Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) – optional at extra cost

ESP helps the driver maintain full control of the vehicle during adverse or emergency

conditions. ESP technology is designed to monitor both the front and rear of the car

independently and compare their respective directions of travel with the driver’s steering

wheel input. If either the front (understeer) or rear (oversteer) of the vehicle begins

to slide, ESP gently applies corrective braking to the appropriate individual road wheel,

controlling the slide and maintaining safe progress.

When a vehicle is understeering excessively, it displays an unwillingness to change direction

as the outside front tyre has become overloaded and begun to slide. In this instance, ESP will

apply a braking force to the inside rear wheel, slowing it down and increasing the vehicle’s yaw

angle to help the front wheels change direction.

During the more unusual oversteering situation the vehicle’s yaw angle is excessive due to

the outside rear tyre having lost grip. Although countersteering is an effective solution, it is often

difficult to judge how much opposite lock to apply. ESP, however, will apply the correct braking

force to the outside front wheel, which will reduce the yaw angle and bring the vehicle back

under control.
