cleared for logging, from illegal hunting activities, or from being kept as pets Orangutans are so rare and so mesmerizing that a centre like this is such an important place – many visitors are really moved to see some of the younger orangutans being hand reared by the staff, on their gradual way back into the jungle

One of the leading places to stay in Borneo is the beautiful Shangri-La Rasa Ria, a gorgeous hotel set on the beautiful sands of Dalit Bay The whole area around the Rasa Ria has a very relaxing feel, but the highlight is their very own orangutan centre, a 64-acre site that allows guests to see these amazing creatures up close Here you can actually get closer to the orangutans than you generally can at Sepilok, which is a good sign for Sepilok as it shows their programme is working, with the animals gradually moving back into the jungle areas of the centre

Some of the younger residents of the centre at the Rasa Ria can be particularly curious about the visitors, and they swing on the ropes to take a closer look If you visit the centre, don't be surprised if one of the orangutans comes within a few inches before the rangers intervene

For a holiday with adventure, Escape Worldwide's Karen Stewart swapped Wanstead for Malaysia and the island of Borneo, where she discovered glorious beaches combined with intriguing wildlife

Improve Your Smile @Woodford House Dental Practice162 High Road, Woodford Green Essex IG8 9EF020 8504 2704www.improveyoursmile.co.uk

Twenty-two-year-old Lauren Titchmarsh from Woodford, nowa trainee primary school teacher, was a child with a ready, beaming smile adults often commented on. In her teens, however, this changed. ‘I had become more self-consciousand didn’t like the look of my teeth, so I’d try hard not to letthem show. In group photos, you’d see my friends smiling butthere was me, always looking glum. People must have thoughtI was really miserable!’ Right up to adulthood, bubbly Lauren would hold back hersmile. She was unhappy not only about her teeth’s unevenness, but also about her ‘open bite’: an unattractive gapwhere top and bottom teeth didn’t quite meet. Then last yearher dentist – Dr Louisa Lawrence of the Woodford HouseDental Practice – suggested she should opt for a new proce-dure developed in the USA which could bring astonishing re-sults in as little as half a year, and which wasn’t prohibitivelyexpensive. It involved wearing a new type of adult brace whichDr Lawrence would tighten every four weeks to repositionthe teeth. ‘I didn’t mind the brace at all,’ says Lauren. ‘It’s clev-erly designed not to be too visible, and it was great to see thedifference it made from week to week right from the start. Injust seven months, my mouth looked quite different.’ Lauren’s self-confidence is fully restored, and she finds thatbeing able to smile openly again is bringing benefits both socially and at work. ‘I’m so glad I had this done – I feel a lotbetter about myself now.’

Dr Malik and Dr Lawrence are currently offering a FREE CONSULTATION for Six Month Smiles® fast-acting adult braces. Learn how, in expert hands, yoursmile could be transformed in a matter of months – with life-changing consequences!

As far as possible, there is a gathering at The Nightingale pub on the first Thursday of each month. It's the coming together

of local people to share knowledge and talk about the environmental issues affecting us all.

For example, some people like to grow their own vegetables and fruit on an allotment or in their garden, preferring the taste and the health of fresh food that hasn't been picked unripe, driven round the country and then kept in storage to home ripen Other people might want to learn how they too can enjoy home-grown produce with the resources they have, and so an exchange of ideas is established

Not all of us have the time or space to grow our own food, but that doesn't mean we don't care about the way our food is being grown and sold to us, or how farmers are treated by some multinational companies So what is the alternative?

