The Wanstead Village Directory proudly supports local businesses and we encourage you to do the same. Our High Street is proof enough of the individuality that independent retailers can bring to a town. Help us help these businesses by mentioning the Wanstead Village Directory when responding to adverts.

If you are a business that is based in Wanstead, or has a presence in the local community, then we can help you get your message across to our readers. The deadline for inclusion in the August 2015 edition is 22 July 2015.

Creating positive change within a community is rarely an easy feat. Indeed, it can be incredibly hard to enact changes to just our own lives – to stop smoking, to change eating habits, to reduce expenditure, to change jobs – let alone to effect change on a wider scale that requires the cooperation of others. When we refer to such change, it often invokes a sense of unease and a feeling of upsetting the status quo. But not all changes involve drastic cost-cutting exercises, controversial developments or reduced amenities and services. Changes can be subtle – they can be stealthily positive, where many benefit without realising it – or they can be bold additions that draw others into a spiral positivity.

Firmly in the category of bold changes is Wanstead's annual art trail, which immediately leaps to mind when discussing positive changes to a community. An event that perfectly captures the essence of the area, the trail has continued to delight and engage residents, visitors and local businesses since 2010 and, by its very nature, always has something creative up its sleeve to provoke thought and interaction (see page 22). It's hard to imagine anyone living or working in Wanstead not feeling a positive change from the art trail, whether that be the direct act of viewing an inspiring work or the indirect effects of increased footfall (and transactions) on the High Street.

Subtle changes are, by definition, less easy to pinpoint. Without the visual power of an artist-led initiative, those who achieve success on behalf of the environment (see pages 14-15), those who champion ethical food sources (see pages 50-51) and those who campaign for local and international charities (see page 40), for example, can find themselves fighting harder for their causes. Indeed, after 41 years of putting 'service above self', the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Rotary Club has lost its own fight for survival due to declining membership. The positivity of their achievements during that time, however, is as priceless as any masterpiece. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." (Margaret Mead, 1901-1978)

Music in Wanstead Park returns to the Temple Garden this month, with a diverse line-up of musical and sporting entertainment and activities on offer. Alongside the music acts – which will include performances from the Wanstead Rock Choir and Wanstead High School Big Jazz Band – the event will also feature bubble football, ferret racing, fairground activities, a magic show, craft demonstrations and live snakes to handle.

Picnics are welcome, but organisers have declared this will be a glass-free event. Ticket prices for the festival

– which will take place on 18 July from 2pm to 9pm – have remained the same as last year (adults: £10;

concessions: £5; under 4s: free), despite the 2014 event making a financial loss. Visit wavidi.com/miwp15

Changing zonesA petition has been launched to have Snaresbrook and Wanstead Underground stations reclassified from zone four to zone three. A similar campaign in 2009 was unsuccessful, but with Stratford now due to be moved into zone two in January, Ricky Varaden – who launched the campaign last month – believes the case is now much stronger. The petition cites stations such as South Ealing and Beckton, which, despite being further out from the centre of London, are still inside zone three. Visit wavidi.com/z3

Wanstead RFC player David Yems has completed a 'six marathons, six nations' challenge, raising funds for children's charity Whizz-Kidz. Over a seven month period, David – who plays in the front row at Wanstead – ran marathons in Lisbon, Dublin, Rome, Paris, London and Edinburgh and half marathons in Ealing, Bath, Silverstone and Hackney. David has achieved his initial £1,600 fundraising target, but is hoping a final flurry of donations will take the total over the £2,000. Visit wavidi.com/dy

Last chance for artists to join Art Trail Wanstead 2015

Those wishing to take part in the sixth Art Trail Wanstead this September are urged to finalise their arrangements by the end of this month. Amateur and professional artists need to pay the entry fee, agree a venue and submit details for the trail brochure by

31 July. Participants need to be members of Art Group Wanstead and have strong links to the area. Last year, there were more than 75 venues and 150 artists taking part in this popular community event. This year's theme is 'We are the Environment'. Visit wavidi.com/atw15

HomeFront community art competition returns

Local residents are invited to prepare for a community art competition this summer by turning their front gardens and front windows into creative spaces. HomeFront, which is sponsored by Bairstow Eves Lettings, is free to enter and will be part of Art Trail Wanstead,

taking place from 5 to 20 September. Last year's event saw bendy characters made by children from Leading Our Lives charity appearing all over Wanstead, while a sandbag installation stopped Redbridge Lane West passers-by in their tracks. Visit wavidi.com/hf15

A Wanstead playground has been spruced up by a team of volunteers from Amey – the company that collects waste for Redbridge – who joined forces with local residents to paint the fence and tidy up the area. "It was hard work, and another day will need to be organised

to finish the job, but hopefully residents can already see the difference," said Nicola Jarratt of the Wanstead Playground Association, whose fund to improve the Christchurch Green site now stands at over £35,000 following a gala dinner at the golf club last month.

Open-air theatre returns to Wanstead Park this summer

Wanstead United Reformed Church celebrates 150 years

A flower festival and an exhibition documenting its first 50 years were among the programme of events staged in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Wanstead United Reformed Church, which was constituted on 29 May 1865. The church building

was originally that of St Luke's Church on Euston Road, but in order to allow the construction of St Pancras station, it was taken apart and rebuilt in Wanstead, opening in 1867. A project to repair, renovate and reorder the church was completed in 2012.

