WHEN LAST THEY MET: Then sophomore quarterback Kevin Hurley Jr. handled matters with both his arm and his feet, leading the McMurry University football team to its fi rst win of the season by topping Howard Payne University, 33-21. On the ground, Hurley ran for 102 yards on eight carries, including a 22-yard touch-down jaunt in the fi rst quarter. Hurley’s rushing total was the most by a McMurry signal-caller in a game since Rashon Lewis carried 21 times for 138 yards versus Hardin-Simmons in 2007. Through the air, Hurley completed a sterling .739 percent of his pass attempts, 13-of-23. Hurley had a pair of aerial TDs, as well, both to wide receiver Trevion Harris. Hurley and Harris connected on scoring passes of 12 yards in the fi rst quarter and 23 in the second. That fi repower helped McMurry jump out to a 27-0 halftime lead and a 30-0 advantage early in the third stanza. The Yellow Jackets got off the deck to score their fi rst points in the fi nal minute of that third quarter and added a pair of fourth quarter tallies, as well.

HPU 2018 AT-A-GLANCE: The Howard Payne University football team committed fi ve turnovers in a 35-3 season opening loss at George Fox University last Saturday afternoon at Stoffer Family Stadium in Newwburg, Oregon. George Fox tallied 372 yards of total offense, 209 on the ground but it was Howard Payne’s four intercep-tions and one fumble loss that was the difference in the game. The Yellow Jackets posted 134 yards of total offense, 107 in the air.

MCM 2018 AT-A-GLANCE: McMurry has opened 2018 with an 0-2 record. Last week, McMurry was unable to thwart a strong rushing attack by Southwestern University in its American Southwest Conference opener, falling by a 37-6 score at Wilford Moore Stadium. Southwestern bulled its way to 352 yards on the ground on 62 carries, led by Kalon Heim’s 171 yards on 24 attempts. The War Hawks were held to 89 yards as a unit, with Doyle Hughes carrying 13 times for 56 yards. After a total of seven scoreless quarters in 2018, McMurry got off the deck early in the fourth quarter versus SU. A fi ve-play, 54-yard drive was highlighted by a 40-yard aerial from quarterback Kevin Hurley Jr. to wide receiver Trevion Harris at 14:48 left to play. The McM defense was paced by sophomore linebacker Josh Smith. Smith had a game-leading 14 total tackles, eight of the solo variety. Smith had 3.0 tackles for loss and caused one fumble.

THAT’S A NO-NO!: The War Hawks lead the ASC for drawing the most opponent penalties. Thus far in 2018, McM’s foes have been fl agged 19 times for 235 yards (117.5 yards per game in penalty yardage).

IN THE ZONE...NOT: Howard Payne - along with Louisiana College - are the only two ASC schools yet to have and “red zone” opportunities in 2018. The War Hawks are 0-3 in the “red zone.”

JUST FOR OPENERS: After falling to Trinity in the 2018 season lid-lifter, McMurry football as an all-time record of 38-53-2 in season-opening games. McM has lost its last 3 openers.

ON THE CHART: QB Kevin Hurley is ranked #19 on McMurry’s career passing list with 1,742 yards. Next up at #18 Frankie Franz’s 1,804 yards (1995-97) and #17 Rashon Lewis’ 1,843 yards (2007).

SECOND TIME AROUND: McM sophomore linebacker Josh Smith is looking to repeat his 2017 season, leading the War Hawks with 87 tackles and earning ASC Freshman of the Year honors. Smith was also an All-ASC honorable mention honoree. Thus far in 2018, Smith has a team-leading 24 tackles.

PRE-SEASON PROGNOSTICATION FOR 2018: McMurry was picked eighth out of 10 teams in the 2018 ASC Pre-Season Poll of coaches, SIDs and media.

HEAD COACH LANCE HINSON

McMurry University named Lance Hinson as the War Hawks’ head

football coach on May 9, 2014. Hinson came to Abilene a er spending

nine seasons as the head coach at e University of St. Mary in

Leavenworth, Kan.

Hinson – a native of Rockwall, Texas (Rockwall High School) and

graduate of the University of North Texas – is the 22nd head football

coach in school history.

e 2017 campaign saw the War Hawks nish the season at 2-8 overall.

Four McM players - Jordan Washington, Justin Eaton, Jacob Ferguson

and Josh Smith - were all honored by the American Southwest

Conference with post-season awards (Smith also being recognized as the

Freshman of the Year).

In 2016, the War Hawks went 4-5 and earned several post-season

honors. Among them, junior DB Jordan Washington setting ASC

records for interception return yards in a game and season, on his way

to all-ASC honors (in all, four players received ASC accolades). DB

Decorian Johnson received an invitation to rookie mini-camp with the

Kansas City Chiefs.

A young 2015 McM squad compiled a record of 4-6. e War Hawks

dropped three games by a eld goal or less and with a di erential of 11

total points for four losses.

In his rst McMurry campaign in 2014 - playing an NCAA II schedule

as a member of the Lone Star Conference - the War Hawks went 2-8

overall. However, the McM squad scored a season-opening win over

NCAA Division I Houston Baptist for Hinson’s rst win at the McMurry

helm. Senior receiver Jeret Smith also broke the school record for

receiving yards and drew attention from NFL scouts.

Hinson had been the head coach at USM since 2005 and, prior to that,

was an assistant with the school from 2002 through 2004. He joined

the program during its embryonic years – in just the third season of the

program’s existence – and has been the architect in building it into a

well-respected team.

In his rst season as head coach with USM, Hinson was named Kansas

Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) “Co-Coach of the Year,” leading

the Spires to the team’s rst ever four-game winning streak and a 5-5

record. e 2005 season featured a defense that posted three shutouts

and nished nationally ranked in the top-10 of eight di erent categories.

Hinson received his second KCAC “Co-Coach of the Year” following the

Spires’ 2011 season, posting a 7-2 conference record, nishing second in

the KCAC.

Hinson’s coaching career began in the state of Texas, as an

undergraduate - and eventually graduate - assistant at the University

of North Texas in 1993. He was responsible for defensive ends and

linebackers. e 1994 UNT squad went 8-2-1 and earned the Southland

Conference Championship, as well as a berth in the NCAA Division

1-AA playo s

From 1997-2001, Hinson was an assistant at Baker University in Baldwin

City, Kansas. At Baker, Hinson coached tight ends, quarterbacks, and

wide receivers. e 2000 season at Baker ended with the Wildcats going

9-2 and winning the KWTO Bowl over Campbellsville (Ky.) and

nishing No. 15 in the nation for the NAIA.

Hinson earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University

of North Texas (1996), as well as a master’s from Baker University in

2000. Hinson has three children, son Jake (a high school football coach

in Kansas City), daughter Holly (a senior at McM) and Lily. Hinson and

his wife Andi reside in Abilene.
