The definition of numeracy states that a numerate person should understand the ways mathematics can be used for communication, and this requires the possession of two attributes

1. being ’at-ease’ with all those aspects of mathematics that enable a person to cope with the practical demands of everyday life.

2. the ability to understand information presented in mathematical terms.

Students become numerate as they develop the knowledge and skills to use mathematics confidently at school and in their daily lives. Numeracy involves students recognising and understanding the role of mathematics in the world and having the dispositions and capacities to use mathematical knowledge and skills purposefully.

In a ‘nutshell’ Numeracy means the ability to use mathematical knowledge in a range of situations.

Tuesday 24th November was National Fairy Bread Day. To celebrate this the Foundation children had fun making fairy bread in their grades. Some children had never tasted fairy bread before so it was quite an exciting experience for them. Yum! Following this authentic learning activity students wrote a procedural text.

Summer said “I liked eating the fairy bread. It was tasty!”

Isla said “I liked dipping the bread onto the sprinkles. It looked half good and half not because the sprinkles didn’t stick all over the bread.”

Paxton said “I liked how colourful the bread looked.”

Ryan said “It was fun making fairy bread and putting the sprinkles on it. But when I tasted it, I didn’t like it. We then wrote a procedural text on how to make fairy bread.”

Harrison said: “It was exciting making fairy bread. It tasted crunchy!”

Chase said “I liked making the fairy bread, how we got to spread the butter, put the sprinkles on and cutting it up into triangles. It was delicious!”

This Christmas season our students are encouraged to think about people who are less fortunate than themselves and to help others by contributing to poverty-alleviating gift purchases. The Very Useful Gift Catalogue has been developed by TEAR (Transformation, Empowerment, Advocacy and Relief).

Working with Christian partners in local communities, TEAR supports long-term, holisitic development projects that make a real difference for people facing poverty.

Every item in TEAR’s gift catalogue represents a contribution to a long-term poverty-fighting project run by

one of TEAR Australia’s Christian partners. Each project is tailored to that community’s needs, helping people gain the skills and resources they need to address local problems and come up with sustainable solutions. Catalogues are available in the Hummingbird Room if your family want to check out other gifts.

I am aiming to achieve the following by collecting enough small donations to fund: The training and support of a classroom teacher in Africa - $200 A toilet to help minimise disease and promote health in a community - $70 As many goats ($50 each) and chickens ($5 each) as we can!

Donation tins have been placed in the front office and in the Hummingbird Room for students to place donations into.

Check out the gift stocking displayed in the Hummingbird Room for the progress made towards achieving our aim! Every donation counts!

Year Four

Mt Evelyn CampThe children in Year Four spent three action packed days at the Mount Evelyn Camp from Wednesday 18th November to Friday 20th November. The weather was perfect and the children were able to experience all the activities on offer at the camp. Students were flying down the flying fox, swinging on the giant swing, hiding in the huts they built, encountering wildlife, cooking on the camp fire and some children were even lucky enough to catch a yabby!

School Council Report Hi, my name is Dan Weeks,

and this is my second term on School Council.

We have two children at Warragul North Primary School and it is great to see how settled they are and happy at school. This seems to be the time of year for

birthday parties so we have also had the pleasure of getting to know some of their classmates and parents. The feedback about the school is always positive – the children all enjoy it, and the parents are pleased with the school and the well rounded experiences provided. We have had children in school in three towns in Victoria as we have moved around, including public and private schools and in our experience Warragul North Primary School rates highly.

The population growth in Baw Baw Shire continues as projected, and at Council we were pleased to see that the enrolments for next year are at a number where we should not have to worry about the Education Department wanting to relocate any of our buildings. We will of course keep an active watch and are ready to respond, and we have also sought confirmation that there are no plans involving Warragul North Primary School.

At Council we also keep a close eye on the budget, the costs charged and the expenditure. As I think I wrote last year, I am constantly surprised and impressed at how such little funding is made to go such a long way to provide the students with a safe learning environment.

Mr Dan Weeks School Councillor

News from the Art RoomThe Year Four to Year Six students have been working on Positive and Negative Space Art. What is Positive and Negative Space? Simply put, positive space is best described as the areas in a work of art that are the subjects, or areas of interest. Negative space is area around the subjects, or areas of interest.

Positive and negative space plays an important role in determining the overall composition in a work of art. By understanding positive and negative space and applying this knowledge, you can become more successful in designing your compositions.