A series of theatrical performances in Wanstead Park will take place over the summer as open-air theatre group Illyria bring a trio of shows to the park's Temple enclosure. Beginning on 16 July with an evening performance of Shakespeare's The Taming of The Shrew,

the award-winning group will also present two afternoon shows: Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe on 2 August and Oliver Gray's The Sorcerer's Apprentice on 12 August. The summer shows are now a regular fixture in park's calendar and often sell out quickly. Call 020 7332 1911

The fifth anniversary of the Wanstead Vintage Fashion and Brocante Fair will take place at the Wanstead United Reformed Church this month. The event – which offers genuine vintage fashion, accessories and pieces for the home – will feature a pompom workshop and

entertainment from Ultrasound Choir, who will be performing hits from the 1950s. Refreshments – including afternoon teas and birthday cake – will be served by The Great British Tearoom. The fair will be open from 11am to 5pm on 18 July. Visit lovevintage.co.uk

Fundraiser cycles length of Britain to complete bucket list

Guided walk will explore Wanstead's rich history

The Friends of Wanstead Parklands will be leading a guided walk this month and exploring the area's history as part of the Wanstead Park Summer Festival. The walk will begin at 10.30am on 25 July with a tour of St Mary's Church, which is regarded

as having one of the finest Georgian church interiors in London. The group will then move on to Wanstead Golf Club – which is located in the former stables of Wanstead House – before heading into the park itself and ending at the Temple. Visit wansteadpark.org.uk

Wanstead resident and fundraiser Frank Charles – who was diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2010 – has completed a challenge on his 'bucket list' by cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats. "I met so many amazing people along the way, especially in Shrewsbury, where

I had an unpleasant encounter with one hotel owner. It was witnessed by a local man who put the episode on Twitter and, before I knew it, I was an internet sensation," said Frank, who completed the journey in three weeks. Visit frankcharles.org.uk

The Wren Wildlife Group are inviting residents on a bat walk through Wanstead Park this month. "Wanstead Park supports quite a large population of bats, and we'll be looking for soprano and common pipistrelles, Daubenton's and noctule bats around

the lakes," said Tim Harris, who will be leading the event. A detector that converts bat echolocation 'shouts' into audible sounds will be used to identify the different species. The two-hour walk will begin at the park's tea hut at 8.30pm on 30 July. Call 07505 482 328

Wanstead Village Directory14

I met Ann Williams with Diana Korchein, who you read about in this column last month. A co-coordinator of Wanstead

and Woodford Friends of the Earth, she is also standing down this year. I asked her why, and she agrees with Diana: "We just got tired. Last year, we said we'd give it one more year. We thought a lot of people would join because of the Seeds for Snaresbrook project, but not one of the people who asked for seeds has done so". Just writing that makes me feel rather sad.

Ann is an academic specialising in medical history who, after 20 years, took early retirement from West London Polytechnic when she moved to Wanstead in 1987. She is a tireless campaigner and told me as a joke that she was a member of rent-a-mob in her youth. She joined Friends of the Earth in the 1970s, joined Greenpeace when the first Rainbow Warrior was sunk and was so annoyed by what happened, she apparently gave quite a bit of money to a campaigner on the street.

Then in 1992, she became an active canvasser and later rejoined the Green Party because, as she says: "Diana kept raving on about it." She was one of the founder members of the local Friends of the Earth group in 2007 and then campaigned for the Greens before starting to collaborate with Diana, becoming joint coordinator with her and, as they both say, progressively acting as one before she went to Winchester with Diana for the most recent election, where they achieved above average votes for their party.

It's impossible to list all the activities and achievements Ann has initiated and participated in. She and her sister (who she moved to Wanstead to be closer to) participated in the M11 chestnut tree protest and protested in the mud in Leytonstone. A medical setback some time ago has not stopped her at all. With Diana, she set up the Redbridge Sustainability Forum; a group that enabled those interested in sustainability, recycling and other charities to meet council officials regularly, understand what was going on and feed into the processes where appropriate. Unfortunately, the money ran out after 18 months, which is what prompted Ann and Diana to set up Transition Redbridge. Ann has been on the steering committee for this body for the last eight months.

Ann is also on the board of the embryonic vegetable box scheme Organic Ilford. It was started by a woman who, on returning to live in Ilford, had become horrified by what had happened in her absence. The name was chosen because of the abbreviation OI! Diana says that Oi is also a Korean cucumber. Ann is the Chairman of the Bush Wood Allotment Society, which deals with Browning Road and Kings Passage, and has had allotments there since 2000. She has also worked for Malston Street and the Community Gardeners for Transition Leytonstone.

In 2013, Ann and Diana (who I think of as the 'Tireless Two') successfully applied for an Olympic Legacy grant for the Seeds for Snaresbrook project. It took four months for the decision to be made, at which point it was almost too late to be able to get the seeds out for when they had planned! The idea was that residents and shopkeepers of the local community would get involved in seeding the tree pits with wildflowers. This would increase the bee population, give them more forage and also be attractive. Considering the area has about 1,200 trees, this was no small idea. The project has been successful all over the neighbourhood, particularly in Gordon Road, parts of Cambridge Road and Halstead Road. Although the project is officially over, there are still seeds left. A number of people are still applying for seeds for community spaces and the Tireless Two have decided to throw applications open further. So if you want wildflower seeds for your gardens or for patches of public land that is lying fallow, contact them as they're happy to help. Right now is a good time to sow, as is September.