Maybe some people might prefer to use our local shops, because without our support the people who run our local businesses might lose their jobs There was a staggering statistic quoted recently that for every pound spent in a locally owned business, up to 70 pence stays in the local economy (because the shop owner, family, and their staff might then use other local shops and services) But for every pound spent in a multinational, under 20 pence stays in the local economy The rest lines the pockets of the company bosses and the shareholders around the world So for a start that's why we meet in, and support, The Nightingale pub, a true local

People might be fed up with the increasing volumes of traffic in the area and fear for the safety of pedestrians and other more vulnerable road users, but they often don't know what to do about it Lots of people worry about the future of the planet and what will be left for our children and grandchildren to enjoy, because of climate change and all that goes with it, but feel helpless about what to do

There's a lot to be said for getting together with like-minded people, having a drink or two, and getting your thoughts off your chest You never know where it might lead to

It's a great way to network It's surprising what comes out of these informal evenings – new friends have been made, knowledge has been shared, unwanted items have later changed hands, local charitable events have gained support and someone has even found a place to live

Anybody is welcome to come along It helps if you wear an item of green clothing so we can spot each other There are no speeches, no membership costs involved, no commitment and no pressure, just a friendly evening in a lovely local – and you certainly don't have to drink absinthe or anything else green

Locals at the localMike Edwards reports on a monthly gathering at The Nightingale pub in Wanstead, where local people get together to chat about local and international environmental issues

Meetings take place from 730pm on the first Thursday of each month at The Nightingale, 51 Nightingale Lane, Wanstead The first gathering of 2013 will be held on Thursday 7 February Email [email protected]

London's biggest open space – almost 6,000 acres, stretching 12 miles from Manor Park to just north of Epping – and it's ancient history, including two Iron Age fortresses (Amesbury Banks and Loughton Camp). There are also fantastic viewing points for a great photograph, like Big View, which overlooks the Lea Valley.

Epping Forest offers some of the very best off-road cycling terrain The well-maintained trails provide something for everyone, from a beginner to the seasoned mountain biker

Make sure your bike is suitable for off-road cycling – a mountain bike is a good choice – and that it has been recently serviced Pack a rucksack with a small tool kit, pump and spare inner tube for any emergency repairs It is also a good idea to bring along some water and high-energy food As the weather can be changeable, make sure you have a rain jacket and some warm clothes – full-finger gloves can also make cycling more comfortable

There are lots of great places to visit for refreshments or a leisurely lunch stop, such as High Beach, where there are tea huts, a café, The Kings Oak pub and the visitor centre Or why not ride to Chingford Plain, where you'll find The View – a new visitor centre – Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge and the newly refurbished café Butlers Retreat You really are spoilt for choice

Please make sure you ride sensibly and respect the areas in the forest where cycling is not allowed The City of London Corporation website offers information about cycling and the forest's visitor centres provide maps of the area's tracks and places of interest

@ Woodford House Dental Practice

Improve Your Smile @Woodford House Dental Practice162 High Road, Woodford Green Essex IG8 9EF020 8504 2704www.improveyoursmile.co.uk

Twenty-two-year-old Lauren Titchmarsh from Woodford, now

a trainee primary school teacher, was a child with a ready,

beaming smile adults often commented on. In her teens,

however, this changed. ‘I had become more self-conscious

and didn’t like the look of my teeth, so I’d try hard not to let

them show. In group photos, you’d see my friends smiling but

there was me, always looking glum. People must have thought

I was really miserable!’ Right up to adulthood, bubbly Lauren would hold back her

smile. She was unhappy not only about her teeth’s

unevenness, but also about her ‘open bite’: an unattractive gap

where top and bottom teeth didn’t quite meet. Then last year

her dentist – Dr Louisa Lawrence of the Woodford House

Dental Practice – suggested she should opt for a new proce-

dure developed in the USA which could bring astonishing re-

sults in as little as half a year, and which wasn’t prohibitively

expensive. It involved wearing a new type of adult brace which

Dr Lawrence would tighten every four weeks to reposition

the teeth. ‘I didn’t mind the brace at all,’ says Lauren. ‘It’s clev-

erly designed not to be too visible, and it was great to see the

difference it made from week to week right from the start. In

just seven months, my mouth looked quite different.’

Lauren’s self-confidence is fully restored, and she finds that

being able to smile openly again is bringing benefits both

socially and at work. ‘I’m so glad I had this done – I feel a lot

better about myself now.’

Dr Malik and Dr Lawrence are currently offering a

FREE CONSULTATION for Six Month Smiles®

fast-acting adult braces. Learn how, in expert hands, your

smile could be transformed in a matter of months – with life-changing consequences!
