Afghan Border Patrol Leader Inspects OP, Meets With Local Villagers

U.S. Navy Mobile Public Affairs Detachment-AfghanistanStory by Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Howlett

04.19.2010

KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan– Hoping to gauge the effectiveness of

efforts to secure the border while discerning the needs of local villagers, a

senior Afghanistan border patrol leader inspected the 5th Kandak

Headquarters in Southern Afghanistan, April 15. Col. Ghuzai Sharif,

commander 3rd Zone, inspected the roughly half-square mile complex in the

Shurabak district of Kandahar Province, located along the rugged

Afghanistan/Pakistan border.

The visit provided Sharif, and his International Security Assistance Forces,

Afghanistan advisors, an opportunity to deliver supplies and equipment to his

troops and meet with the elders of the local village.

The official party arrived by helicopter to the remote and mountainous station

where there are nearby caves frequently occupied by the Taliban. Troops were

waiting to offload bags of flour, building supplies, new ATVs and other military

supplies. While the helicopters were being unloaded, Sharif formally greeted

the rest of the station's troops who were assembled outside the main building.

Afterwards, the troops quickly mounted

Dental Advice: Only Floss the Ones You Want to Keep

506th Air Expeditionary Group Public Affairs Story by Master Sgt. Martie Moore 04.19.2010

Few things compare with the pain of a toothache. It hurts to eat; the hot and cold sensations shoot through your teeth

and any relief is temporary. The only thing worse is the fact you have to go to the dentist to make it better.

"People do come in and say they hate us," said Staff Sgt. Tamika Ortiz, 506th Expeditionary Medical Squadron dental

technician deployed from Eglin AFB, Fla. "But we're nice."

The Air Force dental industry covers five areas: general dentistry, endodontic, periodontal, orthodontic,

86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (MTN) Story by Staff Sgt. Whitney Hughes 04.19.2010

CHARIKAR, Afghanistan - Stretch marks, maternity leave,

baby names, mood swings, morning sickness; these are some of

the many concerns that weigh on a woman's mind during

pregnancy. With all of the changes to her body, and soon to her

life, there is much for a pregnant woman to worry about. But in

Afghanistan, the country with the world's 4th highest Maternal

Mortality Rate, women must first worry about their very

survival.

Especially in remote areas of the country, away from state of

the art technology, medications, and hospitals women's lives

and their pregnancies are at risk because of the lack of medical

care. That is why the class of 29 women from Kapisa, Parwan,

Pakistan's President Signs Constitutional Amendment, Relinquishes Some Powers

VOA  Sean Maroney | Islamabad 19 April 2010

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has signed into law a constitutional amendment that strips him of powers

originally given to the presidency by the country's former military dictator two decades ago.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardai signed the 18th amendment in the presidential palace, during a ceremony that

ranged from a solemn affair of gathered dignitaries to a raucous political rally.

Gathered in attendance were select members of Pakistani civil society, government officials, and the heads of the

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development has said Sudan's election was credible. Selah Hennessy spoke to

"The election was credible and of course we are qualifying our credibility factor by all the challenges that were evident,"

said Maalim.

Voting ended Thursday and ballots are still being counted in the country's first multi-party presidential, parliamentary,

gun fights, suicide bombers, and improvised explosive devices. When

in the middle of a potentially dangerous situation, one of the people

Florante is in the middle of his second deployment. During his first

EU: Half of Europe's Flights Could Take off Monday

VOA  William Ide | Washington 18 April 2010

The European Union presidency says that air traffic over Europe could return to about 50 percent of its normal level on

Monday, if weather forecasts confirm that skies over the continent are clearing of volcanic ash.

European transportation ministers from countries affected by the ash a volcano in Iceland began spewing into the sky

last week will meet on Monday by video conference in an effort to reopen closed airspace.

The volcanic ash has brought chaos to the region - canceling most trans-Atlantic and European flights and leaving

thousands of airline passengers stranded for days, as well as disrupting commerce.

European Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas says Europe has never experienced a transportation disruption like this

and that officials

Odierno Says US Withdrawal From Iraq on Track

VOA  Paula Wolfson | Washington 18 April 2010

The commander of U.S. forces in Iraq says the planned withdrawal of American troops is on schedule despite ongoing

political uncertainty in Baghdad, and an increase in attacks by militants. General Ray Odierno talked about the

situation on the ground during an interview broadcast Sunday on American television.

General Odierno says progress has been made in Iraq, but acknowledges much more must be done. He says political

parties must sort out the results of recent elections and form a government, and Iraqi forces still require U.S. military

training and support. But he says he remains confident that the timetable for a U.S. military withdrawal can and will be

met.

Odierno told the Fox News Sunday television program there are about 95,000 American troops in Iraq. He said almost

half will be pulled out during