So apply for the seeds, consider joining the local Greens or Friends of the Earth or just turn up at the meeting to see what they're up to. Ann says once you get into campaigning, you'll feel much more alive. Try it and see for yourself.

I am an historian and writer, thrilled that my first book has just been published by Macmillan. The Angel and the Cad is the

true story of Catherine tylney Long – heiress of Wanstead house. In 1811, Catherine was the richest, most eligible woman in Britain and she was courted by numerous suitors, including the future William IV. But like a true Austen heroine, she turned down the opportunity to become Queen and chose to marry for love. Enter 'the Cad', William Wellesley Pole, the dashing libertine nephew of the Duke of Wellington. the dynamic between William and Catherine was intriguing; they became the first-ever celebrity couple, keeping the nation enthralled as the shocking twists and turns of their marriage played out in the press.

Early reviews of The Angel and The Cad have been amazing. On 13 June, it was 'Book of the Week' in The Times newspaper, and the BBC History Magazine states: "Fascinating… Roberts does an outstanding job of bringing this dark tale to life, and her book truly is a page-turner that surpasses any work of Regency fiction."

As a local, I feel a strong personal connection with this story. Wanstead Park has a special place in my heart, and one of my aims in writing this book was to raise awareness of its English Heritage 'at risk' status.

I also wrote the book because the story is incredible! There are so many myths surrounding Catherine that I really wanted to get to the heart of the matter by finding solid primary source material. My husband Greg helped greatly with the research and our quest for clues has taken us to archives the length and breadth of Britain.

Our big breakthrough came when we discovered the transcripts of a highly explosive court case, which sheds new light on Catherine's life. I think that even those who are well-versed on the story of Wanstead House will be surprised by the final twist in the tale.

The Times review praises the vividness of detail in the book, stating: "You'd swear Roberts had been there, sitting in the drawing room, watching the drama unfold." I wasn't there, but I know a man who was! Doctor Bulkeley was the family physician and witness to some incredible scenes between Catherine and William. His colourful descriptions have greatly enriched my book.

The trial transcripts contain titillating testimonies from many eyewitnesses, including police officers, close friends and relations, the butler and the tutor. Affidavits from the long-suffering valet are hilarious, as he describes how William donned disguises and climbed through windows to clandestinely visit his mistress.

I hope that the saga of Wanstead House will finally reach a wider audience. I am particularly excited about my book launch in Wanstead this month.

the worldwide art phenomenon of yarn bombing is coming to Wanstead, as part of September's art trail. Far from simply

being something new to see, the organisers want men, women and children to be creative with wool or yarn and help add blazes of colour to the high Street.

Yarn bombing, also known as guerrilla knitting, urban knitting, yarn storming or knitted graffiti (without the damage), is considered art rather than craft. The practice is believed to have originated in the US, with Texas knitters trying to find a creative way to use their leftover and unfinished knitting projects, but it has since spread worldwide. The finished effect can be more akin to knitted sculpture – sometimes on a monumental scale.

But in Wanstead, we want to use it to help flag up this year's trail theme 'We are the Environment', with the blessing of the council.

Wanstead's foray into yarn bombing is the idea of yarn enthusiast Sid Beg, who sells wool, sewing and craft materials at her husband's Heads 'n' Tails pet shop. Sid says: "We'd love knitting and crochet groups to join in, in a big way. Yarn artists will be invited to install their work."

Smaller lengths of knitted or crocheted yarn made into colourful designs can be delivered to the pet shop at 23 Wanstead High Street. Contributors can even create lengths of yarn bunting, make yarn insects or animals or cover small objects with knitting. Be as creative or wacky as you want. Unwanted balls of yarn are also welcome. For your own work, you can use unravelled jumpers or even sections of old knitwear as knitted shortcuts. Before delivering your work, put a rainproof label on it with your name or organisation.

More opportunities for creating yarn-bombing creations will be available at Art Trail Wanstead events (5 to 20 September), at the farmers' market on 6 September and at the Wanstead Festival on 13 September.

Wanstead is bracing itself for a bout of yarn bombing and everyone can take part, adding colour to the High Street one stitch at a time Donna Mizzi reports on how a community can knit together

As people are increasingly leading busier lifestyles, redbridge Libraries understands that there is not always

time to physically visit our libraries. We are therefore pleased to offer free access to thousands of eBooks and eAudio books from a digital collection through Overdrive.

An eBook or eAudio book is an electronic version of the original. It can be read through your browser or downloaded onto various devices, such as a laptop or tablet. An eBook is read on screen and can contain pictures, graphics and numbered pages just like the printed version. An eAudio book can be downloaded onto a device or played through a computer to be listened to.

It is very simple and easy to download and use eBooks. The main advantage of using them is that they are accessible almost instantly. All you need do is select a book, download it and you will be able to read within minutes without leaving home. eBooks are also very portable – a device can store multiple copies, allowing you access to numerous books at your fingertips while you are out and about or on holiday. They also take up less space, leaving you more room in your suitcase.

There are thousands of free fiction and non-fiction titles for adults and children available through Overdrive. Redbridge Libraries allow you to borrow up to five titles at a time; all you need do is log in with your card number and PIN. You can change your account settings to borrow eBooks and eAudio books for either 14 or 21 days.

Our free eBooks and eAudio books are available online and are therefore accessible 24/7. If the item you want offers only the option of placing a hold, do so and you will be sent an email when the title is available for download. You will never accrue late fees with titles you download from the eLibrary. Titles expire at the end of the loan period and are automatically returned to the library if they are not renewed beforehand.