Term FourMusical Soiree

Wow! What an amazing night of entertainment was enjoyed at our final soirée for 2015 last Thursday, 26th November. All of the 42 students who performed had great stage presence and the audience were very encouraging and supportive.

Students sang and performed using a variety of instruments. Acts included solo performers, duets, trios and acoustic and electronic ensembles. A DVD of the evening has been produced and order forms can be collected from the office. The cost of the soiree DVD is just $5.00

It was the final performance for our talented Year Six students and a celebration of their performing arts lessons at Warragul North Primary School. As they commence secondary school we wish them great success and hope they can further their skills.

Soirées are a regular event at Warragul North Primary School where we encourage all the children who take part in private music lessons to present an item during the year. For some children it is their first real performance.

Thank you for your continued support of the Performing Arts program at Warragul North Primary School.

Mrs Jill Binks Performing Arts Teacher

YEAR SIX GRADUATION WEDNESDAY 16TH DECEMBER

Year Six Graduation preparations are in full swing. The day will commence at 9.00am with a graduation ceremony in the gymnasium, followed by morning tea in the staffroom for parents and graduating students. Year Six children are to go home following the morning tea.

A diligent band of parents have worked tirelessly to arrange a dinner and dance for the graduating children which will be held in the evening, commencing at 6.30pm and concluding at 9.00pm. Year Six students are reminded that the graduation dinner is a fairly formal occasion and the children are encouraged to dress accordingly (shirt and pants for boys) without going over the top.

A big thank you to everyone who has assisted in the planning and preparation for this very special occasion to ensure that the evening will be a great success and form fond memories for our graduating students as their final social event in their primary school years!

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CAREAs usual the OSHC House is a hive of activity with the children always managing to find something interesting to do such as colouring, dressing up, blowing bubbles and of course celebrating birthdays.

Treasure hunts have continued as a popular outside activity at OSHC. All the children have enjoyed themselves as they worked in teams doing activities and finding items listed in their instructions then finishing with a dig in the sandpit to find the treasure. Older children have shown good leadership skills as they encouraged and assisted the younger children in the teams.

Requests for care at OSHC in 2016 are being processed and places will be allocated in the order the requests have been received.

OSHC is available on a permanent or casual basis. Enrolment forms are available from the school office or from OSHC. A waiting list is held if a session is already fully booked. It is important that the school office or OSHC is notified if your child is not going to attend a session they have been booked in for as that place can then be used for a casual booking. Once you have a permanent booking you will be billed for that placement whether your child attends or not. Phone numbers for bookings and cancellations are:

Pacific School GamesIn our 29th July, 2015 newsletter we very excitedly reported that Cooper Alger (6CU) had been selected to represent Victoria in the boy’s under 12 basketball team. On Friday 11th September our school held Crazy Hat Day to raise funds to assist Cooper attend the Pacific School Games.

Cooper and his family travelled to Adelaide for the Pacific School Games which were held from November 21st to the 29th. Cooper had a great time representing Victoria and very proudly returned with a gold medal. Cooper has written about his experience.

“My family (Mum, Dad, Jasper and Preston) and I arrived in Adelaide on Friday 20th November and I was keen and ready to play basketball. The team trained on Saturday at Wayville stadium which is home to SA basketball, and then the team had lunch together.

Our first game was on Sunday against the South Australian team who had a huge home crowd. We won comfortably by 25 points. I then went to the Opening Ceremony which was held at the Adelaide Showgrounds. There were over 10,000 spectators there and over 2000 athletes. It was an amazing experience.

During the next five days TeamVic played against India, QLD, NT, ACT, WA and NSW. We won all our games by an average 46 points. I was the starting point guard so my job was to dribble the ball down the court and set the plays. All players were strong and tall and I was the smallest in the team. Everyone contributed as a team and played well together.

We ended up playing off against NSW for the Gold Medal and won the game 66-49. NSW won Silver and NT won the Bronze medal. The Victorian Captain and I (as Vice-Captain) were presented with the Pacific Games School Sport Shield during the Closing Ceremony which was held on Friday 27th November.

It was exciting being presented my Gold medal and the team shield in front of a huge crowd. The shield will visit our school for three months during 2016. I have made some lifelong friends from Victoria, other Australian states and countries.

It has been an honour and an amazing experience to represent Victoria and Warragul North Primary School and I will always remember the week as the BEST week of my life. Thank you to everyone at Warragul North for helping me raise money and supporting me during this event!”
