“There’s an app for that.”A few years ago, as the smart phone

revolution really took hold, thatphrase reminded us there was anapplication for nearly every possibleneed. Since that phrase was first ut -tered, the number of apps has grownexponentially. From organizing yourgrocery list to managing your fi nan cesto simply killing time, there truly is anapp for everything, including forestryand logging.

There are plenty of apps that log-gers can and do use in different situa-tions. Navigation apps help with rout-ing and location searches. Flashlights,weather alerts and emergency locationcommunicators help keep jobsitessafe. Financial apps help keep track ofexpenses. There are also administra-tive planning tools that help loggersmanage daily tasks.

Also, contrary to what manyyoung people will say, you can alsouse a smart phone to talk to people.These are easy to use and inexpen-sive, often free.

With the ubiquitous nature of smartphone apps, it seems only logical thatthe next step would be apps createdspecifically for logging.

Daniel Turner thought the samething, so he looked for a logging appthat would help his business. But henever found one that did exactly whathe wanted it to do. So he took mattersinto his own hands.

You might remember Turner frommy column last month. He is a younglogger from Stockton, Mo. who ispassionate about not only the successof his family-owned business, but theentire logging industry. Turner Log-ging LLC is a prime example of alogging operation that has successful-ly embraced technology to positivelyimpact the business.

This year Turner took his use oftechnology to the next level by devel-oping an app. Recognizing an oppor-tunity to streamline his business, andunderstanding that mobile technologyis the future, Turner worked with asoftware developer to create TimberTracker. His goal was to create an appdesigned for loggers, by loggers.

“I’m always looking for simplerand better ways to do things. Therewas nothing out there to meet mybusiness needs like Timber Tracker, soit was a perfect time to take a chanceand go for it. The app has been

extremely helpful to date, especially inan industry like ours where time ismoney,” relates Turner.

He says Timber Tracker enableshim to estimate the timber harvest,price the products, and prepare andsend a quote PDF to customers. Hehopes it will become a one-stop placefor loggers to get online and findexactly what they need from any job-site. The app was developed by TheApp Pros, LLC of Springfield, Mo.and will continue to evolve.

“We can keep track of number oflogs and footage; instead of mailingreceipts or an invoice, just a simpleclick and it sends an email. Removingtime, guesswork and paperwork hassped things up tremendously. You canbe anywhere, any time and re ceive anupdate. The property owners are alsomore in the loop,” Turner advises.

John Deere has also been offeringmobile applications to the loggingindustry for several years. The appsare designed to work with JDLink-TM, John Deere’s remote monitoringsystem.

Users have access to real-timeinformation about their machines’whereabouts, and production data andcode alerts, which provides optimumperformance and compliance withpreventative maintenance tasks.

John Deere also created GoFell

mobile application for M-Series track-type feller- buncher customers avail-able for iPhone® and Android®. Theapp was designed to assist operators inunderstanding machine controls, set-tings and diagnostics.

GoFell acts as an operator’s quickreference guide, providing loggerswith instant access to informationabout feller-bunchers and tips to cus-tomize the operating experience tomaximize productivity.

As a logger, you demand moreuptime; fast, accurate diagnosis ofmachine problems; rapid, effectiveservice response and the right part, thefirst time; better fuel economy; andcloser tracking of machines and oper-ators for more efficient operation.While app technology alone will notmake or break your business, it willmake success more probable.

More importantly, Turner’s creationof Timber Tracker is an example ofwhat can happen when a loggerembraces technology as a way tomake his business more efficient andstreamlined.