There is now the option to renew an item, so if you have not finished reading or listening to something and it is not required by someone else, you can borrow it again. You can, of course, return an item early if you are finished with it.

Visit our user-friendly eReading Room for eBooks and eAudio books suitable for children and teenagers. Here you can browse by subject and reading level. Please note, you will not be able to download library eBooks using a Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite eBook reader, although it is possible to use a Kindle Fire tablet.

Hol-e-day readingAs many of us count down the final few days to our summer holidays, Christine Thompson explains how Redbridge Libraries' eBook service can help you free up space in your suitcase

A free eBook drop-in session will take place at Wanstead Library on Wednesday 22 July from 2pm to 4pm.

Businesses are just as much at risk of being scammed as individuals. however, the ripple effect of a business can be

much wider reaching and can therefore result in multiple victims. Big or small, if a criminal can make money from your hard work, they will.

Knowledge is power, and the more you understand your business, the easier you will be able to detect if something is wrong. Vulnerable areas could be linked to your customers, suppliers, staff, legal associates and finances, as well as your online footprint. Identify your vulnerable areas and come up with an action plan to safeguard yourself against them. Always expect the unexpected and regularly review your strategies. Cyber-fraud is on the rise, so train your staff appropriately and educate them on the impact a loss can have on the business and how it could affect them.

Counterfeiting is big business, and it's not just expensive items that are reproduced. Make sure you are happy with the products you are buying. If you think that something is wrong, then call your local Trading Standards team, who are there to help you as a business, as well as to keep your customers safe. Selling a counterfeit product could have a potentially dire knock on effect, which could range from an innocent-looking phone charger causing a fire to a cheaper health product having a lasting ill effect on someone's life. Also, be aware of buying stolen property.

Fraud committed by staff members can have a great impact on a business, particularly on a small business, and is significantly under-reported. When employing staff, you should ask to see the employee's original documents and check references and their eligibility to work in the UK. If you notice that a member of staff is behaving oddly, then this may be cause for concern. Sudden changes in lifestyle, increased complaints, sickness and a drop in performance are just some of the signs. Where possible, keep the different functions of your business separate, using different staff to perform each process.

Despite the Bank of England's best efforts, currency is still counterfeited. £20 notes and £1 coins are the most commonly reproduced, so don't be afraid to check. Be extra vigilant if it is a large cash order you are dealing with or a small-valued item paid for with a large note. Also, watch the amount of credit you give to customers; think about asking for a part payment that will at least cover cost should something go wrong. Be aware of last minute changes to a delivery address, or multiple delivery addresses for the same customer. Remember, a company having a web page, being registered with Company House and having a VAT number does not necessarily make it legitimate.

This is just the tip of the iceberg and scams are always evolving. As a business owner, it is down to you to keep up to date with the latest information on keeping your business safe.

I am a mature, local,

self-taught artist who enjoys creating fantasy worlds depicting the themes of life, birth and growth. Originally from Lima, Peru, I have a mix of European and South American blood. I grew up watching my father, who was very artistic. he liked to take photographs and repaint them, carve wood, create sculptures and paint pictures, including on the kitchen walls. I feel blessed to have a combination of Latino artistic passion and the European appreciation for fine art and history.

I like to create a sense of depth and movement in my work. Although I prefer to draw in black and white, I believe my pictures portray a vivid, intricate world where the dimension of colour is manifestly obvious. I believe my role as an artist is as a trailblazer to portray other worlds, help reconnect humanity with our subconscious roots and expand our perception of the majesty and magic of creation. I believe that God is the creative principal behind, and expressed within, our surroundings and in our hearts.

I have always loved the outdoors and feel inspired by nature, the seasons and the many ways that the life cycles of different animals are expressed. Recently, I have been motivated by the beauty of Wanstead and the Wanstead House art support classes, which have contributed to the creation of several montages that depict the history of Wanstead Park and life springing from the depths of winter. The light doesn't only come from the sky but also from within.

The environment we create, whether in art works or more practically, reflects our own inner being. We are positively influenced by the beauty and sounds of nature in our forests and parklands, so we need to do everything in our power to preserve them for future generations.

Early in 1974, assistant extension officer harry Packford, a member of Wanstead and Woodford rotary Club, convinced the

two adjoining rotary Clubs to reduce their residential areas to enable a new club to be formed. New members were found from the Wanstead area and the Snaresbrook rotary Club was formed with an inaugural meeting held on 6 May 1974.

The new club consolidated its membership whilst meeting at the restaurant on the first floor of the Majestic cinema. The formal Charter evening was held at the Bloomsbury Centre Hotel on 6 September 1974, with a membership of 28.

The Club's first president was George Thompson, with David Browne as Vice President. Snaresbrook Rotary Club continued its meetings at the Majestic for five years. In 1960, the club transferred its lunch meetings to Packfords Hotel in Woodford Green. And in 1985, it moved to the Manor Hall, Chigwell. Harry Packford was made an honorary member of the club in 1987 and remained so for 19 years until his death.

In 1994, after a few months in temporary accommodation at the Papillion Restaurant in Wanstead, the club transferred once again to The Eagle public house in Wanstead until 1998, when it finally moved to the County Hotel in Woodford Green. Ladies were introduced to the club in 2003.

Wanstead and Snaresbrook Rotary Club have always had a strong community service ethos and looking back at our 41-year history, the club has raised in excess of £150,000 for charity, embraced everlasting friendships and given its members wonderful fellowship and a deep sense of purpose, and all this with humour thrown in.

