The War Remnants Museum, Siem Reap

Where Cambodia’s PAST and it’s FUTURE come together

The War Remnant Museum is more than a museum. It is also a centre that provides education / training and support for hundreds of at-risk people and landmine survivors, many whom are part of families suffering overwhelming hardships.

The War Remnant Museum was created so that it might serve as a place of healing for bodies, hearts and minds and an important role in the development of society. We believe that love, support, education and teaching new skills will help secure better opportunities in life.

Mission

Suon RattanaIn 1976 Suon Rattana was forced to become a child soldier by the Khmer Rouge at the age of 14. For his own survival he had to fight. Suon’s parents were killed shortly after this along with 24 other local families in the rice fields of Kompong Thom province by the Khmer Rouge. In 1989 Suon lost his right leg due to a landmine explosion and to this day continues to suffer from PTSD.

However, opening the Museum and being a driving force behind helping the community through this Social Enterprise has seen joy return to Suon’s life.

PurposeWe are not just a museum to show relics and remnants but we provide visitors with a unique and thoughtful insight into the perils Cambodia faced in the 3 three decades of conflict.

“This museum is an inspirational place, being able to speak with and hear the stories of war veterans was a different and special experience. What is being done for the community through this project, especially for children, is what this country needs. It is clear the community is benefiting and I hope that funding and visitors continue to increase”.Jessica - UK

VisionWhilst we are still very much a grass roots Social Enterprise there is already a very worthwhile project on the grounds – “The Kitchen of Hope” The Kitchen currently provides a nutritious meal twice a week for the children living in the local community, many that actually fend for themselves.

There is also a plan to build a vocational centre where the local villagers can learn new skills and ultimately create an income stream to be able to look after their families without the need to leave children on there own whilst the parents go to Thailand looking for work.

We need additional funding to ensure the sustainability of the Museum so we can continue to support Khmers that support their community.

Your SupportWe would like to get five (5) Corporate Sponsors each providing only $417 USD per month ($5,000 a year).

This would cover ALL running costs such as staff wages (locals only, western volunteers DO NOT take a salary of any sort), electricity and water. It would also provide for the general up keep of the grounds and exhibits as well as a small budget for marketing.

With these costs covered ALL income generated through ticket sales and onsite events (which we are planning) can go towards the projects to support the community. These include:

• Refurbishment of run down shelters• Mosquito nets, blankets, bed mats• The building of the Vocational Centre• New skills training• Food packages• And many more
