Tides
• The daily rise and fall of Earth’s waters on the shorelines.
• Caused by the gravitational pull between the Earth, moon, and Sun.
Two Types of Tides
• Spring Tides–Twice a month, the Sun and moon are
lined up.–This combined gravity creates the
STRONGEST pull on the water.
Two Types of Tides
• Neap Tides–Twice a month, the Sun and moon are
at right angles to each other.–This combined gravity creates the
WEAKEST pull on the water.
Moon
• is kept in orbit by Earth’s gravity.• is visible because it reflects sunlight.• does NOT give off its own light.
Moon Phases
• As the Earth revolves around the Sun, the moon revolves around the Earth.
• The phase of the moon you see depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon is facing Earth.