However, we have tried and we have failed to appeal to new members and so the club has shrunk to a situation where it cannot continue. Members will no doubt join nearby Rotary Clubs

and continue their commitment to the Rotary aims of "Service above Self".

Our final meeting was held at Packfords Hotel, who very generously provided us with an evening to remember.

One door closes…Declining membership has led to the closure of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Rotary Club, which was disbanded last month Former member Ken Miller looks back on four decades of history

rotary continues… Despite the loss of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Rotary Club, the Rotary movement continues, both locally and internationally. Rotary currently connects 1.2 million members from more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work ranges from helping families in need in their own communities to working towards a polio-free world. The organisation started with the vision of one man: Paul P Harris, a Chicago attorney who formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary's name came from the group's early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

Events • Accommodation • Weddings

LDebra how long have youbeen running the hotel?I took over the running of the hotel in 1999 and undertook some major renovations, extending our bar area and ‘Hardy Room’ to allow us to host Wedding ceremonies as well as Wedding receptions in our ‘Garden Suite’. Each bedroom was also completely refurbished with new bathrooms and stylish interiors – I wanted to create a warm, homely and inviting atmosphere while maintaining the charm and character of the Edwardian building.

What services does your hotel offer? We have been hosting weddings for over 50 years but our space is also used for parties, private dinners, business conferences/presentations, photoshoots and funeral receptions. Guests and business clients alike are looked after by our experienced event team who pride themselves on the highest standards of customer satisfaction. We always aim to ensure all our guests and Brides & Grooms feel comfortable and at ease.

Melanie what is your backgroundand when did you join the team? After 12 years at Imagination in West London

and a stint at Sheesh in Chigwell, I decided to set up my own events company. It was while helping a friend with her wedding that I was introduced to Packfords. Although I have lived in Wanstead for many years, I had never attended an event at Packfords and was so surprised to discover such a lovely venue with beautiful gardens so close to home! I really enjoyed dealing with Sarah, Maria and the rest of the team and Debra offered me the role of ‘Events Manager’ in January 2014.

What makes Packfords different from other local hotels? Debra: My staff have worked with me for many years and really care about the service we provide. As we’re a smaller hotel we are able to offer a much more personal service and will always go above and beyond to make sure our customers have a special event to remember. It’s wonderful to see our wedding couples return year after year to ask us to host their child’s christening or special family celebration. We also hold Afternoon Teas four times a year which are always attended by many familiar faces…A visit is a must to get a true feeling for the hotel!

Packfords are hosting an Open Day & Wedding Fair on Sunday 10th May from 1pm with exhibitors, live music and a bridal fashion show. Pop in for a look around and join us for a Pimms in the Garden!

I first started taking photographs as a teenager when I borrowed my mum's camera to take pictures at a free concert

in hyde Park. the Move was top of the bill and somehow I managed to climb onto the bandstand to get some close-up shots. I wish I knew where those pictures are now.

When I started work, I bought myself a Praktica SLR camera with a 135mm lens. I would often go to the Hammersmith Odeon to see bands and I've taken pictures there of people like Frank Zappa, Bob Marley and, one of the most spectacular live acts, The Tubes. Nowadays, everybody takes photos at concerts with their mobile phones, but in those days, you weren't allowed to take photographs at music venues. So I used to wear a big raincoat and smuggle my camera in under that.

I joined the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society at the end of 2014. They're a very friendly bunch. Every month or so there's a competition that I find really useful because the judge will make comments about each picture, suggesting ways in which it could be improved. There are also trips to various places and there's always someone around to give useful advice.

I've found that I rather like night-time photos that include light trails made by moving cars. I soon realised that my compact digital camera wasn't going to produce those kind of shots, so I've now invested in a mirrorless Sony camera. I took this with me to Italy to watch a couple of stages of the Giro d'Italia cycle race. I rather fancied the challenge of trying to capture pictures of hundreds of cyclists whizzing past. It was a total contrast to the long exposures needed for night photography. Unfortunately, the weather was awful, with almost constant rain, but that didn't stop the racers from wearing their sunglasses with their rain jackets. I'll enter some of these shots into the next club competition in order to get some feedback. And as for concerts, I haven't taken a camera to one for over five years – I must get back into that.

Wanstead storiesElaine Gill The Ethical Eatery Company

Page 51: Wanstead Village Directory July 2015

I love food. having learned the basics of family cooking with my mum, at the age of 13 I could cook a full roast for the

family – me, Mum, Dad and three brothers. We were a working class family, living in a council prefab in a Cambridgeshire village. Although there was never any spare money, we always had an open door. It was a friendly, busy home.

Dad, a staunch Catholic and socialist, laboured for long hours at the local factory, grew our veg and loved to cook a Sunday breakfast for all of us (and often my teenage friends as well). He was a self-taught barber, with the result that all the men in the village pub had the same hairstyle! Mum, a full-time housewife and natural carer, prided herself on compliments received from neighbours on the whiteness of her sheets on Monday washday.

So, in this traditional background, when I embraced feminism, denounced organised religion and explored moving to London to train as a nurse, a shockwave went through the house. The uninspiring careers officer at my Catholic secondary school had told me it would be too hard for me to pursue such a career. My determination kicked in and aged 18, I began my training at the London Hospital in Whitechapel. I met my future husband Michael when I was a Ward Sister at the Middlesex Hospital in the West End (now demolished).

