    W A R E H O U S ESOLUTION DES IGN

Warehouse Solution Design is a core componentwithin a complete Logistics Solution Design Serviceoffered by Cirrus Logistics. It combines the bestin warehouse modelling and simulation

technology with the global hands-on experienceof the Cirrus team in warehouse and logistics

planning. The approach follows a specifically designed pathwayusing Cirrus template to ensure that all key parameters are takeninto consideration. This is customised each time to reflect theindividual client and the particular challenge, whether this is atender or an impending change to the warehouse network or theneed to benchmark current warehouse efficiency.

The phase-based approach of Warehouse Solution Design beginswith project scoping workshops. Here, Cirrus specialists work withthe client management team to establish the real requirementsfounded on business objectives, equipping themselves to then mapout the project accordingly. Relevant data is collected, validatedand benchmarked against industry standards before current statemodelling is undertaken using CLASS, Cirrus Logistics warehouselayout and simulation software tool. Further workshops are run toidentify options for change and these are then modelled, theirimpacts on cost and service compared and the selection of optionsfine-tuned. The fifth step involves the detailed modelling of thealternatives, again using CLASS as well as other analytical methodsselected for their ability to explore all possible constraints. On thisbasis, the optimal solution can be identified and the clearestbusiness case made. In the final stage, a high level plan is put inplace to drive the change process, or to assist with a tender, or asthe basis for managing a physical project.

In addition to Warehouse Solution Design, Cirrus offers an extensive range of

further specialist services in total, a turnkey warehouse solution. These

services include product location, MHE specification, site traffic optimisation,

warehouse purchasing advice, software usage advice and full project

management. The programme may be widened beyond the warehouse to

include such elements as consignment fulfilment and transport network

    modelling.

    KEY BENEFITSAsking the Right Questions

Cirrus guides the client to ensure that the project is properlyscoped and that the data used is relevant to achieving the ultimatebusiness objective

    Gaining Confidence in Change Management

The first hand experience of the Cirrus consultants together withthe power of the computer simulation technology mean that clientscan be certain of the decisions they take for the future

    Validating Tenders

Modelling and re-modelling can take place quickly and cost-effectively; as a result, the tender process is informed by betterbriefing, improved communications and verification of the proposals

Achieving the Optimum Cost/ Service Balance

The process of Warehouse Solution Design is specific to each client, reflecting that companys position on the best cost versus servicebalance

    C SE STUDIES

    Warehouse Layout & Simulation

    CLASS

The objective of a recent Warehouse Solution

Design project with a major retailer was to

establish the life remaining in its 25,000 sqmetre centre distributing to all of Scotland

against various potential scenarios for growth.

It was also to identify how efficiencies and

throughput could be improved to extract

maximum value out of the warehouse over a

five-year time horizon. Working closely with the

client, Cirrus undertook a thorough project

scoping exercise in order to put in place the

most effective structure for the work before

going on to collect and input data into the

CLASS warehouse design and simulation tool.On the basis of this, the team built a virtual

model of the warehouse and then tested

options for layouts and their impacts on

    operations. Simulations of various operational

scenarios were run, increasing volumes by

between 20-40% and methods were assessed

for improving work rates and the consequences

of this on staffing levels. In a further simulation,

the team also examined the effect on

warehouse productivity if, unlike in reality, all

    supplier deliveries arrived on time.

The project not only proved that the retailer

could successfully continue to use the

warehouse as its main Scottish distribution

centre for the next five years but it showed the

client how to manage operations there as they

grew, without needing to invest significant

sums. Various options for managing supplier

delivery times were also assessed but,

unexpectedly, it was found that productivity in

the centre only improved marginally if all

deliveries were on time. The powerful insights

given to the client by this project have led to

the companys decision to purchase CLASS and

train its own managers in the on-going use of

    the system.

The key is to understand, define and

agree the overriding needs that must bemet, not just in the short term butwell into the future.

BOUT CL SSCLASS is the leading warehouse design andsimulation tool and is the only hands-on

software product exclusively focusedon enabling design anddecision-making in the warehouse. It allows organisations to design,re-design and test warehousinglayouts through simulation in thecomputer environment without riskto on-going operations. It also enablescompanies to assess product through-flowand the organisation of equipment to quantify cost and improveefficiency and service levels. CLASS is recognised worldwide for itscomplex underlying technology which is successfully balanced with

accessibility in terms of ease-of-use, with speed of delivery and withattractive visual clarity that helps explain the best options available foroptimum warehouse productivity.
