The College and Career Center is dedicated to providing guidance and resources for all students throughout their educational career at NCCHS. We are excited to offer opportunities for students such as visiting college campuses, learning about each of the military branches, and visiting job sites to gain knowledge and experience into being prepared for the workforce. A few of our most recent opportunities provided to students are described next.

The College and Career Center held the first NCCHS Postsecondary Success Conference at the Greenbelt Cultural Center on April 9th. Seniors were invited to attend and participate in workshops geared towards their specific postsecondary track. Seniors were able to choose between three tracks: Enroll into college, Enlist into the military, and Employ into a career. Examples of the workshops include: Branding Yourself, Life in College, College Student Panel, Resume and Cover Letter Workshop, Military Branch Panel, and a Postsecondary Career Panel. Both students and presenters acknowledged the positive impact of the conference. Seniors are another step closer to pursuing their postsecondary goals after high school!

The College and Career Center has scheduled college visits for 9th-11th grade students. On April 18th, the freshmen class attended Lake Forest College. Students went on a walking tour of the campus and met with an admissions representative to learn more about college and what it takes to be admitted into college. On May 2nd the sophomores and juniors will be split into groups and they will visit one of the following six colleges: University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Saint Xavier University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, and Marquette University. College visits are meant to expose students to college culture and lifestyle in order to prepare students to answer fundamental questions as they start applying to colleges their senior year. Students will be able to answer questions on the type of college they want to attend by discussing the size of the college, student population, diversity, location, resources available, and academics available based on student major or career interests.

Warhawks United

On April 18 NCCP collaborated with NCCHS to host Warhawks United! The purpose of the Warhawks United Family Night was to engage the North Chicago Community High School families and unite the community. Over 100 guests attended the inaugural event and enjoyed dinner, music, activities, make-and-take crafts, a performance from the NCCHS Band and Drum Line, and a performance from the Elite Steppers Drill Team. Alumni, students, current teachers and staff enjoyed an evening of food, fun, and fellowship!

Noche Familiar “Warhawks United”

¡El 18 de abril, NCCP colaboró con NCCHS para organizar Warhawks United! El propósito de la Noche Familiar de Warhawks United fue involucrar a las familias de North Chicago Community High School y unir a la comunidad. El Centro de Colegios y Carreras ha programado visitas a la universidad para estudiantes de 9º a 11º grado. El 18 de abril, la clase de estudiantes de primer año asistió a Lake Forest College. Los estudiantes hicieron un recorrido a pie por el campus y se reunieron con un representante de admisiones para aprender más sobre la universidad y lo que se necesita para ser admitido en la universidad. Hawk Squad

Hawk Squad is an after-school, service-learning program held at North Chicago Community High School (NCCHS). The program was initiated to provide students with opportunities to become effective community leaders and develop social awareness, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and community pride. The program meets every Wednesday from 2:45 pm to 4:30 pm. Each meeting begins with students enjoying a light snack to jumpstart the brain after a long day of school. Then, we share a brief presentation about a social issue present in the community followed by a brainstorming session to develop and execute an action plan.

NCCP mentors plan an activity to address the social issue discussed each week an provide support and guidance for the students to finalize and carry out the plan. For example, our teachers have the privilege of teaching and shaping the minds of the next generation. However, teachers work very hard and are sometimes tired. The Hawk Squad created “drops of care” candy bags to give to our teachers to let them know that we appreciate the impact they have on the community and young minds. Students practiced decision-making, planning, and execution of the plan to produce 300 items for this drop of care. As these Warhawks work with their hands, they also work with their hearts. Hawk Squad

Hawk Squad es un programa de aprendizaje que toma lugar después de la escuela en North Chicago Community High School (NCCHS). El programa se inició para brindar oportunidades para que alumnos se conviertan en líderes comunitarios exitosos y que desarrollen habilidades de conciencia social. Gracias al programa, alumnos aprenden como tomar decisiones responsables, como interactuar uno con el otro y aprenden a demostrar orgullo de la comunidad. El programa se reúne todos los miércoles de 2:45 pm a 4:30 pm. Cada reunión comienza con un refrigerio ligero para estimular el cerebro de los alumnos después de un largo día de clases. Luego, se comparte una breve presentación sobre un problema social en la comunidad, seguida de una sesión de ideas para desarrollar y ejecutar un plan de acción.