In 1985, we moved to Wanstead, into a house deemed uninhabitable by Environmental Health. It was all we could afford. But at 40-weeks pregnant, I was up ladders stripping paint (not to be recommended), did the house up and then we moved to our present home 25 years ago.

As a part-time working mum to Charlotte and Dominic, I had

ventured into the academic world of medical education

and healthcare and gained a PhD. I

was invited to apply to

Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Medical School, where, as a senior lecturer, I developed an education and research unit focussing on the role of communication in patient care, and to help train doctors and clinical teams to be person-centred rather than disease-centred. I remain passionate about the NHS and patient care.

But back to food. One of the joys of life is cooking and eating with friends and family. It represents love and creativity. My philosophy is that the food is sourced with ethical considerations, including animal welfare, employees' working conditions and ecology. And it must taste really good.

This year, I have gone back to part-time in my academic life and set myself another challenge: a small business I could run from home. So, The Ethical Eatery Company was born. I offer buffet menus, supper clubs and pop-up nights. Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, modern British and preserves are part of my range. I am collaborating with independent food businesses like Wanstead Fish and Organic Ilford. Kevin at Wanstead Fish has spankingly fresh fish from which I make fishcakes and croquetas etc. Most Fridays they are in his chiller.

If you see me driving around town in my little van with the Ethical Eatery logo, then give me a wave!

Wanstead Bowls Club was formed in 1923, largely by members of the Wanstead Golf Club and Wanstead

and Snaresbrook Cricket Club. It is situated in the grounds of the golf club on Overton Drive.

The game of lawn bowls is played during the summer months, from towards the end of April to the end of September. It can be played on various levels of competitiveness, from the fun roll up, to intra-club competitions, to league and inter-club knockout competitions. The game is played in either singles (one person against another), pairs, triples or fours, so there is plenty of scope to either play with your friend or partner or to get fully involved with other members of the club. If you wish to play competitive bowls, our club won three of the leagues that we entered last year, so you will be in good company. Whilst we do participate in these leagues, there are also plenty of organised days where the members just play against each other for fun. If you do not fancy such organised days, the green is open for all members to play at their own pace, from midday until the light fades.

The bowling green itself comprises a square-grassed area, which is divided into six 'rinks' going up the square and six 'rinks' going across. The direction used is regularly changed to minimise wear and tear on the grass. The objective of the sport is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty".

Our bowling green is recognised as being one of the best in the area, if not the county, and was used as a venue by Essex County Bowling Association against Middlesex as recently as June. It will also be used as the venue for this month's finals of an inter-Essex area competition, which involves the whole county. Our green is maintained by our own experienced green keeper and assistant.

Our clubhouse has recently been fully refurbished with assistance from the Wanstead Sports Association and Wanstead Golf Club.

The result is a building that can truly be called a venue in its own right and boasts a bar that sells anything you may wish to drink, with lager, cider, Guinness, keg ale and real ale all on draft. It also boasts a kitchen, brand new toilets and changing rooms. The function room, named after a long-serving and very respected member, has been completely redecorated and recarpeted. The clubhouse is used by our members to change in, socialise with each other or with visiting clubs and guests before and after matches and to host our popular social events for our members, both in and out of season. Our members are also automatically entitled to social membership of the golf club.

rolluprollupWith a recently refurbished clubhouse and one of the best greens in the country, Wanstead Bowls Club has plenty to offer anyone interested in trying their hand at a few roll ups, says Steve Forrest

Wanstead Bowls Club is located on Overton Drive, Wanstead, E11 2LW. For more information, call 020 8530 6476

Inns and taverns have been slaking English thirsts since the Norman Conquest at least. And in all that time, publicans have

maintained the beer in good condition, cooked meals, kept a watchful eye on the barmaid and, above all, provided a cordial atmosphere.

Most pubs, however, are Victorian in origin. Most result from a huge boom in their numbers as a result of the Beer House Act 1830, which allowed any ratepayer to open a public house for a licence of two guineas per year. As a result, tens of thousands of people turned their cottage front rooms into simple pubs. They were called beer or ale houses for a reason, as they were only licenced to sell beer. Several pubs in Wanstead were originally beer houses.

At the other end of the spectrum was the coaching inn, which was where coaching passengers waited while their horses were changed, refreshing themselves in the taproom, enjoying a meal or bug-ridden bed. Almost every town would have had a coaching inn or two and they were often centres of local life. The larger establishments would also have had ballrooms or dining rooms, where local societies enjoyed the annual meal together.

And in the middle were taverns and inns. Traditionally, taverns could sell spirits, wines and provide meals. Inns offered wine and lodging. But in practice, the terms have long been meaningless.

Premises, rather than publicans, were licenced to sell beer by local magistrates. The idea was for the authorities to maintain some sort of control over these places. If the landlord was thought to be 'conducting a disorderly house', it could be closed down. There are records, known as victuallers' licences, going back to Tudor times. Those records for pubs in Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Leytonstone are with the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford. Licences are generally arranged by the name (sometimes referred to as 'sign')

of the public house rather than by that of the publican. Trade or street directories should give you the name of the pub that your forebear ran.

Newspapers are also an important source for the history of pubs and the people who ran them. At coaching inns and larger pubs, the premises were often used for auctions and dances, or the venue for coroners' courts or sporting clubs. But anything could happen. Even the smaller beer houses might be mentioned. Perhaps the landlord was retiring or there had been a fight outside after closing time. In August 1872, for example, James Higgins, the 13-year-old pot boy of The George in Wanstead, was convicted of stealing a gold watch and silver chain from the landlord, Alfred Alderton.

