Poll
What is your biggest challenge in implementing alcohol restrictions at community events or in public places?
14
Case Study 1: Alcohol Restrictions at Open Air Event
• Challenge: Lack of enforcement of existing open air ordinance
• Action: Collaboration with law enforcement to research existing ordinances/compile evidence on risks of alcohol sales; testimony to city council
• Outcome: City council resolution supporting existing ordinances
Case Study 1
15
What can we take away?
• Communicate with law enforcement that, based on research, the community wants ordinances enforced
• Look into existing ordinances• Explore the idea of legislators passing a
resolution
Case Study 1
16
Case Study 2: Binge and Underage Drinking at University Games
• Challenge: No drinking ordinance in place
• Action: Use of assessments to make the case for policy change
• Outcome: Policy implementation by university
Case Study 2
17
What can we take away?
• Frame involvement as offering assistance and resources to position yourself as a community partner
• Revisit policy assessment data• Enlist local media as a partner
Case Study 2
18
Case Study 3: Binge Drinking at Non-Profit Events
• Challenge: Low level of readiness among non-profit event sponsors
• Action: Relationship-building as well as training for non-profits
• Outcome: Increased awareness and subsequent readinessCase Study 3
19
What can we take away?
• Frame yourself as a resource to protect the investments of key stakeholders
• Create and implement a response that is based upon readiness assessment results
Case Study 3