Los mentores de NCCP planifican una actividad para abordar el problema social que se discute cada semana y brindan apoyo y orientación a los estudiantes para finalizar y llevar a cabo el plan. Junior Achievement

Forty-four students from Neal and NCCHS participated in various events in the course of 3 days thanks to the collaboration between NCCP, Junior Achievement, AbbVie and Discover. The purpose of these events was to guide students in thinking and planning for their careers through JA curriculum-based workshops. Students were paired with working professionals from AbbVie and Discover to participate in a fun day of activities that encouraged them to think about their future!

On April 11, 15 students from NCCHS attended JA You’re Hired! at AbbVie and were joined by 16 AbbVie volunteers. JA You’re Hired! Introducesd students to resume building, interviewing skills, and networking. The students used sample resumes and worksheets to create their own first draft resumes. Students also evaluated cover letters and references to begin thinking of their own letters and references. With their mentors, students practiced interviewing for a job through role-play and examples. Students practiced the art of small talk and elevator pitches during an interactive game in the style of BINGO. Immediate feedback from students and volunteers was positive with both groups reported an interest in the topics presented and the high-quality content and activities.

Junior Achievement

Cuarenta y cuatro estudiantes de Neal Math and Science Academy y NCCHS participaron en varios eventos en el transcurso de tres días gracias a la colaboración entre North Chicago Community Partners, Junior Achievement, AbbVie y Discover. El propósito de estos eventos fue guiar a los estudiantes a pensar y planificar sus carreras a través de talleres basados en el currículo de JA. ¡Los estudiantes se juntaron con profesionales que trabajan en AbbVie y Discover para participar en un día divertido, lleno de actividades que los animó a pensar en su futuro!

El 11 de abril, 15 estudiantes de NCCHS asistieron al taller titulado “JA ¡You’re Hired!” en la compañía AbbVie y fueron acompañados por 16 voluntarios de AbbVie. “JA ¡You’re Hired!” presenta a los estudiantes la oportunidad de aprender como escribir un currículum profesional, como desarrollar habilidades de entrevista y como establecer contactos con otros profesionales. STEM Challenge The Career Pathways program at North Chicago High School is currently participating in the ISTI STEM Challenge. As part of the second semester curriculum for the Career Pathway classes, NCCHS partners with the Illinois Science Technology Institute (ISTI) to bring an industry challenge to our students. Our corporate sponsor for the competition is AbbVie. Teams of NCCHS Career Pathway students are partnered with professionals from AbbVie and communicate through an online platform called the Mentor Matching Engine. AbbVie has been a wonderful partner providing on-site learning experiences, mentors and support for the students involved in the challenge. This year’s challenge is for the teams to create an innovation or a process that would improve health literacy or overall wellness in the North Chicago community. On April 5, twenty-two teams (110 students) presented their solutions at the Poster Session hosted by AbbVie. The projects, which were incredibly creative and innovative, were judge by AbbVie professionals during their lunch hour. Students had to present the posters and answer questions about their ideas. On April 18, the top ten teams will present their ideas in a more formal presentation in front of a panel of judges. This event, known as the Top 10 Showcase, will take place in the NCCHS auditorium. The panel of judges will select the top team that will be able to present their idea one more time at the ISTI STEM Challenge Showcase at Google Chicago on April 26. In addition, the top 3 teams will be rewarded by AbbVie with plaques of recognition and a exciting trip to Chicago that is headlined by a visit to the Willis Tower SkyDeck and lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe. Overall, the ISTI STEM challenge allows the Career Pathway students to go through an authentic, industry-based learning experience. This challenge provides the opportunity for the students to further develop numerous essential skills such as, research, interpersonal communication and presentation. It also broadens their overall STEM-related knowledge and gives them a chance to explore STEM-related careers. The ISTI STEM Challenge is truly a highlight of the 2nd semester Career Pathways curriculum!

NCCHS Helps the Community

North Chicago Community High School partners with Vitalant and Life Source to complete blood drives throughout the school year. The purpose of the blood drive is to expose our students to opportunities for community service. Students and staff have the chance to donate blood in order to maintain an adequate blood supply for the local community to which blood transfusions are needed. While the purpose of the blood drive is to give back to those in need, it also helps reduce health risks which may include heart attacks and heart disease.

Our latest blood drive was held on April 11tth. We had 67 people attempt to donate blood. We had a total of 55 pints of blood donated, which can result in 165 patients lives being saved in area hospitals. Also, in April, we had 22 new blood donors which beat last year’s results from last April by 13.

North Chicago Community High School also receives financial support for completing bloods throughout the year. The money collected goes towards academic scholarships for students in our Career Pathways. A special thanks to the teachers who gave up prep periods or lunch to come and donate. Many of these teachers donated at all three blood drives (below).

NCCHS Ayuda a la Comunidad
