• Militarism European Nations competed with each other to build the largest military

- Great Britain & Germany wanted largest Navy

- Russia, France, & Germany competed for the largest Army

“arms race” driven by strong feelings of pride (nationalism)

• Alliances For protection (from the large militaries), European countries formed defensive

• Nationalism Extreme pride in one’s culture and nation –

- puts national interest ahead of global cooperation leads to fierce competition and antagonism in Europe BALKAN TURMOIL (throw off imperialist rule)

- Ethnic groups who did not have their own country wanted independence – promote their culture and interests above those of other countries. (Serbia, Bosnia, Croats, Yugoslavia)

- Imperialism was against the beliefs of nationalists!

• ImperialismCountries increased their power and wealth by controlling others.

- Industrialized countries acquire new (non-industrialized ) countries to supply them with raw materials.

- Quarrels broke out over who should control those colonies /interested in the same area

- Smaller countries did not always want to be controlled by others