Pubs also often feature in old photographs. As well as shots of the buildings, also look out for pictures of the regulars going on a charabanc trip to the seaside or of a sporting team at the pub.

Mine host, my familyThis month, genealogist Simon Fowler will be showing members of the East of London Family History Society how to research those ancestors who ran a pub or worked in a beer house, tavern or inn

Simon's talk to East of London Family History Society will take place at 7.30pm on 22 July at Wanstead Library. Visitors are welcome – call 020 8508 2403

Julie Aldred, head of clinical negligence at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, takes a look at the consequences of an important change to the law relating to medical consent

In a judgment from March of this year, the Supreme Court overruled the long-standing law on medical consent on the basis that

it no longer reflected modern attitudes to patient-centred treatment, failed to reflect the current status of the doctor-patient relationship and failed to give due respect to the ability of patients to understand treatment options.

Previously, the law relating to what constituted 'informed' consent for a particular treatment was laid down in the House of Lords cases of Bolitho vs City and Hackney Health Authority (1998) and Sidaway vs The Board of Governors of Bethlem Royal Hospital and Maudsley Hospital (1985). In those two cases, the issue of what should be discussed with the patient and what risk a doctor felt should be brought to the patient's attention,

was considered to be a matter of professional practice. If, therefore, independent experts

instructed on a clinical negligence case thought it was reasonable of a doctor not

to bring a particular risk to the attention of the patient, then the doctor had not

been negligent. Any failure to warn was, therefore, assessed against

standards that prevailed in the Health Service as at the

time of the treatment.

In Montgomery vs Lanarkshire Health Board (Scotland, 2015), the Supreme

Court decided that the issue of

whether a risk or

matter should have been discussed with the patient was not one of negligence, but a matter of patient autonomy, and whether it was right to discuss it with the patient was a matter for the courts and the law, not medical practice. The Supreme Court ruled that the true test in such a case is whether the doctor exercised reasonable care to ensure that the patient was aware of the material risk and of any alternative treatments available when judged by the standard of whether a reasonable person in the particular patient's position would be likely to attach significance to the risk – in the Montgomery case, the risk of shoulder dystocia.

Mrs Montgomery claimed that she should have had the option of a caesarean section discussed with her during her pregnancy, as well as vaginal delivery. Mrs Montgomery was small and she was carrying a large baby. There was an increased risk that the baby's shoulder would become stuck, but this risk was not explained to her. It was accepted by both sides that if a planned caesarean section had taken place the shoulder would not have become stuck.

As a result of the shoulder dystocia, delivery was delayed, resulting in a lack of oxygen to her baby, which in turn caused serious brain damage to her child.

During the course of their judgment, the cases of Bolitho and Sidaway were overruled by the Supreme Court on the basis that the failure to take into account the knowledge and wishes of the patient resulted in unacceptable medical paternalism.

Clearly any significant risk – either a large risk that something would occur even if the outcome were small, or a small risk that damage might occur particularly if that damage is very significant – is now, post-Montgomery, something that should be discussed with the patient. Much debate will continue on whether a small risk of slight damage has to be discussed with a patient, and this question has not been resolved, but equally if the risk was slight and the injury itself modest, it is unlikely that such a case would be litigated at all. What is clear is that:

z The issue of what should be discussed with a patient is a matter of law, not professional practice, and it is for the courts, not doctors, to determine whether there has been a failure to explain risk in the context of a patient's consent for treatment.

z The level of obligation imposed on a doctor is now to be determined largely by reference to what a reasonable patient might wish to know. In the modern age of internet access, patients may well be more informed and eager for a more detailed discussion.

z The only exception to this obligation will be in the rare situation of a therapeutic exception, such that to tell a patient the truth would be positively harmful to his or her health.

z Doctors cannot discharge their obligation by bombarding the patient with statistics about risks. The information has to be given in a clear fashion. Doctors will need to take more care to make clear and careful notes of what has been discussed and explained to a patient.

Sam Montgomery was born in October 1999, yet reference in the judgment of the Supreme Court was made to the General Medical Council's 2008 guidance for doctors on obtaining informed consent, so that the decision is, in essence, retrospective. There is, therefore, an argument that cases going back many decades will be capable of litigation and strong arguments as to why the three-year limitation period will not apply.

Both the medical and legal professions will face challenges as to how exactly this case will change actual practice, but it is clear that if a patient truly consents in the full knowledge of risks, it is highly unlikely that they will be able to complain if that risk in fact materialises. It is then for the patient to 'own' their own decisions and as such, would suggest a reduction, rather than an increase, in litigation.

the Dagenham Girl Pipers celebrates its 85th anniversary this year. When it was founded by the reverend Joseph

Waddington Graves, made up of 11-year-old girls from his Sunday school, no-one could have guessed its fame would spread around the world.

Mr Graves became Congregationalist Minister at Osborne Hall, Dagenham in spring 1930. He needed to fundraise to pay off a loan taken out to build the hall and came up with the idea of forming a children's band to perform at events. After 18 months' training in piping, drumming, marching and Highland dancing, the Dagenham Girl Pipers gave its first public performance – the first female pipe band in the world.

Mr Graves established the band as a professional organisation, with himself as manager and the girls as paid employees. They appeared at theatres, cinemas, carnivals and sporting events across Britain and overseas.

