Arnold is a kid who has had to overcome a lot at a young age. He, therefore, probably felt like an outsider a lot of the time because of his physical challenges. Arnold probably was also the kind of kid who had to grow up fast in some ways and thus probably felt more comfortable with adults than kids his own age.