In 1937, the pipers toured Germany and Adolf Hitler became a fan. They returned in summer 1939, but Mr Graves managed to bring them home not long before World War Two broke out. During the war, many girls performed in ENSA concert parties. Pipe Major Peggy Iris and Sergeant Margaret Fraser toured Africa with ENSA for three years, giving over 1,000 performances, and were awarded the Africa Star.

In 1938, the girls were given medicals and the doctor reported they were so fit they would live to the year 2000. So Mr Graves planned a Millennium Day reunion. All band members, then and in the future, pledged to meet at the Civic Centre in Dagenham at noon on 1 January 2000. The event was broadcast live on BBC1.

When Mr Graves retired he was succeeded by David Land (best known for nurturing the careers of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber). Many long-haul international tours followed – by the end of the 1950s the band had visited 44

countries. They travelled to the 1958 Brussels World Fair in patriotic style in a fleet of specially painted red, white and blue Austin minibuses.

The 1960s opened with the band enjoying a two-year contract at the Paris Lido nightclub, home to the famous Bluebell Girls. Celebrities were often in the audience and the girls were thrilled to see Elvis there four nights running. By 1968, however, with travel and hotel costs rising, the band folded as a professional organisation. The pipers now only receive expenses, not wages.

Upbeat is a community choir open to anyone aged 16 or over. We sing everything from pop to classical, world to folk. In 2012 we sang at Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Watford Colosseum, performed for the Olympic Torch Procession at Valentines Mansion, and won a national competition for the best National Anthem to Cheddar!

Upbeat offers fantastic opportunities to develop your voice and your confidence, to meet new people and to sing in exciting places. Don't worry if you think you can't sing, Upbeat is a warm and welcoming environment where you'll have a chance to learn the ropes. No audition is required, and you don't need to read music. We rehearse on Tuesdays, 8pm during term time at Wanstead House, 21 The Green.

To find out how to reserve a place, please go to www.upbeatchoir.com or contact me, Tim Sutton, at [email protected] or on 07976 754 741

With their bright colours and propensity to fly on sunny days, butterflies get all the good press.

Meanwhile, moths, their close relatives, get the blame for eating our clothes and being the harbingers of doom – like so many other nocturnal creatures.

First, let's dismiss the myths. Only a tiny, tiny minority of moth species are interested in coming into our houses, let alone destroying our wardrobe. Apart from clothes moths and a few others, if a moth enters a house, it is because it is seeking shelter or has been attracted to a light. While many species are on the wing at night, in our area the total number of moths on the wing is probably greater by day than by night, particularly in open areas like Wanstead Flats. Not only are 99% of moths harmless, they perform an important function as plant pollinators – by day and night – and as food for bats!

So what moths can we expect to see locally? On a warm summer's day, close scrutiny of wooded areas might provide views of bizarre-looking yellow-barred longhorns. Shiny golden-brown with a yellow cross-band, a couple of things draw attention to this tiny moth: the males can often be seen 'dancing' in the air, rising and falling like tiny yo-yos. The males also have incredibly long antennae, four times the length of their body. Bush Wood and the copses on Wanstead Flats are good places to look for this creature, but areas of unmown grassland are the domain of bright crimson and black six-spotted burnets and cinnabar moths. The caterpillars of the first of these gems love bird's-foot trefoil, while those of the latter favour ragwort, which flowers a little later in the summer.

With more subtle shades of buff, light and dark brown are two more grassland denizens, burnet companion and mother shipton. The latter is named after Ursula Southeil, better known as Mother Shipton, supposedly a soothsayer and prophetess of the early 16th century. If an old engraving is anything to go by, she would have won no beauty contests having a long, hooked

nose and very prominent chin – just the profile marked out in dark brown on the moth's wings.

That's only half the story. Wanstead's night-flying moths are extraordinarily varied – and for a very good reason. The large number of species in our area reflects the broad range of food plants available for the moth larvae. Nettles, brambles, ground-ivy and borage provide food for many, including the dazzlingly colourful Jersey tiger moth, which can also be seen flying by day. The big and beautiful pink and green small elephant hawkmoth is now probably the commonest hawkmoth in our area and it is easy to see why: its larvae munch rosebay willowherb, purple-loosestrife and a variety of bedstraws. Meanwhile, the fact that we have so many hawthorn trees helps to explain the presence of two more moths with beautiful and evocative names: old lady and brimstone, while angle shades benefit from local oak trees.

The problem with nocturnal moths, of course, is seeing them. That's why local moth enthusiasts use light-traps to attract them. Rest assured, no moths are harmed in this process; they are simply identified, photographed and released the following evening. To date, just three enthusiasts living around Wanstead Flats have identified more than 450 moth species – three times the number of birds locally and 15 times the number of butterflies.

In the fifth of a series of articles exploring local biodiversity, Tim Harris of the Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group dispels some of the myths surrounding moths, of which there are many in Wanstead

Michelle Gibbons, T-Space For all enquiries please contact Michelle [email protected] 020 8989 7180

T-Space is a full service Design and Build company. Our background is in free thinking home design, working with clients to design their ideal environment. We often speak of ‘tailored living space’, and architectural practice is still at the heart of our business. In recent years, however, we have extended our remit to include the construction of our projects. This provides our clients with a seamless service. It means we are free to pursue excellence without having to work through third parties. The only people involved are our clients and us, so we can concentrate on optimising the outcome, with the flexibility to react to site conditions and changing hearts.
